ZE551ML Stuck in bootloader. No access to recovery what so ever. - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after 2 hours of searching, trying and failing, I just decided to post here and see what help I can get.
Situation is exactly like the title. Had Lineage 14.1 installed, and decided to update the phone. Rebooted the phone and went to TWRP recovery. For whatever reason, I decided to reboot the phone, which ended up in it coming back to TWRP. This repeated until I got the stock recovery, which put me into bootloader instead. Bootloader is now locked, I can no longer get into recovery, and I'm stuck in bootloader for as long as this continues.
So far I have tried:
--------BEFORE TWRP RECOVERY FAILURE AND BOOTLOADER LOCK---------
Factory Resetting
Formatted and flashed ROM
A couple of ADB commands
--------AFTER TWRP RECOVERY FAILURE AND BOOTLOADER LOCK---------
Replaced recovery image file with stock
Idiotically replaced bootloader image file with stock (Locked, can tell since Android N is no longer bugging me with preboot notification which was present before when bootloader was unlocked)
Idiotically replaced the system image file with stock
A slew of fastboot commands (You can comment and I can see if I have attempted them)
Attempted to continue the fastboot process
Attempted to use an automatic rootkit. Did not like my device, so it did nothing at all.
Manually unplugging the battery
Haven't tried:
Placing rom in sd card, like I've seen people say elsewhere. (No SD card available)
Anything else you tell me that I haven't done
I'm not really interested in keeping any files that I've had before, if that is not already made clear.
Anyone that can help me, I really want this to end. :crying: :crying:

[Q] Assistance in recovering

Hi, I have foolishly (possibly?) wiped Android off of my OneX
I was attempting to apply the Tegra tweak and well things went downhill.
I successfully unlocked the bootloader from HTCdev.
I proceeded to apply Interim ClockworkMod to gain root access
This is where things started to go wrong. Any new reboot would only take me to Clockworkmod screen.
I tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599748
clear cache, davik cache... relocking the bootloader - This results in the device constantly rebooting.
I attempted to apply the RUU ROM's ( from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543604)
From within ClockworkMod I was then able to:
adb push One_X_1.26.401.2_odexed.zip /sdcard/
Once there I used ClockworkMod to apply an update zip (which I was hoping was the Stock ROM).
A reboot just brought me back to Clockwork.
I then locked the bootloader ( fastboot oem lock. ) hoping it would then proceed to boot as expected.
It didn't just going to HBOOT or an attempted recovery (isometric view of a phone with a green arrowed circle -> RED triangle).
Please someone help, starting to panic a bit. The fact I can upload, the fact that there is some basic interactions should imply this is fixable, but how?
The boot to recovery sounds like you have the same problem that I had.
Perhaps you followed the same incorrect instructions as I did. See here for a solution.

This may help.
with the locked bootloader you will only be able to run a proper ruu so before even attempting the instruction above unlock your bootloader again and proceed from there.
I might start working on some core .IMG files that can be flashed through fastboot to get you going again tomorrow
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
THANKS!!!
booted back to the lovely ICS desktop
It looks like I did end up flashing RUU since none of the Vodafone branding is present (and it is actually better!)
No idea what went wrong but probably flashed over the boot as hinted at in the other thread.
The provided img files assisted. just need to get this Tegra thing working (not showing up as a running/registered process but thats another story)
Thanks all

RESOLVED-[Q] HTC One M8 (HK)- Help flashing Lollipop

Hello all, I have searched for more than a couple hours and just seem to be getting nowhere. Here's the deal: I have an HTC One M8 with TWRP, root, an unlocked bootloader and S-ON. I want to install Lollipop, but can't take the OTA.
I know a little bit about what I'm doing, I tried to flash a rooted stock ROM but it didn't take. I wiped all directories but the internal storage. Also wiped the Dalvik, `but I could not get the update to take. I tried a few other things but out of fear of bricking my phone I wasn't very adventurous. I flashed the backup I made beforehand and it worked fine.
I think I have the wrong file...? Could my S-ON be the problem?
Sprint HTC One M8 (HK edition)
Android: v4.4.4
Sense: v6.0
Kernel: 3.4.0
Baseband: v1.08.20.0916
Build:3.31.654.2
All I want to do is flash lollipop. Will I have to lock the bootloader and go back to stock recovery to do it? Can I use adb sideload to install it via adb?
Thank you for your time.

I'm pretty sure my phone is toast.
PLEASE HELP, it worked just fine before I took your advice...
I relocked the bootloader and verified it multiple times before doing this. I made sure everything was exactly the way it was explained in the instructions, all files were correct.
I put the phone into fastboot, which I verified with adb.
I ran the Sprint_HTC_One_M8_HK_4.20.654.10_RUU .exe file and followed the instructions.
Both the program and pphone are currently frozen. They have been this way for almost 2 hours now.
The phone is stuck at the black HTC splash screen and the installer says
Updating...(0/7)... #(<--- these dots are still in motion like its installing)

Ok, the phone is not recognized by adb but is still recognized by fastboot, can I reboot it into TWRP by using
Code:
fastboot reboot recovery
then just flash the backup I made before all this crap started?
*EDIT* RESOLVED
Never mind, I resolved it myself. I just typed
Code:
fastboot reboot
and hit enter. It booted right up.

I looked through it and all user made folders are gone, but all user downloaded apps are still there. I also noticed that superSU root access was off, but the 'apply on boot' option was turned on, could this be what crashed the updater?

[Q] Help! - Rooted Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML) bricked after OTA accidently

followed a tutorial (Cnncted's youtube clip - How to root the ASUS ZenFone 2 ) to root
Accidentally (very stupid) pressed the update option when an OTA update showed up yesterday (Jul 8 2015), and after that the phone won't start properly - stopped at in search of incredible...
No luck with trying to boot into recovery mode (power + volume up). It just vibrates once and the screen is black. Trying to flash recovery image with ADB and flashtool etc, but the MTP usb connection failed. If I connect it to the PC using the USB cable and then press the power button to turn it on (stuck in that ..."incredible" screen), device manager shows the Z200AD name with a yellow exclamation mark beside, and Asus ZenUI software will automatically start. But it's not really recognized by the PC.
So...if you have any suggestions for me to try, please let me know and that would be greatly appreciated!
Harry
p.s. This is a US version, so the it's the WW sku?
Same problem here. I have a rooted 551ML and on July 6th I received an OTA update. I installed it and I'm stuck in boot loop. I have hundreds of family pictures in the internal memory.
The good news is that I have access to boot loader and recovery.
I could not find any custom recovery for Zenfone 2. They are not out yet, right? Is there any way to copy the internal memory of the phone (that doesnt load the OS) to the SD card? Or to paste a file img.boot taken from a downloaded official rom and copy it over the corrupted one on the phone's memory?
If you can access the bootloader, you can do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-to-apply-ota-bootloop-rooted-zf2-t3127835
Btw, there is a custom recovery out there (TWRP, check the Development section), but you will need an unlocked bootloader to use it in your state (I think).
US version is the WW SKU btw. Hope this helps.

Joel, thanks a lot! I will give it a try.
fingers and toes crossed...
I faced this problem too. All I did was to flash the boot.img of my version using fastboot,
Then I flashed the firmware, without factory reset I started the phone.
I was continiously getting an error "com.android.process has stopped". Ignoring that, I just backed up my whole data. Did a factory reset. Updated
Boom!! Everything was normal... I hope this helps
Just a quick update - followed the method in the link that Joel referred to, and everything worked beautifully. I did get two error messages like “the contact stopped working..." “The process android.process.acore has stopped working.” I fixed this problem by clearing the data/cache from the "contact" app, and that did the trick without a factory reset etc.
I unrooted the device using SuperSU. The fastboot screen, however, still shows a random serial number 0123456789ABCDEF. Is there a way to revert it back to the real one? I do see the real one from settings - about - status.

Pretty sure rooting didn't affect my fastboot screen at all.
actually i rooted my zenfone 2 and there was an OTA and i tried to install it without un-rooting my phone. the phone would not turn on and it gets stuck in the boot animation.
the phone wasn't detected by the ADB in my pc so i thought of installing some custom recovery, thought that could help.
i tried installing TWRP but i did not unlock the bootloader and now i am not able to enter in recovery mode either, everytime i try to get in the recovery modethe phone restarts and goes to fastboot mode.
please help.

I was having a similar issue where adb wouldn't recognize my phone but fastboot was detecting it. What I ended up doing was grabbing the latest stock firmware zip from asus, transferring it to my external sd card via adapter and renamed it to MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip. Then go into fastboot (restart with volume up key) and proceed to recovery. It should automatically update your system from there. The only bummer is having to re-configure everything.

i tried it with prerooted as well as the stock rom, it did not work for me. isn't there any way to flash CM12.1 using the fastboot ?

Zenfone 2 failed update, can't flash stock firmware

I accidentally allowed the 2.20.40.183 OTA update, which rendered my phone useless. I tried putting MOFD_UPDATE of 2.20.40.174 on my SD card, but that didn't work.
Here's a few other things I tried:
Recovery menu: Updating phone, then dead droid. No menu appears.
adb sideload: adb didn't recognize my phone.
fastboot flash: Permission denied, or something along those lines. The write fails. Tried to flash system.img but it never did and nothing happened.
adb sideload through temporary CWM: Unauthorized device. Couldn't sideload.
Flashing through temporary CWM and temporary TWRP: Fails early on with Status 7. 2.20.40.174 is older, and this is apparently reason enough to deny me.
Does anyone have an idea about what I can do to fix this? Could I flash Cyanogenmod, then flash stock over that, using temporary CWM/TWRP?
My bootloader is not unlocked.

All necessary to read.
Hope you fix the problem.
Fixed
I managed to fix my phone, but not with the method Mr Gourav so kindly posted. I chose not to use mr_gourav2000's IntelSoC fix because the guide was written in a way that made it very hard to follow, and I was unsure if MOOREFIELD was supposed to flash briefly or stay on the Device Manager. Regardless, I wasn't going to risk bricking my phone beyond help by pushing on without knowing what i was doing.
The key was bypassing Status 7 (or 1), which prevents you from downgrading firmware. If your phone says something like "Installation failed with Status 1" or "Status 7," or you get the "Can't install this package over newer build" error when you attempt to flash a previous firmware, this fix can help you. Funny enough, the fix was posted by the very same person earlier this year:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65995574&postcount=116
First, download the latest full firmware from Asus' support site: https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone_2_ZE551ML/HelpDesk_Download/
Then, open or extract the .zip file, and go to into UL-Z00A-WW-(Firmware.Version.Number)-user.zip\META-INF\com\google\android\ . Select updater-script (no file extension), and open it in a plain text editor like Notepad++.
Remove lines 1-6, beginning with "(!less_than_int" and ending with "getprop("ro.product.device") + "\".");". The result should look like this.
Then, insert the edited updater-script into the .zip file, overwriting the old updater-script. At this point, I should mention that one of the removed lines probably checked your phone's model number to see if it was compatible with the firmware. I sure hope you downloaded the right file for your phone. If not, brick city here you come.
Finally, put the edited .zip into a microSD card, and insert that into your phone. If you want to use the stock recovery to install the firmware, rename the .zip to MOFD-UPDATE.zip and put it in the root of the SD, then restart the phone and let it update. Presumably. I didn't use the stock recovery. I used the temporary ClockworkMod recovery to fix my phone, so I'm not sure if it's that simple. If you're using that temporary CWM, just go to the zip installation menu and apply the zip from external_sd.
If you were going through the same problems I was, your phone should boot into stock, unrooted firmware again. Pat yourself on the back and never do whatever dumb thing you did to get to this point in the first place (like absentmindedly apply an OTA update in the middle of a lecture)!
Once again, thanks to mr_gourav2000 for posting this fix earlier. I may not have understood the IntelSoC fix, but I did understand this one!

If it's the 1st boot it generally will as it is recreating cache, dalvik-cache or ART...
It seems to take forever to clear cache too when using recovery but about a heartbeat when using fastboot.... Just another quirk of the phone...
Thank you much
I gotta say, this got me on the right path. Though my issue was exactly the same the fix was a little different.
I had to use the next patch and that worked. Recovery is working now and I have to manually update, but still have root, so no real big deal.
Thanks again.

You need to flash boot, droidboot and recovery for the build you are using.
I use fastboot to do this but make sure developer settings are enabled and USB debugging is ticked before trying to flash.
To find the img files for the above mentioned, go to Shakalaka's pre-rooted rom thread in Android Developement, you don't need to download the rom if you don't want to but it sure makes rooting easy.
Find the version of Android you need and download boot, droidboot and recovery img files. Flash with fastboot using these commands -
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
***Make sure the right commands are used or it may result in a brick...***

Stuck on team win recovery project please help

I have no idea how to root or anything like that, I bought this oneplus 3 and had a update a week later.. so when I did the software update it took me into teamwin recovery mode and now I don't know how to get back into my phone please help....
Did you buy the phone second hand or did you try to flash TWRP yourself? It shouldn't have TWRP installed by default.
Regardless, you can use TWRP to flash the latest update.
Given that you have TWRP, I'm assuming that you have an unlocked bootloader. Did you notice a warning pop up everytime you reboot your phone before? It should say something along the lines of "your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted". If not, you'll have to unlock it (it wipes your phone in the process).
If the bootloader is unlocked, you can simply download and flash the latest zip for OOS 4.0.3 in TWRP. This will update you phone and replace TWRP with the stock recovery (so you don't run into this problem again in the future when installing an OTA). If you don't intend to modify your phone in any way, then this is all you need to do, your phone should be functional.
There are plenty of threads with detailed guides on how to do all of this.
I'm also stuck on TWRP after stupidly downloading the latest OTA and I don't know what to do!
Phone won't boot normal, just goes off.
Situation:
- Bootloader, Fastboot and TWRP wil load.
- Device seen by windows
- Zip install in TWRP gets stuck at 'patching zip unconditiontally'
- Another zip flashes, but gets stuck at the end, no reboot option (manually but that's not the way)
Can someone please point me in the right direction? I don't care if I lose data, just want my phone back!

Simple, check the OnePlus D/L sites for this one http://oxygenos.oneplus.net.s3.amazonaws.com/recovery_op3.img and flash it by TWRP or fastboot to RECOVERY. Boot once with the official Recovery and all ist fine again.
This is issue of using a faulty twrp so for that when ur phone us booting up go to fastboot and flash twrp 3.0.4-1 and everything will work

Similar Problem here:
just wanted to flash latest OOS 4.0.3, so I flashed back stock recovery with flashify and rebooted into recovery mode to flash the already downloaded OOS 4.0.3. zip. That's when it began to go poop! After rebooting it just went dark with no Chance to power it on again! No dice with power button, Volume up/down + power button, nothing! Not even the LED's are blinking when plugged in. So this one seems to be basically dead!
I got it once booting again after randomly pushing the buttons (after x minutes!?), but everytime I reboot the phone it just shuts off without beeing able to power it on again. At the Moment it's dead!
Any ideas what might happened? If I get it on again, should I immediately reset it to factory Settings?
I am kinda lost here! Any help/ideas would be much appreciated!
Flashify? Never used it and never trusted apps which flash stuff on a running system. Use fastboot and reflash the recovery partition. Link to recovery is in my former post.
fastboot flash recovery PATHTOIMGFILE
Thank you for your advice! Still a lot to learn! Got it up again, will try as you suggested!
It appeared that my stock recovery file was corrupted , but all is fine again! Thank you very much!

I may have been the person you traded with to get the OnePlus 3, but I took the phone back and after 5 hours I got it up and running.
The phone would boot to TWRP, but even after wiping the entire system and dragging a ROM zip to the internal storage, reinstalling did nothing. It just kept booting back to recovery.
The solution entailed the following.
Download stock recovery IMG. Flashed through TWRP. Rebooted recovery and now was back to stock recovery.
Download the official OxygenOS ROM zip from the OnePlus website and changed the name to update.zip
Next I downloaded Android studio for access to ADB. I had never used ADB before, but I knew this was needed to push a file to the phone.
Needless to say, ADB kept freezing my computer when I would type in the commands to side load.
I deleted Android studio and installed a minimal ADB/Fastboot I found online. I opened my command prompt, typed the command for sideloading, and immediately got my installation starting. It took about 10 minutes to fully install. When it was finished, I rebooted and had a fully functioning OnePlus 3
