Facebook and Messenger app is using most of my battery, is there any alternative Facebook/Messenger app that has the same layout and notifications?

"Friendly for facebook" on playstore is exactly what you are searching.
Battery friendlier than official and messenger + fb in one app.
Layout nearly the same, notifications also work.
You can also set update interval to make it even more battery friendly.
Cheers

you can use the patched Facebook app where the messenger is integrated and doesn't need a separate messenger app. I myself am using that since some time.
Swipe for Facebook pro is also a great alternative as it has all the features with different ui and great theme colors

Hey Guys and Gals of XDA,
Kinda wondering if anyone has come across an app that will change how android handles when we get a new gmail email.
Currently when you get a new email you get a notification in the drawer.. Im looking for an app to change that. I dont want any notification in the drawer. I just want an unread email number to show up on the icon on the home screen. SMS message app does this when you get a new message.
If anyone has any known apps or wants to develop one id be full game..
Thanks
That is not possible for the time being. It used to be, but then GMail removed the API that allowed this (for security reasons)
http://www.launcherpro.com/2011/07/09/upcoming-changes-to-gmail-app/
We will have to wait until GMail offers this through some other type of functionality.

Use the plug in for Go Launcher (Go Notifications), of course, implies that you have to use Go Launcher, but it's a very good launcher.

The same problem I mention affects Go Launcher too (as well as any other apps that used to provide unread count)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.golauncherex.notification&hl=en
-------Important--------
The Gmail app has updated to new version and the API we uses to access your Gmail in our Notification app is being removed in Gmail.
We will continue support Gmail notification if your Gmail app doesn’t update to the newest version. But once your Gmail is updated, the notification option will be removed from GO Launcher.

So, this is a gmail thing, don't upgrade to the latest version or downgrade to the previous version. I haven't upgraded to the latest version, my notifications show up.
Hi,
What do you use to manage task and to do list?
I am lookig for an app that have these:
- good matching with ICS user interface
- support Google Calendar
Previously, I used Astrid, but this app is ugly.
I use any.do from the marketplace

The app is very nice looking (modern and sleek) and works great. I would also recommend it.
The only thing i wish is that it would sync with exchange if desired. It will sync with your gmail if you wish.
I tried Any.Do, it is nice looking.
But the widget is not that good.
It should be ok though, because I will use Pure Calendar Widget.
The only problem, Any.Do is not yet supported.

tasks
Gtasks by dato is excellent for large task lists, and mutiple (much better than any.do) as you can side swype to access lists.
I have tried just about everything, keep coming back to gtasks as it is solid, syncs perfectly well to google tasks. It also is supported in widget form by agenda widget which is incredible. the gtatsks one is average but combined with agenda widget, it is unbeatable. So if you syncing with google tasks, this is it, if it is stand alone then astrid, if it is small lists then any.do is pretty.
edit: Having re read OP, gtasks doesnt well sync with calendar..... sry
I'm using Due Today.
Only drawback, not much sync option at time.
I have been using Taskos. Can't fault it and it has all of the functionality that the OP mentions. It also has a decent widget as well...
Astrid
I use "Yata todo list" from the market.
the widget is cool.
Astrid paid version, 4 x3, transparent.
I would go with astird combined with astrid power pack
From all the reading I have done, it appears that the unread count not showing on the gmail app is a known issue? When I get text messages, I see a "1" overlay on my messages icon. But not for Gmail. I did see an app in the play store that is "supposed" to fix this. Or would I be better served by flashing a custom rom. It seems pretty absurd to me that an OS made by google doesnt have overlays for Gmail.

I think that's a TouchWiz feature. And thats why it only works with the messages and built-in email app, etc.
I use Nova Prime, I think the pay version of most launchers includes that. But, I never found a free launcher that did it.

Nova might do it, if you install the tesla unread plugin, but I'm not sure. Picked up Prime when they had the $.25 sale and have loved it
Tried out nova prime with tesla unread plugin and it works decent. Without some app I don't know of a way to get the unread number on not stock apps.

When I have new emails in my Gmail account, there's a little icon in the notification bar. Ans when I swipe it down, it even shows me the titles of the emails. I know this doesn't solve ur problem, but it works for me.

I have the same thing. The notification bar just seems very crowded to me and I end up overlooking the notification. More of a personal problem than anything but would be a nice feature to have standard.

Hey Guys
Just wanted to know is there anyway to get the little bubble on top of the Gmail app? Similar to the Email app, it has a number displayed above it which tells you how many emails you have before going into the app, but Gmail lacks that for some reason.
Any ideas?
i'm using Tesla Unread, but it requires Nova Launcher or WidgetLocker.

Anyone have any issues with Nova? I tried installing it but every time I clicked on my gmail widget, the phone would revert back to touchwiz.
Is there anything more to it then search and install?
Just got my watch today. Love it so far. Have a question though. When I Swipe left to go to apps, I can scroll and see hangouts and look though all text conversations. BUT I can not see default google messenger and can't see whatsapp on the app list.
I am getting notifications but I can't open the actual apps to see history conversations. What am I missing?
That's correct. Apps like Whatsapp, Facebook messenger or Google messenger do not provide an app which you can start from the app drawer on the watch. They only open on notification and provide limited possibilities for interaction.
There is a 3rd party app that will provide more possibilities though.

I would swear I saw what's app and google messenger on the app list while watching tons of YouTube videos.
So, I can't rely start a whatsapp conversation then. Just reply? I don't think I want to install a 3rd party app. Just wondering.

Well you can in fact start a whatsapp conversation by voice command "Ok google send whatsapp message to ....". I don't use the google messenger, but I guess it will work as well by voice command.
But there is no app icon available to start a conversation (yet).
