Verizon Note 4 refuses to root! - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just received a Verizon Note 4 from a friend which had a stock, untampered with v6.0 on it.
I downgraded it to 5.1.1 and have been trying for over 2 days now to get it to root. I have KingOroot and Kingroot both and most times it says root was successful but the root checker says it wasn't. I have tried at least 30+ times to get this to work. I have even went forward with minimal adb without running the root check and gotten up to the point entering the $ su step and then nothing! Most times it won't even get that far.
I cannot figure out what's wrong?? I even tried one click root but it says it cannot work on my device.
I have the following
Model # SM-N910V
Android Version - 5.1.1
Security patch level - 2015-12-01
Baseband Version - N910VVRU2BPA1
Kernel Version - 3.10.40

Security Software Version - MDF v2.0 Release 1
VPN v1.4 Release 5.2
Knox Version - KNOX 2.4.1
Standard SDK 5.4.1
Premium SDK 2.4.1
There's more after this but I don't know if it's needed?
Configuration Version - B14.SAM.SMN910V.0
I have been rooting phones for years and I have NEVER come across one like this.
Is there a custom or stock ROM that is already rooted I can flash maybe?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated
Thanks
Tom

I had same problem. Once I succeeded on BPA1 firmware but KNOX seemed to have interfered with the root, phone rebooted and root was lost. It seems only the developer version is rootable with Chainfire's auto root.

Would it help if I downgraded further to 4.x.x maybe? I was able to downgrade from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Tom

Hello all!
I FINALLY just finished rooting my Verizon Note 4 after several days of trying. The instructions are very detailed and I tried to follow them to the T, except I ran into a couple of minor differences when my phone went to TWRP and it was a little confusing.
The other problem was when I was using Kingroot or KingORoot, for some reason there was a message that was not popping up asking if I wanted to allow the rooting process to go forward or something, but I finally spotted it this last time, hit allow and it FINALLY let me get Odin to run completely and I am rooted!! I think the problem was I didn't have the SIMM card in and the stupid window telling me I didn't have the SIMM installed was blocking it or whatever. This issue should be added to the instructions.
Just wanted to let anyone who was trying to help that I got it rooted!
Now I need to figure out if I should stay with 5.1.1., or can I upgrade back to 6.0.1 or flash a custom ROM or what to do next before I switch my SIMM and start using the N4 permanently? I'm fortunate that my old Note 2 is still working barely until I decide what to do? I also need to transfer all my text messages and apps to the new N4, but not sure if I can do it with the back to back method or if I should just do it manually?
Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks again to all!

Yep it starts with 15.

Ok then follow the instructions in the video to downgrade to 5.1.1. If you are successful with that we can take the next step and root it.

Factory reset from within device and then recovery. Then kingroot version

Thanks mojoswagger...
I got it downgraded and rooted finally. Now, would you know whether I should stay with 5.1.1 or upgrade back to 6.1, if that's even possible without losing root? There's some features on this version I don't particularly like compared to 4.2 but I can live with it. I'm hoping 6.1 win be better...
Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure what you mean. To get the OTA you can't be rooted in the first place. It's only a security fix, so if you have a 100% stock phone, you can root like the last version since it doesn't change anything in regards to root.

I use Kies or Odin for updates not OTA.
My phone is rooted with Knox 0 x 0 and is working fine.
I would not touch to anything if I will have to root again after this update.
Sometimes small updates do not change the root status.
Just wanted to know if this one will take the root away.
Got you. I've never tried updating while rooted, so I don't know what will happen. Sorry.

I'm glad they threw us a bone, but it took them 5 months to fix stagefright in an update that basically only fixed that? Surely they could have done it sooner, or did a proper 5.1 update in that timeframe...

From what I read they are working on 5.1.1 for the Note 3 (I know 6.0 is out). It takes a long time (yes months) to make sure everything is compatible with TouchWiz. Personally I don't need it as 5.0 works flawlessly for me. I'm not one to need the latest OS. If my phone does what I need/want I'm happy. The only thing I worry about is security, and now that they fixed it, I'm really happy.

Where did you read that? There used to be a 5.1.1 update listed on the updates page but it was pulled months ago. T-Mobile would not even confirm whether or not anything at all is/was being worked on, or if the phone was abandoned. I highly doubt we ever get anything past 5.0 at this point.
I do agree on your other point, the Note 3 still holds up extremely well against current gen phones. I bought and returned a 6P because it just wasn't a $500 upgrade and the battery life was worse than my 2 year old N3 (original battery).

My bad. It was the Note 3 Neo, not ours. Yes I agree this phone is still awesome. I have an Anker 6400 battery, and it lasts two days easy. With all the features the Note 5 removed I'll be sticking with the Note 3 for a while, or at least until it breaks, or the next Note adds back the SD, removable battery, and IR. Those are the three things I love the most. Very power user friendly those are.

Hey, just got this phone and T-Mobile will not allow for an OTA update. When I try Kies it doesn't like the S/N (I used IMEI). Is Odin the only way? If so, is there a completely (I don't even require root) STOCK version of most recent rom or just the one prior to this? I'm currently only 4.4

Just download the current ROM (FOL1) from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N900T/, and use ODIN to install. When you click the Kies download button you get instructions, and a link to ODIN http://dl.sammobile.com/Odin3_v3.10.7.zip. Just follow the instructions, and you'll have it updated in no time.

450 MB, and no significant differences?

Just need a bit of help getting going

So Ive searched around and I just can't find a definitive answer so here is what I got.
I understand that this here; is how you use marshmallow with the new bootloader unlock and root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
I also know that I have to do this exploit first to unlock the bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/note-4-verizon-bootloader-unlock-t3358913
My issue is I ended up getting forced OTA 2 weeks ago. So my current question is, Do I have to roll back to lollipop? Is root/unlock even possible for me? If so, How do I do that since I haven't rolled back before. Its been a while since I've been into rooting/roms. Is there a link to doing it for marshmallow to lollipop? Also what about the firmware?
Current Stats:
Model: SM-N910V
Baseband: N910VVRU2CPD1
Android Version: 6.0.1
Build: MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPD1
Kernel Version: 3.10.40
I just need an answer since Ive been reading threads the last 2 hours. Its confusing since the titles of most are how to unlock bootloader THEN goto marshmallow. Thanks Guys!
I think I solved it myself. Looking like I'm effed with this bootloader. Since I don't think its rootable or unlockable.

You can try to roll back to 5.1.1 by flashing the full firmware (thanks, hsbadr!) using ODIN. You can unlock the bootloader on this version.
The question is, will your phone let you. In another thread, the success rate appears to be something less than 100%. I don't know what the harm would be... if you can't do it, ODIN will likely fail. At any rate, the attempt is on you. I can't be responsible for what happens.

Just frustrated right now trying to get Wifi to work. It looks like its suggested to try Flashing MM Stock, Reroot and Re-unlock bootloader here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
Then use TWRP after all that.

Just make sure you're paying attention to what you're flashing. There are only three roms in the verizon development section that are able to utilize the 6.01 bootloader and modem. JASMINE ROM, PAULPIZZ 6.01 Beta and Cm13. The other roms are ports based on 5.1.1 so you may need to stay on the previous setup until more roms are updated
Tip the OP usually states what works/does not work and updates when things are fixed . The information changes quickly so sometimes you may need to read the thread from the end back to the beginning to see if your issues have been addressed
It was actually super simple once I found the thread on how to go back to 5.1.1 then how to take that and go unlocked w/ marshmallow chain. Last thing to figure out is disabling OTA on Jasmin ROM

Can you go from retail stock 6.0 with locked bootloader to 5.1.1?

I'm... asking for a friend....
But seriously, I tried following the instructions on the "[Guide] Step by Step from Stock N910V 6.0.1 to hsbadr's CyanogenMod 13.0 " thread, intending to bypass them when I got to the point of being able to jump over to the newer roms, and all I got was a boot loop when I tried flashing in 5.1.1. Is it because I'm on a retail 910v or was it a user error kinda thing? I tried multiple times and couldn't get it to boot after the flash, ended up flashing 6.0.1 back just to get my phone back.
I'm also ready to free the bootloader and root this thing. It seems emotion OS is the most popular and up to date now, correct?
I have the CPL1 update from Verizon( Dec patch). I know there are a bunch of threads with how tos, but it's unclear how outdated they are and whether it works with these latest versions. If someone can confirm the best way to go from cp1 to emotion.. Let me know.
Also.. I saw a while ago a guide on how to go to developer edition. Why isn't that front and center anymore? Isn't Dev edition completely unlocked... Why wouldn't I want to convert to dev edition before dealing with any rom changes? If someone can give some clarification I'd appreciate it.
Great news, I went for the plunge and succeeded. Confirmed -> stock and latest version software as of Jan 20 2017 (CPL1) can be downgraded to 5.1.1, rooted, TWRPed, and blah blah. I used the same guide you mentioned at top (hsbadr's CM13 guide), except i stopped at step 52 and continued to install emotion OS instead. Highly recommend it.
I'm on EmotionOS now. Wow, it was really worth it. So smooth compared to touchwiz 6.0.1. Haven't found a bug yet, but even if i do, i won't care.
I'm not sure what you mean "when i got to the point of installing newer roms". If you got to that point, why were you trying to flash 5.1.1 again?
How did you root it? I flashed mine back to 5.1.1, but I'm not having any luck rooting.

Follow the guide. You are going to go through a complicated process using the king root apk. I think the guide makes you use king root 3 times total to accomplish various parts of the process. King root loads up and spins for a few minutes, eventually succeeds, then you gotta punch in some things to command line using adb. I believe this is rooting your phone a few times.
Eventually you end up with twrp bootloader and jasmine Rom and everything just sticks.
So far.. The only annoying thing with emotion is that I lost volte and video calling. Maybe they'll bring it in one day.

Note 4 - Android 6.0.1 - Downgrade? Or Fix? -- Neubie here

Hi, I've got this one Note 4 that's had loads of trouble presumably since the last security update.
Baseband Version: N910AUCS2EQD1
Android: 6.0.1
Have seen the instructions and all as to how to go about downgrading BUT one site I came across with the original stock firmware downloads outright state how:
""DO not ever try to downgrade from any newest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates back to an older 6.0.1 build version""
'and so I'm lost. Should trying to then reinstall the same Baseband version atop what's already there a good first alternative? ...that is, just in case it was never upgraded properly in the first place? Or is that not even possible?
Is trying to downgrade at all a futile pursuit?
Would truly appreciate any suggestions, help, direction...heck, anything! Thanks in advance.
I downgraded from 6.0.1 epk5 to 5.1.1 with no problem.
Not sure about qd1.
As long as you have the odin firmware, I see no problem.
Can i downgrade note 4 n910a from marshmallow to lollilop, please help me i am in great trouble because marsmallow update is very bad with a lot of reboot issue ,battery drain.
Once you are on QD1 you will not be able to go back to anything lower than that firmware. The bootloader is now at the latest version and has blown one of those imaginary "e-fuses" so that you can not go back in time to any other vulnerable OS. I just tried today to go from EQD1 to EPK5 and It would not flash and would fail every time whilst using the latest Odin. So good luck on finding anything on getting you back to another firmware version but at this time I do not believe there is anything that will move you back to the firmware you want. If you do happen to find something or make your own exploit do tell @sanaullahkhan371 If you are on QD1 you are not going to be able to downgrade if you are on PK5 you can try the Odin downgrade method that will5 presumably used but if you are not in this firmware use case you are SOL.

Hi,
Can you please let me know how did you downgrade? Is it straight away flash to 5.1.1 or did you follow any steps?
I am also planning to downgrade. Anyways, I stopped using Note 4 after update to 6.0.1 as it was switching off every now and then due to update. Might as well make this phone usable to take photos and as a video player for my kid
Thanks

I just odin to this firmware N910AUCU2DOI2-5.1.1 It s available somewhere on this forum.
Read how to odin if you never used it. In this case you need to unzip the file and load AP, BL, CP and CSC files on odin and flash.
Was running 6.0.1 epk5 previously.

No more switching off abruptly! I wont update anymore since all the apps which I use are working fine with current version of Android.

I'm also on EQH1. I have never tried to downgrade. I was just curious if it was possible, in case a root method was discovered that only worked on older versions. But I've just learned to live without root. EQH1 works fine for me.
I had the infamous freeze/reboot/shutdown issue with 6.0.1 and I wasn't sure if that was the issue but I downgraded to 5.1 and have fewer issues now. The phone runs just fine, except it does not reboot. You have to do a soft reset every time. But with the Wakelock app, at least it runs.

Thanks a lot buddy! :good:
My note 4 was also running on 6.0.1 EPK5. Found the 5.1.1 firmware and followed your instructions to downgrade. My phone came back to life and is usable now.:victory:
No more switching off abruptly! I wont update anymore since all the apps which I use are working fine with current version of Android.

Hi can i ask if u still have that firmware file

NRD90M.N920AUCS5ERA2 February 2, 2018 update

Yesterday I received a new update to my AT&T Note 5 with the build number NRD90M.N920AUCS5ERA2 that includes the January 2018 security update. Screen shot attached.
I can't seem to find out any more information but it just seems like a security update.
It seems we have a new bootloader.... v5
Yeah don't do it yet if you're still looking for root on this device using a bootloader v4.
I'm about the post the method in my thread in a few. It would be root on 5.1.1 using bootloader v4, but root is root right?
Updating to this new v5 Bootloader will void any chance of getting you root any time soon. It's taken awhile to figure out v4, but still.

Quite honestly, I appreciate all the efforts of everyone working to get root on this phone. It's just that after over 2 years of ownership I haven't missed root all that much.

That is totally cool man. I get it completely. I'm just putting it out there, because when the v4 Bootloader came out, I told everyone who wanted root NOT to update because I had unlocked so much on the Revision 3. It's in the OP of My Thread even! But I still got a bunch of messages asking about how to root the device after they've updated to Nougat.
Although in that circumstance, I know some people acquired their device after it was updated by the previous owner. So It doesn't bother me, because I'm still trying to do some work. I'm just trying to save some people hassle later on.
I mean I didn't really miss root either. But it irks me that such amazing hardware has to go to waste like it has. The Exynos7420 is comparable to one of my laptops. The difference being. The device has the ability for mobile data & has a touch screen.
So I'm not trying to strong arm anyone here. I'm just saying.
Don't say I didn't tell ya to anyone reading. It might be awhile before anything can be done for v5. Or we might all get lucky and find out v5 is more unlock-able than the rest. It's happened before.

Sadly, I don't know exactly how to save the update zip file but I think since I already applied it, the file is gone.
