So, who else gave up? - Huawei Mate XS Questions & Answers

I ordered the Fold 2 this weekend because of no damn Google services.
Feel like im downgrading because the Mate XS still looks better and has better software.
What a pity.
{Mod edit: Political statement removed. Oswald Boelcke}

I'm thinking the same. I've got gms installed but the phone is too expensive to not have notifications from apps that message through Google, no Google pay, not play certified and so on...
Huawei could have fixed it all by unlocking the bootloader but no..

Well i still have mine and use it as a daily driver since may. Pretty happy to use microG for notifications and Aurora store for apps. I was surprised when Microsoft Outlook synchronised my google contacts with the phone. Also it syncs my google calendar and mail. Also youtube vanced with microG for YouTube premium. So no problems here.
I sometimes miss my markings and lists from google maps but this damned pandemic doesn't make it easy to travel )

Still very happy with mine with GMS sideloaded. The things I don't work are not things I would use anyway so for me it's still the best phone around.
Might be different if I had to reset it for some reason and couldn't reinstall GMS though, but I'm crossing fingers, it's also the most stable phone I've had in a long time.

My Thom Browne Z Fold 2 is still sealed because I love my XS too much and with 100% working GMS.

I am absolutely loving the Mate Xs with GMS fully working, using it alongside my iPhone 11 Pro Max.

I've had a mate Xs for a a few months now, got a original galaxy fold a few days ago and it's a clear downgrade, even with the X's having to side load stuff I would rather keep the Xs
Things I noticed
The galaxy folds crease is just more visible, the galaxy fold doesnt fold flat after some use while my mate Xs still does, the folded screen on the fold is a huge downgrade, the fold has lower screen brightness... So basically to much negatives even considering the position Huawei are in now

I am a fan of Samsung foldables. I've owned them from day one (the zfold 2) and the first Fold since December 2019.
Up until November I had the Zfold2, but a month ago I switched to the Mate XS as soon as I found it at a reasonable decent price and I'm thrilled with it. I find it more beautiful, more seductive, lot more usable as closed... better camera.. everything better than any Fold.
I would make this change again a thousand times because only XS gives me true emotions with the screen is open. About google services..well I don't use banking apps and I arranged very well with alternative apps, indeed I also found something superior, I just miss the PC-smartphone history on Chrome, its bookmarks or apps still unavailable as Waze.

it's nice to read this message actually me too I took the xs because it has more of an effect wow when you unfold it for google I put the gms and freeze the fram and I am satisfied and for google pay bah I pay with my watch.

I would keep it but lack of volte support on Vodafone UK make it unusable in some rural areas.

Anyone still going strong here ?

me always with my mate xs

yup, still keep it run and try to use it everyday

About to reach 2023 and just dropped the Z Fold 4 for my ole good Mate XS. I'm waiting for samsung to make a decent working good looking front screen. My Mate Xs is a phone on it's own without unfolding it so i'm keeping it at least until Fold 5 changes things, if it does.
I'm no longer Google services dependant, most apps i needed are now on Huawei store and others i need i just use an apk.

I still own it,
tonight it updated the security patches to February 2023.
Not bad for a 3 year old phone
Still rules

Pixel 2 xl or mate 10 pro?

About 100 bucks difference
I currently have a mate 10 pro that has a defective battery I am about to return (battery needs to be charged twice a day on a light use) .
But lost between ordering another or go for the pixel 2 xl?
I know huawei has a bad record of updating their phones.
They already released some updates but still no sign of them on ota.
I've had both and pixel 2 XL is much better imo.
The problem that i had with EMUI is app compatibility. When I had the Mate 9 hulu didn't work and google locations wouldn't update. It looks like the Hulu issue was resolved but if you browse the xda mate 10 forums many people are having issues with widgets. I also think the menu interface is still too cluttered. The updates are far and few
I had a mate 10 pro, hardware wise its a better phone in my opinion, nicer shape, I just really didn't like the software if they made a stock android version and got rid of the iOS wannabe software they would be on to a winner...
No persistent notifications on the lockscreen for EMUI was the reason I went back to Pixel phones.

If fast/regular/guaranteed updates are important to you, Pixel is the only game in town.
It's also a question of where you want your private data to go, Shanghai or Mountain View?

There both good. The pixel seems better. But think the mate 10 pro still had some software tweaks to make the battery life better. I never run out of battery by bed time with the pixel. Lowest I get is maybe 30 percent with heavy usage. Could easily last couple days maybe bit more with light usage
With the recent 6P battery/bootloop of death issue (I had to return mine), not sure I'd even want to look at Huawei so soon.

The 5X made by LG also has bootloop issues. I think there was something else there, like the SoC that year had issues, or maybe coincidence that both Huawei and LG had manufacturing issues.
Where are the $299 Nexus 4 phones from a few years ago ... It really sucks to spend this much on a phone these days and have all sorts of issues battery, bootloop, screen, ... I suppose you buy these phones with a credit card that extends the warranty by another 2 years, so on a Pixel 2 you get 2 years from Google + another 2 years from a good credit card and you're covered without buying an extended warranty plan.
So yeah to the OP, don't forget that the Pixel 2 has 2 yrs warranty from Google.

I ordered one and received it today from amazon
Dunno why I decided to search on amazon again and found the phone 130 bucks cheaper
I asked them if they can price match they said no
So I ordered the cheaper one and gonna return the one I received
It was 760 instead of 889
Got both and use both constantly. Pixel 2 Xl as my private phone, Mate 10 Pro as my work one.
The Huawei "feels" better in hand to me. EMUI works well for me. I also like the camera on the Huawei, though the Pixels is better for point and shoot. As for the interface I really don't see the native one is a problem in any way, I simply downloaded the pixel 2 launcher and I see hardly any difference in real day to day use. The AOD isn't that useful as it only shows notifications from Huawei apps, you need to download third party AOD apps to work (Always On AMOLED).
The Pixel is very nice too and I like extras it has. Plain Google android, an Always On Display that actually works, the Shazam-like notifications, the way it is all just integrated.
I think if I was going to have a to choose it would be the Pixel but it wouldn't be a clear cut decision.
As many various tier Huawei phones I have tested & used, I would never buy any phone made by them. Their CPU always feels inferior to the latest Snapdragon, and multitasking is still something that hasn't been solved by them: try running 3 apps and switching between them, and the phone will lag like hell. I was also baffled when I tried to unlock the Mate 10 Pro, and it took 4 seconds to get to the home screen and draw all the icons... I'm sure Huawei makes decent phones and they have their audience, but they never offered anything that would appeal to me... And the camera is a joke for this price, just check this video:
Also, due to my work I've had the "luck" to get to know their ways of working a bit better than most people ever will (no, I never worked for Huawei), and let me tell you that adhering to standards is not their strong suit (not that Apple or Samsung are better at that department either). The Samsung-like spamming of the market with 10-15 devices with nearly identical capabilities is just one example of how the company wants to gain big market share (basically flood the market at a low cost entry point and ramp up the costs down the road to the point where you came out with a significant deficit...) without providing anything but worse quality (terms of code quality, for example).
As you can tell I pretty much despise the whole brand & can't be really objective in the question, but these are personal experiences that made me decide never-ever to buy anything made by Huawei (also, the fact that when I faced them with the reality that their flagship can't run 3 of my apps smoothly without getting sluggish they cut almost all ties with me...). That $100 difference will buy you not just a superb phone, but 2 years warranty, the (current) best camera solution a phone offers out of the box, timely updates for 3 years, a clutter- and bloatware-free Android experience, unlimited Photos storage for original image uploads for 3 years (from account activation on the phone), I even got the free Google Music promotion although I've been a subscriber for years now, just to name a few.

Quoted for the absolute truth. I was trying to make this same decision myself last year, coming from a Mate 9. All in all I did like the Mate 9, it did occasionally have very big lag moments, such as when launching Flipboard, but otherwise it really didn't feel any different from a Snapdragon to me. The camera is one of the weak points, as it has some serious issues with over exposing, and from reading reviews of the Mate 10, I'm not sure they got it right on the 10 either. But my biggest gripe by far would have to be the complete lack of any updates, especially security updates. I have a U.S. Mate 9, and it's still on a security update from June 2017. That plus reviews of the Mate 10 camera not being that great pushed me to get the Pixel 2 XL. The Pixel's camera on full auto is truly in a different league from the Mate 9's, even if you tried to use the Mate 9's manual modes...you can safely believe the hype about the Pixel 2's camera.

Dxo ranks mate 10 pro right after pixel 2
Alot of websites commended the mate 10s camera
So i got to tinker with the pixel 2 for a bit and I miss some features from Huawei
1. Dark mode.
2. I got used to the navigation dock on the mate 10 it made the screen look fuller and nicer to look at lol, another thing in the pixel I can't swap the navigation bar buttons ?
3. Just find it weird that when I click the recent button I have to scroll up to clear all the apps
Other than that the phone is bad ass
The camera is amazing and no bloatware
Hopefully Google would enable these things

Which watch

What's going to be the best watch for Pixel thinking about going with the Galaxy watch but I don't know how well they woul work together
The Galaxy watch works best with a Samsung phone user especially if they are actually using Samsung software. It's got great multiple day battery life, doesn't look cheap.
Ticwatch Pro has it's secondary display so it can go into it's super low power mode. It does very little in that mode and I didn't find it of any use but if your itinerary includes setting off on a 10 day camping trip with 20% watch battery remaining having forgot to charge it's the only smart watch that will still be lit up after that ten days. It does have legitimate all of a long day power though which with Android is really the best you can hope for unless you get the Galaxy watch. Overall this watch is my preferred watch over the 2 I've mentioned so far and the next one.
Fossil sport gives you the latest but still old Wear OS processor. It doesn't help in any way I could discern with performance or battery life. Comes in two sizes but only the bezel gets bigger, screen remains the same. I liked this one but nothing much about it stands out.
So those are the ones I've tried recently. I'd go Ticwatch Pro if choosing among them. The Galaxy is the best hardware hands down but you have a very limited app selection and it works best with Samsung phones which I don't have right now. I don't have much bad to say about the Fossil but don't have much good to say about it either. It lacks the Ticwatch party trick and in my use had slightly worse battery life.

Best watch is the Samsung Galaxy! It will work perfect! I have one.
I am thinking about getting 3a XL. I do love my Nexus 6, but 3a, might be faster.
As much as I prefer wear OS over tizen, I will say that my Galaxy S3 classic works pretty well. The battery life is decent, having Samsung pay is nice without bogging down my phone software, and app support has gotten better. If it weren't for the abysmal battery life and decent selections for decent wear OS devices, I would be on one in a heartbeat. I had the ZTE quartz from T-Mobile, which was actually a pretty great watch for the price, but we all know what happened with ZTE and software updates are non-existent sadly, and it seems 3rd party development has halted entirely.
Tizen is really the only decent software offering right now, considering the hardware it runs on. Hopefully, Google can convince oems to make more decent wear OS devices, but I'm not holding my breath for it, sadly.
Galaxy watch has better battery life over s3. Over anything and is the most water proof.
I got lucky. Almost bought an S3. SO glad I didn't!
Been using my huawei smartwatch2 with 3axl. No issues yet and all notifications seem to be working fine

I will most likely get one very soon. It's in my cart. Still no TWRP. Unicorn ROM is available. Can be rooted. The thing that scares me is the bad reviews on the screen. Dimmer than a regular Pixel and not very good image quality some say.
Android Q beta available for all Pixel devices.
Nasty bug in Q for Samsung Galaxy watch plugin though.

twrp is being worked on and should be released unofficially soon(look in the twrp thread)
the screen is fine tbh and honestly until twrp is out im sticking to rooted stock as its the easiest to deal with, i personally dont have any issues with the screen, its plenty bright outside in direct sunlight and the thing is color calibrated from the factory also image quality meaning pictures? if so then it's literally the same camera module as the pixel 3/xl just without that image processor so snapchat can't use hdr+ enhanced but the google camera can still so its really a non issue
just go to a tmobile store or verizon store or best buy and check the phone out(assuming you are in the states) before buying it yourself, frankly im getting tired of seeing notches and pin holes in displays so i mainly got the 3a xl just because it didnt have those and the fact that its a google phone(so i know its gonna be a decent buy regardless)

Question pairing the pixel 6 with the galaxy watch 4

So it looks like this might be my next phone but I have a few questions
1. Is it still worth it to have my samsung galaxy watch 4? I know there are a few features that you lose if you dont have a samsung device like ECG and body measurement features.
2. Is it going to be better to get the pro instead of waiting til next year to get the s21 ultra because I was thinking about that as well since the price might come down.
1. Yes keep it, you loose very little with this (if anything). You can enable blood pressure and ECG with this (currently running it on OnePlus 8Pro and it works without issues):
How to enable ECG and Blood Pressure features on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
Here's how you can enable ECG and blood pressure monitoring on your Galaxy Watch 4 in all regions, even with non-Samsung phones.
www.xda-developers.com
So just some fiddling around, but you only need to do this once and you're set to go.
2. No one can tell you what is better for you but I can share how I decided to return to Google.
The most important phone feature for me always been smoothness. Long time ago I switched from Nexus 5 to Samsung Note 4. It was supposed to be a step up with the newer processor, but Sammy let me down big time.
I was shook by how much smoother the Nexus was. I was chasing for a better performance for Note 4, so I tried rooting, custom roms etc., but without luck. Nexus 5 was simply much better in that regard.
What I learned about Google phones in the long run:
I was used to getting a poorer and poorer performance from Samsung as the phone aged. With Nexus and Pixels it was always the other way around. In my experience Google phones were not that great when they got released, but in months, with help of updates, they started flying.
I loved the community support around these devices. What most called 'a plain' version of Android, happened to be as rich in functionality as I would want them to be (with help of rooting and some neat apps). Also, Google phones had the reputation of being a compromise choice. E.g. with Pixel 2 people didn't like the screen. Meanwhile I absolutely adored it because I knew there were tools that allowed you to adjust display as you like. If not the community, I would've never learned about this though.
Reviews never called full justice over these devices for some reason. I was rarely finding a review that would justify my experiences with Google phones. It felt like the reviewers were playing around with them for a couple of weeks and then putting them back to the drawer. A Nexus/Pixel in early days without rooting for me seemed like a waste (things have changed now days, I don't see a reason for rooting anymore).
I split ways with Pixel after 2XL. Although it was a really amazing phone, Pixels 3 and 4 didn't seem attractive for me with the price.
I went to OnePlus with 7 PRO which was offering a clean enough OS, smooth performance and insane screen. Really amazing phone.
8 PRO is still ok, but it never felt like a step forwards from 7 PRO (except from camera). Software updates got very slow, i'm not even sure if 8 is supported anymore, lol. I have very little to no hope in regards to the unified OS they are bringing.
I have 0 complaints about Galaxy Tab S7, so I considered Samsung 21 Ultra. I liked it when I got a chance to use it in a store. But after the atrocious experiences with Note 4 and some short time spent with Galaxy 9, 10, I still don't see myself using a Samsung phone.
In Pixel 6 video comments I saw people raging on 21 Ultra for slowness, battery issues so it looks like not much has changed unfortunately.
When I heard about Google working on a chip for Pixel, that got me excited. As long as it's at least comparably as fast as SD 865, but is smooth, I will be more than happy to return to the vanilla Android. Can't lie, I missed it.
Summarizing, if you owned a Pixel before, you should know pretty well what's to expect and whether you liked it or not. If that would be your first Pixel device, just go for it. This year seems to be the best time ever to join #TeamPixel.

You make some really great points. If I can get those features paired with a 6 pro then I'll probably go for it. I don't normally use those features but it's just something about me if I don't get the full of experience of a device I paid $450 for. This does seem like the perfect time to move over to pixel. Battery life means a lot to me and with that 5000mah I'm pretty much sold on it. On top of that if this is anything like what apple is doing with their bionic chip then battery life should be really good.
I'm also not sure if I should do 128gb or 256gb
I plan on using my cool galaxy watch 4 with this badboy device! Cheers
I just pre-ordered mine. 128gb stormy black. Gonna put a dbrand skin on it

I don't know if you've bought the phone yet, but you may want to hold off on that. I've been having problems - the watch (Galaxy Watch 4) and phone (6 Pro) both pair initially just fine. But if I restart my phone, the phone won't reconnect to the watch, and the galaxy wearable app seems to have forgotten the watch. The only way to reconnect them is to reset the watch completely. Considering returning the phone over it.

Considering returning the phone over it.

I have the same setup as you. I don't have this issue at all. Maybe occasionally after a reboot I'll have to go the app and hit connect, but it's quick to do so.
Overall, I think the experience is what I hoped for.

Thanks for the advice. It does seem like a good time to join the Pixel family. Only device I've seen previously is my partner, who has a Pixel 4a, which I've used a bit, and I found it to be a impressive device.
I'll stick with it for now, maybe do a factory reset without restoring from a backup, go in fresh, and maybe that will help with this problem.

Battery life has been strange for me on the device - sometimes it's unbelievably good, other times, it seems to drain quite fast. But I haven't really kept track of my usage on those days, so it could have been something I'm doing sometimes to drain it fast.

It really is dude. You turn on adb debugging on the watch, connect to it via wifi, put in like 3 commands and done. Also, if you're in XDA, this is probably the most simple thing you do to devices.
Adb connect 'ip'
Adb -s install 'ip' watch4.xxx
Adb disconnect 'ip'
Done
I have no issue with pairing. Phone and watch work good together.

General Disappointment the Pixel 6

Well after being excited to get the Pixel 6 Pro with all the hype of best pixel phone in years, i have returned the phone after finding it disappointing. Probably the phone i have been most disappointed with ever, So i have gone back to my Huawei P30 Pro
main issues are battery life, after finding the phone struggling to get through a day on a charge, after googling and finding turning off the 5g and 120hz display improves battery life. WHAT the main features of the phone drain the battery too much, battery life on P30 is 2 days for me constantly (i know peoples usage will vary), but after Lumia phones and Huawei it was like going back to Iphone 3 days barely getting 24hrs on a charge.
also the UI is terrible, how is this an improvement the notification area with the huge tiles take up so much room that you have to scroll to the right to see most of the shortcuts etc. P30 is much more intuitive and fewer steps to do the same action
The Google search bar/ assistant and clock can't be moved or resized so much for customising android, none of these restrictions on P30
Colour theming what a joke to the point of being pointless couldn't pick the colour i wanted and the choice of 4 colour LOL, P30 has a huge colour theming section and is easy pick what colour you want and away to go
You will need a case for the phone it will literally slide off everything, i know a lot pf people fit cases but you wont have any choice with the Pixel 6 or it'll end up in broke
I would go as far to say EMUI 4 was better than android 12 on the Pixel 6, only good point was the camera
Only thing I'd agree with is that Huawei makes some of the best phones and I wish they were sold for US carriers. As for this phone, it's getting better every day for me. Of course there are some annoyances here and there but battery life isn't bad for me. I still have mine on 5g and 120hz and getting 8ish hour SOT with full day use. Mostly Twitter, Reddit and cryptocurrency apps and some YouTube music. The UI I feel takes some learning and adjusting to get used to.

You really should have waited a bit to try a pure aosp build. I found the google [bloat|spy]ware to be bad enough that I couldn't put my sim card in it because it was completely unusable. Running pure aosp built from source and its like a dream.
Under very heavy use since about 7am this morning (its now after 3), I'm still over 70% battery, including leaving 120hz enabled. Not 5g though, my carrier only has LTE for now.
Some of your complaints don't really matter. The quick settings pane for example is a feature of android 12, not the google build, so no matter who sells you the phone, you'll have that eventually anyway.

2021 has been a mediocre year at best for smartphones. Android 11 and 12 forced cpu cycle eating scooped storage sucks.
After the N20U Samsung released nothing I like and their last really great flagship is the N10+ running on Q.
2021, issues with variable rate displays, 5G and scoped storage galore. The usual Samsung Fold display delamination issues. For flagship SD card support you either got to use older Samsung flagships or go Chinese.
The Pixel Pro seems to numerous rude surprises. OK, maybe it's not horrible but not a flagship level device either... it's ok at best. It's user interface is subpar as usual with no substantial speed advantage to show for it. Why not just get an Apple rather than a Pixel at this rate?
I doubt even Samsung can modify Android 11/12 enough to make it user friendly; Pixel barely tried to fix their nightmare OS.
Small wonder Pixel as such a dismal market share... they earned it.

Note 9 owner
Everyone knows the 10 lineup was literally a downgrade in all the ways literally a minor cpu bump and a 3rd camera.
You lost iris scanner, spo2 ,heart rate , headphone jack and sd card slot on certain models.
It was also the mark of samsung making like 4 3/4 different models of phone which had worse hard ware than previous versions unless you get the top top end.
For example the fact screens on the note10 itself are worse than 9.
It literally started the mark of samsung killing off the note line with the making it a glorified Samsung Galaxy with a pen in which case then note 20ultra is worse that the galaxy 20 ultra in a lot of ways.
It's not even ahead of software updates since the note 10 lite uses the same chipset as the s9/n9 so it's easily ported to them.
So yeah the fact you said that means you literally have no clue on the state of it.
Also you think Samsung will simplify it gl they literally need to make a new ui every year because they can't do it right it's improving but still , if you don't like stock android get different launcher.
At least we know we going to get software support for a long time and direct also support
Phone is Awesome! Best purchase ever!

I read a lot. The Pixel UI... well each to his own is the best I can say.
The N20U has display issues caused by the variable frequency, the N10+ color rendering exceeds the N20U, S21U and likely the P6pro.
I have extremely good color perception, top 1% so I find color aberrations annoying with displays. The 10+ is near spot on even after two years of heavy usage. I'll do a color test between the new and old one to see how tight the calibration is just for kicks sometime.
The N20U is running on R, enough said.
Some of both have 5G, not worth the increased battery usage. This problem persists in most of the newest devices. Variable rate displays, 5G and especially scooped storage are not mature technologies and continue to underperform.
Stats with pics... or it never happened.
Here's what a stock N10+ Snapdragon/P variant did just today with a 4300mAh battery. About one hour is watching utube vids, the rest browsing. The N10+ isn't even breaking a sweat...
The entire pre-order mess has soured my excitement for the phone. Google showed early November delivery, now shows mid January. It seems to cut costs, Google went with outdated and inferior parts and made some strange sacrifices. Samsung always gives it's competitors last year's display tech. Android 12 feels largely incomplete, much like hipster aesthetics were put before functional changes. I have been excited to get a flagship that has a clean base, can be rooted and built upon, but if the hardware is subpar, it may not be worth it.
With Samsung phones, I've debloated and modded almost every element to my liking without even needing root. Custom themes, custom fonts, custom clock styles and placement, always on display scheduling, ability to hide the navigation bar, and endless GoodLock modules to fine tune the UI are all things stock Android 12 can't do. That said, it's always bugged me that Samsung phones have roughly 300 preloaded system apps, where stock Android has about 100. I'm debating whether to cancel the P6P preorder and wait for the S22 Ultra.

I was comparing my 2 N10+'s, one running on 9, the other 10. The 10 variant has dozens of small apks that show on the package disabler, but they're not bloatware. Samsung deliberately moded Android 10 to make it more user friendly and functional. It runs very well.
The S21 isn't anything I want but it shreds the P6pro.
However both are having display issues. I would at least wait for the dust to settle...
Hold out until Samsung gets their act together again if you can... it may take a year or two. Latter 2022 or perhaps 2023. I wouldn't hold my breath... it may take until 2024 to arise from the ashes of mediocre and lack of features.

To be fair, on a Samsung, one doesn't really need root. So much debloating can be done using ADB. Many developers have found ways to utilize Samsung's theme engine and font engine to customize the phone however one prefers. I installed an AOSP theme using Hex Installer that made the UI look 95% stock.

Question Pixel 2 XL (Android 11) to Pixel 6 Pro (Android 12) feels like a major slap in the face

My Pixel 2 had a beautiful clear white display, the Pixel 6 has a slight pink tint at certain viewing angles and colors look washed out. The phones speaker quality is terrible in comparison. And now we get to a big one. And it's not the Pixel 6 fault but Android12...
Scoped Storage
I'm sure this has been discussed but I am a gamer. And I like to be able to play all my purchased games and carry over all my save data.
Just about none of the Rockstar games work cause they haven't been updated in years. Now knowing developers are lazy why does Google make such drastic changes knowing these issues won't be solved any time soon if ever.
Meanwhile Rockstar is allowed to keep selling and making Millions off of old ports that don't run on the latest operating system for over a year now. This is wrong! On both Google and Roskstars part.
Yesterday I had to use Fastman92 to update most of GTA collection just to get back up and running again on Android-Unprotected.
---------------------
Now that my rant is over. is it normal even with root that I can't access certain game files in Android - Data?
Lets take Minecraft. I Iused to just plug in my External Mohang folder into Android - Data, start up the app and was good to go. Now that doesn't work. I have come up with creative workarounds but what is the proper way we are supposed to take data from one Android device to another with scoped storage?
I'm only addressing one part for now.
I would respectfully disagree that Rockstar's old games not working on new devices or Android versions is Google's fault at all. It is just not reasonable to expect everything to keep working without the developer updating the software. It is solely Rockstar's fault.
It would tie Google's hands behind their backs to make sure all old software still worked without modification. There would be so many issues caused by this that I hesitate to even start listing them.
I understand the frustration but let the blame lie solely with the developer.

What if we compromise.
Updates centrainly have to be made. While I don't see how scoped storage in most cases of Android games in the Android - Data folder are needed. I'll skip that for now.
Google should take all Rockstar games off the market untill they patch them. I think Rockstars last games update came almost 3 years ago in 2019.
Google heavily profits (50 Billion a year) on app sales, a good portion of which comes from games. Both Companies are profiting on broken apps. And that is wrong
Google Will Start Removing Outdated Apps From Google Pay Store Starting November 1: Why This Is Important - News18
This comes as a security measure from Google as apps on Google Play Store will be required to adhere to latest restrictions and permissions.
www.news18.com
The blog post from Google said that starting November 1, 2022, the company will remove those apps from the Google Play Store that don’t target an API level within two years of latest major Android version. It said that the apps will not be available for discovery or installation for new users with devices running Android OS versions higher than apps’ target API level.

By that point Rockstar will have put out the brand new remastered edition and charge everyone all over again
But that's great. So hopefully Rockstar has untill November
The trouble with the above, though, is the other side. That favorite app of yours that still works perfectly but hasn't been updated in too many years, will no longer auto-restore along with other Play Store apps, if you use Google's restore, since the app won't be in the store anymore. Unless Google were actually nice and would allow apps to auto-restore on first setups of new devices - just not allow the app to be visible in the Play Store to anyone who doesn't already have the app.
You can still get the apk elsewhere (or have it backed up manually), but still. So either way, there will be complaints.

Out of curiosity - how bad is the Google Pixel 6's speaker compared to the Pixel 2? I have never had a Pixel device and I am still considering a Pixel 6 Pro - but things like speaker performance, display quality (more brightness than color accuracy), and earpiece volume (I still use my phone phone to make/receive calls) are important to me.
My OnePlus 7 Pro tics most of the above off (the brightness could be a bit brighter (it gets the job done in bright sunlight - but still...) and the speakers are more than adequate for me) - but the fiasco that is now Opp... I mean OnePlus has pushed me to consider either a Google or a Samsung phone for my next device.
I had a Pixel 2XL then OnePlus 7 pro and now a Pixel 6 pro.
Tbh, the move from OP7P feels more of a lateral move than an upgrade. Some things are better on each but if I weigh it all, it's kind of a toss. P6P should be faster, but I don't really game so I don't see it. Speaker quality on the P6P I think is fantastic. I don't feel the P2XL was better, but not really worse either.
At the end of the day, I have toddler and an infant and I prefer to have the best photo quality to keep those memories at the best quality I can get. That and I paid $800 for a new phone so I gotta use it haha.
After some tweaks the battery life on the P6P is phenomenal vs OP7P as well. Though the OP phone is older it's tough to ding things too much. The Pixel 2XL was an amazing phone and set up a lot of success for Pixels overall. This is Google's first major change since that phone. It's had it's share of bugs for sure, but I still love mine.
Developers like Rockstar hold Android back. Android pushed off scoped storage, something that was desperately needed, for years because of developers like Rockstar. I have no sympathy for developers of games that don't work at this point.
Is it wrong that Rockstar is still selling the game? Absolutely. But don't blame Android devs - this was a long time coming. Leave reviews for the games, return them, charge back, do whatever you need to get through to Rockstar - but don't blame Android.

I completely understand the need for the best photo quality and the OP7P (hell OP phones in general) camera quality leaves much to be desired. From what I have been keeping up with on the OP9P and the OP10P - I don't think that there's much more that OP has done to correct its lackadaisical photography approach.
Thanks for the insight especially as someone who had the exact phone that I am currently using and who has the phone that I am currently considering moving to!
I got pixel 6 pro in march this year I love the speakers but then again I play metal and rock lol I did have a pixel 2 xl and remember the speakers on that was good as well
This thread was a bit aof a rant. My main complaint was scoped storage.
It took me about an hour to update the softwware, unlock bootloader, and root.
It took about 30 minutes to try and get my Grim Fandango save game file to integrate in Android - Data and that was like A WOW moment for me. Like I never thoght I would see what used to be considered basic copy and pasting of files become difficult.
I don't like this new direction.
----------------------------
Side note I have ocd and about 25 games. I have 100% save game files for each one. So It means a lot to me to be able to take hundreds of hours of work and port it over from my older devices to my new one. This upgade made that process the most challenging yet

I understand what you're saying, but almost all game devs update their games for the first couple years and run away. Games are what propel sales on the Google play store. Google (as a middle man) has made a ton of money off Rockstar, they have not held them back.
KOTOR 2's touch screen stopped working about a year ago on pixel devices. People begged Aspyr for a fix. One never came. Just the other day I tried the game again (on Android 11 and 12) and it was working. That means a Google app update fixed the issue.
Why can't Google grandfather older titles in without the need for scoped storage? What security bennefit is provided by GTA 3 having it's Android - Data files proteced?
So we bought a Pixel 4a 5G for my girlfriend 's mother. And she didn't like it so we got her an iPhone 13 and got the Pixel back. Comparing it to my 6 pro it's actually faster? Anddd the pictures are crisper? Likeeee wth is that.

Any app that has data that can potentially be manipulated by another app is a security issue. Even though it's a game, a rogue app could manipulate its data in a way that ends up giving hackers access to your device and/or other data on your device.

Google's pixel phone are lemons... Coming from Oneplus this is shame
My dream is that OnePlus and Google team together to make a phone (like Google did with HTC), the refinement, fluidity and speed of OnePlus is something I haven't experienced in any other phone, android or apple, combined that with Google's vanilla OS and you'd have a true flagship phone

I can certainly see every 2 years a new remastered remastered edition coming out with the only difference is increasing the target API

So I didn't want to make another post but about a month ago Rockstar updated for the first time in 3 years GTA 3 and Vice City... Only problem was both of them already worked lol
