Problems with FOTA/TWRP/rooting - Sony Xperia M

Hello,
I read posts here about rooting, flashing TWRP for about 3 hours now and I feel like my head is exploding :silly:
I have the stock firmware 15.4.A.1.9_CE installed on my C1905 and wanted to flash TWRP like in a tutorial video and later found out that I need to flash a kernel with FOTA first, but I can't flash the FOTAKernel.img on my SD card because I have no Superuser installed on my phone which I currently can't because I'm not able to root my phone because the phone is denying installation of Towelroot though the checkbox for unsafe apks is checked.
I'm running out of patience and knowledge what to do now.
Please help me. :crying:

[Q] which recovery after root?

Howdy, I plan on rooting my tablet in a few days. The instructions say to root, then, flash stock recovery. Is flashing the stock recovery necessary if i plan on using goo to install twrp recovery prior to flashing cleanrom on my device?
Also, the cleanrom thread says to flash the appropriate version of twrp. Am I to assume the latest version on goo is the ticket for that?
Also, while the dev has indicated there will be further versions after 1.2, can I expect to simply download updates, or expect to flash new versions every time? I guess this particular question doesn't really matter I'm just interested.
And finally, has anybody used heimdall with any success with the p600? Google says no...
I would have posted this on the clean rom thread but was not allowed since I have not had enough posts yet. moving this to there would not hurt my feelings.
I appreciate any and all help and of course feel appreciation and give thanks to the developers who have put in such great effort. Thank you.

That's a lot questions! Lol.... here's two answers:
If you want to flash CleanRom, then you don't need to root your stock rom, just use Odin to flash TWRP and that will either let you install CleanRom or let you install SuperSU (root). You can the recovery from their website.
I'm on the P600 and the goomanager didn't install the recovery correctly, so I had to flash with odin.
I don't know about Heimdal. Good luck on your ten posts

My understanding is that root is neccesary to flash twrp. If that is not the case, they why use Odin at all?
Heimdall is a program reverse engineered to work on Samsung devices. Potentially more stable than odin. Open source. I use a linux box but will have access to a windows box in a week or so.

Furthermore, for verification, super su does not root your device, it only manages the permissions of those programs that need root access. Can somebody else chime in for verification?

No, you CAN flash recovery without rooting, and if your not rooted then TWRP asks if you'd like to install SuperSU and root that way. I guess you don't have to believe me though

that sounds great but doesn't TWRP need root in order to be installed? my understanding is yes. If not I should be able to install it using Goo manager. from what I've read the developers for GooManager are very serious and would not allow a non working application to remain in their program.

You wont need to root if your intent is to just flash my ROM.
Appropriate version would be 2.6.3.3
As far as updates / patches... Depends on the issue. Mostly do full updates if something changes. If its a bug fix then I would just do a patch.
Hemidall? No, never tried it.
Basically to flash a custom ROM you just need to flash TWRP using Odin then flash the ROM using TWRP.
You dont techincally need to root unless you want to stay stock and have root. But that is no fun!
Also, the goo.im app does not work with this device so you have to use Odin manually (for simplicity).

I read the TWRP thread, and others are having problems installing through goomanager. I also wanted to install it that way, but it wouldn't work. But it didnt work. It also wouldn't flash through the stock recovery. Hence, odin.

thank you for the clarification! in order to flash TWRP in Odin do I simply use the AP slot as you would to flash autoroot by their directions?
one of the things thats tripped me up is that on the TWR P site as well as in Google Play it says you must have a rooted device. This would suggest that in order to get TWRP on your device it would already have to be rooted. it seems strange to me that the tablet will allow odin to install it on a non rooted device.
hoops I guess. So being a non Windows user, that is not familiar with the Windows operating system,( bet you don't hear that everyday) ,I would suppose the order would go something like this.
1 download Samsung drivers from kies.1
2. Download TWRP from site for odin.
3. Open odin.
4. go to download mode on device.
5. Plugin device and wait for it to be recognized.
6. Drag the Twrp zip for odin to the AP slot, enter,
7. Wait for it to .......?
8. Reboot.
9 download the cleanrom rom.
10. Reboot into recovery
11. Installcleanrom
12 enjoy.
a couple of other questions concerning the SD card. Should I leave it in during any or all of these processes? I've seen where other people have had problems with their SD card not being read is this due to it not being installed when they install clean rom? I really do appreciate all the help.
not breaking my device by doing something stupid is paramount. Lol! as I will be using my daughters computer any other information regarding the installation of the Samsung drivers or Odin would be much appreciated I do not want to hurt her computer.

I kept my SD card installed while flashing TWRP in Odin and had no problems. If you're worried then take it out. As far as Odin goes... run it as an admin and after connecting your Note (in DL mode) just click on "AP" and navigate to the directory where you saved the TWRP file. From there just hit "start" and your good to go. Odin isn't gonna mess anything up on your daughters pc and if you have a copy of the stock recovery just reflash it if you run into problems with TWRP. Also, read through all the different threads/watch YouTube videos. Most of this has been covered many times over and you can see what success or problems others have had.

Planning on rooting my P600 and after reading Hahahalalala's earlier post, will follow BeansTown106's instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490805).
It appears I need to flash from p600Autoroot.7z for v4.3 and CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.zip for v4.4? Please correct me if I'm wrong?!
On step 4, it says to "...flash the stock mj4 recovery provided". Planning on installing TWRP v2.7.1.0 - can I just do it here? Or do I need to do this step and afterwards install
TWRP (and flash Super SU)? I'm curious about the reason for flashing the stock recover and whether it's version specific...
Currently I'm at v4.3 (touchwiz) and haven't done the latest OTA yet (presumably it's v4.4.2). It'd be best to do the OTA update and then root, right? Reading the earlier post, it
appears this method works for v4.4...

1) If you flash twrp then you can't do OTA any more
2) The root instruction would work but will trip the Knox and void warranty.
3) Not possible to downgrade back to 4.3
4) if you not use twrp but reflash stock recovery image then OTA would work but will wipe out root if you take the OTA upgrade what ever that maybe 4.4.3?

I used these full instructions for Kit-Kat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2719750
One step in that is the CF-autoroot, but there are other steps as well. I just ignored the "To Flash New Update" part, but maybe you need it. I was already on the latest OTA before I started. Trips knox but I'm sure you knew that.

1) That's why I figured best to do the OTA first - just had other devices that didn't have root methods for the newest update & wanted to thought best to ask first!
2) I'm out of warranty (due to drop and repaired screen) so warranty is of no issue...but thanks for the warning
3) Thought that to be the case, but again hearing it may be possible and also can't. Don't foresee doing it, but was curious...
4) Plan on flashing the latest (CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5) via odin, reboot, flash twrp v2.6.x as I hear 2.7.x may have a few issues. Only problems I've read are potential with Super SU - not sure if it's part of the root flash, needs to be flashed
separately, or just dl'd from Google Play Store? Guess will just flash root, see if app is there, if not try Play Store. If not, then go back and find the flashable SU dl.

Actually latest posts appear to show some issues with SU when using CF-autoroot (maybe due to them being on kitkat?). Appears flashing CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 does the trick. Sounding like it's part
of the flash, and can then just flash twrp (figuring be safe with v2.6.x for now).

Yeah you want TWRP 2.6.3.3. It won't work right with 2.7.x. Might as well flash the SuperSU. Most of the root apps worked fine but Viper4Androod did not find Busybox even after using the installer. Need to go back a version of V4A too due to bugs but it still didn't work. Tried freezing Knox apps that might be interfering but eventually just installed that MagazineUX ROM and now it works. Everything else should work easier.

Thanks - that was the post had been reading through - appears after the kitkat OTA, latest posts mentioned problems with SU when running the original CF-AUTO Root method (flashing autorootp600mj4.tar.md5). Wondering if flashing the "newer" CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5
would be best. At this point feel confident either way!

Yep, will be downloading TWRP v2.6.3.3 and flash it and SuperSU after rooting. After rooting, will be curious to see where I sit with superuser (sorry, reading the latest posts kind of muddy whether a SU app is already installed or not, lol)...

I find a way in youtube that its easy and dont need PC or Odin.
The process consist in first flash twrp.
second, enter twrp and instal supersu.

Ok. Not work.
To flash twrp you need odin or other custom recovery pré instaled.
I downloaded Odin but coud not instal the twrp.
Used last versions of all.

twrp : openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-t03g.img.tar
It shows pass. but still old and original recovery.
*my knox counter was 0 and got to 1
Maybe its the last firmware update?
Someone has any idea?

was simple.. just have to read the big and red warning on the root topic, that alert about the possibility of the custon recovery be overwrited by the original recovery on reboot process. Just have to uncheck autoreboot and boot manualy into recovery mode after finish.
I've used the twrp version that has n7100 in name too. Dont know if make any diference.

Anyways, for those noobs trying to root your phones like me. Avoid odin files that are less than 1mb.. its virus.. I instaled one and mess with my computer.. now i have many ads in all browsers showing stupid offers and making everything slower.
Seccond thing is be sure that the download of supersu zip file is complete. Mine was corrupted and i just realize that when in twrp.. luckly i have dowloaded a previous version too that saves me from doit all over again.
After root process supersu did not apear in my apps... but i downlload and instaled supersu in playstore and update root binary in the app. I remove knox in supersu too, to avoid anoing messages like sugested by supersu app.
Everything works.

[Q] V50020f Root and Recovery Install?

Hi all. It's been a while since I've flashed anything on my v500, but last night I decided to try and update to the latest TWRP. Well, I soft bricked it somehow. It was running CM 12.x with TRWP great before, but I just had to mess with it. Anyway, I was able to use the LG Mobile Support Tool and I got the pad up and running again, so here I am sitting on stock v50020f 4.4.2 firmware. This is where I'm lost. Most threads I see about rooting/loki/TWRP are for 4.2.2 and below.
I originally used Kingoroot, and was able to get root with that, but couldn't update binaries with SuperSU or SuperUser. I'm not totally comfortable with that method anyway (sending data to Chinese servers and all), so I disabled it. Can anybody point me to threads about successfully rooting and installing custom recovery from 20f? I've been reading around in circles and my head is swimming.
I appreciate any help. I don't need hand-holding, just a push in the right direction.

EDIT: I was able to get root using the ioroot sideload method. Just not sure how to install TWRP.
EDIT2: I installed TWRP using the method in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/orig-development/recovery-official-twrp-t3135886 with Rashr. Went to restore an old backup, and it softbricked again. I'm guessing that backup was corrupt. The TWRP I flashed should have Loki (or whatever bypass) built in, right?

Best way to root,unlock BL and install custom recovery

I have Xperia z1 compact running stock non-rooted 14.6.A.1.236 rom. My bootloader is locked. I want to be able to install custom roms. What's the best way to root, unlock bl and install custom recovery? I've been searching forum for past few days but most of the download links redirect to d-h.st. and that breaks the chain of needed files.
Also i never used flashtool and i don't know should i use Sony flashtool or "original" one

I found PhilZ Dual Recovery (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2647480) which works with locked bootloader. Some people wrote there they installed the recovery on 5.0.2, so it seems I have to downgrade first (I'm on 5.1.1), even though it doesn't say that in the manual..? - if you can't answer that I'll ask that later then in the linked thread.
Next thing: I rooted with Kingroot, but want to switch to SuperSU - cant switch because theres a problem with the binary, so I have to flash it anyway through custom recovery.
Can I now root with Kingroot, install PhilZ Dualrecovery and when it boots into Recovery Mode, can I just flash the SuperSu.zip?
OR would I need to boot normally first after custom recovery install, then uninstall Kingroot, to unroot, and THEN flash SuperSU in Recovery?

I don't trust any universal rooting apps. Only way to legit root your phone is to downgrade to kitkat and then root using exploit, then flash prerooted lollipop (that is if you wan't to stay on stock rooted rom). If you don't plan on staying on stock room and only want quick root you have to use kingroot since that's only universal root that can root z1c. When it comes to recovery there you have two choices. To use xzdualrecovery or to unlock bootloader (you will loose drm keys which means you will lose stuff like x-reality) and flash normal recovery. I would go for dual recovery because if you ever wan't to get back to stock you can since stock recovery isn't getting overwritten with xzdr. But if you choose to unlock bootloader first backup TA (you have to be rooted) and then unlock.

If you don't plan on staying on stock room and only want quick root you have to use kingroot since that's only universal root that can root z1c. When it comes to recovery there you have two choices. To use xzdualrecovery or to unlock bootloader (you will loose drm keys which means you will lose stuff like x-reality) and flash normal recovery. I would go for dual recovery because if you ever wan't to get back to stock you can since stock recovery isn't getting overwritten with xzdr. But if you choose to unlock bootloader first backup TA (you have to be rooted) and then unlock.
