Nexus 5x broken laser autofocus - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Haven't used the camera much on my Nexus 5x so I'm not sure when this started, but auto focus doesn't seem to work on the rear camera. Found lots of threads about similar complaints, but no real solutions.
However, I just recently discovered that if I cover the laser (right next to the flash) auto focus works! So I assume it is reverting to edge detection when I cover it so the laser is likely malfunctioning.
So is this something fixable or replaceable? I don't see any obvious scratches. I popped the cover and the laser doesn't seem easy to remove. I guess I'll just put some electrical tape over it for now, but it would be nice to fix if possible.

I have the same problem
I have the same problem, the focus working very slow and same time it's taking a few seconds to lock it.. I also did a replace the camera, but it didn't help.....

I have a similar problem. Auto Focus doesn't work at all, I can use rear camera only for scanning codes, when it's in macro mode. Camera's focus has only two values infinity or macro. No in between focus. Maybe the auto focus servo is broken. But then how can it change focus from macro to infinity and back. Any solutions apart from replacement are welcome....

After getting frustrated by this problem and to get to root of it, I opened my Nexus 5X, removed rear camera and the lens. Lo and behold the sensor below the lens was cracked. It wasn't an auto focus fault. Too bad. Now i will have to replace it.

[Q] Ace 2 - Camera Focus problem

When I take pictures with my new Samsung Galaxy ACE 2 (few weeks old),
Pictures with camera focus setting to macro, then it take sharp photos
but when I set it to auto-focus, the borders are sharp, but the image in the center is out of focus and blurry.
When I capture a movie, the same problem occurs, the middle is out of focus and the borders look sharp.
Is this a bad camera module? is there any possibility to tweak the focus of the camera? I've already upgraded the firmware to Jelly Bean, but no improvements. I am thinking about replacing the camera module, or buy another phone.
I read some one had same problem with galaxy ace.
My auto-focus is working fine in all of video, back and front cam.
No noticeable difference to using macro mode either.
So would think u've got a faulty module then

When I take photo close to the object it's sharp in the middle, if the object distance is more than 50 cm away, then center is out of focus but borders are sharp.
So it's probably a focus problem of the camera module, is there any solution to adjust the focus point of the camera module, or just replacement?
Solved the problem.
I opened the ace 2, removed the back,
cleaned the camera lens on the print board. cleaned with alcohol
that fixed the problem :good: photo's now!

Front facing camera blurry?

Has anyone also the problem with the front facing cam, that it only delivers sharp pictures while holding the cam no too far away? If I hold my arm fully streched, the image is never 100% sharp. The view finder shows a sharp picture but the result is blurred. I really start to worry that my front facing lens might be broken. But if this was correct, the preview was also blurred, right?
Hi,
I've been experiencing the same issue. Any subject beyond arm's length appears blurry. Not sure why this is. Were you able to solve this issue in some way?
The front facing camera probably has fixed focus so moving the subject further away will result in a blurry image. There's also some very aggressive noise reduction processing that really softens the image regardless. I don't find the front camera to be particularly impressive despite being optically stabilized, wish it still had the same sensor as the m9 as that provided better shots anyway.
Any solution to this guys on the selfie camera. Could it be a defective sensor of the selfie camera? If I am the object it works fine beyond one feet turns out to be blurry. I just got my 10, two weeks back. If anyone could solve kindly reply
Thanks
Any solutions for this. What I am currently doing is holding the camera close while taking selfies as this is the only solution I could find. Other then that it's a great device.
Did also not find a solution yet.

camera takes unusable pictures. but excellent macro images

I am facing an unusualy issue which has cropped up suddenly.
I am not able to use the rear camera of the moto z play for anything as all images are extremely blurry as if an opaque cover is kept in front of it. But If I use the camera from a 1 inch or lesser distance, the clarity is superb as if its only meant for macro shots.
This issue is not happening with the front camera but only the rear camera.
Please help.

Sounds like hardware problem
Do you have a warranty?

Seems like problem with laser focus, check if manual focus is working or not.
If it's working then maybe it's the laser module that's giving trouble.
PS: check if the lens is clear and there's no dust inside.
Hi,
I changed my battery yesterday and my camera is behaving the same way. Manual focus does not work.
I had to apply a lot of heat to open the screen and also on the back, to loosen the old battery. Could it have damaged the rear camera?
If I replace the camera module, the laser sensor will be replaced too?
I also lost the finger print sensor, but maybe that's because I lost the lever of the zif connector.
OP, did you have some heat on your phone too?

Front Camera Fixed Focus Issue

My RN5Pro is running on stock miui version 9.5 the front cam is nice in low lights but the dissappointung part is that the front cams focus is fixed so that the pictures took in front cam has a little blurry nature the details are missing and face looks like painted .. is there any way to make manual or autofocus work on the front cam .. i have tried so many camera apps but while switching to front cam the focus looks locked .. if rooting and enabling camera2api helps it .. im noob here so someone who knows plzz reply.......
....
As you wrote it, its FIXED.
The RN5 has a strange, short focus distance. The distance is about an arm away: if you take a selfie, make sure you hold the phone as far as you can in your hand. But if you use a selfie stick, its too far, and faces will be blurry.
Earlier phones had a front cam, that was fixed to near infinite, so almost everything looked "sharp".
This new objective system provides a natural bokeh effect on the front cam, and if you're in focus, its very sharp. But the focus range is really short, so you're easily fall in or out of the focus point.
I also heard this problem from a Samsung A5 2017 user.
tl;dr: There's no mechanical focus on the front can, you cant change the focuspoint.

Xiaomi Mi 5s camera replacement focus issue

So I got a main camera replacement (from ebay), since my old camera has weird blurry spots on the lens. The replacement camera fixes this issue, but seems incapable of focusing on far objects. Alright, just a camera with a broken autofocus, I'd think. What's weird is that I can hear and see the autofocus working on objects <2 m. For instance, the camera makes good macro photos and adjust the focus when I adjust the distance to the object. Does anyone have a explanation or a possible solution to this problem? I'm afraid of another hardware issue, but I'm hoping someone could at least explain what's wrong.
ps. I tested with and without the lens cover to exclude a dirty cover from creating the problems
Thanks in advance!
Most cheap camera replacement out there is not original.
Check it again if it's original or not
