Hello!
So currently I'm looking for some advice on where to go from here. I bought my SM-n910v DE directly from Samsung because I wanted the unlocked boot loader right from the get-go. Once I got it, I decided to root it. I don't exactly remember the exact method to root, I believe it may have been with an app.
Since then, I have not taken any OTAs and so I am still on 4.4! I don't know what disabled the OTA, or if I needed to activate it somehow since I didn't buy the phone from Verizon, and perhaps there was a step I missed when I activated it with them. Either way, I have enjoyed my Note 4 a ton. I like being on 4.4 since I know it'll function as expected and I had read some people talking about later releases being not so great on the Note 4 particularly so I decided to not worry about the OTAs and stay on KitKat.
So I was trying to do some research on perhaps customize it a bit more, and so when I tried a few steps, and I booted into recovery (vol up + home + pow), the blue text above booting into recovery did appear, but then when the green droid first appears, the phone seems to reset itself back into the green droid again, again. It is as if recovery mode (starting with the pic of the green droid with its belly open) restarts again, and again and again. Never getting passed the green droid.
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what to do about the OTAs. What is the safest path to a good stable release? do I need to un-root prior to taking an update? Do I have to do updates in succession? Can I even take an OTA with root? will that break things?
also about the loop I'm experiencing. What could it be? If I revert back by attempting to flash a stock firmware, or something, will I need to re-root? Would I need to try? Since I can't even get into recovery, can I even revert?
Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for this forum and the awesome people that help in here!

I would think that yes, you will have to unroot and then I would take it to a Verizon store and ask them to flash it. I know Sprint will. I had a bad ota. They fixed it free as well. I can tell you that 6.0.1 is solid. This one is rooted and running 7.1.1 not bad either. Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

Thanks for the response. I might have to end up going and have them just flash it. I was wondering if I could avoid going over there. If perhaps there was a way to reset the phone through Odin or something. Glad to know 6.0.1 is solid as well! cheers!:good:

Looking to put my wifes Inc 2 back to stock. We just got the phone from verizon via replacement for bricking hers during the new software update. As soon as I got it I had it rooted. Now, the camera will not work at all. So before I go back to Verizon I really need to get it back to stock. So I checked the Inc 2 Dev forum and didnt see anything but the ChinaCom update. I need the VZW WWE stock 2.3.4 So if anyone could point in the right direction, thatd be fantastic. Ive also tried flashing 4 separate ROMs and 3rd party camera apps, it just FC's. So Im going to take it back AGAIN and see what theyll do for me.

There really should be more of an ability to reset to factory, literally.
It's nice being able to wipe all user data and stuff but the custom rom still remains.
Sometimes people need to return a phone or need to go back to stock to install an OTA update ya know!
But custom roms are generally superior so whatever.

I Agree with this. There's been plenty of times where I have needed to sell or bring the phone back to the store, but without it being TRULY stock, they wont do anything. Plus alot of folks don't want to buy a rooted or S-Off phone becaues it voids the warranty.
There needs to be a way to completely revert to stock. Like it was out of the box. As easily as possible.
So I am running the stock rom but have root access. the update pops up every 5 minutes to remind me to install it. I let it install and about 3 second in i get a yeild sign with an exclamation point in it. and the phone stops there. I waited for about 3 hours and nothing happened. Anybody know what I need to do here? I used Galaxy Nexus root toolkit v1.3 to root my phone. BTW i am with verizon
For as far as i now you cant update a rooted device. i sugest unrooting an try to update agian.

Yes you can. You can't update a phone with CWM recovery though.

Correct a rooted phone can update but not with any custom recovery. You need to flash back to the factory stock recovery.

OK so looks like everyone is here was incorrect. The 4.04 rooted update is here in the XDA forums all i needed to do was flash it and the new antenna and everything is working fine now. here are the links.

Your right, stupid answers, that's not an ota update you did. That was pulled from a phone which was updated and packaged into a flashable file to use on a rooted device. But a carrier ota update as your device was asking you to update will not work without stock recovery.

Well, you are right that there are a lot of partially right and partially wrong answers in this thread. But what are you saying is not exactly right either.
1) There is a difference between updating your existing build (like what you had asked to do in the first post) and flashing an entirely new build.
2) There is a difference between running a stock ROM (like what you were running before) and running a ROM that looks like it's stock, but is not (like what you are running now).
3) Root has NO impact whatsoever on your ability to install OTA updates on your stock ROM.
4) An OTA update will NOT install with a stock recovery UNLESS you are using the stock recovery version that came with the build you are using. (It seems like a lot of toolkits are flashing non-matching stock recoveries).
5) An OTA update file can EASILY be installed if you have CWM installed. See here.
6) Your phrase "unrooting and flashing back to stock" is silly, as flashing back to stock replaces your ROM, so why would you need to "unroot" your current ROM only to flash a stock ROM overtop? You don't root a device - you root an Android OS build. The phrase "root my device" does not make any sense.
I was wondering if someone would know of a simple way to receive an update to my gs3 after rooting, I recently purchased it. It is the U.S cellular variant and I must say I was pretty impressed (shocked) that on my first attempt ever at rooting a device I was able to root my gs3 without a single problem using the CMteamepic root file>>cwmrecovery tar file>> odin file>>> based on the sprint illustration on youtube. Followed it to a T and voila'... It was done, I actually did it without a single issue to the root process or to phone If someone could help with the update issue, I tried updating and the phone actually went through the process all the way to where it asks where you want to boot from and then press the power button. I'm not sure if I was suppose to scroll to something else prior to pressing the power button but when I did so from the first selection and phone booted up it said update failed. If anyone could please help I would greatly appreciate it.

You can't apply ota updates while rooted. You need to unroot if you really want the update. Honestly, most devs just incorporate the updates in to their roms once the updates are are released anyways.
The above is true however...
In my opinion I say **** the whole OTA. The baseband is what counts. The rest of the updates are sprint garbage. As above post states,Most roms are updated to reflects the ota's however if your on an older build I recommend grabbing the newest baseband here http://www.mediafire.com/?u4793wlu5r97t3g. I am unlocked and rooted on my Galaxy Nexus but otherwise stock, no ROM. When the Jelly Bean update came through I thought that even though I was rooted, I'd still be able to take it, but when I tried to, I got errors. So thinking about this, here are my questions.
1) Obviously, I'm not stock because the update is signed. If I wanted to take the update (I'd like to be as close to stock as possible still being rooted) am I correct in that I'd have to relock bootloader and unroot?
2) I tried to look through the development threads to see if there was a stock rooted rom that I could flash through Clockwork, but I didn't see anything that was THAT close to stock. I'm wondering what suggestions people would have for me to get what I'm looking for.
3) If I'm completely off base and I should be able to take that update, I'd like to know if anyone knows why I'm getting errors. I tried flashing the update as a zip through clockwork, but I got the same error (sorry, didn't write down).
I messed around with my OG Droid quite a bit, rooted my Droid Inc and Droid Charge, and after messing around with the crap UI's that OEM's wanted to wrap around android, I just really want that stock experience. All suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance (sorry for the noobishness).
I think its recovery that has to be stock to receive OTA updates. As your trying to flash with CMW you have a custom recovery.
I believe you are manually able to flash the update.

Not correct. Lock state of your bootloader, and even root, have no impact on you being able to apply an OTA update.

I've been using a factory ROM Sprint Samsung Galaxy SPH-L710 happily for quite a while. Outside of custom launchers and Widget Locker type stuff I've been trying hard to live [happily] within the factory constraints. Then I discovered Tasker, Daily Roads Voyager, and a bunch of other really fun stuff. And down the rabbit hole I went.
So thus far I've rooted using the excellent Saferoot found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50744761
Now I want to be able to do nandroid backups so I can capture snapshot-in-time backups of my device. I keep seeing reference for using Snapshot on the Sprint S3 but the only sources I've seen for downloading Safestrap do not specifically reference the Sprint Galaxy S3 so I'm unsure if it's supported or not.

You dont need safestrap on the sprint version of s3 since we dont have locked bootloaders. Its mainly for the variants with locked bootloaders. You can ODIN either TWRP, CWM or Philz.
It was my understanding that the latest OTA 4.3 release specifically locked the bootloader and installed Knox. Which is why I went with Saferoot to begin with.
The firmware only installed KNOX apps and bootloader. SO, you can remove KNOX from the phone but not the bootloader. NEVER try to downgrade the bootloader as you will brick. You are stuck on that bootloader until someone figures something out.
Edit: The bootloader is not locked.

So, the conclusion is there's no work around or tool to allow nandriod backups even after rooting the OTA 4.3 update. No Safestrap viable for this particular device and factory ROM?
You can create backups from CWM, TWRP or Philz at anytime even on 4.3 MK3 without any issues. There is no safestrap for the sprint variant only ATT and Verizon (to my knowledge).
For clarification then the Sprint variant can use odin safely? Are there specific ROMs that are we are limited to? I went the SafeRoot route myself but have been petrified to try anything else because it seems every post I read contradicts the one before it. I downloaded the Online Nandroid Backup app and it seems to be working. I landed here trying to educate myself on SafeStrap. All I want is 4.1.2 back on my phone. This OTA has totally made my once silky smooth handset a laggy battery sucking pos!

I have used ODIN numerous times and have had no issues! You can flash any ROM you wish just dont downgrade the bootloader or you will brick. BTW, 4.3 is silky smooth for me! I have my S3 running at least 24hrs and around 2.5 to 3hrs screen time (moderate to heavy use) per charge.

Thanks. My stock device started freezing up intermittently and randomly locking up and rebooting. Typing is a joke because it will freeze mid sentence and then all the sudden crap out all the keystrokes like it had to stop and think about what it was doing. Also the Google Maps change and YouTube change annoy the hell out of me. Maps will not lock in on GPS unless i pull down the info bar from the top of the screen and toggle the GPS button off and on. Just a major frustration. This is the only phone I've had to date that I had absolutely no complaints about until 4.3. Sorry for the rant but thanks for the info.

I've been perfectly happy with 4.3 and have had no issues, in fact it's made my S3 the first Android phone I haven't specifically hated after using an iPhone for almost 2 years. Everything works great, and it's fast, and I've loaded all sorts of custom launchers and lock screens and now have it rooted and running various Tasker automation. Great stuff. I'm finally sold on Android.
Regarding your random reboots/locks I had a Galaxy S2 with a dying power button switch that used to do that for months before I finally attributed it to the power switch specifically (when it finally died completely I finally realized it was the switch all along). That doesn't explain any other issues you're having, but it's something to consider. If you're rooted you can probably disable the power switch and assign some other hard button to work as the power button for a couple days as a test.

Thanks for the insight. I don't think it's hardware related since it was never an issue before the OTA but I am willing to try anything and will try it if I ever get the SuperSU to keep from randomly stopping.

I really need some help here. I'm looking to switch to the s3 but all this talk of knox and stuff is really turning me away from it because rooting and using custom roms are a big thing to me, i just need a device that can support it well. So what exactly do you mean when you say downgrade the bootloader? and would i be able to flash roms that run kitkat? or would i have to update my device to kitkat and root while running 4.4?

This is what I would do if you dont have 4.4:
1 Odin the official stock ND8
2 Flash TWRP 2.6.3.0
3 Go to the dev thread and folow the direction in OP and flash Wicked X 7.3 (custom 4.4) & thank bilgerryan
If you have 4.4 then proceed with 2 & 3!
You will then have a custom 4.4 rom on your S3!

2. flash Philz recovery cause that one supposedly works best with ND8
