Circular app icons question - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I received notification for update to 7.1.2 ota.
I have seen some videos shown that 7.1.2 has circular app icons.
I am thinking to move or not to the update because I don't like at all the circular icons.
(I still have phone and messages apps not updated because of the circular buttons)
I prefer my device just like it is now.
Do you know if there is any setting to have the update but the UI to remain as it is?
Any other solution except to use another launcher?

Only the Pixel phones have circular icons, no need to worry.

Thanks for the reply.
I haven't updated my phone/messages/contacts apps from playstore and I wonder if applying the update will change these apps to the newest versions where the icons are circular.
Phone and messages icons that I don't want to change can be seen in the attached photo.

What do you mean?
I mean caller app(phone), messages app, contacts app.
If you see the screenshot I have attached previously I am using the old ones.
In playstore there are updates (for me) which change icons about these specific apps.
Youtube is full of videos which show the new icons on 5X (no launcher).
Check in attached screenshots how the updated icons are but I haven't still updated.
(Also in update description it says <<new icons>>)

Yeah those are circles on all versions of Android, I don't know why you're so resistant to change of any kind, but you do you. The new dialer and message apps are much better than they were when they had the old icons.
But no, the update doesn't have updated versions of the apps.

it is possible to switch icon layout as you want
but a rooted device need with custom recovery
i can switch those icons root needed to do so
due to signature change and unsign apk
also launcher icons persist to change icon layout due to own icons
but they will also can change with custom ones without
changing the launcher custom recovery need
also check icon pack if you need so it is possible or not

Except the fact that I prefer the old icons (aesthetically), the previous time I updated these apps it made my contacts, calendar, pictures of contacts etc a mess...

Nova launcher does not require root and I'm sure there are a lot more if that is what you are needing. While I am rooted I do not believe I have to be for this setup. I downloaded an additional app called min icons for the icons.

I would follow this :
1. Change your home screen.
nova_jelly_bean
There are a lot of cool options for launchers, but Nova Launcher is probably your best bet for this purpose (Play Store Download Link). Simply using the default settings of Nova immediately makes your phone look a great deal like stock.
2. Customize your “look.”
holo_iconsYou’re also going to want to change your icons. Holo Icons is filled with stock icons, and looks great with Nova (Play Store Download Link).
You can even download stock wallpapers for an even more Play Edition experience. The Play Edition devices come with a new SunBeam live wallpaper, which you can download for your device for free (Play Store Download Link). If you’d rather have the other, non-live wallpapers that come with Jelly Bean, you can also get those in the Play Store (Play Store Download Link).
And if you want that minimalistic clock you see above, you can get that too, with Clock JB (Play Store Download Link).
3. Change your lock screen.Jelly_Bean_Search_Widgets_and_Halo_Launchr
The lock screen is the part of your device that you see the most often. Just like launchers, there are many options for alternate lock screens as well. For the purpose of making your device look like a stock device, Holo Locker is your best option (Play Store Download Link). It has many customization options, it’s stable, and it looks cool.
4. Install Google apps.
google_apps
Stock Android devices come with only Google created apps. That includes the stock keyboard, which Google released on the Play Store a few months ago. Also make sure you have Gmail, Maps, Chrome, Calendar, and any other Google apps you desire. You can find them all in the Play Store through this link.
dialer_cameraYou’ll probably notice that there are some stock apps that are on stock devices, but that Google hasn’t released to the Play Store. You’re not going to be able to find all of them, but some, like the Camera app, complete with the awesome Photo Sphere feature (Download Link) and the Dialer (Download Link) have been leaked for you to enjoy.
5. Make all of these apps default, and disable bloatware.
While setting up these apps, some will prompt you to make it the default app, but others will not. Make sure you make all of them default, so they will open automatically whenever you want to use them. You can do that using a very useful app called Default App Manager (Download Link).
Disabling_Apps_429
If your device isn’t stock, it comes with a lot of your carrier and manufacturer’s bloatware. Without rooting, it’s hard to get rid of it all, but if you go into Settings / Apps, you can individually tap on the bloat apps and manually disable them. For more information, check out our guide on disabling bloatware. Also, if you’re using Nova Launcher, you can upgrade to the premium version and make them disappear from your app drawer and have them out of sight.

I´m using Apex Launcher with the Jelly Bean 4.3 HD Theme. It replaces the most Huawei icons with the default android ones. Tried Nova first, but placing widgets at the home screen doesn´t work with it.

I have managed to reach their dowload site of that second theme:
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid=3818376665&uk=3406717033
Use google chrome browser and translate and click normal download.
This is theme section of forum. Many themes there:
http://cn.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=forumdisplay&fid=44
How to download:
1) go to a china theme thread and the end of the first post you probably see a locked link. It gets unlocked only when you reply to that thread.
2) On clicking the locked link, you probably end up in signup/login. I already had account on english forum, i just used that and password in the two sections. But im not sure if that actually created new account or logged in same account. The login id is done using email id. So email id and password.
3) after typing email id and password, it led me to a page with a single section to type. I was stuck here. But got around it. It basically asked to type a nickname. So type forum nick name.
4) now that you successfully logged in, reply to the topic to get theme unlocked
I have installed it. Freakin awesome. Customizes the whole thing. Cant sleep today.
I tried these three themes:
http://cn.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=193267&extra=page=1

Works fine. No issues noticed yet. In two of those themes, you wont get the clock as shown in screenshot. Its maybe a separate widget.
Also one of the theme, the screen lock is different from screenshot. There is no lock icon anywhere as supposed to be according to screenshot. But just swiping over screen unlocks it in a different way which looks cool by itself.
Note that the themes section does not come under a "p6" section. So themes could be for other EMUI versions and other models. I dont know if problems might happen if other used.
Tried this holo theme:http://cn.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=78602&mobile=yes
Very beautiful too. But again, although on the details it mentions that widget has been customized, yet i dont see where that is. I dont get the clock widget as shown in screen shot.
thanks so much

Remember a majority if not all the themes located on vmall's website automatically append the .txt extension. Just rename the extension to .hwt and copy to your themes dir located on internal or external sd card. The themes app should automatically scan those directories and import on opening.

New Miui style Huawei P6 Theme
Enviado desde mi HUAWEI P6-U06
I tried this flyme 3.0 theme:
http://cn.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=196888&extra=page=4&page=1
Its a neat and sweet theme but a little incomplete. The folders open as opaque window which is unique, but the font within that is in a black color that is not visible. It should be made white, and also the homescreen should be dimmed out a little more when opening folders, so that the opaque folder does not cause stuff on homescreen to show up in folder. The dialpad could have been made with a flatter keypad and a color that matches theme overall, but that isn't really a problem. Also a couple of icons have not been updated and may look out of place.
If someone knows how to edit this theme and fix those issues, it would be great.

Extract Icons from Icon Packs?

what is the easiest way to extract individual icons from icon packs so you don't have to universally apply all icons within a pack?

I use nova launcher which makes this easy. Just press and hold on the icon you want changed. When the menu pops up, select settings (the cog wheel). This will bring you to a menu that you can change the icon image, name and also assign a second action when swiping the icon opposed to just tapping on it.
I hope that helps.

Yup that helps except I'd like to use the stock launcher. There you can add icons from gallery only not an icon pack so that's why I wanted to know if we can extract the pack.

The easiest thing you can do is use extract the apk using 7zip, or you can use root explorer as well if you long press on the icon pack apk and extract it as well. You can also decompile the apk and pull the images from the xxhdpi, xhdpi folders, what icon packs where you looking at, I can extract some for you and just post the zips

He is not trying to do that, he is trying to extract the icons he wants to use and put them in the gallery because he can change the actual system icon and not lose notification functionality. Its a slight different concept because you can longpress on the icons and literally change it like iconchanger, but its built in and you use images from the gallery

Yea except that it doesn't because it doesn't just theme the system icon, it creates a completely new on separate from the system and you lose the notification number, you don't need icon changer..... He just wants the icons so installing icon changer doesn't fix anything, because he still needs the icons so if you read what he is asking, he wants to extract icons

I am also looking for basically stock Android icons extracted...basically the ,png for the phone, camera, people etc. Anyone know where to get them? I've been on the google machine and I've gone on the line and still can't find a serviceable .png of these simple icons. I don't want to switch from the stock launcher, and simply want to replace the current icon with a different (stock android) one.
Thanks in advance.....

He only wants to extract single icon from the theme, so I think ThemeX is the right answer
So does anyone know where the system "Icon gallery" icons are kept on this G3? Which folder and what format are they?
I'd like to be able to directly place icons in there, so they come up when I try choose a system icon.
Seems there are limited LG G3 themes available at the moment from LG.

[HUAWEI] [EMUI] Remove icon borders, backgrounds etc. - ENABLE PURE ICONS

As you may noticed, Huawei's EMUI is adding rounding borders to icons. This can be very annoying so there is a simple trick to have icons without borders.
But first - I am not responsible for any damage made by doing this.
What will this do?
Remove rounded borders and icon background from applications icons
Replace system app icons to material design icons
[Coming soon][Now available]Replace out-of-date looking app icons (google apps etc.) - Most of them were replaced, if you see any out-of-date icons, please write it in comments
NEW: Some users, especially Ankit Aryal, TKGerrald and shahi.persian (I am sorry if I forgot about anyone), suggested me to make theme that only changes 3rd party apps. So, I am presenting Third Party Apps edition known as 3PAE. Installation is the same as "NEW installation (3.0+)". Download HERE
Knows issues
Some apps like Google apps, Viber etc. will still have borders, but not rounded - Most of them were fixed, if you see any bordered icons, please write it in comments
Lockscreen wallpaper can't be changed, it is always the same as the homescreen wallpaper
Tested on Huawei MediaPad M2 8.0
NEW installation (3.0+) (if something goes wrong, use the original installation below):
Download Pure.HWT file from download section (unpack if you downloaded .7z file, if you have .hwt file, do not unpack)
Put the file into your device to HWThemes folder
Open Themes app on your device
Choose a stock theme that will be used as a base (for example, I like the theme called Brightness) and apply it
Open Themes app again
Tap Customise
Tap lock style, tap more and choose PureIconsV3.0 and Apply
Tap Unlock animation and apply any theme you like
Tap Lock screen and apply your lockscreen wallpaper
Tap Home screen and apply your homescreen wallpaper
The most important step: Tap Icons then more and choose PureIconsV3.0 and apply
Done
Original installation (1.0+):
Download Pure.HWT file from download section (unpack if you downloaded .7z file, if you have .hwt file, do not unpack)
Put the file into your device to HWThemes folder
Open Themes app on your device
Find theme called Pure and tap it
Tap a checkbox
Done

WOW awesome !!!!!
Thank you for this awesome "theme", this really rescues the ugly look of the Huawei icons in connection with Nova Launcher.
Would you mind telling me why some of the icons (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox, Google Calendar, Play Store) still have a (square, sharp) white background while others (e.g. Spotify, Whatsapp, Google Clock and others) don't have one? How do I disable the ugly white background in an EMUI theme?
Thanks for sharing.

Greetings!
So... The reason of that is because some "clever" people in Huawei decided it will be better if they replace the icons of the most popular apps. So even if you generaly disable backgrounds theese apps will still have borders and will be looking out of date. And the reason of that some apps doesn't have borders is because I replaced the icon manually but for some reason I can't replace the play store icon. So if you give me a list of ugly looking apps, I can replace them in the next update.

Really clever of them, thanks for clarification.
Icons that still have a white border and might be of general interest: Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Street View (comes with Google Maps). Interestingly, though, some apps that are 100% not included in your list and have an irregular shape with transparency (e.g. Automate, DiscoMark Benchmark) don't have such a border. This behaviour seems quite strange.
I anyways use Nova Launcher, so no need to include my listed apps, I just thought I might mention them for your information.
Cheers mate
PS: Do you need to replace all the single icons in order to not show a border? Or can you replace some kind of theme-wide "border file" with an empty file to not show a border?

Hello!
I will include the icon.s ASAP. The reason because the apps like automate don't have a border is because Huawei didn't change the icon, just added borders so in this case it is easier to remove the borders generally. For regular apps I simply remove the file that add borders. But in apps like Google apps and other popular apps I have to do it manually, icon by icon
Some other apps with ugly white boxes, in 2.2 version: Waze, Messenger (Facebook), Play Store.
Anyway, great job, thanks!
First of all, thanks so much for the theme. Those ugly borders I have been loathing since the moment I got my P8 Lite (ALE-L04, now on 5.1). Got linked from an Android Central article today.
For icons still with white border, apart from the others already mentioned, I have: Google Photos, Play Games, Voice Search.
There seems to be a bug with the theme on my phone. The lockscreen wallpaper cannot be set independently from the homescreen wallpaper. From what I can tell, the theme has "styles" for Homescreen and the Lockscreen. Seems like the lockscreen portion may not be well defined enough and the system treats them as the same. The wallpaper settings allow me to change the lockscreen wallpaper with "Other", but once selected, it does not do anything.
Let me know if you need screenshots.
Keep up the good work!

Since the icons are one of the components of a theme, and the EMUI allows customizing each of the components (screen lock style, unlock animation, lockscreen, homescreen, icons, and font), we can use the stock themes and just switch the Icons to your theme. However, I could not do that because Themes -> Customize does not see your theme as a selectable Icons theme. I hacked the zip file around and looked at another theme that I downloaded (the Android N theme). Turns out I just need a preview_icons_1.png file under the preview folder for the theme to be selectable for just the icon. I created a 1x1 png just for that. Tried to put a nicer png but it does not render the picture. This worked without needing to reskin the lockscreen and fiddle with layout XML files and such.
One thing I do miss though, is that the incomplete theming seems to unhide additional functionality of the lockscreen. The default on mine is a swipe to unlock with a camera icon on the lower right (swiping that will go directly to Camera app). With yours set as the whole theme, I got a 4-way unlock slider thing (like stock Android?) and it was cool. I do want the individual wallpapers more than that "feature".

Version with "normal" System App Icons?
Hi!
First of all: awesome work! Was looking for that for ages. But is there a possibility that you can Upload a Version with less fancy music, telephone and Messaging Icon? And is it possible to switch the background colors of the Widgets to the style which is "Singularity" Theme is using? (Official Emui 4.0 p8 Theme)
If you could do such thing, that would be so awesome!!
Like I would even pay for that theme.

Hi, icons you mentioned except Google Photos should have been changed in 3.0 version. Also the wallpaper issue was solved (thanks to flyfox99). Thanks!

Thank you so much for this! When you use original installation for V3.0 you will still have the lockscreen functions but if you use new installation, you can change the background independently.

Hi! Thanks for you feedback! Messaging and Telephone icons should be changed by now. Music (I think you mean ringtone) can be changed in future, if you sent me a music that you want to have there, that would be great. I don't know much about changing widget background but if you sent me the Singularity theme, I could try it.
Awesome work!
Thanks for this great work! I was shocked when I saw the ugly iOS 'adapted' Icons on my new Mediapad and spend some hours to find out how to change this.
I want to let you know that also the Hangouts Icon still have the ugly backround.
Sincerely
Tina

The original Singularity theme seems to be a stock one on the P8. Someone repacked it. Music may mean the music player app? On mine the icon just looks like Google Play Music. The widget thing may need deeper skinning of the respective app to set background colours, etc.?

On my P8 Lite the Hangouts icon was already fixed even in v2.2. Attached is a screenshot for v3.0.
@MrAdny: also confirming that Play Games has been fixed. :good:

Unfortunately even after changing the screen lock style to V3.0 the 4-way unlock thing still did not re-surface. I think it was a fluke/bug that made it show up in the first place. To properly enable that may need to fully re-implement the lockscreen layout. Oh well, no big loss for me; or I learned to live with same wallpapers.
Google fit has a square white background
And Huawei magnifier is black you can't see the icon on black background.
Other than that it's a great thee thank you!

Android Oreo 8.0 - Icons background

If you upgraded to Android Oreo 8.0 I am sure you noticed the new icon shape and the annoying background.
I read that on other phones (Samsung and Pixel) there is an option to turn the background off but I couldn't find it anywhere in the settings...
Anyone knows how to do it?
Also i look a way to turn to old icons
you can change icons in themes....its easy !! htc theme have more than many milion icons themes or background....
but not change all sistem icon...
The icons look decent to me ( facebook needs some work ), the Settings menu structure and visuals and the changes in the battery menu ( previously Power ) annoy me a little bit.
"I read that on other phones (Samsung and Pixel) there is an option to turn the background off" >>>>>>This is the adaptive icon feature of Android 8.0, not something "turn off the background" but each app must have all kinds of app icons (round, rounded square, square, etc.) in the APK, so that the launcher could pull the needed icon out and show. That's how adaptive icon feature works.
However, the case you described here, is just a set of icon pack made by HTC as default. What you need is just another set of icon pack which you can download for free in HTC Theme app.
HTC needs to stop making their home launcher so rigid. let us change things we would like to on a Nexus or Pixel
install lawnchair it has the option to choose whatever background it's free and it is the best launcher I used hands down
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.deletescape.lawnchair.plah
So, here's the solution: install the icon pack here released by HTC today: https://themes.htc.com/actions/them...5d60d?by=09abf6dd-1d5a-4cc9-b11c-d474867eec70
@Alpert3 Thanks, that helped partially...
For some reason, only some of the Google icons are still with the round grey shadow.
For example: Drive, Chrome, Photos, Gmail, Calendar, Play Store, Fit...
Can you add a screenshot?
I assume it's the the default round icon of Google apps.

Yep, confirmed, it's the adaptive icon from Google.

What link not showing up in XDA labs
@6th_Hokage ??
I made a customized theme, using all rounded icons, I tried to keep all icons as close to stock style as possible. You can download here: https://themes.htc.com/actions/them...a3?token=dbf74135-da27-4d8a-99d7-0e9b1a5eb425
For some reasons it was refused by HTC to publish, not sure why.
If you like my theme with all other stuffs, then keep it; if not, you can choose another theme you like then add choose the icons from my theme.
I can't download any theme from HTC Themes... it shows me an error after 5-10 min it said Impossible to download XX theme. I've cleared data of Sense, reinstall Personalize apk, i've also delete my HTC account sync and reenter my account... I don't know what do to... can someone help me??? Thx
Wrong topic...go post in general Q&A
Ok sorry

Adaptive icons don't work

I have this problem with some icons, they have the wrong shape, and I can't find any settings to change it.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Some apps like Amazon for example don't have an adaptive icon. Some launchers will try and make an adaptable icon out of a standard icon if the adaptable version isn't available.
you can change it with the app adapticons

You can yes however this will only work in the launchers, (not system wide) unless you get an icon pack from the Samsung store. Soo, in recent apps, for example, the icon from adapticons won't work... Unless your rooted and use lawnchair launcher with quickswitch, in which case the icon will also be applied in recent apps.
