I got my new UMI Z yesterday and it is great. I want to collect some information for other, and I am also interested in your experiences:
solved:
- compass has had to be calibrated - there was no function (I used GPS status & Toolbox)
- Firefox crashes everytime immediately after start - solution found on cnx-solution (have to move it to internal memory & reboot)
- root is done - You need this files and read the thread:
SU.zip (2.79 for UMI)
modified TWRP - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70723565&postcount=135
flash tool & USB Mouse!!!
[/LIST]- files are available in XDA-forum - Thanks to the guys!
pending:
- found a funny issue - in some games there is a mistake with the touchscreen. You need one touch more to work. That means if you want to scroll, click (hold 1 finger and second moves, clicks), zoom (3 fingers).
Does anybody knows such a behavior or have a workaround? It is only present in some games. I'm going to tell it to UMI and wait for an answer.

Awesome! I've ordered mine from GearBest as well. They've sent a photo of the package ready to shipping Jan 23rd through DHL. I hope to get soon since I've paid for expedited shipping.

Look the photo attached. They said there's no shipping info update, which for me is strange considering that they sent it. Also when I've consulted the tracking number in the page that they've told me, the results are not there. Should I be concerned oraybe is because the Chinese's New year holiday?

Yeah, I think so. They are all away now. The tracking number does not work for me too. But clicking on the VIEW TRACKING MESSAGE should pop out a box, there I could track every step. So you have to be patient...

First Impressions
First impressions, it's not a bad base starter phone. There are quite a few flaws which frustrate me, but we'll see how long I can handle it for.
First the camera isn't all it's hyped up to be. the colors are over saturated and the picture have a horrible beauty mode to them, (even when it's off).
Secondly, many programs don't work well with it.
Tasker - is a hit or miss, some profiles work, some don't some toggle randomly
Kinomaster - Can't do video transition with this phone. You'd think with 10 cores it'd be able to process it [Fixed after 2.13 update]
VR - The sensor settings are all messed up, they are inverted and not very responsive. I've read that you have to go into configuration mode to reset the sensors but that didn't work.[Fixed after 2.13 update]
Almost impossible to find a case for it, and since it's Chinese New Year right now, nothing is open.
The Wifi and Bluetooth randomly shut off, but this is because of the power profile, so you have to make a new one so that you don't get frustrated.
Screen is alright, but it doesn't have that true black then it is in a sleep type mode
The tool that you are supposed to use to transfer files and data to and from the phone is not even on the site (Rootjoy). it was removed from mediafire due to it being a infected with a virus or something and there is no where else to find it. [Had to download the firmware from Mega an then use SPF Tool]
It appears like they improved the camera but will test this out soon.
Announced that there will be no nougat until at least summer.
I mean there are some nice features, like the dual sim or sim/sd card. It has been able to stay connected in places that I wasn't able to be in before, and the USB-C is nice. We'll see if they come out with a Nougat for it, and sort out the Rootjoy program, and the sensors, but we'll see how long before i may have to sell it.
**UPDATE**
So after realizing that I couldn't OTA update my firmware after the last update, I manually upgraded the firmware to the Feb 13 release. And to my happiness, of course it did a complete reflash, so my stuff was deleted. Luckily I had stuff on my SD But still.
Got mine on the 26th. Got to say, it feels a bit unfinished and slightly rushed. The camera is terrible. The 4k recording is like its recording a tv with analogue video with low reception... except the analogue video is what you are trying to shoot.
The x and y axes on the gyros are opposite. How could this be missed in testing phase.
Rootjoy(pc companion) is found no where. I was lucky enough to find one (though I was actually looking fora way to root the phone)
Also the companion program has a misleading name.
Fingerprint sensor is a hit or miss.
quick charge isn't that quick (takes 2 hours)
But..
Feels good in hand
android 7 is comming hopefully there will be fixes for these issues.
quick charge
Has reed charging/data cable
good internals
ok speakers

To me it seems that the hardware of Umi Z is quit similar to the hardware of Umi Plus and Plus E.
It might be worth to try to root Umi Z with the same tools and TWRP as used for Umi Super: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/guide-root-twrp-umi-plus-t3494418
I'm waiting for my Umi Z i ordered last week, but due to Chinese New Year it is not shipped yet.
Got the phone yesterday. Immediately got an OS update. The only big disappointment so far is the fingerprint sensor. Several tries to unlock the phone are usually needed.
EDIT: Ringtone can't be changed. Still default ringtone no matter what you do in the settings. Stupid.
EDIT 2:In the end I was able to change the ringtone to a cutom one, but it is lame and annoying. You can't just pick the ringtone using a file manager. The system displays the correct name of the ringtone, but plays the default one unless you pick it via the system default apps.
EDIT 3:Video has 3gp format. 4K video cannot be uploaded to YouTube (unsupported format error).
Posted a sample 1080p video in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/umi-z/how-to/sample-photos-t3542343
The only issue I have is that video playback is not working correctly. Image stucks and sound keeps pausing and playining. This happens in every app like facebook, twitter or youtube
i'm using my umi z for almost a week now and i definitly could work better.
the fingerprint sensor works okay. sometimes it takes two or three times before it unlocks.
the camera quality is not as good as expected, but fine for me.
i also noticed the problem with the ringtone.. it just can't be changed. Such bugs shouldn't be.
Yesterday is had to realize i couldn't start two apps( Kingdom Rush Origins, zen pinball). They just crashed instantly. And when using google play music the "small window" app constantly crashes when switching to another song and brings you back to the lockscreen. clearing cache and reinstalling play music didn't help. Beside that all other apps seme to work.
i'm still waiting for some decent cases to be released.
the charger delivered with the phone is complete crap. while sleeping (about 8 hours) it hadn't even loaded 70%. i then measured an output of 0.06A at 5V.
so in conclusion, the umi z got quiet a few bugs and problemes. i hope the software probleme a going to be fixed with an update from umi itself or by a custom rom.
Edit:
It just happend that i got no sound. Needed to restart the phone. Could have happend when pulling out the headphones

Hi Johnny,
If you have trouble starting some apps please try moving them to the local storage instead of SD card. Then reboot the phone. Then the app should work. I had the issue with some apps too.
Good luck,

UmiOfficial Hi, nougat
Unfortunately MediaTek still has not issued the Nougat SDK for the P20 and X27 SoCs, so in the worst case we can expect those update this summer only.

it has been out for a loooong time, there is another device similar to the Beam was on July, the other one was on March
both are for Europe market
they don't seem to be very popular
they are from the 8000 family, although the spec are very close to the Galaxy S 9000 family

Few weeks back I came across a review of this phone on youtube. Even though it was announced early this year (and GSM arena says its already available), I didn't find any information indicating that this phone is actually available on the market. I was looking for it's price.

good idea
Just bought mine a week ago from StarHub (the official retailer for galaxy beam).
I second the subforum idea. How about starting a google group as well since the community is so small.
For those who wish to purchase the phone:
You need to place a reservation at StarHub Center before making the purchase. It takes about a week before your phone is ready for collection.
I was lucky enough to get it immediately because someone cancelled his reservation.
waiting for mine, deseperatly ....
i'll check with Admins and Sr Mods to see if they want to create a new forum for it
That's great! Thanks man.
nocomp: you may try bugging their hq at cuppage road. They might just have an extra handset lying around like mine. Haha
i ve bought it from a local shop in singapore, they were agree to send it to me to france.
still waiting for the delivery...... the singapore post tracking service, isn t much alive since 2 days......
i guess that ll be a change from my nexus, what i am pissed of, is that you can t use an app that use camera and projector in the same time
it seems that what has to be done, (part of find a way to upgrade it to froyo):
get gps working when projector is on
get projector working when camera is on
can you tell me if the galaxy beam has also the tv out like galaxy s?
best regards
herve
I have some bad news for you. Samsung has officially stopped software support for that device last month and said there's no plans for official froyo for it as there's just not enough beams out there to warrent the support as it was only sold in Singapore and very small numbers. They now have all development on tablet and galaxy s models. Google for more info. I read that last month someplace
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
hi
thxx a lot, that news has been goin on here and there fr a while, surely some ppl can adapt 2.2 to the beam model.
i finally received mine )))
bad news, impossible to install an application from android market :'(
never happend before with the nexus, i get the message "unable to download" either i am in wifi or 3g
any idea why?
herve
Hmm never had a problem with market. Have you tried replacing the stock market app with a generic one from ipmart? Perhaps it's locked down to Singapore or something.
Topic moved to General until and if a new proper forum comes into place for this device.
hi,
well i ve took sim card off n sdcard off, and then it was working over wifi.
put the simcard back again and market was working.
no idea wtf happend.
hi,
how can i know what software update is current?
my version is 2.1 update 1
I8520DXJ11
kernel 2.6.29-zeus1
can t find in the setting menu the update section
thx for your help
btw i ve found this, anybody tried it?
http://shomblingteam.blogspot.com/2010/08/samsung-i8520-galaxy-beam.html
My phone is running the same firmware version as yours. It's released on 1 Sept which is more recent than the July version on that blog.
hi,
thx for the news, so if there is an update it ll appear in the "about" section right?
do you know any trick/tweak for allow to run gps when using projector?
herve
Probably, but I doubt there will be any more updates since the beam is not getting froyo. Hopefully I'm wrong...
I'm not aware of any tricks but if you have the time and expertise try editing the source code? Haha I'm no expert either.
Did someone try out SE LiveView? Is everything working? Media control, etc.?
It is quite cheap nowdays so i am thinking about to buy one.

I had one as acessory to my galaxy tab... Every thing worked as expected... For a while.. What happens is that android droppes the connection in sleep.. So you havto reconnect the lv all the time. This makes it useless... It died after three months... Just would not wake up any more... And i could not find the receipt, so no replacement....
However i dont know if they fixed the reconnect issue... This was six months ago...

Hi,
I have one from amazon.de for about €25. I have played with it for 2 or 3 weeks but then I have bored. Disconnection issue is very annoying. You can use a program for it (for $0.99) and it can fix a lot of disconnection issues but not totally. I wanted to be noticed for calls, messages with it but it haven't worked as I expect...
There are 2 or more topics here about it, you can search but it is a little disappointment for me...
Hope this helps.
Bought one a couple of months ago, played with it 20 minutes then putted it back in its box.
After reading your post, I gave another try and...it works like a charm with the soft available on the Market. Mp3 player (stock samsung) control is ok, sms, incoming calls... I do not use FB or Twitter, so don't know if it's ok with this.
I do not have issue with connection (maybe because I played just 20 minutes again)
@+
guys any conformation whether it works with the note?
It works on my Note (running Criskelo's LPY), except for any external plug-ins. Thats seems to be an ICS problem of the SE software for Android.
You also 'need' LiveView Manager ($$) to keep it up-to-date after your Note disconnects to save energy. Remark: it polls, so it's not really 'live'.
And you're right, it's on sale and a nice gadget.
Sony has a firmware update for the little thing when you install their Update Service Software and you put it in dowload mode.
So anybody else tried this on the note and updated the software sothat it does not disconnect looks good and would be handy for my work if it worked the way they say and amazon has it for £20 if its the same thing also notice that sony has a liveview 2 coming soon dropped the Ericsson
I have the orginal smart watch and its works fine with ICS LPY (non rooted) on my note and the watch is fully up to date.
It does drop connection now and again if you dont use it for a while. Its still no perfect but it works ok for me.

I was initially intending to purchase Sony's Smartwatch, but am concerned by it's compatibility with the One X - does anyone here own both products?

Tempted to get one of these
Let's wait
This one is VERY expensive!!!
I think I'm going to wait for the Pebble smartwatch as an ultimatum, and if something worthy comes out in the meantime, I'll get it.
The sony smartwatch DOES work just fine with the HTC One X, but it does not support email notification for HTC's email app as each vendor makes their own email app. I am sure at some point someone will come up with an HTC compatible notifier as it has an open API. Someone has written one for Gmail.
motoactv
i use a motoactvhttps://motoactv.com/ this the best option if your the sporty type its the only one that has gps and it link up to hart rate, speed and step sensors as well as your phone. it also has 8 or 16 gig for music.
You guys havent come across this one yet ...

Hev you read the OP?
I know every technology needs it's first users... But isn't this a little soon for that type of things ?
My points are :
- My new One X with a quadcore, a camera,etc... will be thinner than my watch
- Having to reload it every night or so will be a pain
- It's ridiculously expensive
- What will it bring ? If you see you have a mail or a SMS, you'll check it on the large beautiful screen of your phone
(BUT, if they were less expesive, I'd definitively buy one of thoose )
Yep I ordered the Pebble, I know people with the Sony Smartwatch and the imWatch, which are ust too big and need frequent charging. The Pebble is most importantly a watch with other functions secondary.
I just bought the Sony ericsson LiveView watch.
What a crap! Don't buy.. Loosing connection intermitently..
Perhaps im not using SE phone, that's why..

There are no intermittent connection issues with the Smartwatch. The original Live View watch DID have lots of connection problems even with Sony Ericsson phones!

I can tell you that after a couple of weeks of use, the battery is lasting one full day. You need to perform 3-4 full cycles charge and discherge to get full capacity but now is more than acceptable.
I'm using it for business and I do not loose any call.
The UMTS 3G data is perfectly working as well as all the others features it promises.
Fully recommended froma myself... but I'm not an expert.

So I got a ZP200 and updated the firmware to the latest 20120508 one. Now pressing search button in home screen doesn't bring up Google Search any more. It vibrates a bit but nothing else. Long press still brings up Voice Search, though.
The new firmware enables the full 1GB of RAM. It's pretty nice to be able to switch between many apps.

It's from Zopo's site: http://www.zopomobile.com/xiazai.php
No, it's not ICS. Still 2.3.6.
So I figured out why the search button stopped working after the update. The new firmware is missing GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app.
I installed Google Search from Play Store. Then made a copy of com.google...googlequicksearchbox-1.apk (can't remember the full name) in /data/app. Uninstalled Google Search in Play Store. Moved the copy to /system/app. Renamed it to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. Changed permissions to rw-r--r--. And I now have a functioning search button!
Of course you need to root it first. All the file operations (copy, move, etc...) were done with AntTek Explorer (File Manager) but I think any root file manager will do.
hello,
can you tell us how you do to install upgrade ?
thanks

Here's a tutorial on flashing ROM on MT6575 phones:
http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.com/2012/05/mt6575-flashing-tutorial.html
The flash tool and steps are the same on all MT6575 phones. But make sure you load the correct update of your phone model. Here's the one I use (click at the green download button):

Did anyone of you buy anything from:
h**p://w_w_w.zopomobileshop.com/en/
I'm wondering if it is save, they have decent prices but they take extra money for Paypal payments

Hi stephen,
After being messed about ordering the dami y5 i have took plunge and paid for the zopo 200 as only brought the gphone merely for iphone lookalike, but now i wanted a bigger screen and more reliable phone.
Anything i need to know as regards does it come rooted? if not will superoneclick do the job?
I know only some things from having the gphone f27 but the zopo will be a newbie to me.
Looking forward to this thread and mostly my phone.
I noticed you mention something as regards get the full 1gb unlocked, why is it not already functional?
have you been able to get a protective case for yours?
Also what phone is the zopo 200 version a copy of as i see the 100 is copy of the htc evo.
I will be playing and trying things out when i get it and anything i can help with i surely will
Best wishes
Pete

It doesn't come rooted but rooting it is real easy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26268246&postcount=3
The phone was shipped with a kernel that limits the memory access to 512MB. The new shipment in China is now with the new kernel. I don't know what you will get. If the build number is ZP200_120508 or later than you have the latest.
Personally I HATE protective case. No phone is thin enough and I don't need to make it worse.
I don't know what it's copied from. Don't think it (or ZP100) had a specific target for that. They both look really generic.
Wow them cases have got to you, you want to talk about it?
I was thinking about the thin rubber type just for the back only to protect from scratches, tyre type design one like for the ipod, iphone as i got my 2 boys one for their ipods and and gphone, nice and slim and perfect for the job.
Think one's your HATING are the ott chunky one's, which i agree are pointless.
Thank you for link, i have read full thread already and saved everything and will follow carefully, read twice then act.
Really looking forward to it's arrival.
Did you get 2 batteries with your's or had to go and buy another spare as from what i read, only downside to this phone is battery life.
Best wishes
Pete
Just an info for Italian people ... a good site very reliable and tested personally wher to by ZOPO and other Chinese mobiles ... vivandroid.com.
They are personally tested, very correct and reliable and the mobiles are already in Italy !!

The battery life is the number 1 issue with this otherwise great phone of value. It was originally designed with an optional add-on battery in the form of a back cover. Unfortunately, the add-on battery caused so many problem (flickering screen, for example) they canceled it after the first batch.
Zopo is working on a new higher capacity (2000mAh) replacement battery with a thicker back cover. It's scheduled to become available by the end of June. It will increase the thickness of the phone from 12.5mm to 14.5mm. http://bbs.zopomobile.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=13248&extra=page=1
I don't know if it will become the standard battery but my guess is it will. We will have to find a way to get the replacement parts from China somehow. And it's obviously having an impact on the case design. Zopo had some cases for the existing one, but they will have to redesign them along with the new battery.
The phone surface is tacky enough for me. So no case needed for me.

And BTW. Hero H6000 is identical to ZP200. The official firmware update files from Zopo even have the name H6000 in it.
Some good reading there stephen.
Interesting on battery information, i wonder if i maybe get the newer one? doubt it as they need to sell the current stock.
I used translator to give me an idea on what they are upto.
Have you got gps working?
Cheers fella

Yes. That's the same one I have installed since the first of the month.
The latest news from Zopo forums is 4.0 is almost done but they are stuck on bringing in 3D functionality. I was guessing that's the holdup since no other MT6575 phone is 3D capable. I wish they will just release a version without 3D first since not many people depend on that anyways.
On other MediaTek related news: It seems the new dual-core MT6577 phones are near their release. There's really high anticipation over there in China for this low cost performance platform. No clue if Zopo is working on one but the first couples of them will be by Huawei and Lenovo.
If anyone is looking to buy a MT6575 phone and can wait a bit, I'd advice to wait for the MT6577 phones. In addition to the obvious performance advantage, they will come with Android 4.0 installed. No update or wait needed.
If anyone interested black Moto X Force 32GB reduced in CarePhoneWarehouse to £299 which is a steal for this phone.

In second post, @MinecraftZombi.es said that he grabbed one and he's from Spain. Ask him how.
I'm also interested in obtaining this phone. £299 is the cheapest price iv'e found, the only problem is that I can't find any way to get the phone from the UK to the US
Maybe something like www.myukmailbox.com and similar
Got one Tuesday after much fussing. First one had a power button issue and the second was the last in stock. I have a very small hairline scratch at the top but not on the actual display itself. I have just ordered a screen protector and case as not *ONE* (high street) shop in the UK appears to sell any accessories for this phone that I could find. So I have been using it bare. The scratchy plastic front lens is a bit of a pain for me as I have an HTC One M7 that has never had a screen protector on it in over 3(?) years and has not one scratch on it. Some minor niggles. The scratch prone nature of the lens obviously. The Android soft keys take up room on the screen and requires root to sort out (I am a bit shy about doing that right away). The lack of a charging LED when connected other than if you run it down to 0%. A fingerprint scanner would have been nice as well as the sensor that the S6 has to monitor things like heart rate. I can't seem to get Nova Launcher to work properly on it either (post Marshmallow and after updating). Not sure if that required root or not on my HTC though. I can see myself rooting it at some point but I will probably need some hand holding in order to do it.
In all other regards it's a steal!

Nova Launcher works absolutely fine. Most be something to do with your phone.
Try to reset the phone.

Nova working fine for me too.
Turns out something changed for the camera app launcher (The one on the bottom was different to the default launcher on Googles Launcher). I was getting a photo app error when using it in Nova ('Photos has stopped working unfortunately' or something like that). I changed the icon to the Camera icon shown in the default launcher and it works now. I think I must have installed Google Plus or something whilst running Nova and it changed the Camera launching app. Only the default camera launcher seems to work with Nova on Marshmallow (what is that Quickpic? Will have to investigate). Also I don't think Nova likes the 'Hide System Bar' app on unrooted phones.

I don't think that mods are deleting every topic with not valid deal or info. Locking, maybe but similar deal could happen again
