Please excuse..I am very impressed by the massive amount of knowledge available here, but I was unfortunately not able to figure out the simple picture ( not your fault----my fault.)
Is there more or less a consensus, on which ROM is the best and why?
criteria could be: max RAM left, stability, speed? are there major differences or are you more talking details and preferences?
I have the MDA Pro (got it for 3 months testing for free from t-mobile). I have to reset not far from 10times a day. I start out with a maximum of 15 Megs of RAM after each reset, and they are reduced to 10, 8, 6 nothing...very soon..after opening and shutting a few apps. e.g. I have 10 available, open PIE, and there you go, only 2 left....how can one live with this? Is my device behaving very differently from what you are used to?
also: would a RAM upgrade not be interesting? do 64 more MB really consume that much more energy? ( I am online with UMTS all the time, which drains the battery anyway, but i would guess in comparison the additional RAM consumes much less than that, no? so if i can run say 3 hours with umts on and 64megs it will run 2h45 with UMTS and 128 MB...what do you think?)
Please be so kind to reply..I tried to investigate the answers myself, but I really was not able to get the picure..I like the device and plan to get one for my vodafone card (is the VPA 4 ROM good?) but it is partially a real nightmare....
cheers,
Andy
Whats the deal with the battery? How long does it last for moderate use, and from 20% how long would it take to charge to 100%?
Is the htc "aggressive" memory management really that bad?
I live in south Texas, which means we're years away from LTE, should I buy the international version?
Is there some sort of software like iTunes to back up the phone?
Which has better battery, US version or International version?
Using it with one hand, is it possible for an average size male? Medium hand size?
Thanks!

You'll have to define 'moderate use'. Expect 3-4 hours screen time depending on call time and syncing Gmail, email and social networks etc.
You'll have to define 'that bad'. I have no problem whatsoever with memory management.
Yes, HTC Sync Manager.
I believe the AT&T version has slightly better battery (about 20%).
I can use it one handed OK. It can be tricky when reaching all the way across the screen but that's the unavoidable pitfall to a large screen.
I believe AT&T version only have 16Gb storage compared to international version with 32Gb.
Something to consider.
My usage from 7am to 9pm with 18% battery left, 3.5hrs screen time with 1hr of gaming, screen brightness is around 66%.
P.S. Battery takes 2.5 to 3 hrs to charge from empty to full, so maybe 2hrs to charge from 20% to 100%.
P.P.S. I'm using Juice Defender, also the phone is running with 3 cores and under-volted CPU. Stock ROM might have less usage time.
So the best battery life would be found on the us version? I figured the quad core would be more "battery friendly"

The Tegra 3 is based on older A9 40nm design and the S4 in US version is based on newer 28nm A15 design. The S4 is just as fast as the Tegra and it is more energy efficient.

the us version is only dual core, and should have better battery life yes. see the rogers/at&t forum for more info

oh boy, not again
I have decided to get the HOX instead of the GS3 as I can get the 32GB for the price of a 16GB galaxy, and the hardware seems much better and the phone much nicer.
As far as I understand, the 32GB version is the INTERNATIONAL version which basically is a 4 cores and no LTE HOX.
If I get this international version, there would be no problems with rooting and installing custom roms?
My other and very important concern, what about battery life? I read comments where it says it lasts about 6 hours of normal use, which is too little. I thought the HOX had great battery life, or is this a problem with the international version only?
THANKS!
Please ask about this on the international one x forums
Sent from my HTC One XL using Tapatalk 2
Didn't realized there was one, can any moderator move it there? Thanks.
One xl comes in 32gb in several regions. That spec alone does not define if the phone is Evita or endeaver.
I'm positive is not the LTE because is about 500 new unlocked for 32GB, and it says GSM phone on the description.

If you're worried about development progress on the HoX T3, you've got nothing to worry about. It's one of the most active dev forums on XDA. If you got the XL version then you have reason to worry cos development there is a bit on the slow side unfortunately /:
6 hours of normal use? Define normal use I get 3-4 hours on screen time with moderate usage and some heavy duty gaming. Screen auto brightness.
Right, what would be normal use for some would be not normal for others.
I do not use it for long periods of time, but maybe I check incoming emails about 10/20 times a day, send/read another 10/20 whatsapp messages, talk no more than 1 hour on average, and maybe another 30 minutes of browsing.
I currently have a SGS2, and I manage to get about 14 hours of phone use like that, more or less, would I be able to get better battery on the HOX? Would it make any difference if it is the dual core or quad core version?
Thanks.

The dual core version has better battery life while in use, but the quad core one has better standby performance cos of it's 5th companion core. Since the phone will be on standby for the majority of the time, it kinda evens out. Tegra 3 has better talk time, while S4 has better on screen time. Both will definitely last you a whole day at the least I haven't checked out battery performance in awhile, cos it's always plugged in at my office pc But I can do a few tests starting today/tomorrow for a few days to see what my combination of ROM and Kernel does for battery life.
Thanks for the information. So I would buy the international version then, and an S3, just in case, and see which one gives me more battery (really hope it is the HOX, as the S3 is horrible, the S2 is much better looking).

The S3 does have a bigger battery though.. Also depends which S3 you're getting, the S4 Krait or the Exynos version (international)

I currently have an S2, which I love, even if I would like the battery to last 2~4 more hours at least, which I would like to upgrade from.
While I love the aesthetics of the S2 in general, I do not like the S3 that much, and love the HOX aesthetics. My only problem with the HOX, or any other phone for that matter, is again battery time.
I think that in general, the HOX and the S3 are more or less the same, the only differences being aesthetics and maybe battery time.
So you are saying that the S3 has a longer lasting battery? Would the Krait last longer in general than the Exynos or the opposite?
I would prefer the HOX, any of the HOXes, to the S3, but battery is the most important thing for me, so much that I have even considered a Razr Maxx, but I'm not so sure about it.
If battery is of the utmost importance, then maybe you'd like to wait for the HoX+ that will be out in shops soon. It has a bigger battery, slightly better front camera, comes with JB and Sense 4+ and a slightly faster clocked Tegra 3. I haven't seen many S3 Exynos reviews yet cos most review sites are US-based, hence having access to the Krait version first. For really in-depth reviews I go for anandtech, they did a review for the Krait S3's already but none for the Exynos yet.
The HoX+ has a 2100 mAh battery, while the S3 has a 2100 mAh battery as well. Both will last you through a day easily, with the S3 slightly ahead.
I would say the Krait would outlast the Exynos, but that's just me making a guess haha.
Should I return my 16gb G3 and buy a 32gb G2 to save some money and have better battery life? The battery sucks on G3 with quad hd and is difficult to see and difference in the screen resolution. Any comments would help me make up my mind. Thanks
I have only had the 32gb for 1 day but i do know the 32gb has 3 gigs of ram instead of the 16's 2 gigs. The first tmobile store ONLY had 16 gb's so i went to a diff store and got a 32

You are not likely to go from using a word like (suck) to use a word like fantastic, in regards of better battery from G2 over G3.
Because its the same battery. I assume the difference between the two phones is mostly visible in SOT (Screen on time)
I do not like to settle mid-range. I'm more likely to sell my G3 and buy a firstgen smartphone (android or iphone) just a phone that will get me through the day. I was surprised how little was necessary for me: wating for my G3 I was using a htc sense, slow but hey it worked. I kept thinking, do we really need all this. Some where along the road a new phone will pop up aswell, that's why it's a wise choice to settle with a phone that you don't depend on to sell before buying a new one, or signing up on a new contract.
There's a huge debate on this topic or there could be. Psychological side-effects from stacking need upon requirements. Leat's not go into that now
If you were to get a G2, you'd have to want the ekstra money and probably use them wisely or not use them at all. How much can you save? It should be atleats 100£ imho.
32 gb one is awesome
I've got the 2/16 GB model of the G3, and I personally love it. After upgrading to firmware 10J from 10F, I saw a huge improvement in battery performance and drainage. For me it lasts an extra few hours after getting some basic settings tweaked like turning off NFC/Bluetooth, and having WiFi disabled when it's not in use. Also another thing to do is to stop WiFi from searching for other networks automatically.
So far with this setup, I'm getting through a full day and well into the night till I put it back on charge. I have battery saver to enable once it hits 10 percent. I'm going to check out DS Battery Saver tomorrow and try that for a week as apparently it gives about another hour from what I've read.
My usage tends to be all the social sites, FB, Gram, Snap, etc pretty much throughout the day with a few hours of Youtube at night and lots of picture taking.
I wouldn't go back to the G2, OP. Tweak your G3, disable a few things and wait for the new firmware release.
Thanks to all who replied so far. I'm still inside my 14 day return window and having owned a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx for the passed few years it's difficult to move away from a phone that lasts 12 hours plus with heavy usage. It always surprises me how the Razr maxx 3300 mAh is never compared with the new phones concerning battery life. I may even just stay with my Moto?

Keep in mind you're comparing a phone of a previous generation ( therefore less power consuming hardware ) and it also has a larger battery capacity. Most of the smart phones, even high end ones are between 2800 - 3000 mAh. If you were to put in a larger capacity battery into my G3, I could see it lasting 12 hours of usage.
Hello all.
I was thinking if anyone here had a problem like mine or knows what to do.
I bought a LG G4 dual sim 818p last week.
the phone is great, but it has some problem that i think is software related, and i think is governor problem.
It has the latest android version avaible, original from lg.
the thing is that in standby it is great, i get 1% drain in 24 hours...
but if i use the phone just for web browsing or facebook it heats as hell, and i lose 1% batery in 3 minutes...
no gaming, no downloading and no SIM card in it.
Just drains as hell and gets to hot just for web browsing.
I also noticed with battery gsam analyser that if i use the phone it always puts the all processors on 100% speed and for me that is the problem and it has got to be a bug on the governor settings.
any ideas?
many thanks,
what can i do?

Not having a simcard does phone scans fro network?
you could do factory reset if same flash stock firmware using LGUP.. if its marshmallow then be careful wich antirollback you 0n... also i read
LP has better battery than MM.
Hi,
many tanks for your reply.
I also did the same test with the sim cards inserted and the problem was the same.
Meanwhile I flashed the original rom version V20b (I had the V20f) and althou the problem is not gone, things have improved mery much.
I am now sure the problem is software related with the rom and the way it manages the cpu load and speed.
I am pretty much sure if developers of the original rom had more attention to cpu load vs cpu speed this phone could be awsome and have great battery life.
The thing is way does it need to have 6 cores running on full speed just for webbrowsing? It seems to me they dont know how to control the ammount of cpu cores and speed vs the load we put on it.

You can install V10 Lollipop and heatup problem will be resolved. MM has issues on 818 in terms of battery drain + heatup.
Even I am currently facing Battery drain Issues was thinking to switch to LP...!! But my LGUP does not detect my phone !!! (818N)
from my experience, i've already tried rolling back to a lot of different version of lollipop, v10k rooted+debloated, v10l rooted+debloated, camuix v3 (v10d base), camuix alpha test4 (v10e base), i love using xposed framework, and also i'm a user who loves installing things,it was about 400+ apps/games installed and guess what, it drains my battery 5-7% every 15 minutes without doing anything. and then i tried again using marsmallow, first, i install v20e, but i don't like the UI that much, so i flashed genisys system.img (v20c base) via download mode and disabling some bloatware via debloater. so after having v20c with genisys ui, i install every apps/games i had before 1 by 1, and now, there's about 428-433 apps/games on my phone. after day to day use, i don't really feel too much battery drain regarding a lot of apps/games i had. and also it will go overheat just when playing games or watching videos, it doesn't really overheat when browsing. and about the SOT, it can go up to 3-4 hours depending on network or gps uses, when i use my phone as turn by turn navigation, it can survive about 2.40-3.20 hours. actually, i do really miss every xposed framework i uses before, but i don't really feel so much different. because now in marsmallow, i can use my 128gb microsd as adoptable storage, a lot of CPU & GPU governor improvements, a lot of OOT improvements, a genisys theme, and by using such apps like floatify, fooview, appblock, and adguard, it just feel's like a rooted phone. and one last thing, now i can throw away any kernel or script modifier i've previously used, it was a really really hard time on optimizing this phone with that method, lolz. btw if u need some screenshot, i'll post it

well if you unlocked bootloader flahsing other kernels might have different governors some are foe performance some are more tame... yes i agree why use alot of cores when it can handle with one core or 2.. but thats how governors are some are in ondemand it goes from lowest cpu to highest cpu only if you open a pic.. its less lags but all that cores arent need it.. a governor like smartass v2 or intellimn will use less cores depending on what you are doing.
