Dear Mr. Steven B,
The situation with updates depends on several aspects.
If the update has not been released by Google for this type of processor, will not be released officially.
Best regards!

-.- They are unacceptable google and Samsung. Τhe one over the other (Sorry for my English)
That's a load of bull. There are MANY devices out there with the same processor that have lollipop. This one's all Samsung.
They really don't want to release it.
Fortunately, we have great developers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-neo/development/p-motion-rom-ll-t3257790
We must wait untill the bugs will be solved.
been this rabbit hole before. you will never have a custom rom with no bugs. EVER
Samsung said the s3/s3 neo are not powerful to handle TW Lollipop, dafuq? The HTC HD2 is a windows device and has a working port of marshmallow ?. So Samsung is forcing us to buy a new device to get updates. I read that 50% of Samsung phones can get lollipop but only 5% received it -_-
They're ridicolous! There are many devices that are less powerful of our S3 Neo and they've got Lollipop. The only answer to all this is that they're forcing us to buy new Samsung phones, of course.
Why phones like the HTC One M9 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 which both use the Mediatek MT6795 Helio X10 have custom rom but xperia m5 not even a simple custom rom or kernel?
(sorry for my poor English)
Well sony smartphones are more complex, xperia needs unlocked bootloader, devs to create custom kernel, custom recovery and most of we need devs to make it happen, but sadly devs are preoccupied with Z series for know, and this is a very new phone so we need to be patient. But anyways m5 works fine with stock rom,for me its perfect, fast, stable and it's UI is pretty nice. But i know there are different opinions and users who like different stuff.

I never had problems or the will to change the stock rom from sony. It's perfect.
But it would be nice to have some customs roms anyway.
We will have them, but we have to be patient...

I don't see this device getting any Development what so ever unfortunately usually seems to be the case with Sony mediatek devices I really wanted a m5 a while back myself I know where there is one for sale now brand new but used in white less than £180, but due to lack of development it's exactly why I'm hoping to be going for the x instead to replace my m2. If you have no intention of rooting ect it's a good device with a cracking camera if only it was as popular as the m2 was things may of been different
The Lineage OS is just getting out, and since A (2016) series phones really need a stock android based ROM, it would be very nice to see some developers working for this beautiful device as well. Given how popular this phone is, i think it's a shame there's no stock android ROM for it. We beg you developers, TouchWiz is really annoying!

I have a 5 years old mid-range smartphone Samsung Galaxy s4 mini(19192) few days back i flashed lineage os 15.1 on it, and lineage os 15.1 is based on Android 8.1 with January 5,2k18 security patch and on the other hand i have this Xperia z5 premium which is 2.5 years old but still no oreo roms are available for this...so if a mid-range old device can get oreo update and have tons of custom roms then why the developers aren't making rom for Xperia z5 premium?

Finally a question that I can help answer!!
There are several reasons why development for the Sony Z5 Premium is very very slow.
Samsung devices are FAR more popular on the market then Sony https://www.statista.com/statistics/271496/global-market-share-held-by-smartphone-vendors-since-4th-quarter-2009/. So it would make sense that since Samsung is more popular then there would be more development for that brand in general.
Limited development for Sony devices is partly because Sony isn't very helpful in releasing information needed to help our volunteer developers. Custom ROMs need the access to the device's kernel. A kernel is a piece of proprietary software developed by the phones manufacture that allows the operating system to talk to the hardware. Sony is not very helpful in releasing details about their device's kernels. This means our volunteer developers have to work 1000x harder to get limited functionality from the device. Samsung on the other hand is a little more generous with releasing their kernels for public development.
As an aspiring programmer, I respect that it takes a lot of SKILL and TIME to develop ROMs, root mechanisms, and any other work that is needed to bring a new feature to a cell phone. This is done by passionate volunteers who have lives besides making contributions to this community. If you're that interested and passionate in helping these developers then I recommend that you get actively involved in the development community.
I hope this helps. It's frustrating but this is the reality. Even more frustrating is that I just learned that my Z5P has a permanently locked bootloader. I won't be able to play with any of these custom ROMs
I've noticed with the last Galaxy S devices that there is so little of custom rom, while OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei always have a lot of ROMs
Can someone explain me why?
I'm considering buying an s22, as I like the design and compact size compared to the Pixel 7. I hate oneUI though and am concerned about the same thing: Whether s22 will get a stock android daily driver custom ROM
You have some GSI and a sGSI
But yeah custom roms on Samsung seems to be rare
