Hello all
Did any of you managed to get an usb flashdrive working on TWRP?
I tried two different devices, and none of them worked on recovery as OTG drive.
However... all my computers and MIUI itself, detected the usb flash drives and performed data copy with no issues.
i tried to change the filesystem on the drives to exFAT, FAT32 (default) and NTFS... no luck. Rebooting to twrp with the flashdrive connected or disconnected doesn't make a difference either...
Providing any help, idea, tip or usb make/model you may tried before with success is appreciated.
thanks and regards

I have no problem with USB OTG in TWRP.
Kingston 64 GB USB flash drive formatted to FAT32 with generic OTG adapter...
Can you provide recovery.log in order to analyze the problem?
Hi - thanks for the answer.
I will be glad to provide recovery.log - if you can help me out with it.
I checked over the file system and didn't find it. Thanks

When you are in TWRP, plug the USB, try to mount it (it will fail, yes, but this is important). And then go to Advanced menu -> tap the Copy Log button. Your log will be on /sdcard/
You can post it here, or on sites like pastebin.com
funny thing... after a third format... it started to work. for the very same reason it didn't work before...
anyway. thanks for your time!

Hello everybody,
I have the following problem appearing recently:
Whenever I connect a USB stick through OTG cable to my Galaxy Note II I always receive the message “USB Storage damaged. It may need reformatting” in the status bar, no matter which stick or other mass storage device I'm using. On my PC, the files are perfectly visible.
I didn't tamper nor change anything on my phone, it's been running the original Samsung ROM, rooted but otherwise unchanged, for the last six months.
Could any of you help? I explored several threads with reference to the same error message on other Android devices here and in other Android forums but none of them matched this problem.
Thanks in advance!
Sarmate
Hi,
Have you tried smaller sized USB sticks?
Because my 1 terabyte SeaGate hard drive works but turns off because it needs more power.

Yes, I tried with a 1GB and a 4GB sticks that worked quite well on OTG last week.
Both these sticks still work well on my PC.

It wasn't.
I did tick it but it doesn't change anything in the behaviour.
(BTW, thank you for taking the trouble to help me!)

No problem helping :highfive:
Well, I had no problems with USB OTG yet (except the 1 tb)
I suggest you factory reset or change the OTG cable.

I tried the cable as well...
Factory reset is a bit radical.
Does anyone else have an idea?
solution
Hi I had the same problem. I found the solution myself. Android doesn't support NTFS format actually. Format the USB with fat32. There u go. :good:
Use NTFS mounter app.....it needs root....
The problem is caused by kernel and USB drivers. Depends what kind of ROM is installed on your phone.
Some of the ROMs dont recognize big variety of card readers. Now I am using some cheap china phone,
so i had hard time to find the correct SD card reader.
Before, I was using Paranoid Android on Nexus 7, I didnt have problem with mounting any size of card, any kind of card reader.
Try different card readers , play around, you will fing the way.
:good:
I have the same problem but both the cable and drives work fine on my Verizon G3 but not on my T-Mobile G3 running 6.0.1 mm based Turbo ROM.
My S5 suddenly refused my Usb Otg drive for no reason. It was working fine. It also corrupts the drive so BE VERT CAREFUL before connecting any mass storage to Android. Why is that?
I installed the one click root+Flash+busybox+usb fix and everything successfully installed but now when I connect any flash drive or external harddrive they are not seen. I formatted both to fat32 and they are not seen. Anyone have any tips on fixing this?
I never managed to, clicking on it does absolutely nothing.
It's quite annoying because i cannot copy stuff to my tab from recovery, i have to use ADB command line instead..
Is it just me?
Edit:
Latest TWRP ofc, 2.6.3.1
Anyone? How do you copy stuff in recovery without ADB?
For accessing files on my USB I use Stickmount and can copy files with my File Manager. I can also flash Roms that are on the USB with TWRP..

But you are talking about app , when you are booted in Android correct?
I'm talking about moving stuff to sdcard in Recovery. e.g. connecting it with my PC in recovery using USB cable wont show me any storage in "my computer", and mounting "USB-OTG" does nothing.
I have no problems copying stuff when i'm booted in Android, storage is properly detected/mounted.
But in recovery i have to use ADB to copy anything to my tab, is there solution for this?

You can't mount to your computer in TWRP. USB-OTG is something different.
Yes I do it all the time. I only have the 8GB so I use USB Flash Drives, or microsd cards through an adapter all the time. I have 3 cheap USB OTG adapters I got from eBay. And one Meenova SDCard adapter. But I use micro SD's with a USB adapter with the USB OTG cables as well.
I pretty much always do this when I backup in TWRP, or am Flashing a rom.
There is two ways to do it really.
One. Go to the advanced and select Mount. On that page I just unselected everything and select USB OTG. Then you don't have to do anything else. Its just like when u select the radiobox it is marked as being mounted, you can then access any files on it using whatever means depending on the circumstances, it will be located at the root of your device, at the bottom there is a dir named 'USB-OTG' select that and your files should be in there.
The second way, go to mount, but below all the options there is a box that says 'Storage 1xxxxx mb'. Etc. Just tap that box and it let's you select either USB-OTG or the devices storage. I use this option to make a band backup so it just defaults to a TWRP/Backups/ dir on the drive. Instead of having to fiddle with all that backing up to get to a custom dir.
It should work. There is no indication that it is mounted if that's what you mean, unless there is an led on your drive of coarse.
Just head to the root dir and USB OTG should be there and you be all good.
But yeah your computer is not a hard drive so you can't just mount it like one. You could technically if you took your hard drive out and connected it with adapters, but a Flash Drive is like $5 these days for one that can hold even the biggest of files you would ever need in recovery.

All you have to do is, Re-Format the MicroSD card in your computer (I use windows 7) using SDFormatter v4.0. Click the "Options" button and for "Format Type", Select "Quick" and for "Format Size Adjustment" Select "On". Thats it! And it will Surely be recognized in TWRP (i use v2.7). Hope that helps.
I have exactly the same problem. I have flashed a number of ROMs from a USB stick via an OTG adapter.
But now the tablet has stopped recognizing the USB OTG. As the tablet (a Nexus 7 Grouper) has no SD slot, there is no way of transferring the ROM files. So I'm stuck.

I never got TWRP to see the OTG if I inserted it whilst the tablet was running. Only when I booted with OTG did it see it.
If you are using an adapter, say USB-A to USB-micro then some don't work well.
twrp otg
Thanks for the reply
I just use a small otg adapter, usb c male on one side and regular usb female on other side.

I'm having this same damn problem. TWRP really sucks ass on mounting USB-OTG... sometimes it works and most of the time it doesn't... I don't know what to do either when I can't load any ROMS on there!!
Hello friends,
I have a question can I make a backup directly to my USB stick via our recovery? I can´t get my usb 3.0 get recognized in TWRP. I´m using this version http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-c/development/twrp-3-0-2-0v16-t3400503 but OTG doesn´t works for me.
-Maybe can I flash again through TWRP the latest update.zip that it´s 3.0.2-21 trying to solve my issue with OTG?
-Also OTG what formats supports? NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT?
Thanks in advance.

For me OTG is working fine, pls update to 3.0.2-21 and test again.
Does your USB stick work in normal Android system without problems ?
I had one USB stick which was not "fully" detected by the Pixel C - but with the "correct" USB stick it's working fine.
Using only FAT32 for backups .. need to test other filesystems .. the kernel is the same as for the Android system.

Hello,
First of all thanks for your answer, I use a usb 3.0 128 gb (this one: https://www.sandisk.com/home/usb-flash/ultra-fit-usb ) without any kind of problems, so I can say that it´s fully functional on Pixel C. Probably the problem is that I use all my pendrives in NTFS or exFAT.
I try with FAT32 and post results here.
I can´t do the test with my principal usb because I can´t translate the content to a PC atm. But I try with a usb 2.0 Lexar 8 gb in FAT32 (this one http://www.lexar.com/flash-drives/lexar-jumpdrive-s70-usb-flash-drive?category=207) and I made the backup without problems, so really thanks for your help.
You see FAT32 is working .. but I have checked the TWRP config as well.
ExFAT will be compiled and is part of the current TWRP release.
But the kernel seems not to support ExFAT - need to check this for future TWRP releases.
There are also some patent issues as it looks like .. we will see.
NTFS-3g is not included in TWRP release .. needs to be checked as well.
For now, pls go for FAT32 !

Sure I start to use a single usb stick formatted i nFAT32 just for backups.
Really thanks again mate!!!
Maybe Im not describing it right but no phone for over a month.. No matter what computer or version of windows 10 my phone is not recognized because I deleted all system and it comes up with error device descripor failed. I can get into fastboot and twrp recovery so thats good . but memory stick doesnt show on there no matter what format i use blah blah blah.. The unbrick tool doesnt recognize phone either probably because of the error and no usb debugging so Im willing to pay for someone to get this back up if nobody has any answer just leave whee to send and how much if no one knows of any way to get a rom on here:crying:..thanks
When you say memory stick doesn't show are you referring to OTG? If not try a USB C memory stick, or try a different one, maybe another USB C stick would work.

My USB A/C Sandisk is formatted as exFat and detected fine in codeworkx's latest TWRP. You deleting the System partition should not affect your device's ability to detect a USB. Just load OOS/your ROM onto your USB, press "Mount" on the TWRP main menu, press "Select Storage" then "USB Storage" then "OK".
Backup your /data partition to your USB using backup option in TWRP if you had important data there that isn't stored anywhere else.
You can now just try dirty flashing OOS/ROM in the install option, but I would probably just format the bloody thing first.
Good Luck
well tried exFat format on it doesnt recognize it in recovery twrp so is there a way to access it by going into fastboot cmd if there is such a thing in android world
