Is there anyway to turn off the screen with the home button and then be able to use the fingerprint scanner to unlock?
Advanced features > side key.
For the locking part, there is an app called home button actions, but good lock would give you more functions , as to unlock, there is a double tap option, as LG devices have had since some time
I really appreciate the answers but still looking for an easy way to long press the home button to turn off the screen and have it turn back on with the fingerprint sensor.

Nova - gestures, home button, screen lock.
Always on display - active, fingerprint unlock turned on.
I think this is the closest you can get. I don't think the fingerprint is active while the screen's completely off.
If you want the screen completely off, you'll have to use the lift to wake option, that way it turns on as soon as you pick up your phone. You'll have to turn that option on in the phone settings.

A single press turns off the screen and pressing the fingerprint sensor when the screen is off turns on the phone. You can set a long press to bring up power off menu.
Just press the power button and the screen will turn off. The easiest way
You can also use "good lock" and the navstar plugin to create a power button shortcut.
Double Tap apk
I use the Double Tap apk. Simple double tap anywhere on the screen to turn t off.
May not work with Android Q though as it's an over lay... works perfectly with Pie.

I use the app "DTSO" from the Google Play Store & it works fine on every device mfg except for Samsung. It works on the initial setup, but, subsequent attempts & it does nothing.
On all other devices, I'm able to use a DTSO widget for double tap, on & off.,with no problems.

If you're running on Android Q I don't think it will work as it's an overlay. Uses no data; well behaved.

Yeah, too bad. Just checked the date of the last update to that app, been a good while, pre-dating Android 10 (Q).

One of the reasons I'm not going to Q. I have a couple overlay apps that work well and I use.
The added "security" is a bad joke at a high cost to functionality.

Part, if not all of that, is a Samsung limitation, the app I'm using, DTSO, is similar to the one you referenced, it's an overlay/widget & it works just fine on my stock/unrooted OnePlus 7 Pro & it's running Android 10/Q.
The DTSO app never worked properly pre-dating Android 10 on any Samsung devices I've owned, & I tried other similar apps & the same results.
Regardless, it's a head-scratcher as to why Samsung doesn't build in the functionality, a la LG, perhaps it's a Knox thing limiting it, IDK......

Another option is One Handed Operation Plus. You can set gesture control screen off and much more. I wuv this apk. Up to 6 different discreet switch zones and up to 6 switches per zone. Very low power consumption and reliable. Perfect companion to fill in those unused curve screen zones, a brilliant apk.

Since I'm not using a screen lock the double tap on/off is great. Samsung marketing is like a box of rabid gerbils; absurd and unpredictable.
However when it comes to unrooted phone customization, Samsung is hands down the best.

The long stroke gestures aren't as reliable.
Useful for Apks that get inadvertently triggered like flashlight, ha-ha.
Occasionally it gets triggered when cut and pasting but it integrates in pretty well. Adjusting the zone size and placement can help prevent this.
Plus you can have the touch zone indicator any color or transparency setting you like or none al all.
Great touch for custom themes.
Making use of the customization Samsung apps takes the Note 10+ to a completely new level.
Outstanding... and very resource/battery friendly.

I was searching for a way to make Tasker wake phone when I pick it up, so I just have to at it to unlock it. In looking into this, I discovered Gravity Screen, which amongst other things, can wake your phone when you pick it up, straight to Face Unlock. It seems to work well but I'm not sure of the impact on battery. I'm not using it to lock the screen... Really only using it for the one thing.

I've been using this app on my last two phones in order to be able to double tap the home screen on my launcher (Action Launcher) to turn off the screen, WITHOUT locking the phone. For some reason though, this no longer works on the OP5T, double tapping just simply won't trigger the screen off shortcut. Really disappointed in this, are you able to get this to work on yours?
I do also use its proximity sensor feature so that it automatically turns the screen on upon removal from my pocket, and it turns the screen back off once I put the phone back into my pocket, which triggers the angle needed to turn the screen off. That feature still works as intended, and better yet, preps the screen for the face unlock. And as far as I can tell, hardly uses any extra battery.

Hmmm... I use Nova Launcher and I use the double tap to lock the phone. I've never wanted it to not lock. I wasn't aware that there is a double tap action in Gravity Screen? I'll have a look.

It's not really within Gravity Screen itself, you'd have to use the launcher to set up the double tap on home screen to a shortcut. From there, you can pick one of Gravity Screen's shortcuts that allow you to either just turn off the screen, or do a persistent off screen, where you have to use the power button to bring it back on. I believe the problem I had with using the double tap to lock screen feature built into the launchers is that it forces you to have to enter in a password afterwards...face unlock or fingerprint do not work.

Hmmm. Not true with Nova. I double tap to lock and I can use fingerprint to unlock. However, I believe that I requires root for this lock method. Do you have root?

Nope, I don't have root. I did try the same shortcuts with Nova, and it didn't work there either.
have used the app on my old OPO.. now on 5T it's just perfect.. just pick up the phone.. and prepare for landing on homescreen without any tap or button press

As an alternative this app can be tried. It wakes the device up by wave gesture.
It must be checked if Mi A2 Lite still goes to deep sleep mode and doesnt stay awake when app is active (hint by dev that some devices have problems)

This ROM is extremely light so they removed most of the common features.

I really wish I could turn it OFF.
Ambient Light is Off, TalkBalk is Off but phone still wakes up in my pocket all the time.

As it turns out, this phone comes with two types of display CSOT & EBBG.On csot, the double tap works, but it can not be turned off, and on ebbg it does not work.

Strangely, on my A2 Lite, double tap only wakes up the screen. Double tapping when screen is awake does nothing at all.
I emailed Xiaomi Support about this, asking how I could disable the waking up. The reply came from Xiaomi Support Malaysia:
Go to the Settings - Select Accessibility - Select advanced settings - Turn on the pocket mode option​
I replied, "There is no Advanced Settings under Accessibility. There is also no setting available when I search for pocket or double or tap twice."
Their advice was to backup and perform a Factory Reset, which I think is nonsense.

The orientation of volume keys and that damn bixby button that i had to create a samsung account to disable it. While powering the device i need to grab the other side with my fingers and squeeze which the volume keys are

Found an option called smart stay. enabled that and found lift to wake option..

I end up hitting the power button to turn the screen on it gets turned on by seeing a face right after that I hit the button and it Powers off this is in a matter of seconds. can't break a habit of powering on the screen with the power button. And that's if the face recognition works. Sometimes it doesnt turn on. There is a way to disable this but face rec to unlock the phone has to be enabled, defeats the purpose.

When you grab the phone watching something horizontal, the palm covers the bottom speaker.

i find myself double tapping on the screen, i see the button as an example get tapped & button gets like shaded as if pressed, gotta tap again.
The clipboard, select all moves from the original place and jumps to "more" for more clipboard options.
the cursor upside down gps logo drag is stupid, draws up a magnifying glass, very irritating.
voice to text is just bad.
Some times highlight something, the clipboard does not popup, gotta grab the page n scroll it, clipboard pops up.
Google suggestions & auto correction sucks.
Battery sucks.
No screen protector, holding down on a field to paste, gotta hold field 2 or three times for paste clipboard pops up.

The only issues I am having with Android 10 is AT&T not knowing how to properly roll out an update before getting rid of all the bugs.
Last Pass is finally usable on Android 10. Not sure why your having problems with it.....

I have been Android user since the beginning and have a 2nd device which has been an iPhone for 4 years.
Android is superior to iOS in many many ways. The thing is, for the average Joe, the person who will use Verizon's Message+ app just because it was installed, for this user iOS is a better option. Simply works and also simple... no carrier crap.
I know a lady, had the IPhone 6, but really liked the look of the S7 or S8 , cant remember which, she only had it for a month, but she is like theres too much stuff on this to understand, so she went back to iPhone, then decided the IPhone was boring and migrated back to the S9.
As for performance, my partner's friend has the latest iPhone and when they are on a call together in messenger her friend keeps dropping out, my partner has the Samsung A50 because she dosent like curved edges. There never seems to be issues with other people in messenger.
And i think most governments use iPhones because they can't be modified by the average person. And this is why apple sales get their quota, government organizations and Reporter's. Even Mr Trumpty prefers his Samsung over IPhone.
This thread is just weird. If there are multiple apps that handle the same call on Android then you are presented with a prompt by the OS to select a default app to handle that function and then going forward that app will be the one to answer the call when an action triggers that function so I don't understand how this user is getting multiple clipboard apps getting triggered by the clipboard function.

LOLWUTT? Just take the phone back and get something else because clearly you don't have a single clue what you're doing or you're trolling.
Only complain I have is that my 3-4 sot equates to 60-80% usage of the battery. I've cleared cache, put most apps to sleep, no gos, no wifi (at work no wifi) no media except Spotify to and from work (1hr total) no nothing autosync.
I'm sick of it. Makes me miss my old phones more because I could leave those things on and get 2 days avg out of them before charging, and that includes watching Netflix, Hulu, YouTube or my Plex server

There is an option in settings > biometrics and securtity> face id > "stay in lock screen" after the phone is unlocked by face-unlock.
You just toggle that switch on.
If you toggle this on, next time you press the power button, the phone will get into the lock screen, it will unlock (if it reads your face), but it will stay in lock screen (so as you can read your notifications etc.). You will have to scroll up to get into the home screen.
I suppose that's what you want to do, correct?

I recently installed a new fx30 battery in my moto x pure edition, I got more life in a day than this. thats with "android 10" optimized bat, adaptive power saving and have apps to be put to sleep, setup.

Can you please explain what you are trying to do?
You want to press the power button and not get into home screen, but stay in Lock screen, correct?
If you don't enable face id, it will not unlock and take you to home screen directly. It will stay in lock screen till you unlock it either by the fp scanner or the pin etc.
If you want to have face id enabled, but not get into home screen directly, you toggle the switch I told you in my previous post.
So what is it that you want to do?
He's trying hard to troll, you just covered every other sensible option.
I owned Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro before, which also has an on-screen fingerprint reader. One very neat feature of it was that you could just press your finger on where the reader is when the screen is off -- the phone springs up already unlocked.
On P6P I need to either press a button or tap first to turn the screen on. Only then can I press the finger to scan.
Is this configurable somewhere or maybe moddable?
The phone should awake automatically, once you grab the phone - as long as you have AoD enabled.
My use case is often to unlock the phone just lying on the table without grabbing or moving it. It indeed reacts to me when grabbing, but it would be nice to just press on the sensor and have it unlocked.

Again, as long as you have AoD enabled, the phone will wake the FP the moment you touch the sensor. I just tried it out a couple of times myself. The phone is lying flat on it's back, AoD is on (FP symbol is active above the battery % at the bottom) and I just lay my finger on the scanner and it unlocks, without having to move the phone, take it in my hand or anything like that.

Even with AOD off you can select tap to check under gestures and a slight tap will wake the phone for the FPR.
Sorry, you are right -- I didn't have AoD enabled before (I messed up what AoD means ). Still, this is not quite the same feature I used to have:
* AoD drains battery and I don't like the screen being always on;
* Tap to Check works, but you need to do this additional tap (then up the finger and press on the reader). Just placing your finger on top of fingerprint reader and having the phone unlocked was more convenient. It's also kinda slow -- if you just quickly tap and then place your finger on the reader, it often won't work (the screen won't light up or the reader won't start).
Guess there's no such functionality at the moment, so I'll continue using Tap to Check.

You could use AODNotify, which, besides giving useful notification features since we don't have a notification light on this P6P, also has two options, and I use both: 1) To completely minimize AOD, so it at minimum doesn't show as much on the screen, and 2) there's an option in AODNotify you can enable with ADB for an experimental low power mode, which effectively turns off AOD unless there's a notification that activates AODNotify.
I use it this way and I use the fingerprint reader with the screen completely off all the time.
There are other but potentially more complex solutions others have used here regarding automation apps like Tasker. If you search the P6P section for mentions of Tasker, then you'd probably find details reasonably fast if you were interested in going down that road.
AOD uses 6% battery for me over the course of 24 hrs. To me the convenience of the notifications and FPS make this more than reasonable.
Unless you have an unreliable electricity supply and you have to meticulously control your battery I can't see it having any meaningful impact.

Interesting! I do have such times (during travels and/or long hikes), but that's still less than I expected. Perhaps I'll give it a try.

Is there a thread or group for AODNotify to ask questions so I don't go OT here? I just installed it and I like it so far. Obviously I'll have to pay for it once I decide to keep it but the adb commands you speak of, is there a way to turn them off if you decide to? And when you say AOD minimal on screen, what do you mean? Ok so I went OT for a bit.

Bro, I was wondering why it would only work after I tapped the screen. Once the screen is on it works on the 1st try Everytime! I don't like AoD either... Guess I'll keep tapping the screen...

Or use AODNotify, like I linked to (in this section) in the post above yours. Enable two options and still technically have AOD on but you won't ever see it unless you get a notification, and even that is minimized.

I too had the same phone but it was named as Redmi K20 pro that has this fingerprint scanner that works even when the display is off. But not on this new Pixel 6 pro, I think google should make use of that feature!!

AODNotify Settings / General / at the top choose "Don't show", and at the bottom, after you do the necessary ADB command, choose "Power saving mode".
OP originally asked if there's a way to have the fingerprint scanner function while the screen is off, and that's till what I want. Is that possible? I don't like AOD or pick up to wake or tap to wake, I like my screen to be off and then I like it to be unlocked and I don't like anything in between, or any delay in unlocking that can be avoided.

With AODNotify's options enabled, the screen is fully off and then when I use the fingerprint reader - obviously the reader area of the screen lights up because it needs to, but then it goes directly to unlocked.

yeah, i know i have an issue, so clarifications aside, y really really heate to touch the power button to lock the phone, so i tried the accesibility icon/menu to lock the phone without physical contact, but i really think unfortunatelly is a joke.
I sooo much miss the OP launcher feature to double tap home screen lo lock the phone.
i know is my thing, i know is me afraid of the button to break, and taking into consideration that i give intensive use to the phone, that was always a concern i had, which disappeared the five years y used OP.
Can some one please give me some comfort words about using the physical button or adice me a good app to easily lock the phone.

Rooted, I use CleanSlate custom kernel's S2S (Sweep to Sleep) to lock the screen and turn it off. Works everywhere including the lock screen.
The kernel doesn't even require root for most of it's features, just need an unlocked bootloader and follow the directions to flash it.
I use Nova launcher and use the to double tap to lock feature.

The only problems with that are: 1) that it only works on the home screen (and if you have a spot void of icons to double-tap in), and if I remember correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) 2) if you're not rooted, then its only choice is to use accessibility services to lock the screen and turn it off - but the caveat of that is that to unlock then requires your primary method to unlock (pin, etc) so the fingerprint reader won't be able to be used to unlock when you've locked with that option.
With root at least, if you have Nova's root option chosen to lock, it's then a normal lock so you can still use the fingerprint reader after to unlock.

Just remember that you don't necessarily need root for that. Only an unlocked bootloader so that you could flash it, although unlocking the bootloader, if you don't already have it unlocked, will factory reset your device. Just making sure you know your options.
I swear by Nova Launcher Prime, too - I just like to be able to lock from any app and screen that I'm on, plus I find it works more reliably in the kernel.

been using the accesibility menu, and any unlock method works, actually.
im not 100% sure to install nov launcher though

I use the power button
I use the swipe up option on one of my folders on the home screen using Nova Launcher. Also have long press to lock screen on Vivid Nav Gesture app bottom left trigger which can be triggered on any screen.

Oops...yes you do. Sorry about that, I missed that you aren't rooted.
Could also use Swiftly Switch app, I believe there is a free version. Its a side swipe bar basically with lots of options
I use just the accessibility option in Nova and on the home screen, I double tap and the screen shuts off and locks the phone, then I pick my phone up and lock screen wakes up and I use my thumb to unlock phone.

yeah works perfectly fine for with double tap to lock screen, pick up to wake or double tap and use my thumb print then unlock with my thumb.

This is the method I use on my unrooted Note 20 Ultra. With fingerprint and face unlock to unlock. No issues.

Yeah, old habit from the Samsung Galaxy S2 and their power button that was common to go bad (and did under warranty).
Cant you just set the screen timeout to 15 seconds and the phone to lock immediately after the screen goes off?
