Phone not recognized by computer - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey so i have been having a big problem recently. my htc one m8 32 gb verizon version doesnt get recognized by my computer. ive tried different computers, ports, and cables. i even got a new charging port and installed it but nothing. when i plug my phone into my pc, nothing pops up. the phone only charges but no option to transfer files. htc sync says no phone connected. Also have usb debugging enabled but nothing. running on 6.0 marshmallow and any help would be nice. Thanks!

If you look at your notifications, there will be one you can't clear saying USB Charging this device. Click on the notification and change it to File Transfer.

Couple comments:
1) Try the genuine HTC cable that came with the phone. I've noticed that some 3rd party cables will only charge, and not connect by USB/MTP. I assume the pin layout on those particular cables is not exactly the same as what HTC uses.
I know you probably already tried this (HTC cable) but this may at least narrow down the variables.
2) Assuming a Windows PC, go to device manager, find the phone (hopefully, its listed) then select the option to manually select a driver. Then pick the generic driver for "Android MTP device" (or something like that, forget the exact name). If often have to do this to get my home PC to "see" my M8 by USB. Although my work laptop doesn't have this issue. Your results will vary depending on your exact PC configuration, it can be very confusing and frustrating!

I don't see what the problem is. The PC recognizes the phone. Are you trying to access a function such as fastboot or adb, that is not working? You never say in your post what the problem is.

[Q] Windows XP - unknown device

After rooting the phone (in this case to leedroid) I have been having trouble with 2 xp machines at work.
Both detect the phone as "unknown device".
Doesnt matter what I select, charge only, sync, disk drive, adb usb debugging.
I have uninstalled / reinstalled htc drivers repeatedly.
Tried just using android sdk drivers.
I have deleted
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Wdf01000.sys,
2. Remove: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Wdf
3. Remove: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Wdf01000
I have also removed anything under Vid_0000&Pid_0000
Everytime I plug it in, windows detects it as unknown device. It wont let me update the drivers.
Help please!
what do you mean it prevents you from manually updating drivers? has it ever worked before? have you tried showing hidden devices via command line then removing the old device manually and then reconnecting it?
yep did all that hidden devices stuff too.
You wont believe this but I saw a post about someone using a thicker usb cable. I recently switched to using a retractable micro usb cable at work. I brought the original htc usb cable into work today, plugged it in xp detected the phone straight away!!!!!
who would have thought a cable was the problem!!?? All that wasted time!

Phone not Mounting on PC

So my phone was mounting fine on my pc, and then all of a sudden it wasn't. My Nexus 7 still mounts properly and accepts developer commands, but the m8 won't (yes developer settings is on).
I tried wiping and flashing a rom clean and it still doesn't work, charges fine though. Any advice?

You might try a different cord.
Open Device Manager in Windows and then plug the phone in. Do you see it in the list with a little yellow triangle? Do you see Android USB Devices listed?
OP after literally messing with various driver files, 8 usb ports and 2 laptops, I dug out my old box of cables and found a taped up, on its last limb OEM HTC EVO 4g (not lte the original) cable. This thing has been through the ringer. But its exactly what It needed. I figured with the 3 cable I had already tried this wasn't the issue, but have you tried using an OEM cable? I guess that is all that works. Good Luck

Still trying to get it to work, have tried 4 cables myself. I might just end up having to return the phone.... Fastboot works in bootloader

Uninstall all HTC drivers and HTC Sync. Then connect the phone. DO NOT choose the option to automatically install any drivers.
Open Device Manager, find the phone. Select the option to manually pick the driver, and select the generic MTP device driver.
This is what worked for me, after countless attempts at re-installing various HTC drivers, different cables and ports, etc.
Bump. Still looking for answer to this. I have RUU'ed both to Sense and Google Phone editions and the problem still persists, the phone does not detect its connected to a computer and change to mtp accordingly. Only way I was able to get the RUU in there was through fastboot, which is again the only time I can access the phone through usb. Adb is no luck in either android or recovery.

Have you tried revoking the USB debugging authorization and then accepting the RSA fingerprint key again when connecting to PC?
Obviously it can't be an USB cable problem if you can connect to it in bootloader mode and use fastboot commands.
To clarify, the phone just charges when connected, it does not detect that it is connected to PC so debugging doesn't even trigger, neither does mtp. I don't even get the slow charging notification
Does it do the same when you plug it in and reboot the computer to "pick up" during boot up process? Or if you run a live CD? I never had an issue like that with my phone but I did have a similar problem with the USB external blu ray drive I bought some time ago. The pc just didn't detect it at all not on any of the ports until I rebooted my PC with the drive already plugged it and for some reason it picked it up. <Not a solution as I don't know what caused it to not be detected in the first place but still...
Not sure if it's an issue with the device(Phone for you, blu ray drive for me) or if it's a problem with the PC even though other things might still work for you as it definitely did for me(phone, headset, mouse, keyboard, usb extender + all the external hard-drives connected to it)...
Problem exists in all computers, Mac, pc, linux
Did you try what I suggest in Post #6 above?
This worked for me when I had the same issue. adb and fastboot would work, but it would not mount MTP.
And just in the last day or 2 I helped someone else with the same issue and fix.
The phone doesn't show up in device manager.
Have you modify the Kernel? (Applying some settings for example)
I browsed over the web for this issue and found some people with the same problems. They solved by removing the settings applied on the kernel or flashing a new one.
I've flashed various kernels and ruu, still same result
Still looking for help

Connecting to PC to Browse

Wow, I would think this would be easy (coming from a Nexus 5), I just plugged in the N5 via USB to my Windows 7 machine and boom, I could browse the phone. Now, trying to do this with my G3, I have installed Windows drivers and nothing. I plug the phone in and nothing happens other than a pop up on the phone saying it is charging slowly. I've searched the LG site and Google and found references to MTP and having 3 options when connecting the phone to the PC but I get none of those options and cannot find an MTP option in settings. All I can find is a Connect to PC which tells me to use LG PC Suite. I really don't want to install some other software. I just want to browse the phone and copy files over. Is this not possible with the G3?
Switch usb ports. Set up usb connection as MTP.
Huh? As mentioned, I don't get any options to select MTP. Drivers installed, various USB ports tried, nothing happens other than a slow charging pop up.
Edit: Seems the system at work for some reason does not see the device properly. Just tried at home on my PC and it's fine. Bizarre.
If it's a work PC, it is possible your system admin disabled MTP completely. Because, you know... security and stuff.
try going on your phone while it is plugged into the pc

USB charges but no data

Hi, my phone stopped being able to get a USB data connection. The port is physically intact and does not wiggle. I've tried two different Macs and one PC, different USB-A to -C cables (all verified by Benson Leung). Also toggled USB debug, MTP and PTP modes from Developer Options, rebooted phone and computer. When I plug the phone in, it only goes to Charging mode. Android File Transfer doesn't see it and 'adb devices' comes back empty. There is no notification offering me to select connection type. Did I miss anything or is it time to send it in? Thanks, Tony
What OS are you running on your Windows - checking your Device Manager under Control Panels - are all the Google / N5X drivers installed and working correctly before this ? Try uninstalling, reboot PC and re-install them - and, use different USB port to connect the cable (what kind of connections are you using ??)
Can you run ADB ?
Thanks I'm primarily using a Mac (10.10.5) but the PC was running Vista. It was a borrowed PC so I didn't install the drivers. I don't think it's a driver issue though since nothing shows up in device manager and the phone doesn't offer to switch out of charge-only mode. Also the same Mac worked previously.

My phone doesn't show up internal or external storage when connected to my WIN laptop

Hi..! this is my first thread hope I explained my problem clearly.
Guys I have just installed Lineage OS 13 on myHTC One M8s, when I connect the phone to my laptop it doesn't show up anything, but I have the pop window but there is nothing showing up. I have tried usb dubbing ON and OFF. I have tried switching between MTP,PIP nothing works, please help me out guys..!!
Thanks a Million.
Are you using the original HTC cable? Some cheap cables won't connect by data by USB, but only charge.
Try re-installing HTC Sync (which includes the HTC drivers). Although even without drivers, it should still show up in Windows as an Android device.
