Hi,
I've had my M9 for a couple of weeks now, and slowly getting it to work how I want it to. One thing nagging me is this weird issue I have with waking the device from sleep.
I have tried to disable all the gesture/smart wake features (double tap the screen, etc). The issue I'm having seems to relate to the light and/or proximity sensor. It seems (and I haven't been able to find any info on this, online or on the phone) that there is a feature which will enable the device to wake up when being picked up or taken out of my pocket. This doesn't always work, but sometimes it does. When I pull my phone from my pocket, it will sometimes wake up. When I glide my finger over the front camera & light sensor, it will sometimes wake up. This is a minor annoyance, as I would like to only be able to wake my device by hitting the power button.
It gets really annoying when these 'gesture' wakes start to interfere with the power button wake. For example (and this is happening more often than not), when I pull my phone out of my pocket, the phone is off, then I hit the power button once, and the phone still doesn't wake. Hitting the power button a second time will wake the device. It seems to me that the smart waking is some how interfering with the manual waking.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior?
Any suggestions for a solution?
Thanks a lot for any help.
This is really odd considering the M9 doesn't support air gestures. Sorry, I have no solution, but is it possible you may have installed an app that may be causing this?
I would think two button push would be the normal, otherwise you could accidentally hit it once and turn the screen on. Do you have Ambient display and pocket detection all turned off ?
Gravity Screen in the play store gives you total control of all that stuff
That for the replies guys.
Clsa, there is no way to disable ambient display & pocket detect because those features do not exist on the M9 (at least... Not that I have found). That's what is bugging me.
I don't think the 2 button press is normal. I've never had to do it on previous phones.
Fernand - not sure if it is another app causing it. I think I have no extra apps installed compared to my last phone.
I just tried Gravity Screen, and it seems to just give me the ability to enable all the features I want to disable.
Any other suggestions?

Settings / Display & Gestures / Ambient display (Wake screen when device is picked up or notifications arrive)
Pocket Detection is part of some Rom Tweaks (insertcoin & viperOne if i remember right)
Hi again, that option is not available on my phone. Do you see it on your M9?
I don't have a custom ROM. Not rooted either.

Yes I have it, but I'm on LeeDroid right now. He adds so much stuff i forget whats "custom" and whats stock
Got the same issue
The power button will ignore the first push while standing by for a long time. Thought it might be caused by apps like greentify?
Hi Ducati, is that a fact or is that just how you understand it? Seems strange that that would be intentional. But it definitely seems to be the case.
I do not have greenify installed either.
Do you get similar behaviour on your One?
After a bit more testing. I can confirm that there are some sort of air gestures on this device. I can wave my finger in front of the front light sensor/camera, and the device will wake.
This doesn't happen all the time, I am not always able to reproduce this. But right now, it is happening. Can anyone else reproduce this?

I have the same issue on my M9. Glad I found this thread. Thought my power button was defective.
I can't activate any gestures by waving my hand.
I think it's happening mostly when waking from deep sleep.
I know it's an old thread, but I just installed CyanogenMod 12.1 and I guess my google-fu is rusty. I find that if I hit the power button in quick succession (double click) it turns off the phone. Anyone know how I can stop this?
By quick succession I mean multiple times within 20 seconds
Hey! I got my oneplus 5T two days back. Everything is perfect just that the screen off gestures don't seem to be working. As in, I'm not able to wake the phone up by double tap the screen option. Also, the alphabet gestures for flashlight, camera etc are not working as well. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Do you activate them? First I also thought they don't work until i saw, that every single gesture was deactivated. Like "draw an o - none".

I have the same issue when trying to use a circle to turn on the flashlight.
That's strange.Restart it maybe helped.
I got the phone today, any information why double tap to wake is not possible. or activated ?
I have no idea, but I would also very much like to know. I miss my double tap...!
Same here, just received the phone: Quality seems quite good but I'm surprised this basic functionality (double tap to wake) is not available.
From what I read, if it's not implemented at kernel level then no apps can bring it to the phone ...
If anyone has more info, that would be great!
As an alternative this app can be tried. It wakes the device up by wave gesture.
It must be checked if Mi A2 Lite still goes to deep sleep mode and doesnt stay awake when app is active (hint by dev that some devices have problems)
Also it must be checked if Fingerprint is working without any issues like re-enter PIN after fingerprint unlock
Same problem, got the phone last saturday... it seems that the oreo version has it but our phone's didn't...
This ROM is extremely light so they removed most of the common features.
Let's just wait for a semi-official Lineage release for A2L.
Or you can wait until someone builds a kernel for this device. Many Kernels enable tap to wake functionally.

I thought the finger print sensor would make tap to wake useless lol.
I got the phone 3 days ago. Double-tap to wake works from day one.
I really wish I could turn it OFF.
Ambient Light is Off, TalkBalk is Off but phone still wakes up in my pocket all the time.
Anyone know how to turn this feature Off please?

Strangely, on my A2 Lite, double tap only wakes up the screen. Double tapping when screen is awake does nothing at all.
I emailed Xiaomi Support about this, asking how I could disable the waking up. The reply came from Xiaomi Support Malaysia:
Go to the Settings - Select Accessibility - Select advanced settings - Turn on the pocket mode option
I replied, "There is no Advanced Settings under Accessibility. There is also no setting available when I search for pocket or double or tap twice."
Their advice was to backup and perform a Factory Reset, which I think is nonsense.

*#*#6484#*#* line #1
so there are 2 version of A2 Lite which has and has no double tap to wake, we have to accept it as they are, but which is better or worse?
Hello, I have 2 Nokia 6.1 in my family, one has the double tap to wake and it works perfectly, but the other one dosen't work... even if I unchek and check again the setting in display settings, when I try it it never works. But it's working if I tap like 3 or 4 times without stop it will wake up. but 2 tap never work. ( i DON'T have a screen protector or case, nothing (on both))
Do you know why? Do you have this problem? My Nokia 6.1 doesn't have a double-tap but a triple-tap (or more) to wake lol... :crying:
the real question is, is it a hardware issue?
Thanks guys!
I have experienced it too, when the phone is inactive for longer times it's harder to wake it up that way, but when notification comes it wakes up instantly with 2 taps.
It's very weird, I hope it's not a hardware tuchscreen issue!
I just tested tap to wake on my previous phone (Xperia Z3) and the 2 tap to wake world perfectly anytime, but with my 6.1 it's like there is an issue...
Yes, something is definitely wrong, but maybe it has to be that way so battery lasts longer or something, because it works fine when you tap it right after using it,
but when it's not being used for a while then it starts to disobey.
Maybe its related to the fingerprint sensor or unlock patern
the phone seems to go into a deep sleep if it's been locked for a while, I guess this is why the battery life is good - I found when this happens double tap doesn't work and certain apps effectively close themselves if they're not actively doing anything.
Guys, I don't speak with just my Nokia 6.1, I have 2 Nokia 6.1 in front of me.
Both have fingerprint for unlock, both 100%, both are the same, both with tap to wake enabled...
When I double tap together there is one who NEVER wake up... except when I X tap like a dumb, like "taptaptaptaptap..." and then it understand that someone double tap after 5-10 times lol... but the other one works everytime (EVERY) prefect...
I will maybe make a video

Same problem here. If the phone is sleeping for like 10+ mibutes, the first double tap does absolutely nothing, I have to redo it a 2nd time. If it sleeps a minute or two it is working first try.
Is there anyway to turn off the screen with the home button and then be able to use the fingerprint scanner to unlock?
Advanced features > side key.
For the locking part, there is an app called home button actions, but good lock would give you more functions , as to unlock, there is a double tap option, as LG devices have had since some time
I really appreciate the answers but still looking for an easy way to long press the home button to turn off the screen and have it turn back on with the fingerprint sensor.

Nova - gestures, home button, screen lock.
Always on display - active, fingerprint unlock turned on.
I think this is the closest you can get. I don't think the fingerprint is active while the screen's completely off.
If you want the screen completely off, you'll have to use the lift to wake option, that way it turns on as soon as you pick up your phone. You'll have to turn that option on in the phone settings.
Edit: "Nova".

A single press turns off the screen and pressing the fingerprint sensor when the screen is off turns on the phone. You can set a long press to bring up power off menu.
Just press the power button and the screen will turn off. The easiest way
You can also use "good lock" and the navstar plugin to create a power button shortcut.
Double Tap apk
I use the Double Tap apk. Simple double tap anywhere on the screen to turn t off.
May not work with Android Q though as it's an over lay... works perfectly with Pie.

Do you have a link for that app?
I use the app "DTSO" from the Google Play Store & it works fine on every device mfg except for Samsung. It works on the initial setup, but, subsequent attempts & it does nothing.
On all other devices, I'm able to use a DTSO widget for double tap, on & off.,with no problems.

If you're running on Android Q I don't think it will work as it's an overlay. Uses no data; well behaved.

One of the reasons I'm not going to Q. I have a couple overlay apps that work well and I use.
The added "security" is a bad joke at a high cost to functionality.

Part, if not all of that, is a Samsung limitation, the app I'm using, DTSO, is similar to the one you referenced, it's an overlay/widget & it works just fine on my stock/unrooted OnePlus 7 Pro & it's running Android 10/Q.
The DTSO app never worked properly pre-dating Android 10 on any Samsung devices I've owned, & I tried other similar apps & the same results.
Regardless, it's a head-scratcher as to why Samsung doesn't build in the functionality, a la LG, perhaps it's a Knox thing limiting it, IDK......

Another option is One Handed Operation Plus. You can set gesture control screen off and much more. I wuv this apk. Up to 6 different discreet switch zones and up to 6 switches per zone. Very low power consumption and reliable. Perfect companion to fill in those unused curve screen zones, a brilliant apk.

Since I'm not using a screen lock the double tap on/off is great. Samsung marketing is like a box of rabid gerbils; absurd and unpredictable.
However when it comes to unrooted phone customization, Samsung is hands down the best.
A plain Jane Apple would bore me to death...

The long stroke gestures aren't as reliable.
Useful for Apks that get inadvertently triggered like flashlight, ha-ha.
Occasionally it gets triggered when cut and pasting but it integrates in pretty well. Adjusting the zone size and placement can help prevent this.
Plus you can have the touch zone indicator any color or transparency setting you like or none al all.
Great touch for custom themes.
Making use of the customization Samsung apps takes the Note 10+ to a completely new level.
Outstanding... and very resource/battery friendly.
