To be honest if your not gonna stream then it's best to get wd live hub with 1tb hard drive in it. I have all my 1080p mkv movies in them and it works great. I also have the amazon fire also but my downloaded movies I keep on the wd.

The Fire TV does not support playing files from a connected hard drive. Not through any apps, including XBMC. The only way to get the content on your hard drive to play on the Fire TV is to connect the hard drive to a PC and make the files available over the network through a sharing protocol like SMB. Then XBMC will see the files shared on the network and play them.
So Ive looked around for apps providing true 4k content at 3840 X 2160 resolution. I know there used to be an addon from the pipccan repo but it appears to have lost support and no longer links to any actual content. I finally have a 4K TV and replaced my 1st gen FTV with a 2nd gen, so im pretty bummed out about not finding any UHD Kodi content yet. Prime video doesnt offer alot, and Transparent isnt really my cup of tea.
Am I missing something guys? Are there other apps that stream UHD content? web searches turn up nothing but the one app. Thanks for any suggestions!
Amazon still has not opened up their APK for other developer apps to play 4K content .. Will need to wait a little longer.

I'm considering getting the AFTV2 for 4k. I have a 4k TV and was wondering if the 4k content will play with 4k resolution or should I stick with the AFTV1?
I'm not sure there is any 4K content on Kodi ?

You can google bigbuckbunny 4k. there are two things to test.
if kodi can play 4k and then second does it output native 4k resolution.
Can someone help who already know. I'm contemplating getting the nvidia shield.

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking here, the 4K content you have directed me to is just on Youtube which your Sony tv should be able to play in 4K from the Youtube app on the tv, you were asking if Kodi can output 4K on the Fire tv. If you point me in the direction of any 4K content on Kodi I will try it for you.

Gauduchon. Any 4k Content available on the web can be a test factor. I don't think we are allowed to post live links for media. Question is.
1. While using Kodi, does the aftv2 output 4k
2. While using kodi, if we play a 4k file can kodi handle it with the new kodi as when I tried a sample file it stuttered. but then that was one of the only file i had.
It doesn't appear that any old app can output 4K. http://www.aftvnews.com/4k-video-output-not-available-to-fire-tv-app-developers/
Aftvnews this is precisely the answer I was looking for. I've gotten the nvidia shield. Do you know if that will work ?
Some of my videos are recorded with my Hauppauge HD PVR and/or my Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder, both of which give me 1080i video files. Playback with my first gen Fire TV and Fire TV Sticks via Kodi and Plex have been fine.
I had added a 2nd gen Fire TV recently, and last night tried to watch a recording (1080i) and the video was all garbled (see if THIS LINK works). It didn't matter if I used Kodi or Plex, it looked the same. I tried tweaking some settings in Kodi around deinterlacing which had no effect. Using VideoRedo to "edit" the video and save, forcing it to re-encode and de-interlace, the output video which is progressive, while 90% of the original size, plays fine on the 2nd Gen Fire TV.
So, is there anyway to overcome this issue on the 2nd gen Fire TV? or am I forced to re-encode all my interlaced video files?
Hello, I have just purchased a new Amazon Fire TV 4K box with the intention of running Kodi in 4K but I have only just realised that 4K mode is only enabled when watching 4K content in Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Is there any way at all that I can force enable the 4K resolution at all times?
Thanks

With Kodi no you can't, but MrMc has 4k support but no addon support, and SPMC has a test build out now with 4k support. Hope this helps.
Even if you enable 4k resolution you won't get it unless it's 4k content... If have addon to watch 4k content in kodi it will automatically display it.
