hey guys. Used FlashFire to update my Nexus 5X on 7.0 from the August security patch to the September patch while I was rooted with TWRP and SuperSU. These(http://imgur.com/6vdirwR) are the settings I used, but I still lost root. Lost root and TWRP, and I'm wondering whether there is a safe way to flash TWRP + SuperSU on the phone itself, without using a PC?
My bootloader is still unlocked, fortunately.

I still don't think any other method exists then fishing through fastboot. Some system exploits may be available but why not fastboot?

I don't have a USB-C to USB-A cable and I don't need one for anything other than using fastboot. So I'd be spending like 15 Euro for root because I wouldn't really have any other use for it.

I use this (link) , I hardly got it for $5. Just pick it up, there are times you can't avoid connecting your device to pc.
Give kingo root a go (I dont like it as it installs their root management app but still).

I don't live in America, so no amazon. The cheapest USB A to C cable I could find on an online webshop was 14.95. I've also tried kingo root, but after I use it I get an error code(0x1C4D58). A friend recommended me to install Kingo root, use it and TWRP manager to install TWRP, remove kingo root and then flash supersu.

I have an unlocked bootloader but I accidentally flashed the stock recovery when going back to stock Oreo for the September updates (the fixes made it look a lot better). Is there an app I can use to install TWRP or install root?

I have a fully stock Verizon m8, running 4.4.3, I want to root it. After reading through some posts for the last few hours it seems like I should do it this way.
Use sunshine to s-off
Flash twrp
install supersu.zip
Am I missing something or would this be the correct procedure?
You can also :
Unlock the bootloader at htcdev
Flash twrp or Philz touch
Install superuser zip
It's not mandatory to gain s-off which cost you in this case 25$
I like supporting the devs
One more quick question, is using a computer the only way I'd be able to flash the recovery since I'm going the sunshine route?

Sunshine will allow you temproot when you run it, install flashify and flash recovery.
Once recovery is installed, flash SuperSU.zip
To have full access root, you need a write protection disabled module or kernel.
My device is 2013 version. The USB port doesn't work anymore so I use Anker's Qi charger for power. Other than that it's running 6.0.1 with the latest security patches installed. It has an unlocked bootloader but no root.
How can I root this device without having to repair the USB port?
As off now I have tried - KingRoot, FramaRoot, Towelroot and other such apps.
Same same
Hi,
I got the same problem... Did you find a solution to do that?

i think ur SOL if bootloader isnt unlocked
my train of thought will go like this.... (assuming bootloader is unlocked)
install a FTP app on the tablet, and copy the SU zip file to internal SD
Use an app to flash TWRP recovery (official TWRP app may work)
boot into recovery and install SU file.
Just got a 10 Factory Unlocked. I do need to root for Xprivacy and AdAway, etc. and of course, to make a nandroid. I suppose I could use ADB for such a thing, but TWRP surely does make life easier.
Since this is the first phone I've ever had that was already unlocked, I'm not quite sure where to start with rooting. I'm a little concerned because I'm seeing posts discussing how the radio might go wonky. Not ready to flash a custom ROM yet, I just want to dip my toe in the water for now.
I'd be grateful if someone could point the way.
BTW, the faceplate on my 10 is white, I was expecting black based on all the photos I've seen. Is this because I got the Factory Unlocked edition?
Thanks in advance!
is it on nougat or still marshmallow? i think nougat right? Xposed won't work on nougat anyway and you don't need to worry about the radio. if it's unlocked already and want to just root and you need to pass safetynet, get magisk v12. first you need to flash twrp and then flash the magisk zip to get root and be able to pass safetynet, be sure to not flash anything which modifies directly the system, otherwise no stock OTA and some apps won't work even if you use magisk hide

Haven't even turned the phone on yet - letting her charge to 100% before I do anything. I'm confused - why would I need to unlock the bootloader if I already have an unlocked phone? Or by 'Factory Unlocked' do they mean SIM unlocked, versus bootloader unlocked?

Not familiar with 'safetynet', and yes - I do need Xposed therefore it will modify the /system partition so far as I understand.
In any event, it sounds like the starting point is TWRP for anything to do with root, correct?

yes you need twrp, without it no root... the thing is there is no Xposed for nougat and I think your phone came with android 7/ nougat right? if yes, forget Xposed. but you can use apps like adaway with magisk too.
So that'S why you should search for the Magisk thread and read everything about it, before you proceed

No, the HTC 10 shipped with MM. I guess I'll have to fire her up and see where I'm at.
So, assuming that I'm on MM, then it's just TWRP, flash SuperSU from recovery, install Xposed and I'm off and running - nothing extra, correct?
How would I make a Nandroid of the current factory ROM (all partitions - not file based) using ADB just in case?

yea if MM then it's that easy.
full stock nandroid can be done in twrp, there you can backup system, data, boot and recovery
also the system image, but don't know if you need that, but you can try to backup it too, be sure to have enough space

flash magisk v12 then you have root and also can use android pay and other apps which needs passed safetynet
if you don't mind safetynet, you can also use systemless supersu
To the OP, surely factory unlocked indicates unlocked to all networks rather than bootloader unlocked ? Check this first to save some hassle. If the bootloader isn't unlocked yet, you could consider sunshine s off , it will cost you but on mm firmware you can s off and stay locked which can be an advantage. Worth checking bootloader status first though

What exactly do you need xposed for? It won't work once you updated to Nougat. And Nougat is much better tan Marshmallow at least as far as I'm concerned. All I need I've been able to find on custom ROMs and or by additional root Apps.

Can't go Nougat until Xposed is up and running.
So far:
Unlocked bootloader and went S-off via Sunshine
Installed TWRP
Made the error of allowing modification before taking a backup - not sure if I'm hosed.
Flashed SuperSU SR3 following Chainfire's instructions to send command via ADB
Flashed Xposed
Next: TiBu and restoring apps.

You won't ( probably ) be able to do further ota in the future with your modified backup as you're probably aware. But don't worry too much, it's likely the firmware you're after will be available elsewhere

No big deal. I'm not ready for Nougat until Xposed is running. However, HTC has an RUU available already, so we're good to go.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-10/news/
And of course, if I get bored, there are any number of custom ROMs available. I was running Maximus on my M9, I'd probably go that route again.
I have the Fire TV 1 and had TWRP and Pre Rooted 5.2.4.1 FW installed. Yesterday during a restart the FTV started boot looping. I could see the option for TWRP recovery though.
I booted into TWRP recovery and reflashed the Pre Rooted 5..2.4.1. The FTV now booted but I have lost both TWRP and SuperSu as well. When I type su into an adb shell I got su not found?
Updated were blocked through the device as well.
Anyone else experience this? What can I do now to get TWRP installed and root established?
Help anyone?
Bump ^
Did you do any factory reset or something? I don't know how you could have lost SU and twrp when installing the prerooted roms. All apps say no root? i wonder if you did a factory reset if it would help or re-installed whatever version you were on when you rooted? I'm a novice so don't blame me for bricking! lol

Thats why I am stumped! I did not do any factory resets or wipes. I simply selected rbox's rooted 5.2.4.1 ROM, installed and rebooted. Now I dont see the initial boot screen when the fire tv restarts. Just the regular animation.

Since I had installed rBox's 5.2.4.1 rooted ROM when I had root, thats what I am on now except without root now. I had blocked updates on the device so thankfully that is still in place. And according to aftvnews, this version cannot be rooted.
I do have a bunch of non stock apps that I had installed that are still present on the device.

you ever try to sideload SuperSU? Or run a root app that requests access and seen if it just says access denied? Just throwing out ideas to try, I didn't see anyone else trying to help. If you flashed pre-rooted version then i would think some of the exploits are still in your system.

I downloaded the latest supersu and sideloaded it. When I run it there is simply a blank screen and back to where I was. Nothing happens.
Now in appstarter I can see two versions of su, one from before and the latest one. Running either does not do anything.
I had Adaway installed before as well. If I run it now, it just comes back with not a rooted device

No thats the kicker, I lost both TWRP and root.
It is a long shot, but you could try kingo root and king root, see if they can get root access. I know they dont work on a firetv stock for rooting, but something must have flashed wrong and maybe they can find a way into root.
Curious though, every time you have flashed the pre-rooted OS did you always disable the updates every time?

AFTVnews always recommends disabling updates to be sure. It almost seems like you got updated. Try running Kingroot. Worst case it fails and you are still where you are at...
I've seen posts instructing how to root via SuperSu and Magisk; I know those methods have to be done a certain way because of the partition system. But I have not seen any posts about Kingroot. Would it work the successfully? I imagine it going like this:
1) root with Kingroot
2) boot to TWRP via ADB
3) flash TWRP
4) flash SuperSU if desired
Or
4) if desired, flash a kernel, flash Magisk, flash TWRP again
5) boot to system, uninstall Kingroot
Does that sound right? Would Kingroot even work to begin with?

True, but if you happen to want to root while away from a computer it could be useful.
In any case, it was simply a curiosity about whether it would even work at all. I doubt I'd ever use Kingroot for my Pixel.

Oh okay. I was just curious. I haven't tried kingroot but since rooting requires patching the boot.img and I don't know if you can do that while booted into the OS I'd say no. I am only assuming how kingroot works but again whatever the solution it needs to be able to make changes to the boot.img without already having root privs.
The closest solution I would see is having twrp already loaded.

Even if it did work it wouldn't work the way you are describing. King Root basically acts like malware and refuses to give root privileges to any app that interferes with its functioning. Adaway won't work with King Root because adware is part of the King Root program. You also wouldn't be able to install SU while King Root is on your phone. King Root will actively prevent you from installing any other root program. People used to be able to do what you describe but King Root was updated to prevent you from installing SU.
