Can I root update from 3.2.8 to 4.0.3? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
When nougat first came out, there was this huge hassle to update from a rooted op3. You needed a modified twrp etc etc. Is this still the way to update? Or can I just flash it through normal twrp? (And i suppose I have to flash supersu as well?)
Thanks!

The 'normal" TWRP is not fully compatible with Nougat and OP3. So you still need the modified ones. And SuperSU as well.

Okay, thanks for the quick answer!

Any chance to post links to the modified TWRP and SuperSU? I can't seem to find those...

Here is TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/on.../recovery-official-twrp-oneplus-3-3t-t3543391
For SuperSU, I am using 2.79: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/chainf...79-release/supersu-2-79-android-apk-download/ If you need other versions, search with Google.

Root and encryption

Is there any way to root and keep encryption?
Yes. Just unlock your bootloader, flash the latest version of TWRP (the one that works with the MHC19J March Update: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+JoshuaLynch50036/posts/ZcNqBDvNmo7), download the latest version of SuperSU (2.68: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133) and flash it. That's it. The reason people decrypted before was because they weren't patient enough to wait for a version of TWRP that would work with encryption.

Questions about the OP3

I got my OP3 1-2 weeks . before i had a S4 (rooted). I'm really happy with this phone but i got some questions and problems.
1. When i video call via skype the camera will freeze in 50sec. when I switch the camera to the back and front it's fixed for 50 sec again and same thing happening again....
2. Rooting the OP3 is it safe to do ? And does someone got a guide for it ? I saw allot off them but I don't know which one works for Oxygen 3.2.1. I got some rooting experience with the S4 but rooting op3 is kinda different.
3. When i got a rooted op3 without a custom rom. Do i still get updates via System updates in the settings ?
Sorry for my bad English and thanks for reading.
1. Don't know
2. Yes, https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...nlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-nandroid-efs
3. No after rooting you won't get updates

Via TWRP both.
Here you can find the systemless SuperSU https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/guide-oneplus-3-how-to-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-nandroid-efs-backup-and-more.448149/

Seriously? I've been told several times installing a custom recovery and OTA is a no go...
But thanks, I'm still stock but I don't know for how long. I'm still a flashaholic inside.

You are right that you will get a prompt for upcoming OTA updates.
But they won't install because your kernel and system are not stock.
My device is also rooted systemless and I can confirm that you will get an error inside TWRP
when trying to install the OTA patches.
When rooted, regardless which way, it is always necessary to flash the full rom zip.
So in the end @J_Dutch was right to say that you won't get updates
because you will always have to manually flash the full rom.
On the other hand, when somebody only uses TWRP (for backups for example) without modifying the system and kernel at all,
OTAs will work just fine.

[Q] Can I download last firmware from OP3 page and install using TWRP?

Hi guys, I didn't find any concrete answer here so posting this.
I have OOS 3.2.7
I am rooted
I have TWRP recovery
System wants me to install OTA, before doing anything I checked the internet and found it will not work.
What is the best to install the OTA?
Can i do with FlashFire?
Do I need to install the entire ROM downloaded from OP3 official site and re-flash SuperSU? (http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-3/oneplus_3_oxygenos_3.2.8/)
Can I install the OTA with TWRP???
I need a clear answer cause for some reason the community is not aligned on how to do this and I dont want to brick my phone.
Thank you in advance.

Get the modified twrp by eng.stk. you can flash the official rom with it. Official twrp will be replaced by stock recovery.
Flashfire didnt work when i treid to install ota, you'll have to download the full rom and either dirty flash or clean flash it. And yes, you have to reflash supersu everytime you reflash a rom.

Rooting original 7.1.1 on Moto Z Play

Hi at all,
I own this device for two months now and I have read a lot about rooting and flashing. It seems to be quite difficult compared to my former Samsung and Xiaomi devices...
To avoid any kind of bricking my phone I wanted to ask if there's a way to root it. I (still) have a locked bootloader and I installed the latest update to 7.1.1 with 1st July security patch.
Is there any safe way to root and install TWRP (and afterwards some ROMs of course)?
Thank you. :fingers-crossed:
I have root on my moto z play with stock 7.1.1. if you don't downgrade you don't get bricked
To unlock and install twrp :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/guide-root-xposed-flashing-stock-rom-t3529637
And to root use this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/how-to-safetynet-7-1-1-update-stock-rom-t3669086
To root is better with magisk ( second link)because don't break SafetyNet and the link is a tutorial made by me so if have any questions you can ask in the thread.

If you are in 7.1.1, unlock your bootloader, download TWRP of @Alberto97 version 3.1.1-0(https://dc4.androidfilehost.com/dl/...673368273298955814/twrp-3.1.1-0-addison.img), flash it, download this kernel( https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i8PfTQ1e-WQkZ5-zD52HzWO3LZ5luaq_/view?usp=drivesdk) and the attached Magisk.zip.
Now, after you flashed the TWRP through Fastaboot, enter into recovery mode, select INSTALL, select the kernel and swipe to flash it. Then go back, select the Magisk.zip file to flash and swipe to flash it. After you do it, just reboot you device and check if the Magisk Manager app is installed, if it is, then open it, click on "check safety net", tap OK and wait until it tests the root hiding, if it says everything is okay, then everything is okay.
Congratulations, you are rooted now with Magisk and the Hiding Feature, you can play Pokemon go as well and the same for Snapchat and that stuffs that blocks rooted users from using their apps.

Thanks for your response!
I've read that flashing a kernel when you're in 7.1.1 might cause problems. Did you try this steps being in 7.1.1 or they're just general steps?
In case you were in 7.1.1, did you install xposed after those steps?
Sorry if I ask many questions, but I want to be sure that I'll not brick my phone

no problem dude, i understand your concern, i'm just like this. Actually I was asking for help until last night and got all the answers.
flashing a kernel won't cause any problem since you do not flash any kernel but for your android version. The link i shared with you is a @logotoy73 kernel, he updated it last night and i used it. It's working properly and with no issues.
Today i've tried to install xposed, but due to the forced encryption in 7.1.1 it wasn't possible, even trying with the systemless xposed(magisk feature), maybe later i'll try again then i give you a feedback.
In magisk there are some xposed modules to be able to use it in nougat, but it caused me a bootloop.
If you follow exactly what i've said, you will be rooted in 7.1.1 in a few minutes!
Any problem you have, pm me so i could help you haha

I think creating a new post won't be necessary because kernel is already in @tomparr post, but in the last page of it, the twrp you cam download from Alberto's post, and magisk from the official thread(it's actually one of the most famous threads for now hahaha), but maybe if someone else have any issue with 7.1.1 i can create the post!
Edit. If i plan to try xposed again I tell you!
I have systemless xposed running on 7.1.1 with my kernel. After installing module xposed via twrp if a long start, helps reboot.

Only Magisk module. Normal XPosed would modify /system which would brick your device. And I don't know if that could be fixed

On the first site there is a tutorial linked, just follow it. Basically get rid of supersu first. Then the tutorial probably says that you have to install a custom kernel in order to just Magisk modules because the stock one is faulty. If you ask me that's shooting with guns on pidgins. The easiest way is to get the Magisk module F2FS loopback bug workaround. Google for it. When you have it and latest Magisk zip, go to TWRP, flash Magisk and the module, then reboot. Works perfectly, though you shouldn't ever wipe or format /cache because that's where Magisk is installed now, you'd loose it.

TWRP and Root on Oxygen OS 5.0.1 (Oreo)

Hello people!
I have recently bought this phone and I'm now trying to flash TWRP and root it. Sadly (since it's a fairly recent build I guess?) I haven't found any tutorial to do so, and I have only managed to unlock the bootloader by now... Do you guys have any idea?
Thanks in advance!
There's no need for a new guide for Oreo, the procedure is the same for all system versions. You can follow the old guides, just don't use provided links if they're not updated but find new files yourself.

Look at any other guide as the previous comment said just use updated files for your device.
The short answer for you is to read up on 'custom recovery'.

If you are on Oreo, you have to flash Magisk once you boot into recovery 1st time.

I'm not sure about the recovery version and it's not even TWRP. I just followed the steps that was given in some website.
Magisk v16
Downloaded magisk. Tried flashing it. Failed.
Maybe I should just try another recovery i.e. TWRP but does recovery of different developer matter?

Recovery does matter. If you are not on TWRP, are you on stock recovery? Then how did you flash Magisk?
Flash eng.stk's TWRP then reboot into TWRP and flash Magisk and then reboot to system.
