It seems people are still under the misconception that cf_autoroot doesn't use a custom recovery, when in fact it does.

My USB connector is broken, so I need to send the phone in for service. There have been several threads on this issue, and I know that it's possible to relock the bootloader without having fastboot access as long as you have root. Problem is, I lost root on the device and am currently on the most recent 4.1.1 stock OTA. I have access to the stock recovery. Since the bootloader is unlocked, I should be able to flash unsigned code -- how can I restore root without having access to USB, so that I can then relock the bootloader? The stock recovery doesn't recognize any of the zips or imgs that I throw on the root of the sdcard. Thanks.

AKAIK stock recovery will only flash a signed update.zip on the cache partition.

Unfortunately if you don't have root AND you don't have a custom recovery AND you don't have a working USB port, you cannot get root nor can you get a custom recovery... Out of luck.
same here
I am exactly in the same situation with my nexus S.
no root, no USB but unlocked bootloader so I can't send it back to samsung.
anyone can help please?

So I actually sent my phone into Samsung with the unlocked bootloader, and it looks like they repaired it. So they weren't dicks about something that's clearly a hardware issue. Once I get the phone back, I'll root it and relock the bootloader just in case anything like this happens again and I get less lucky.
Hello!
I was wondering if there is a way to root the Nexus 7 without using the USB port? I have a Nexus 7 2013 running Lollipop.
I did some research and tried Towelroot without success.
Thanks!

If you have a custom recovery installed, you can download the zip file from XDA link, then flash it in recovery.
Hi! Thank you for replying. I believe I need TWRP or CWM installed to flash a custom recover, right? I only have the original Nexus 7 bootloader which is unlocked.
Is there a way to install TWRP or CWM without using the USB port? How about flashing a custom ROM using the original Nexus 7 bootloader?
Thank you!!

I'm not sure what you're trying to do because TWRP or CWM IS the custom recovery. My feeling, right or wrong, is that you're treading highly unfamiliar territory here. Depending on which custom rom, your current bootloader may or may not work with it. If this sounds like Greek to you, you should read a bit more before doing anything.
Hi! I apologize. I meant to say I believe I need to flash twrp or cwm in order to install a custom ROM and not a custom recovery. I know twrp and cwm are custom recoveries. I am not that unfamiliar with this subject.
All I want to be able to do with my nexus 7 is to root it without having to use the USB port. That's because mine only charges through the USB. I cannot send any data through the USB port.
Is it possible to install a custom ROM without the use of the USB port? I could flash a rooted custom ROM and then install twrp or cwm. I cannot use Flashify, for instance, to install Twrp since my device is not rooted.
Thank you

I don't think you can root that way on lollipop yet. You need to flash SU from recovery, and unfortunately you need a working USB connection to flash a custom recovery. You also need a custom recovery to flash a custom ROM so that's out. Is your tablet still on warranty? You should send it in and get it fixed.
Hi _MetalHead_, thanks for replying. I guess I'll wait to see if a new version of Towelroot comes out with support to Lollipop. Perhaps, that's my only chance to root my Nexus 7 without using the USB port. I bought my tablet on ebay and it is refurbished. Unfortunately, it's not on warranty anymore.

How long ago did you buy it? Any possibility for recourse from the eBay seller?
Make sure you have all drivers installed and maybe try another cable and/or another computer.

Thank! It worked. There any way to set you Custom Recovery to install a rom without usb?
My device is 2013 version. The USB port doesn't work anymore so I use Anker's Qi charger for power. Other than that it's running 6.0.1 with the latest security patches installed. It has an unlocked bootloader but no root.
How can I root this device without having to repair the USB port?
As off now I have tried - KingRoot, FramaRoot, Towelroot and other such apps.
Same same
Hi,
I got the same problem... Did you find a solution to do that?
tahnks

i think ur SOL if bootloader isnt unlocked
my train of thought will go like this.... (assuming bootloader is unlocked)
install a FTP app on the tablet, and copy the SU zip file to internal SD
Use an app to flash TWRP recovery (official TWRP app may work)
boot into recovery and install SU file.
hey guys. Used FlashFire to update my Nexus 5X on 7.0 from the August security patch to the September patch while I was rooted with TWRP and SuperSU. These(http://imgur.com/6vdirwR) are the settings I used, but I still lost root. Lost root and TWRP, and I'm wondering whether there is a safe way to flash TWRP + SuperSU on the phone itself, without using a PC?
My bootloader is still unlocked, fortunately.

I still don't think any other method exists then fishing through fastboot. Some system exploits may be available but why not fastboot?

I don't have a USB-C to USB-A cable and I don't need one for anything other than using fastboot. So I'd be spending like 15 Euro for root because I wouldn't really have any other use for it.

I use this (link) , I hardly got it for $5. Just pick it up, there are times you can't avoid connecting your device to pc.
Give kingo root a go (I dont like it as it installs their root management app but still).

I don't live in America, so no amazon. The cheapest USB A to C cable I could find on an online webshop was 14.95. I've also tried kingo root, but after I use it I get an error code(0x1C4D58). A friend recommended me to install Kingo root, use it and TWRP manager to install TWRP, remove kingo root and then flash supersu.

I have an unlocked bootloader but I accidentally flashed the stock recovery when going back to stock Oreo for the September updates (the fixes made it look a lot better). Is there an app I can use to install TWRP or install root?
