As the title says, is the moto z play from koodo bootloader unlockable? About to pick one up and want to make sure it is unlockable, from what I've been reading only Verizon is locked down, if I cant unlock etc. Won't pick it up. Thanks if this has been asked a million times :/
Edit never mind don't carry it any more lol

I've just recently moved to xperia play and this whole change is confusing. There are new things to take note of, namely bootloader unlocking and fastboot.
I wanna ask if I could unlock my bootloader. I'm on 3.0.A.., and my Play is gsm, sold in singapore. There is no "root test" in service configuration.
First, welcome to the Xperia PLAY section. Second, if you do a search you will find countless threads in the PLAY section that detail what is required to unlock your bootloader and how. Mine was unlocked last summer but done in a way that is no longer available. Look up someone names (someone correct me if I get the spelling wrong) alejandrissimo. He will unlock your phone for $25 (dont know what that comes to in your countries currency) and by unlock I mean unlock it so that you have an unlocked bootloader and an unlocked sim, so you can use the phone with other carriers sim cards. The reason for the fee is not because he makes money off it, its because the software used to unlock bootloaders that alejandrissimo uses charges a fee of $25 to unlock aspects of the softwares use per each time. So he is not making any money off it but simply using it to unlock your phone and open it up to a new world of modding.
If you have more questions just a friendly reminder to do some searching in the Xperia PLAY section here first. You should find all the answers you need. Good luck and welcome to the XDA Xperia PLAY
Hello.
Just bought a refurbished moto z play verizon phone through amazon.
upon unlocking the bootloader, I get this response from motorola: Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.
Is this because it was used or refurbished?
I tried the same process in my Linux computer and win10. same outcome.
usb dev and oem bootloader on phone is checked prior to fastboot screen
** I have not updated any software on the phone.
so i see all this wonderful development is for other variations of the moto z play. basically, damn verizon locks everything and i will return this phone. to bad.

Yeah thats verizon
I was considering a Play, only if I could unlock and root. So should I look for a unlocked one to start with? Why could you not unlock yours?

He's got a Verizon branded one. It's bootloader is not unlockable due to Verizon specifically requesting Moto exclude VZW branded devices from the unlock program.
If you want to unlock/root/ROM, buy an unlocked model. But if you need to use VZW network, you may be out of luck. Check wireless bands supported by the device against the bands you need to access on your network of choice. Unlocked version is a GSM device.
I finally found that this is the one I need to buy. "moto z play xt1635-02"

haha, because you can lock the bootloader again if you have that one?
Ah crap, even that unlocked model will not work on Verizon. Looks like my option is to buy a Moto Droid Z2 Play.

I don't think any modern Verizon phone will bootloader unlock.
Sucks because back in the day I bought a moto x dev... To me, that was the right customer model.

That one won't be unlockable or rootable either, to my knowledge.
Not even the Z2 Play XT1710-01? Or is it just a unlocked sim?

All of Verizon's devices are sim unlocked I believe, but all as far as I know are NOT bootloader unlockable.
Read in the Droid z2 play forum before buying to confirm. If there's a root method, it should be at the top of the dev forums
Edit: took a quick look over at z2 play forums. Not a lot of action. Unlock/root instructions require unlocking bootloader via Moto site. A comment down thread indicates VZW version not rootable. That is consistent with VZW past policy. Unless you're in possession of specific info on how to unlock and root Verizon version, I'd assume it's locked. Given the amount of development over there so far and general consensus that the z2 play is at best a side grade from original Z play, I'd definitely avoid VZW/Droid version if you ever want root.
I'm not sure which sub model is which over there, -01 is Verizon on original Z play
Looking at getting a Moto Z2 Force directly from Motorola since it's on sale at the moment for Mother's Day for $500
https://www.motorola.com/us/products/moto-z-force-edition-gen-2/ecomm
But when I go to select one I am asked to choose a carrier. And a chat session with Moto support says the phones are carrier locked.
That seems very strange for a phone bought with no plan. Is it hard to unlock?
Thanks
T-Mo one can just be unlocked with an active SIM, no other need for it. Other carriers, I don't know about.
If you get the TMobile version from Moto bear in mind you will have to go through a bunch of hoops to get it unlocked after you qualify. The IMEI never makes it to TMobile for them to unlock so you have to do a stupid appeals process over Facebook of all things. It adds almost and extra month to the unlock time.
I am currently looking at Verizon for phones (needs to be Verizon based in my area as the GSM signals are weak to non-existent, whereas the CDMA signal is usable). I am looking at phones through the website and see they have a G7 Play (SKU# MOTXT19523) for free, and I want to do my research before placing an order to see if the bootloader of this phone is unlockable. I look at the moto bootloader support page and see that G7 Play's should be unlockable, but I can also remember getting burned on other moto devices because of it being a verizon device and they don't seem to like unlocking the bootloaders to their devices. If that is the case, would I be able to unlock the bootloader of any of the devices that verizon is trying to sell me? I appreciate any assistance that can be provided, and I am sorry if this is a repeat, but I could not come up with anything that I could tell was the right answer... and I don't want to waste time and money if I don't have to. Thank you.

Carrier exclusive models (ex. Verizon, AT&T, Tracfone) are almost never unlockable.
Bootloader unlock codes are not available for Amazon Branded devices

So my Moto E5 Supra started smoking and almost caught on fire last week. I'd had it about a year but couldnt stand how Cricket had the bootloader locked and I couldnt root it. I decided i'd not get one of their phones and order one from Ebay.
The seller had it listed as an Unlocked G7 Power ATT/Cricket XT-1955 so I looked it up and made sure it would be rootable. It gets here, and its the XT1955-6 Verizon version. Calling works but has a constant notification of it not being a verizon sim which I could live with. But then I get on here and see it has a locked bootloader...
What can I do? I contacted the seller and he will allow me to return it. I know there arent magical workarounds for phones with locked bootloaders from going through this with the E5 Supra. I really like the phone though, so im going to order another one today from somewhere online and send this one back tomorrow. Which version is guaranteed to come with an unlocked bootloader and preferably work with GSM? I saw that 1955-5 could be flashed onto the international version and its actually cheaper and comes with more ram and space I believe. Not sure on battery size.
I want to make absolutely certain that what I get can be rooted, primarily because of how much im paying for mobile hotspot data and I enjoy the freedom. Are the international versions bootloader unlocked? I dont mind having to flash things on it or whatever in order to make it all work smoothly. Is the G7 International the way to go?
Thanks in advance!

Has the big battery if it the power
I am seeing a lot of blankflash posts and bricked devices posts. I really do like the Motos for the price, but I may just go an entirely different route. Im wondering are the International G7s bootloader unlocked? As far as the Power goes, the 1955-5 comes with an unlocked bootloader correct?

The bootloader never come unlocked u have to do it certain carryors slow them to be unlocked some carryors won't allow them .if u get one that is international one most likely u can unlock boot loader and as for the brick ones most times they did something wrong I had same feeling so I got off a chat on tellagram and people there explained things to me and got an complete guied on how to do so do not brick it
Thank you for clarifying it but I didn't mean to say come unlocked. I realize you have to go through Motorola. I just don't want to go through this same issue again. Cricket had the G7 Power but they don't allow bootloader's to be unlocked on anything of theirs.
But as far as variants that are unlockable through Motorola, do you happen to know which ones have bootloader's that are 100% able to be unlocked?
I know this doesn't matter but my OEM unlock switch I am actually able to toggle. Was on the phone with Verizon and each rep moved me up the ladder until finally they tried to tell me Motorola is the one who locks them. That may be true, but at Verizon's request I would imagine ? Lol
One other thing. I've been reading and reading on here and other places. There was a guy on here who said he was going to flash the 1955-5 firmware on his 1955-6. I'm not sure if it was exactly those words, but he seemed to think some firmware could allow it. But from what I remember, the bootloader comes before all of that and are encrypted and I feel like flashing any different firmware even if stock and signed or whatever would brick his device ..

Thumb of the rule, any branded Motorola phone won't have unlocked bootloader.
Read here

if you're buying a new phone then make sure its IMEI works on Verizon first
Here
https://www.verizon.com/onedp/byod?kbid=121565#/
Edit: Once you do find that out, then make sure it's not a branded phone for Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, MetroPcs. Normally those phones have logo's on the back and app installed on them if it's not then you might get lucky to have one which you can unlock the bootloader and still works with Verizon.
If your phone is branded then best bet to resale it and get a phone mentioned above, there is no work around to it.
