Hi all. It's been a while since I've flashed anything on my v500, but last night I decided to try and update to the latest TWRP. Well, I soft bricked it somehow. It was running CM 12.x with TRWP great before, but I just had to mess with it. Anyway, I was able to use the LG Mobile Support Tool and I got the pad up and running again, so here I am sitting on stock v50020f 4.4.2 firmware. This is where I'm lost. Most threads I see about rooting/loki/TWRP are for 4.2.2 and below.
I originally used Kingoroot, and was able to get root with that, but couldn't update binaries with SuperSU or SuperUser. I'm not totally comfortable with that method anyway (sending data to Chinese servers and all), so I disabled it. Can anybody point me to threads about successfully rooting and installing custom recovery from 20f? I've been reading around in circles and my head is swimming.
I appreciate any help. I don't need hand-holding, just a push in the right direction.

EDIT: I was able to get root using the ioroot sideload method. Just not sure how to install TWRP.
EDIT2: I installed TWRP using the method in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/orig-development/recovery-official-twrp-t3135886 with Rashr. Went to restore an old backup, and it softbricked again. I'm guessing that backup was corrupt. The TWRP I flashed should have Loki (or whatever bypass) built in, right?

Hi all. This is my first LG phone and I looked around but didn't see any reason not to fully upgrade firmware before I root. Any input any drawbacks of upgrading fully? Also, this is a t-mobile used phone and the back of the battery case has a wireless charging stickon in it. Is this standard for this phone? I havent researched the look/brand of it yet as I have just got it. Thanks. Its a nice phone. Can't wait to get tweaking!

The latest build 10R broke all the rooting tools.
Assuming you are still on build "c" or "m"...
Root first w/ PurpleDrake and make sure it installed (TWRP) custom recovery. It should also install SuperSU but I can't remeber, you may have to read a bit.
I would then update to the latest TWRP version which can be done easily with TWRP manager. Make sure you install busy box when prompted by TWRP manager!
Perform a nandroid backup before updating!!!
Then flash the "R" firmware with TWRP flashable zips available here.
Be certain to flash SuperSU before rebooting! If you forget there is no way to get root again after a reboot.

Thank you. I actually found that out the hard way. Flashed back a version and got root. Wifi calling and text not working yet so I found the exact thread you posted and was gonna try. Great tip on flashing supersu though. I'm new to LG but looking forward to getting this phone right. Thanks for the input.

I rooted this tablet last week (just rooted, I left it stock) and this morning I notice there is a system update waiting to be installed. I am reading Lollipop is starting to roll out in Asia somewhere now but I am in the US lol. I thought it wasn't possible to get OTA updates once you root? If I allow this to update will I get unrooted, would it even work?
I foolishly allowed it to update after checking in Supersu to not allow the root to be lost and now I keep booting directly into TWRP lol. How do I wipe this tablet from TWRP so that it is fully stock again (NO ROOT)? I see a factory reset option in TWRP do I need to include all the partitions in the advanced wipe or is just the normal wipe method enough? Or will this not work at all? I already tried to restore the phone using TWRP to my backup and that didn't seem to work.

Simply rooting a device doesn't keep it from TRYing to update via OTA. Rooting can prevent an OTA from succeeding, plus can hard or soft brick if you try to take an OTA, although usually only if you've gone beyond just rooting by installing a custom recovery or changing the contents of any partition besides Data by, fire example, downgrading your bootloader (aboot.img) or modem, running a custom kernel, debloating system apps, etc.
There are at least three variants of the G Pad 8.3. I have the VK810.4G, which do you have?
I know on the VK810.4G, Verizon just released a very, very minor update from LG build #23A to 24A. Still KitKat.

There's the main problem, you had a custom recovery installed. OTAs are applied with the stock recovery, that's why it (probably soft) bricked it.

You might not be able to fix it from TWRP. You could try @autoprime 's fix recovery zip available the same page his flash2 scripts are. You'll have to Google:

Otherwise, you'll have to restore to 100% stock unrooted and start from scratch. Two methods.
One is using LG's official Mobile Tool, which will download the latest official ROM in KDZ format (takes 20+ minutes to download) and flash it with your tablet in Download mode (probably with the tablet off, hold both up and down volume buttons in and while holding them, turn the tablet on.
I've got to go do something so hopefully someone else will help further or I can get back to you later, dont know when though.

OK now that I am up and running fine the system update message keeps popping up. This time I KNOW not to try and upgrade while rooted. Is there any way I can stop the tablet from constantly giving me the upgrade message? Can I do anything from TWRP to stop this?

Don't install TWRP. I was rooted (w/ stock recovery) with 23A, and the OTA update worked fine (still rooted).

TWRP is already installed..
Can I uninstall TWRP, keep root , do the update and then reinstall TWRP? If so how? Is there any other way around this issue, any way of not having the tablet continue to ask me to upgrade? Thanks BTW...

Yes, you can do that, but I don't know the steps. Others here do.
Why do you want TWRP? I thought the usual reason was to install custom ROMs (in which case you won't receive any OTA updates). If you just want to root, it's an unnecessary complication (as you have discovered).

Thanks Dean, and yes I do agree with you about it being a complication. I was always under the assumption if I rooted a phone that I needed to also use some sort of recovery god forbid I had an issue with the phone not booting up or something so I could possibly fix the issue, make a backup/install a backup etc. Maybe I will ****can it if someone will tell me how to do so without losing my data or root.

FYI I just froze the update using Titanium backup pro and my problem is solved for now..
Hi, guys...I just unrooted, factory restored, and used flashtool to fully restore my sprint lgls990 following some connectivity issues. My phone is currently on android 4.4.2.
I am seeking some advice/help on basically end-to-end help. Initially, I used stump to root my phone and then installed xposed and a few other items.
What I want to do now is run the easiest root possible, create a backup, and then install a custom rom. Specifically, I'd like to use CM10 CM11: Royal Blue Cobalt from the Play Store.
I have a strong concern about rom stability, though. I want/need lte data, wifi, phone, playstore, maps, and the like, but don't want to sprint bloatware crap. Is that what a custom ROM does, keep the essentials and dump the carrier crap?
So:
I think using stump will be the easiest root process.
I have read lots about twrp, but haven't found very good instructions for a noob like me, can anyone point me to "the" thread for installing and using twrp?
Where do I find the rom so I can use the theme I have noted above?
Basically, I'm looking for a roadmap for the threads I'll need to accomplish this.

Ok - re-used stump root to re-root my phone. Dl'd root checker to confirm and it confirmed rooted. Though root checker says to dl supersu to verify root, I didn't initially. Subsequently, dl'd supersu, granted root checker access, and confirmed root.
Now I wonder if I back up now or if I should have backed up before root? Answer: Seems that I cannot make a nandroid backup without recovery and to have recovery my boot loader needs to be unlocked, er rooted, right?

Seems unlocking the boot loader is different than rooting the phone.
I suppose I can just use TWRP to back up the device?

Okay, using this site - http://lg-g3.wonderhowto.com/how-to/unlock-bootloader-install-custom-recovery-lg-g3-0157830/ - I dl'd flashify, dl'd my ls990 img to the phone via the guide and will install next.

Successfully installed the lg ls990 .img via Flashify; re-booted into twrp; and successfully created a backup. Then I connected the g3 to my pc and moved the very large backup file to my pc.

I didn't include EFS in the back up...problem? No problem, just did another backup and chose all options available.
Now on to installing a cm rom...

I rooted using systemless root - I have changed nothing in my system partition as far as I know as I wanted root for AdBlock and TitaniumBU.
I am using the stock kernel too.
TWRP 2.8.7.2
I now have a 6.0.1 OTA - but I'm 100pc confused as to exactly how to go about installing this.
Some people seem to say OTA on this setup will work fine on similar setups.
Others say I need to flash 101 things to get it working.
Literally no idea.
How I Did it...
From a site with this in the title:

Systemless root doesn't break ota, non-stock recovery breaks OTA.
Unlock bootloader, flash 6.0.1, flash TWRP, flash systemless root...
I did this:
Went back to stock recovery, by flashing via ADB, rebooted downloaded and attempted to install OTA on phone. Process started, rebooted, proceeded and then failed with error . Rebooted, got Factory image.
Extracted and ran flash-all.bat ONLY AFTER Removing the -w from this line:
fastboot -w update image-bullhead-mmb29k.zip
Got latest SuperSU v2.61 zip with auto boot patcher:

Copied this to Memory on phone.
Flashed/Installed TWRP Recovery using ADB.
Booted into TWRP Recovery and installed SuperSU.
So now I'm running systemless rooted 6.01 on a Nexus 5X with mmb29k and every thing is working.
I think even though I rooted systemless 6.0, the modified Boot Image was still not letting OTA work.
We shall have to wait and see on the next OTA. Maybe just going back to stock recovery will be all that's needed.
There are some ADB commands that allow you to temporarily select a recovery image, but I'm not sure how that works.

Somehow got completely bricked, but I found the full RUU exe file for AT&T using Google which rebuilt everything, with full (ugh) bloat. Anyway I'm now back up & running with Marshmallow 6.0 and latest TWRP 3.0.2-0 is successfully flashed. The weird thing is that it does NOT give me the option to root & install SuperSu. I did make sure the "mount system read only" option was unchecked. I also tried installing SuperSU from the app store, but it reports required binary is missing. Is there any way to force TWRP to do it's root thing? It apparently thinks the phone is already done when it's not.
Hope all this mumbo jumbo makes sense. Thanks!

You're doing better then me. From what I've read it looks like you need the supersu.zip, but I think you know that. If you haven't try to install the supersu.zip maybe you'll be able to do it without bootloop (I need to make my post). A new version came out 9.15.2016.
Just flash SuperSu 2.64 or 2.65 using TWRP and that's it. Look for the link using google. Ohter versions cause bootloop.
