I have a Nexus 5X 32GB not too old.. but upgrded to an LG V20.
How do I wipe the Nexus 5X clean and over write the data a few times so there's less chance of someone recovering my old data?
There is no need to overwrite data a few times (it's not like a hard drive), just encrypt your data in settings and then wipe.
Be sure to remove your Google accounts first. Otherwise the device cannot be reactivated without first inputting one of the Google accounts on the device prior to wipe.

My fiancè has a samsung google galaxy nexus, I am unsure what I am looking at (and correct for this phone type) when I search ROMs etc given the name given is stated for galaxy nexus, nexus, google nexus.
I assume I am posting on the correct forum for 'samsung galaxy google nexus' therefore my q is this:
I rooted the phone using Nexus toolkit (I guess this is generic for all Nexus types) I am looking to flash a ROM, though I am wary to do the flash given I may wipe all her personal data, apps, videos etc, can this be avoided without a backup and restore? or is a full nandroid backup and user data advisable given wipe cache, dalvik and factory will/may erase all user data? I ask as there is less than 500MB left on the phone storage for a nandroid backup, so I am looking for a simple method.
I have uploaded photos to flckr, so could free up some space by deleting the 8GB they take up on the phone, if needed.
Also, apart from using the nexus toolkit to flash ROMs, can I use Odin mobile pro and old faithful; CWM?
I'm asking all these (noobie q's)about the samsung google galaxy nexus as I am more offay with the S2 way of doing things.
Advice is appreciated.

To flash a ROM, you'll need to wipe data/factory reset from a custom recovery, which WON'T delete userdata aka /sdcard/ - personal files.
... It is quite obvious that you don't know your way around a Nexus. Have you even unlocked its bootloader? Doing this will wipe userdata. You need an unlocked bootloader to flash a custom recovery, anything really. No need to be using ODIN, this isn't primarly a Samsung device, but a Google device. Use the tools they gave you. Correct name is Google Galaxy Nexus. Not even sure why XDA has it under Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Please don't use a toolkit if you want to be in control. Read this to understand the power of a Nexus device.
Thanks for the reply.
Wouldn't the nexus toolkit unlock the bootloader when rooting? given I rooted the phone already using the nexus toolkit. Anyway to check?
Also my concern on potentially erasing all user data is that the nexus doesn't have an external sdcard (that I could remove) and the fact that it has a shared internal sd, so I am/was concerned on deleting user data.
You advised to use google tools, though at the same time would odin mobile app still work? as an option.
edit
I checked that when I rooted the phone it has a custom recovery (I should assume the bootloader is now unlocked) checked by putting the phone into recovery, which happens to be TWRP which I don't like, so I'll put CWM on the phone and try Odin..
Initially all userdata was removed when I rooted the phone, no big deal given it was a new phone, though will flashing a custom ROM delete all userdata (given the shared storage), or can I assume that it'll be similar to flashing on a S2 where user data on internal sd is not touched?

f you see a little lock under the google logo on startup your bootloader is unlocked. And as beekay201 said your internal storage will not be touched when you flash a new ROM by doing a Factory reset. But you will lose all your apps (just like on the s2). That can be solved with titanium backup. You'll also lose your settings but it isnt that big deal.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium HD app
Yeah the lock sign is unlocked (I figured it meant the phone was unlocked and rooted) it's always nice to be reassured.
Thanks )) much appreciated!
I should be ok going forward, fingers crossed.

Hi! Is it possible to do a factory reset without deleting personal files in the internal storage? Like pictures? I'm practicing not using an SD card since the phone has ample storage. I'm just annoyed that everything gets deleted. XD
Hello.
When you do a factory reset, you generally only wipe data and cache. Not the internal storage nor the external SD-card, unless you choose to do it.
If you're not sure though, you can just copy your whole internal storage to your computer just to be safe.

Thanks for the input! I think all Zenfone 2 running at stock ROM doesn't have an option to retain or delete files. It just basically wipes everything in the internal storage. I already have it backed up. I'm just annoyed that the pictures are all messed up when I put them back to the phone after restore. I still go through root, File Timestamp app, then unroot, just to get the images organized. XD
Why do a factory reset if you are on stock? I have downloaded the stock rom from ASUS and dirty flashed it. That gave me the full rom back (I messed up and deleted things I should not have) and did not lose any data
Well, I usually do a factory reset after I update, or when I feel that something is not right (frequently). I resort to reflashing if factory reset doesn't do the job.

I've moved up several firmware versions on my ZF2 and in the end if I don't do a complete reset on the phone it has strange issues, doesn't matter if I wipe the Cache or even wipe my ass. the OTA update doesn't work right on a stock rom too well.

Agreed! I think I've already been doing the same thing on several smartphones I've owned. Firmware update = factory reset, or sometimes, flash + factory reset. On my previous phone, I wasn't too worried about picture time stamps and arrangement since they were stored on an SD card. But now that I'm using a 64GB, I was thinking of settling down on the internal storage, but sadly, there's no option to skip on wiping the personal files. I was thinking of fixing pictures via USB, but 5.x only supports MTP.

Now that I've had time to think about it, the 64 GB wasn't really needed in my case....but I wanted the 4 GB of ram. I store everything I care about on my SD card so resetting doesn't take all my ****. I'm still on the stock Rom because I want to make sure I don't have any hardware issues and need to send it back. I was still having a few issues even after the 165 update, so " once again " I wiped the bish and started over. seems to be better now, but I may just give in and root it with something Bare-Bone because I'm hating the way all the crap is loaded on this phone.
So, I'm not using it as my daily phone yet, left my mac at work this weekend and I want to apply depixel8 before setting it up the way i want. Knowing full well I would be wiping it, I decided to restore from a google backup from August. This was the last backup before applying Android N to my Nexus 6P. After that update, my 6P bootlooped non stop until I wiped in recovery and set it up without anything restored. Well, after about an hour or so, the Pixel is also stuck in a bootloop. Only way to end it was recovery and wipe. I'm guessing there is something in that Marshmallow backup that isn't compatible with N. Bummer because that's where all my saved wifi networks are.
After I get to run depixel8 tomorrow I'll try restoring and just leave the apps out and see if it sticks.
My Nexus 5x is begining to really crawl, I'd like to start fresh from factory but I dont know how to do it. I have TWRP installed and last time I did a factory reset it seems to still stick. Does anyone know how to speed up the nexus 5x without having to factory reset?
hi all, I am planning to buy a Huawei mate 20 X and thought you all will be able to help to clear my doubts. As I know there are ways to get the personal data back even after a factory reset. I have read and tried data recovery softwares to recover files from SD card. As I know, in apple devices, if you factory resets, there is no way of getting your old data back without backups from icloud or itunes. That is a very good option if you are selling your used device so no one can take your personal data. I am planning to sell my device also after some time to upgrade. Is there a way to delete everything permanently in the mobile (factory reset) which no one can recover again? Even after a factory reset, i heard there are 3rd party softwares for Andriod based devices to recover data without any backups. I am a samsung user and planning to move to Mate 20 X. Please help me. Thank you in advance.
