I've been searching around and couldn't find an answer to this issue. Whenever I plug in my headphones the phone doesn't recognize that they're plugged in. Music just plays through the speakers. I've tried cleaning the port with compressed air, completely replaced the charging/headphone Jack, and installed custom roms. Nothing works. If anybody knows a fix I would greatly appreciate if you could tell me. Thanks!

Hahaha OK just thought I would post a fix in case someone else is having the same problem. Literally just take your headphones in and out of your headphone Jack until it fixes. Worked for me.

XDA Jack Plug issue
Saw the 1st post, wrote all this (see below) then re-read 1st post and saw it was from 2006! eeek!
Thought I'd leave this here anyhow!
Shaunyboi,
I had this problem a while back. There is a little contact in the jack socket that opens a circuit when your headphones are plugged in. When you remove the headphones (3.5mm jack plug) the contact should remake which then lets the speakers work. You could try inserting and removing the plug a few times to see if that frees it up, otherwise what i did was open the XDA, sort out the jack socket and then refit the bits back. Didn't take much effort (15-20 mins I guess) and it has been fine since (was about 3-4 years ago).
Hope this helps!
I have a Sprint Galaxy Nexus running CNA 3.4.1. I've only used the headphone jack maybe twice before to listen to music and everything worked just as it should. Recently however, i tried plugging in some regular headphones and when i played my music it came out the speakers. So i tried a few different headphones and some speakers and still the same problem. The little headphone icon that usually shows up in the status bar doesn't show up. I looked inside the 3.5mm jack and its clean, no lint, bent wires, anything. But no matter what i do i can't seem to get any headset to work. I'm forced to use my bluetooth adapter for my speakers.
This isn't a grave issue as i may rarely use headphones at all. But knowing that option isn't there anymore is just an inconvenience.
Any help appreciated. No rush. Just wondering if anyone else ran into this problem and knows how to fix it.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: Turns out after trying to play music through my bluetooth adapter it doesn't work. Bluetooth is connected, my speakers are hooked up, and the music is playing on my phone. Just no sound at all. This is a big deal! It's as if my phone won't play audio through anything but the internal speaker.
Again any help is appreciated.

Return to stock ROM to see if that fixes the problems. If not, it's likely a hw issue that headphones aren't detected.

I did that and still did not recognize it. Feels like my only option left is to open the phone and see if something was disconnected or get a new one.
When i insert headphone jack into the connector of phone, it doesn't works. I tried plugging and unplugging many times, still doesn't works even cleaned the jack connector from inside. Does anyone have this kind of problem?

did you try using different headphones? And are you running stock or custom?
Hi I've got the same problem.
My headphones (brainwavz m1) aren't working with my phone. I'm running official firmware 15.4.A.1.9. The official sony headphones which i've got with package works without problem. I have this problem since previous update (about 10 june 2014 i think) i thought that it's software bug, and i had hope that they will fix it with next system update, but i was wrong. I restored fabric settings and it was fine for about 1 hour after that time the problem is still occurring.
Any ideas how to fix it? i'm thinking that's a system bug but i'm totaly green in this topic.
Same problem here.
Up until I was sticking with the original ROM (4.1) everything was fine and every headset worked (with/without mic, no matter the brand).
Now on 5.0 (Cyanogen) and only headsets with mic are working (again, no matter the brand).
It has to be a SW problem, but I have no idea where to start. Someone willing to investigate / explain?

Hey, I had a similar problem when first purchasing the phone. Some cables (CTIA) are not compatible therefore wont provide any sort of audio. Try to use headphones that work with the device (Sony ones will work).
Hope this helps
My headphones pull out of my audio jack very easily, too easily. I also tried cleaning out my audio jack too, but it didn't help very much. Any suggestions on what to do about this problem. Anybody else experiencing this?
Are you using a case or does it also happen when you don't use one?
It happens even when I don't use one.
This happened to me too quite recently, was really bummed since the phone was going really well for almost 2yrs, turns out it was just lint from my pocket building up in the jack and getting mashed in by the 3.5mm plug. Got a toothpick and pulled it out in a clump, hasn`t missed a beat since. Of course the other problem could be the headphones themselves, try to replicate the issue with another set if you can and if they`re an expensive headphone you can re-terminate them or have an electronics store do it for you!
Hello, I had my s3 sitting for a while and decide to use it (haven't used it for 7-8 months). So I go on Youtube and watch a video. The speaker works fine but whenever I insert the 3.5 mm jack, I cant hear anything and if I remove it the speaker stop working.
I have tried multiple ROMS (CM13, DU 5.1, Stock 4.4.2) but they all seem to have the same issue. I also tried 3 different headphones.
What could be the issue?

it could very well be a hardware issue, did you replace the headphone jack/speaker assembly?

Since I got this phone, nothing has been replaced other than the battery.. And besides I don't think its a hardware issue since we have more than 2 to 3 people experiencing the exact same issue..

Check if speakerphone works, if it does, then it is likely that the hp jack is jammed and causing the phone to disable the speaker because it thinks headphones are plugged in.

Yes, it sounds like a hardware issue of the headphone jack being jammed or broken. If the issue is exactly the same on all roms, I would definitely replace the headphone jack, they are not that expensive, only $7

Why I don't think this issue might be a hardware issue is that, when ever I plug the phone to a wall socket and connect the headset jack, the sound comes on. But some few minutes after taking it off the wall socket, the sound is gone. And I have to restart the phone to get the sound working again..

if the speaker works but headphone doesn't then it may be that the phone detects some other audio device on usb. Do you hear any sounds at all through the headphones, also do the playback controls on the headphone work? If they do it may be the audio IC
Yeah, the controls on the headphone do work when this occurs.. And I don't hear any other sound..
Mind you, Immediately after inserting the jack, all the sound (speaker and headset) system in the phone is lost. Until I do a restart.
