Would you buy one of these today?

I'm in the UK and I was considering picking one of these up. I can get a brand new unlocked 32GB model for under £100.
Would I be mad to buy one? I've been reading lots of reviews from a year ago, but very few people speaking about using one today.
I bought one for essentially 30 dollars and it's fine for what it is. CM11 runs great, if you don't need a perfect camera.
£100 is probably a bit too much IMO. Better to go with a Moto G or even a Moto E at this time.

If you want a smartphone that many people are talking about and using today, then the Fire Phone will be a bad buy for you. If you just want a good cheap phone and you are an Amazon prime member and the phone come with 1 free year of prime, then the phone will be a good buy. If you subtract £79 for prime from £100, the phone will cost you less than £21.
fire phone bought in the UK doesn't come with free prime membership anymore!
No prime no way! 100 is too much. Euros pounds or dollars.
Honestly, this thing, with google play installed blows both the Moto E and G out of the water. Has LTE ( e does not ), more ram, a better adreno processor, and all for less then 100 bucks. You guys are crazy if you think a moto G is as fast as the firephone cause it isnt. it becomes apparent when you try to play higher end games that the adreno 306 the 3rd gen G has isnt enough.
I updated to 4.6.3, installed the play store via the directions of an awesome poster on here, and put cheetah launcher to replace the fire launcher. Instant win. Id go for it and nab a fire.
FireOS is a key factor for me. If you like it things will work well. I couldn't stand it. If not you can install CM11 or SlimKat but will deal with some bugs like the camera. Those may get worked out though, who knows. I put on CM11 and love it and the bugs don't affect me much. I love the form factor, CM, and being rooted. In all cases any major updates are iffy. People are on the fence if it will get FireOS 5 or the bootloader unlocked. Without prime though I'd be on the fence about getting one.
Yes I'd get one. Might even get another for the Mrs if I can find a reputable source. I've had a Moto g and e. Currently have a nexus 4 and fire and fire is easily the best overall. Admittedly, not out of the box though.
I have two of them and a 2015 moto e and change among them frequently. The second one was $20 (after subtracting amazon prime with its state tax). I keep one rooted, Xposed, and use fireos, and the other with cm11/slimkat. The firephone is a great piece of hardware (the multi processor benchmark is higher than the oneplus one) that is hamstrung by a very mediocre OS, Amazon keeping some of the source code unavailable for the devs, and not letting folks unlock the bootloader.
I wouldn't buy it without Amazon Prime. But with Prime, it is at worst a good little camera or a gamer for kids at a cheap price. The moto e (2015 has lte) is a great little, inexpensive phone that does everything well - but not great. It's not the speediest, but it's always been fast enough for me.

I will concede hardware wise, Fire Phone wins out. But hardware isn't everything. You either have to stay on the atrocious Fire Phone OS or change to CM11 that has a wonky camera. While CM11 is nice, it's not going to get updated to CM12 or CM13 due to the lock bootloader and the camera is very likely not going to fixed as Amazon didn't properly source out their ****. Moto G is already on Lollipop and will likely be updated to what ever is after Marshmallow. And it has a working camera, same amount of ram, and bigger screen.
I got my unlocked refurb fire phone for $60 without Amazon Prime attached. It came with the box, headphone and charger. At first I was really skeptical of my decision... FireOS is really ugly.
But once I got root, supersu-me, and play store, I promptly installed Nova Launcher, which made my experience so much better: it was essentially a rooted Kitkat rom with an Amazon menu screen.
Compared to my previous device, Galaxy Note 2, the development is stunted because of its locked bootloader. However, it has more storage space and a much faster CPU.
My main gripe is the back swipe. I don't think I have any other alternatives to make that disappear other than installing CM 11. I can't do that because I need my snapchat lol. Another problem is the size.. 4.7 in and unwieldy sides cramp up my thumbs. In addition, the camera (stock or snapchat) can't focus correctly even after I wipe the lense, so I can't take advantage of OIS +digital zoomed photos.
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. I think I can make it through with this device for a while. If the bootloader ever gets unlocked that'll be a treat.

Got mine for 130€ from T-Mobile (in germany).
For this price it is a fantastic phone. Most of the software quirks can be easily worked around (root + gapps = win) and its hardware should be good enough for the next ~2 years.
I've got a Moto G as my every day driver and the Fire blows it away in most every regard honestly. The big thing is Fire OS as it's pretty horrible but now that you can easily add the Play Store and then a Launcher to go along with it, that pretty much solves the Fire OS "issue".
I bought my Fire for around 25 bucks with a year of Prime so it was an easy choice as worst case scenario I'd have a phone with a great camera (as compared to the Moto G) and another device for my son to play with or me to use for music.
I'd definitely buy it again just because it's so cheap and just fun to play with.
I bought mine for $80 second hand without prime, I think it was worth every penny. I rooted it and put Google Play and Google Now, I haven't put CM-11 on it yet because I don't want to loose 5Ghz wireless or the good camera.

Imo, with Google play store and root, we can get around a lot of the initial problems with the fire phones, mainly the launcher.

Did those that have stayed in the fire OS, do you have problems with background apps? I found that most apps that has a background process didn't work. Ie hangouts wouldn't alert me to a message or Tasker wouldn't run scheduled events. Was that just me? That's what drove me to cm11 but if I could fix that I might go back until the camera issue is sorted out.

Some apps require Google services for push notifications. Some don't. I'm not running Google services. Telegram, Conversations, AwSMS, NoNonsense Notes, F-Droid, all seem to be notifying me of events normally.
EDIT:
I've recently noticed Telegram is giving me issues. Sometimes, it doesn't update until I manually open the app. I haven't changed anything or done any system updates. I'm not sure if its been that way all along, or if its something new.

I had Google services installed at the time. I'm wondering if I did something wrong while installing. All the apps worked fine aside from the background processes. I know it shut them down if I removed from the carousel, but even if I didn't, they still wouldn't with.
Would not buy one again
Although the hardware is good, Amazon software is terrible. It is very buggy - most of their apps are buggy. For example my phone is loosing contacts on the regular basis, the amazon appstore settings crashes and would not let me change settings. Maps do not work without setting up amazon account. The status bar font is invisible, unless you have a perfect vision. If you lock from full screen app like fbreader, status bar is invisible on the lock screen. Lock screens do not show workable clock, they show stylized clock that is hidden in the jungle or some such nonsense. You can't tell if your battery is charging, etc. etc. Amazon should fire whoever designed that user interface. Fire os is complete garbage although it originated from android.
CM11 works great BUT camera does not work well and mute button requires workarounds.
In the end I went back to fire os for the camera and mute. With CM launcher and simple image lock screen, it is barely passable phone. I wish I could get some third party lock screen to work which has large time display.
Prime has very little value to me so for the same money I would go with Moto E or Moto G. These provide much better experience IMHO.

Just curious.. Who's updating to note 7??

Just for convo.. Thx
I'm on the fence, but I'm leaning towards a No.
I'll tell you why:
1. It's smaller then my Note 5 (while the difference isn't big on paper, its big in hand.. and to be honest after Note 5 and realizing how much more screen real estate = more use/functionality/video/beauty, I now want a BIGGER screen vs smaller)
2. Only 3500 mah battery, really? for a screen that size.. I know I know.. its the stylist, but still .. what do I use more often.. a stylist or extra day of battery?.. Battery wins
3. It's expensive as hell and really has the same guts as S7 Edge.. so no bragging rights that its so much better
Note 7 alternatives I'm keeping my eye on:
1. Huawei Note 8 - 6.6 inches
2. Huawei Mate 8 - 6 inches
Why, so we can be locked out again. I am hoping for a bad ass nexus to drop

The Huawei Mate 8 display has only 1080x1920 resolution. The Huawei Note 8 display will have the same resolution as the Note5/7 (2560x1440), but at 6.6" it will be almost as large as my 7" tablet, which is good for many purposes but I would not want to carry it in my pocket.
I am, but I'm a sucker every year. It's just a bad habit at this point.
Honestly, though, the removable storage is the biggest reason. There's no way I'm going to ever use the iris scanner - it's four steps more than using thumbprint. But, I applaud the innovation!
I am but then again its a habit at this point lol anyone want to buy a Note 5 with $150 worth of accessories lol

I will be moving to the international version of the note 7. AT&T is no longer getting my money for their junk phones. With root I can make these android phones battery go as long as 10 days.
No. Edge is not an independent screen.
Note edge has the best edge functionality
Nope. I'm staying away from AT&T phones. May see what nexus brings to the table

Personally I'm going to pass on the AT&T version. Going to China in a couple of weeks for work . I'll pick up their version unlocked there. Makes more sense to get the 6 Gig of ram and the 128 of internal memory Evernote if it's only 64 I'm still winning

Not to mention thE added benefits of new cpu technology. That is if you stay away from Qualcomm crap!
I personally went yesterday for the fun of it to check the note 7 at my local AT&T store and guess what ? My note 5 can dance in circles around it. Hated the edge and in all honesty it feels like an S7 edge with the pen in it. Nothing special and all the new features that they keep talking about can be easily implemented with a software update. So unless I get the nicer beefier version from China I'm going to pass and that always on display in ran into an app that works perfect with my note 5. And it's not that glance one.

Looking to buy Moto Z Play. PLease help out with some queries.

Hi everyone,
I am looking to buy a new phone here in India and I am looking for a phone which will last me atleast 18-20 months from say January, 2017. I loved the battery stats of Moto Z PLay and since I dont game much on the phone apart from normal games and a Dead Trigger here and there, my priority is will the Snapdragon 625 processor be able to handle the upcoming apps and will its battery stay the same (approx) after 2 years or so.
I am a moderate user with social media, whats app and a bit of high net usage on wi-fi. Should I go for this or spend sme bucks more and buy OP3 or OP3T?
Thanks in advance!!!
:good: :good:
I was having the same debate - moto z play vs OP3T. I don't game at all, so the battery life + expandable storage trumps the top end performance and slightly better camera for me. Don't have it yet, but ordered a Z play yesterday. I'm seeing some pretty impressive battery numbers reported on the OP3T as well, so it's no slouch - solid for one day of heavy use
Dev support seems to be at about the same level on both devices at the moment, though if I had to guess, the OP3T will probably win out there in the end - only because in my experience most devs tend to purchase devices with higher end specs.
I've never been a big gamer but in normal everyday use the Z play is faster and smoother than my past few nexus phones. After using the phone for a few weeks the last thing I'm worried about is performance. Dropping it before I get a case is my biggest concern. Get a case or a bumper for this one
I would say go for the Z Play. I have had mine for over a month and it has truly impressed me. I have thought about exchanging for the regular Z but it's insane battery is not worth the extra performance I won't notice. The thing that impressed me most was even though I use it for intense games I have never noticed it struggle. It's mainly because the Z is such a well optimized phone. I think you will be very happy with your purchase.
Best regards

first things I do after buying new phone is case and screen protector. My current Xperia Z2 fell screen down, flat from a height of 4 and half feet and my heart stopped. Picked it up, nothing happened thanks to glass screen protector.
Anyways, the dual sim and sd card option is very attractive and though I wont even fill up the 64GB in OP3T, the spare parts avaialbility and after sale support of OP is dreadful. Till now, the lord of smartphones has been kind enough to keep me away from repair centers, but if it happens on OP, i will keep the phone (if I buy it) as a memento of the stupid decision to buy the damn phone.!!
@RealiZms... thanks a lot for the reply and help..

If it gives me even 3/4th the battery life and performance after 20 months times (talking abt the Z Play), I will be very happy. I was looking to buy the Moto G4 Plus, but the heating and ghost touch issues put me off. Will be going to check the handset out in a couple of days and will order it during the Christmas/New Year sale on Amazon or Flipkart (Local Indian e-commerce site).
The only thing keeping me from splurging on OP3/3T is the horror stories of after sales service. The lack of spare parts and other things have kept me away from buying even the OP2. Hope my choice of Z Play doesnt dissapoint me.
thanks for your reply and help, mate. :good: :good:
Good day bros.
I was asking the exact same question for the past week. Got rid of my Mi 5 due to its inability to make the NFC transit card work. Non-gamer mostly social media, surfing on my phone use. Was tempted by the great 'bang for the buck' offered by 3T, but I got the Z play in the end because, among other things, the one and only oneplus service centre in my country has closed down.
Not regretting it. No need to root, etc, everything NFC transport sim, fingerprint login with bank apps, Android Pay, it all just works. No hardcore gaming but regular apps work. No annoying china brand UI to deal with.
Oh and the battery life. Insane. I didn't even bring my USB-C wire to the office
Tried the Moto G Plus and returned it due to inadequate performance and ghost touch. Tried the Pixel XL but returned it because overpriced and not perfect. Tried the Moto Z Play and love it. Surprisingly haven't noticed any performance issues aside from the mediocre camera. The UI is very snappy. However the battery will change your life.
I got indian version of z play and let me tell ya, i play in it like a desktop (hardcore) and it gives me 8-9 hour battery. I download 80+GB from wifi each month. Its been 2 month i guess. I think Moto Z Play is the best smartphone within 30000₹ including future considerations.
I'm coming from an LG G3. Loved that phone, but tonight, it just died right in the middle of my using it. It's two years old and JUST went off contract. Took the latest update a few weeks ago and then my SD Card slot started acting flaky. So, I'm thinking this is all part of hardware failure and maybe the SD slot not working was the first sign.
Gaming wise, the G3 was awesome. I play games like Walking Dead No Man's Land, Game of War, Clash of Clans, and I do have games purchases like the GTA games. Does anyone have any idea how well this phone would work with those games? I can get this from VZW for $17/month which is cheaper than what my G3 was on the old contract ($40/month). Of course, after this month, my bill WOULD have dropped $20/month when the phone went off contract. Makes me wonder if VZW did this? lol
In any case, I've read reviews and even though the camera is 16mp as opposed to the 13mp I had on the G3, it sounds like the camera is the typical old Moto camera that ISN'T the best. But, I'm not a proffesional photographer. if it's good for just taking normal family pictures, etc, that's all I care.
Battery life is the big thing. I could get the G3 to last over a day with normal talk and text. But I also game, so I suck the life out the battery pretty quickly.
Any help you can provide if this would be a good replacement will be much appreciated. I've been with XDA for over 5 years ever since I got my first Android phone.
Thanks and I might be joining the family here if I do get this phone.
UPDATE: Starting today, VZW is having the Moto Z, Samsung Galaxy S7 and Google Pixel for $10/month with NO trade-in. So it looks like I'll be getting one of those. Just found out today while looking on their website.

I actually dont use the camera much apart from clicking pics at family functions or outings. I dnt think I have even taken a selfie. the camera on Xperia Z2 was great, not only in terms of specs (21 mp and all), but the pics came out great. but if Moto Z Play's camera does what I have read, its adequate for me. If needed will buy a second hand DSLR.

Hi everyone who helped me in making this decision. I have ordered a Moto Z PLay (white....by mistake ) from Flipkart (indian e-commerce site).
I exchanged it for my old Xperia Z2 and got it for 15k INR or around 230 USD along with all discounts with credit cards and everything. will be delivered on boxing day and thankfully will be able to update on it in next few weeks.

I got an LG 65" smart TV, a 55" Samsung smart TV and 52" Vizio Smart TV, MirrorLink to smart TV is not working with any of them. However you can use an application named AllCast from play store (it's a paid application, the free one gives you only 5 minutes of transmission time for free), with that application you will be able to mirror videos, pictures, power points, etc to the smart TV. You can't mirror the entire content from your phone to the smart TV, but that is good enough for me.

Pixel 2 xl or mate 10 pro?

About 100 bucks difference
I currently have a mate 10 pro that has a defective battery I am about to return (battery needs to be charged twice a day on a light use) .
But lost between ordering another or go for the pixel 2 xl?
I know huawei has a bad record of updating their phones.
They already released some updates but still no sign of them on ota.
I've had both and pixel 2 XL is much better imo.
The problem that i had with EMUI is app compatibility. When I had the Mate 9 hulu didn't work and google locations wouldn't update. It looks like the Hulu issue was resolved but if you browse the xda mate 10 forums many people are having issues with widgets. I also think the menu interface is still too cluttered. The updates are far and few
I had a mate 10 pro, hardware wise its a better phone in my opinion, nicer shape, I just really didn't like the software if they made a stock android version and got rid of the iOS wannabe software they would be on to a winner...
No persistent notifications on the lockscreen for EMUI was the reason I went back to Pixel phones.

If you don't want firmware updates in a timely manner go with Huawei.

Whats the battery life on the pixel like? Big difference between mate 10 and pixel?

There both good. The pixel seems better. But think the mate 10 pro still had some software tweaks to make the battery life better. I never run out of battery by bed time with the pixel. Lowest I get is maybe 30 percent with heavy usage. Could easily last couple days maybe bit more with light usage
With the recent 6P battery/bootloop of death issue (I had to return mine), not sure I'd even want to look at Huawei so soon.

The 5X made by LG also has bootloop issues. I think there was something else there, like the SoC that year had issues, or maybe coincidence that both Huawei and LG had manufacturing issues.
Where are the $299 Nexus 4 phones from a few years ago ... It really sucks to spend this much on a phone these days and have all sorts of issues battery, bootloop, screen, ... I suppose you buy these phones with a credit card that extends the warranty by another 2 years, so on a Pixel 2 you get 2 years from Google + another 2 years from a good credit card and you're covered without buying an extended warranty plan.
So yeah to the OP, don't forget that the Pixel 2 has 2 yrs warranty from Google.

I ordered one and received it today from amazon
Dunno why I decided to search on amazon again and found the phone 130 bucks cheaper
I asked them if they can price match they said no
So I ordered the cheaper one and gonna return the one I received
It was 760 instead of 889
Got both and use both constantly. Pixel 2 Xl as my private phone, Mate 10 Pro as my work one.
The Huawei "feels" better in hand to me. EMUI works well for me. I also like the camera on the Huawei, though the Pixels is better for point and shoot. As for the interface I really don't see the native one is a problem in any way, I simply downloaded the pixel 2 launcher and I see hardly any difference in real day to day use. The AOD isn't that useful as it only shows notifications from Huawei apps, you need to download third party AOD apps to work (Always On AMOLED).
The Pixel is very nice too and I like extras it has. Plain Google android, an Always On Display that actually works, the Shazam-like notifications, the way it is all just integrated.
I think if I was going to have a to choose it would be the Pixel but it wouldn't be a clear cut decision.
As many various tier Huawei phones I have tested & used, I would never buy any phone made by them. Their CPU always feels inferior to the latest Snapdragon, and multitasking is still something that hasn't been solved by them: try running 3 apps and switching between them, and the phone will lag like hell. I was also baffled when I tried to unlock the Mate 10 Pro, and it took 4 seconds to get to the home screen and draw all the icons... I'm sure Huawei makes decent phones and they have their audience, but they never offered anything that would appeal to me... And the camera is a joke for this price, just check this video:
Also, due to my work I've had the "luck" to get to know their ways of working a bit better than most people ever will (no, I never worked for Huawei), and let me tell you that adhering to standards is not their strong suit (not that Apple or Samsung are better at that department either). The Samsung-like spamming of the market with 10-15 devices with nearly identical capabilities is just one example of how the company wants to gain big market share (basically flood the market at a low cost entry point and ramp up the costs down the road to the point where you came out with a significant deficit...) without providing anything but worse quality (terms of code quality, for example).
As you can tell I pretty much despise the whole brand & can't be really objective in the question, but these are personal experiences that made me decide never-ever to buy anything made by Huawei (also, the fact that when I faced them with the reality that their flagship can't run 3 of my apps smoothly without getting sluggish they cut almost all ties with me...). That $100 difference will buy you not just a superb phone, but 2 years warranty, the (current) best camera solution a phone offers out of the box, timely updates for 3 years, a clutter- and bloatware-free Android experience, unlimited Photos storage for original image uploads for 3 years (from account activation on the phone), I even got the free Google Music promotion although I've been a subscriber for years now, just to name a few.

Quoted for the absolute truth. I was trying to make this same decision myself last year, coming from a Mate 9. All in all I did like the Mate 9, it did occasionally have very big lag moments, such as when launching Flipboard, but otherwise it really didn't feel any different from a Snapdragon to me. The camera is one of the weak points, as it has some serious issues with over exposing, and from reading reviews of the Mate 10, I'm not sure they got it right on the 10 either. But my biggest gripe by far would have to be the complete lack of any updates, especially security updates. I have a U.S. Mate 9, and it's still on a security update from June 2017. That plus reviews of the Mate 10 camera not being that great pushed me to get the Pixel 2 XL. The Pixel's camera on full auto is truly in a different league from the Mate 9's, even if you tried to use the Mate 9's manual modes...you can safely believe the hype about the Pixel 2's camera.

Dxo ranks mate 10 pro right after pixel 2
Alot of websites commended the mate 10s camera
So i got to tinker with the pixel 2 for a bit and I miss some features from Huawei
1. Dark mode.
2. I got used to the navigation dock on the mate 10 it made the screen look fuller and nicer to look at lol, another thing in the pixel I can't swap the navigation bar buttons ?
3. Just find it weird that when I click the recent button I have to scroll up to clear all the apps
Other than that the phone is bad ass
The camera is amazing and no bloatware
Hopefully Google would enable these things

Hahahahahaha..I doubt Google will grant your request. However, the rom developers just might ??

So, who else gave up?

I ordered the Fold 2 this weekend because of no damn Google services.
Feel like im downgrading because the Mate XS still looks better and has better software.
What a pity.

I'm thinking the same. I've got gms installed but the phone is too expensive to not have notifications from apps that message through Google, no Google pay, not play certified and so on...
Huawei could have fixed it all by unlocking the bootloader but no..
Well i still have mine and use it as a daily driver since may. Pretty happy to use microG for notifications and Aurora store for apps. I was surprised when Microsoft Outlook synchronised my google contacts with the phone. Also it syncs my google calendar and mail. Also youtube vanced with microG for YouTube premium. So no problems here.
I sometimes miss my markings and lists from google maps but this damned pandemic doesn't make it easy to travel )
Still very happy with mine with GMS sideloaded. The things I don't work are not things I would use anyway so for me it's still the best phone around.
Might be different if I had to reset it for some reason and couldn't reinstall GMS though, but I'm crossing fingers, it's also the most stable phone I've had in a long time.
My Thom Browne Z Fold 2 is still sealed because I love my XS too much and with 100% working GMS.
I am absolutely loving the Mate Xs with GMS fully working, using it alongside my iPhone 11 Pro Max.
I've had a mate Xs for a a few months now, got a original galaxy fold a few days ago and it's a clear downgrade, even with the X's having to side load stuff I would rather keep the Xs
Things I noticed
The galaxy folds crease is just more visible, the galaxy fold doesnt fold flat after some use while my mate Xs still does, the folded screen on the fold is a huge downgrade, the fold has lower screen brightness... So basically to much negatives even considering the position Huawei are in now
I am a fan of Samsung foldables. I've owned them from day one (the zfold 2) and the first Fold since December 2019.
Up until November I had the Zfold2, but a month ago I switched to the Mate XS as soon as I found it at a reasonable decent price and I'm thrilled with it. I find it more beautiful, more seductive, lot more usable as closed... better camera.. everything better than any Fold.
I would make this change again a thousand times because only XS gives me true emotions with the screen is open. About google services..well I don't use banking apps and I arranged very well with alternative apps, indeed I also found something superior, I just miss the PC-smartphone history on Chrome, its bookmarks or apps still unavailable as Waze.

it's nice to read this message actually me too I took the xs because it has more of an effect wow when you unfold it for google I put the gms and freeze the fram and I am satisfied and for google pay bah I pay with my watch.
I would keep it but lack of volte support on Vodafone UK make it unusable in some rural areas.
Anyone still going strong here ?
me always with my mate xs
yup, still keep it run and try to use it everyday
About to reach 2023 and just dropped the Z Fold 4 for my ole good Mate XS. I'm waiting for samsung to make a decent working good looking front screen. My Mate Xs is a phone on it's own without unfolding it so i'm keeping it at least until Fold 5 changes things, if it does.
I'm no longer Google services dependant, most apps i needed are now on Huawei store and others i need i just use an apk.
I still own it,
tonight it updated the security patches to February 2023.
Not bad for a 3 year old phone
Still rules
