If I buy this phone, and plan to root it, can I root it reliably. I have only rooted a device with the Android Debug Bridge. Are all of the root methods reliable, and will they work 100% after a few attempts. And can I restore it to older versions in order to root at any point in time? So, to sum it up, will the root always work? And will is their a chance of a unrootable device?
Depends of which model number your g3 is. I am pretty new to rooting but i didn't have any trouble rooting my g3. D855 is my g3
Go for the D855 Model.
Great ROM support,easy rooting,great performance for now.
While in recent days rooting might add a few extra steps, you should be fine, especially with the D855 variant.
Some root methods don't work now, there are other new ones. You can upgrade and downgrade, but there are some minor limitations as I can remember.
Should be good with a D855 really.

I don't have that model, but just throwing it out there. Have you tried Kingroot? The latest updates to it seem to root the latest official LG ROMs for the VS985 and VK810 - don't recall if I've seen people comment the same for the VK815. If it does work you can always use SuperSUMe to replace it with SuperSU if you'd rather.
It doesn't work with x8.5 (vk815 model). Its amazing that there is such limited information on this tablet. Probably cause it's Verizon exclusive

Just used the method in this thread about 3 weeks ago, and it worked. It's a bit painful, especially if you're not familiar with Linux (I am not), but I made it work after several hours of tinkering. You will need a computer running Linux, or a virtual machine running Linux, unless you just want to use the stock rooted 11A OTA that the OP uploaded to the thread. Personally, I didn't want to lose all of my settings and such from my pre-root days, so I copied my system.img from my device and ran the root inject program.
So i recently purchased the Lg G3 on Ebay because it was on sale and it seem like a good deal...............anyway ive had lots of phones from iphones to androids, i always love to root my devices now the issue now is that i cant seem to find a way to root this g3 with the one click root method or any other method (expect Kingroot). Everytime i try the one click root or any root it does all the loading and process and reboots but no super su or root happens. I finally looked around and found a post that said to use kingroot and i did and it worked, but the reason i want to root my device is to flash other roms and tinker with other things and i dont know how to do that without a recovery menu like twrp. I have the LG G3 AS985 which has literally no support anywhere when it comes to rooting or anything. So if i can get someone that knows either how to root it with one click or with kingroot and have the recovery work with it OR if he can at least show me how i can do it without a recovery meaning flash roms and stuff without a recovery using kingroot . (im a noob sorry) or if i can at least upgrade to marshmallow to have something a little nicer anyway any help would be great.
sidenote: i heard that i may be able to use the vs985 recovery with the as985 but i really dont want to brick my phone. Again im a noob so go easy on me pls.

Some people said if you update this phone to a android 6 it may become a brick. Because some refurbished phones might have different motherboard. How can I know for sure? I am screwing around with my VS985 G3 but I have random / phantom screen touches and the top 20% of the screen doesn't register touches properly anymore. I just tried doing a factory reset thinking it might be software problem but it still seems to have the same issues (23C) when hard reset. Soooo, I am considering moving up to the G4, but the main thing I don't want to lose is the unlimited hotspot data since I still have the old unlimited plan and use it frequently as a hotspot for devices in the house. So I needed root to install the hotspot mod and want to make sure I can root any G4 I wind up purchasing.
What are the requirements for a rootable G4? Are there firmware versions that are not downgradable via kdz/tot method? Should I ask before purchase for a device that is on firmware XX or lower to ensure downgrade capability?
From what I understand the G4 is the end of the line for unlocked bootloader devices, correct? I don't have any other internet options at my location so the unlimited data through VZW is critical to me at this point thus I can't live w/out the root access on my device.
Any recommendations or help is appreciated!

I was hoping someone could just advise about firmware level that allows downgrade? I am reading up on the G4 but not sure yet what version of firmware or > prevents downgrades. My preference would be to buy a phone I can downgrade to 13B and run a custom ROM. Now looking more closely at the "android development" forum for G4 I see there really aren't any custom ROMS for G4. Is this because G4 is a locked bootloader?
In the meantime I determined my G3 screen really does have a problem so ordered a replacement, so I'll try that since I was able to downgrade that to 10B and so should be able to keep that running with custom ROM's until I decide what I want to do to upgrade. I do see that hotspot mod is actually available on G4 with 13B root. I'm just concerned about buying a G4 which won't allow downgrade so hoping to get an answer about that.
The verizon G4 has a locked bootloader so no custom ROMs here, but you can certainly root. I just recently downgraded from the latest firmware to 13b rooted and as far as I know there is no firmware version that blocks downgrading via LGUP. However, If hardware problems is what your trying to avoid than stay far far away from the G4. It has a long history of hardware faults and I personally have lost 2 G4s due to hardware failure.
Thanks Justa. So it looks like I'm just better off sticking with the G3. So far the hardware has been fine, just hoping replacing the screen does the trick.

Hey guys, i'm having a lot of trouble rooting my LG G3. It is the D855 unlocked variant running Android 5.0, Kernel 3.4.0, Soft Ver V21a-EUR-XX. (If there is any more info needed, let me know.)
I've must have tried 6 or 7 different root methods but they all fail in various ways. I've used IORoot, OneClick, Towelroot, KingRoot, Stump Root and more. Can anyone suggest a viable root method for me or know why all these root methods fail?
EDIT: I upgraded to 6.0 and i'm just gonna stick with that for the time-being instead of installing a custom ROM. I tried to delete the thread but couldn't see where the option was.

Hmm I think 5.0 was supported, so perhaps you are not doing some of the steps properly? Are you following the steps in one of the tutorials around the forum?
Anyways newer versions cannot be rooted, you need to downgrade to KitKat first, root, install custom recovery and then install a custom ROM which will update your OS.
I highly recommend a good clean AOSP based 7.1.1 ROM for performance -- LineageOS is a great contender.
My LG G3 is very fast and snappy on AOSP 7.1.1 and it's 2 years old. As such I don't feel the need to upgrade my device for at least a few more years (as long as possible really) on the contrary of some people who seem to like spending money on a new phone every year (which I can't afford to do anyway -- both money wise and environmentally wise)
