[Q] Android O as a daily driver? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Is anyone using the early preview build as a daily driver? If so have you found any issues?

I am using it from the last 12 hrs. There are graphic/frame rate issues, app crashes if you switch device theme to "inverted " under display settings. If you keep it back to "Pixel ", things are smooth and fine.
Apple music isnt opening for some reason. No other issues noticed.

I've seen phone call issues. Android pay doesn't work yet. I think it will depend on how reliant you are on the device. It's a fun build though.

I think phone call issues would be a deal breaker for using it as a daily driver. Could you elaborate though on the phone call issues you experienced?

I flashed this on my 5x which is a data only Fi sim so I don't use it for phone or messaging, sorry. However, I did see other posts of people not being able to call or receive. I'll find the posts and link them here in a few. And then there were a few folks that were able to make calls, so I guess ymmv. Just be prepared to flash back if it doesn't work for you. brb

Gmail isn't loading emails for me. It syncs them but when I open them they don't load. Microsoft's Outlook does this too. And searches I type out via Google app never go through.

Not having issues on my end, Gmail worked perfectly before I removed it for inbox.
Searches also work fine on my end.

Gmail, phone calls, messaging, camera..All works perfect for me..As I said, only issue was when I changed the display theme to inverted..In normal settings, all works just fine..

All is working for me as well. It's been about 17 hours without a glitch. I paired my Huawei watch as well. Not using the Pixel launcher as I prefer Nova Launcher with the Dark Pixel icon pack. Using Gmail against MS Exchange server without issue. Mail, calendar and tasks are all operational.

LOL so other than bragging rights to use Android O, what is actually better than in 7.1.1/7.1.2?

Been using it on my pixel XL 128gb with several bugs, however, there is no crash when switching themes from inverted to pixel or vice versa, there is a Hangouts lag, amongst a few other things, I'm gonna keep daily driving On tho, and once root comes out flash substratum transparent theme ftwz, I just wish I could have my viper sound mods back

I am wanting to try the O software on my Pixel xl. Currently on Resurrection Remix ROM with unlocked bootloader. What's the proper way to flash the zip file I downloaded?

Developer option available? If so, is the unlock bootloader available or greyed out? Asking for a friend.

For me it was greyed out and my bootloader is already unlocked.

lots of bugs. calling issues (though I found that to be attributed to the Zedge app). Bluetooth is flaky. Random RAM dumps/reboots. UI froze a few times.
All above mentioned in the release notes, so was to be expected.
Had to take it off for daily use. Did so reluctantly, but I need it to make reliable phone calls, if nothing else.
Really like the direction it is heading however. Will definitely put the next build on and use it, as that is supposed to be the beta milestone.

Bluetooth is flaky when I was on DU ROM it was smooth..UI lag did notice at first but after few reboots & power off have not notice at all, in fact got snappier, phone calls good here.
The direction it's going I like it too, I'm still on it although some issues like game play stiil no go getting FC wifi calling but I activated thru phone app settings all good now
Battery life has been top notch heat stays low snappy Snappy that's one of reasons why still on build

I've been using the DP for the last 12 hours and so far the only problem I have had was some screen flashing when I was setting up Gmail. Other than that calls, messages, YouTube videos, etc. have all worked just fine.

I ran into one issue where the phone seemed to hand for 10-15 seconds but came right back after.
In my opinion, the best new features of O will require the apps to support it (adaptive icons, notification channels, ect.) so betweer 7.1.2 and 8, I can't say today there is something about Android O that I want enough to run a preview build.

does somebody runs into a Problem to not be able to copy files like pics, sounds (mp3) and movies (mp4) back to the phone? i get the phone connected, i can Access the store, but when i start to copy the files, the Connection get lost.. so im not able to copy my data back to the phone.. im not sure, if it's related to the dp1?

Gmail keeps crashing. Also when I am trying to use the app drawer it keeps going blacked out ? It's fun to play with but needs a lot of work.

latest HTC update CRAP

Damn, sorry but i'm a little pissed right now.
I would like to ask any of you fellows if the latest offcial update had any bad effects on your device ?
I have random crashes. When i try to restart it i get the white stupid HTC screen and nothing happens for a while then it restarts again from that point.
If i let it like that it will do this for about 10-15 mins. then it will eventually start.
(Ok, i just noticed that it isnt charging anymore...and when i try to unlock the screen it will turn it off.)
(After a couple of reboots it is charging again)
ffs !!!
Footnote.
I am running a standard Desire, not rooted, very few apps, no task killer.
What to do now ?
Well, now i go to work tomorrow like an idiot and will be nice with every one of my colleagues laughin at me.
YOu know, when all your colleagues use their company iPhones and you try to prove how awesome your Android is and after a couple of weeks your phones doesnt work anymore ppl will laugh at you.
So in the end i think, millions of ppl around the world should not be wrong after all.
make a gold card and flash the full generic ROM to your phone
if that doesn't work then you need to return it
No problem here works fine if not slightly better. The problem with forums is that people generally only post problems. I've seen many other posts with people reporting no issues on stock device. Could be due to an app you have.

The point is, the phone was working properly till the update.
I updated my phone yesterday as well with the OTA update. Now my phone discharges from 100% to 93% instantly from taking it off charge. I know this is an on going problem that has been happening to people since the phones launch, but mine was fine, it never did that until today.. the first time I charged it since I did the update. Coincidence? Somehow I think not
I guess the first thing to do would be a factory reset.
I have the latest update on my Desire and everything works great, certain things are better.
I'll give it a hard reset tonight when I have the time to put all the settings back to how I want. I don't want to loose all my save data on some of my games though, like totemic.. I wont play it again if I have to some of those levels again lol
My phone has just shut down by itself and the only way I was able to start it was by pulling the battery. I have the phone for some time and it's the first time something like this has happened so it has to be because of the update. Also, right after the update some of my widgets (Messages and Wi-Fi) were gone! Battery life seems worse.
I had a few problems when i updated too. but a factory reset made everithing work like a charm. (unrooted)

Bad idea there... You're going to have issues with returning it after flashing a generic ROM...
Have any of the networks actually rolled out this update?
I agree with the battery life being A LOT worse after the update. And I did flash the whole generic Rom onto it. My battery life was amazing before the update. I think it must be something to do with the radio, as they changed it in the update. Gutted now as I can't downgrade again either.

You can flash an older radio without changing the rom, but I think it you need to root first.
My battery life is awesome on this rom. My phones been off charge for 15 hours and its at about 70% now. Any other rom I've used previously custom or stock have given me far worse results.
Interesting to see how there is such a mixed bag of results.
Hi, after I updated OTA I lost WiFi after a couple of days, not immediately... I read here that removing battery helps so I did it. The problem is gone (for now at least)
But I don't want to remove the battery every few days.

It doesn't seem to work better either.

[Q] mms not working on cyanogenmod 7?

hello. i recently flashed the stable release of cyanogenmod 7 on my evo and i've come to realise that i can receive mms, but cannot send them. every time i attempt sending, it just keeps saying "sending..." but never actually sends...i've been trying to browse around, but wasn't able to find any solution to this problem...anyone able to offer any help on this? thanks in advance!

I am running cm7 final but I have been having the opposite problem, I can send but there are some I can't receive. When I have this issue the mms is usually coming from a person not on the Sprint network ...
If you're having issues sending/receiving mms, try the following.
Using adv launcher, create a shortcut to custom activity.
Specifically, settings/*apn*. I can't remember the exact name, but you'll have to navigate the list of junction points when you do the settings pull down.
Once created, go ahead and tap on the shortcut. You'll see 2 apn settings. One will have sprintpcs.com in the MMSC field, the other wont.
For the one that does not, scroll down to APN type. Change the parameter in that field to 'default' (small letters without the quotes).
For the other one, change it to 'mms'
Reboot. You should be good to go.

Well......is kind of like comparing peanuts to apples here BUT take Windows for example! Windows gets released right?! Well is suppose to be BUG FREE and completely sable correct? WELL it isn't! Not every rom on here is 100% BUG FREE and it needs updates/little things fix from time to time because not every phone acts the same way to every rom! CM7 works flawlessly on my phone but as you can see, dude has issues with his MMS! Not trying to start an argument or anything on here BUT don't act all high and mighty because you're using a sense rom where things happen to work a bit better!
It takes bigger balls to do something completely different like an AOSP rom then just play around with .PNGs and call it a ROM! I could take a sense rom and use it as a base and change a couple of things, add some wallpaper and upload it but am I going to?...NO!!...because that's just stupid!
I'm not acting all high and mighty. I just happen to be using a sense ROM now. I've ran CM, too. And Miui, et al.... Like I told someone yesterday, when I buy a new car, I don't need to add things to make the lights go on, or do some fanangling to make the wipers work. MMS is a basic feature of the phone. The basics, like GPS, etc, should work by default, not because you have to type some weird code into you dialer, oh, and do it on another type of mod first, then flash back to CM......

exactly! im not sure why cm7 was finaled, too many bugs yet compared to the deck rom or salvage-mod rom which both are 100% functional.

[Q] How to turn off pesky notification sound...started happening suddenly

I'm a long-time note 2 user and usually have no problem with settings. Out of
nowhere, my Note 2 started sounding a notification tone (first tone in the list)
and I haven't found a way to disable that notification. I think it's related to a secondary email
account... yahoo or Outlook perhaps. Tried the obvious options to turn notifications
off/on but nothing has worked. This thing is waking me up at all hours and disturbing
my lifestyle in general. The only way I've found to turn off the continuous sounding of the tone is to touch the top notification bar. Such a hassle. Any real suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.
This is bull$4!* I agree
This is bad enough to make me want to switch to an iPhone.

If only that were possible. With Android 4.3 the notification is for leaving and rejoining the 4Glte coverage area. For those of us that live on the edge of 4G lte coverage it makes for a long annoying night. I have emergency notifications that I DO need at night, but not the damn network change every 5 minutes.

UPDATE from SPRINT
I talked to Sprint. They have confirmed that many ppl are complaining about the constant "upbeep" and "downbeep" tones. I understand it is not just 4Glte/CDMS coverage change, but also Wifi and Bluetooth availability. They say Samsung is aware of the unpopularity of the issue and will have a patched version out very soon.
I have resorted to disabling 4Glte all the time and disabling WiFi and Bluetooth at night. this seems to be a reasonable short term work around.
Thanks for reading.
Sean
I've never had any notification tone for network/wifi mode changes. I'm not sure why the stock rooted MK4 ROM wouldn't have the same issue but it doesn't or this forum would be full of angry people. I assume you guys are on the stock unrooted MK4 Jellybean ROM? If so, I'm glad I told my wife not to allow the update on her Note 2. I'm currently on stock rooted MK4 ROM and have never had this type of notification. But I would hate it also.
With this all being said, time for you guys to visit the Note 2 Toolkit thread and get rooted! Just one more reason why people prefer to root their devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155
Once rooted you will need to ask ROM devs for help in removing the network notifications. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this with Root Explorer file manager app but you must be rooted to gain access to the file system. This is my only advice because I'm pretty sure an update will not come soon enough for you guys. Updates come from Samsung then Sprint sits on it for testing etc, then Sprint pushes it OTA. You can root and fix the issue in a few minutes or wait and pray for an update.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. And Sean, thanks for talking to Sprint about this matter...I'm sure that all the suggestions here will help others with the same kind of issue I've been experiencing. For me, it's a wait and see kind of thing in that whatever the change in settings I make, it could take an entire day or even more to verify success in shutting down this maddening interruption.
There have been days when, because of a setting I changed, my phone would not ring at all when a call was coming in even though the ringer volume setting was at 100 percent loudness.
The good news for me is that as of this morning, I had an uninterrupted night's sleep last night which, obviously, could mean that I've finally stumbled into a solution. But I am reserving the 'Mission Accomplished' party for when I am absolutely sure my settings are the way they should be. I hate big let-downs, especially when they follow great expectations and celebrations of euphoria.
BTW, the latest changes I made were done inside Facebook's notifications preferences. It seems the Facebook crew are on a mission to keep its members fully involved in troubleshooting the 'traps' they set for us. Kinda reminds me of Hunger Games.
Fingers crossed now...maybe I'll have another full-night's sleep, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
Thanks again to all who pitched in their $000.02000. I'll update here any more results that might be helpful.

Have to admit that rooting is very tempting...thing is, I live in a new area and have no 'guru' type friends here and I'd be concerned that I'd get myself in a corner and not be able to get out. I just don't know enough about rooting to trust myself with doing it to my only smartphone. For instance, does rooting wipe all data completely? I'd have to back up everything I want to keep? And how would I do that backup. Will the memory be re-formatted? How do I know which apps work and which ones don't work on a rooted phone?
Yeah, you guessed it...I'm an old guy...66...and fairly savvy with being a PC/smartphone user...but I haven't studied coding since the mid-eighties and don't remember what I learned about it then. Still, I'm intrigued with rooting my Note 2. Maybe someday.

DrDubner, the Rooting Toolkit I linked to above is very simple and straight forward to use and it has very clear and easy to understand instructions within the user interface. Basically if you can read you can root your phone with ease. Also there is no need to backup anything on you phone or sd card (although it's always advisable just in case) because the root process does not change, delete, wipe, or alter anything other than enabling root permissions on your phone and flashing an insecure boot image & custom recovery in which you do not have to ever use and will not be visible upon normal day to day usage.
BUT with this being said, I would highly recommend that you do some more homework FIRST and find out exactly which app or system process/app that is triggering the notifications BEFORE rooting your phone. It may turn out to be something that can be fixed without rooting your phone and either way you go about this, you need to know the exact cause of the notifications before doing anything.
Hopefully you can get more specific info about your notifications and post them here for others to help you better. Like I said, I've never had the network notifications that you described... on any ROM stock or custom. Perhaps it's not network notifications and mabye it's a system app or user installed app that is triggering these notifications? Keep us posted so we can get to the bottom of this issue much faster than Samsung/Sprint patch update that may never come.
Yeah I've never heard of this problem. Stock 4.3 and my phone never beeps for coverage issues. Idk to me it sounds like there's an app set up to continue reminding you of an unread notification. Like the Messages app reminder feature. Plus he did say taping on the notification bar stops it so that means one of those notifications on the dropdown is the culprit and when you tap on the bar it resets your notification (no blinking or sounds). Maybe it's time for a factory reset.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
I agree. It does sond like a repeat notification. The notification pull down should give you a clear indication of which app is giving you the notification. Double check notification settings within each suspect app itself. If you can't find it that way then uninstall suspect apps one at a time until you find the culprit. Facebook and other social apps would be a good place to start. Also check Sprint visual voice mail and your messaging notification settings. You might be surprised at the simple cause of this.

Apps and data are hit or miss

I've had the OP3 for about a week now. Every application I use seems to be very hiccupy on this phone. I'm only using basic apps like music, facebook, email, and Tapatalk. Wifi seems to take longer than LTE to load stuff or sometimes it just fails to load period. There was sometimes when even trying to change the settings wouldn't work. But then when it does work it's great. I just got the update to 3.2.1 but still seems a little uneasy to me. I would say Roms off of XDA that I've had on past phones have been more stable than this.
Anyone else?

Oh yea. Actually started with the original Google Nexus One way back in the day. So tempted to pull the trigger on the new Pixel 4 XL. But $43 a month for the next two years is not something I look forward too. lol

I don't. But only thing left is My Verizon, Voicemail, Youtube, Maps, LG Health, Google Photos, Google Music, Google Pay, Gmail, and basic apps. Got rid of all the bloat junk though like Facebook that nobody in their right might uses anymore if you value your privacy.
Your room is real smooth. Thanks for this!
I too remember you from G2

Hi, whats the difference in between your and this rom
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/rom-fw-lg-v30-joan-vs996-verizon-30c-t3974139
your download size is bigger than his stock rom
Would there be any way to enable native tethering on this rom?

Hi, I got strange issue, everything works fine, but when I'm trying to send the text it won't go , look at the picture I tried over Wi-Fi, and data. I can receive it but I couldn't and I'm running on your latest build. Any help?

Make a phone call, then see if texting works? I'm not joking. That's a workaround for wonky Verizon service.
On AOSP ROMS every time users reboot they have to make a phone call for texting to work. Don't know why you would need to do this on stock firmware, but give it a shot.
Also try toggling on/off airplane mode.

In my experience, the issues on Verizon regarding texts deals only with not *receiving* texts before making/receiving a call. I've never had issues with sending texts.
Side note: Facebook messenger seems to also play a roll in this...but it doesn't look like you're using it so idk.

No FB at all, turning on/off flight mode didn't do anything, neither calling someone. Still stuck with no sending text. I might try another ROM to see if I can fix it.

It didn't work, so I called the Verizon support and tech told me he has to refresh the 4g data signals servers once he does it that, it started to work, and I was able to send the text, but if I get disconnected due to connecting to Wi-Fi, restarting the phone then texting will stop again and I have to call them to refresh the server.
I'm on pie do you think going back to Oreo should have fix this issues?
I use US Mobile (Verizon MVNO). Will this ROM allow me to use tethering without having to sign in through My Verizon? Or is there some way to disable that verification step?
I used this debloated rom for a couple of days. I thought it ran very well. But, because I need the Hotspot functionality that the US99830b twrp version has, I had to go back to that rom. Thx, for it.
You might want to see if the old hack to disable the subscription check works on the VZW rom.
* Open "build.prop" in the system folder.
* Look for or add at the bottom
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
* Reboot and see if you can enable hotspot/tether without a subscription check.

Thanks for the tip, that worked great for me! Now I can continue to be lazy and stay on VS996 (even though I'm not on VZ directly anymore - I'm on TotalWireless).
Note of clarification - I used FX file manager and FX text edit for this, and the build.prop was located in System/system (not at the root of "system")... in case anyone couldn't find it.
I've been having a hard time getting the zip to flash?
It says the zip file is corrupt?
Is there another mirror or link?
Thanks!

Does the md5 match?
Listed right below the download link:
MD5: bc5b479c92c59d9ee0c6b22e45dcee19
If it matches, then it's not corrupt. There are free md5 tools to download to generate the md5 number and match against the one listed by the dev.
Long explanation guys but I'm using some old tech! Kind of a combo of Droid Turbo, Laptop, and trying to get a new V30 up and running since my little boy slobbered into the charge port of my last one (and dropped it numerous times) and finally my touch screen quit.
I tried checking the MD5 a few times on the old Droid Turbo (which I used to download the zip) but the poor bastard is so wore out that it was having issues with various apps and the size of the zip I think. Story short, I downloaded the Debloat zip from a different mirror and flashed it again and bam! Working awesome. Thanks to all for your awesome work and even more awesome help.
I have a dilemma I would like to ask everyone their opinion on but I will start a new thread. I am looking for native tether solutions for the VS996 rom on the V30 because as @ChazzMatt has pointed out, Volte is going to be needed by the end of the year and US998 won't work correct? And I absolutely need tethering, am still on grandfathered unlimited data.
