bootanimation.zip file not able to be renamed - LineageOS Questions & Answers

I am trying to hanger my boot animation but the bootanimation.zip file can't be renamed. I am using fx file explorer with root access.

Because '/system' is mounted read-only by default and not even root can write to a read-only filesystem.

UOT KItchen

I recently put together a battery icon and boot loader in UOT Kitchen, if I install the file I edited form zip will it format anything or just change what ever I edited?
I'm running RMK Gingerbreadsense
It should just change what you've edited, but make a backup just in case.
If you flash the .zip it won't modify any other files that are not inside the .zip

speaking of this kitchen, i was trying to change my boot animation and found a 'bootanimation.zip' file on my phone....
although kitchen is asking me to upload a system.ui file or some com.htc.resources.apk file
the system file is on my phone but keeps saying it's "read only" and won't let me do anything with it.. and the other file doesn't seem to exist.
that and "kitchen's list" doesn't even show the rom i'm using anyway.
what gives?
[EDIT] actually any of the .apk files in the system/apps folder say "read only".
[EDIT 2] - i found the com.htc.resources.apk file, but i can't get around the 'ready only' on the systemui.apk file - is there a way to remove read only status?
[EDIT 3] - damn terminal won't even allow it: "Unable to chmod /system: Read-only file system"
I have a copy of all the roms I use so I just extracted RMK Gingersense and got the files, put on desktop, then uploaded them with out a problem. I haven't installled customized files though lol I don't want to brick or ruin anything. Might just end up doing it though.
To the person with the read-only problems: were you using root explorer when you were browsing those system folders? You have to mount R/W, there's a button on the upper right.

Root explorer

Hey guys.
What root file managers do you use?
I've tried both ecs and yaffs and both fail to do what I want them to, I've been trying to chmod system/app to 777 so that I can copy stuff into that folder.

You need to remount the system with read-write access, then you'll be able to put apps in it.
And to answer the question, I swear by ES File Explorer. You can set hem to automaticly mount /system as read/write, so no problems with editing system files.

Boot Animation options for S-ON

Is there any way to modify the boot animations for S-ON devices? Is it possible to make a zip file like the SuperClean from ARHD we can execute with ClockworkMod?
Boot animation or splash.img?

Derp. I figured this out myself. I used ES File Explorer mount /system R/W and was able to copy the file into /system/media. That didn't work for some reason, but putting the file in /data/local did.

[Q] Unable to Edit System Files Using any File Explorer

So this is a problem I've had basically since day one with my Nexus 7. No matter what file explorer I use, I can not edit anything in the root directories. Unable to save build.prop edits for example. I am assuming it is a permission thing but I have no idea exactly what I am doing wrong or how to fix it. Any help is appreciated.

Are you rooted? If you are - check to see if you are in read only mode in your file manager(s)
Besides requiring root, apps like ES File Explorer need to have root access turned on. Root Explorer needs a directory mounted as R/W.
Best practice, anyway, is to copy a file (especially build.prop) to a regular directory under /sdcard, edit it there, rename the original, then copy back the modified file.
I managed to figure it out. Was using cm file explorer and root browser. Got root browser working by changing permissions on the system folder.
I always copy files into the internal storage before editing. Thanks for the replies.

Cannot Mount System/etc

Hi.
I was trying to edit my hosts file for adblocking and it seems that i cannot mount the folder for r/w.
I have tried to use adaway and it fails to apply the hosts file.
So i tried to do it manually using FX file explorer and i cannot mount system/etc.
Any help would be good
