Hey xda, I've researched this on and off and could never find a solution or definite answer.
I've been thinking of doing away with Windows instead of dual booting.
Edit. I should state I'm using Linux, specifically Ubuntu mate.
So my question is: Is there a reliable way to flash stock firmware, specifically on the note 4?
Either by heimdal, or Odin in a VM?
I've tried Odin on vm before couldn't get phone recognized. And can't trust the answers I've found about heimdal, being safe or not. So if someone with some experience and a confirmed solution could help, please.
My primary concern is for the safety of the phone, so if Windows&Odin are the safest, or if other options are risky then please let me know.
Thank you all on xda for all that I've learned here!
I would also like to know the answer to this question. My desktop is an iMac. I have a couple of laptops that are dual boot Win 7/Linux. I too, would like to get rid of all my Windoze machines, if I can find a reliable way to flash ROMS. I hardly ever boot into Windows anymore. Thanks to anyone who can enlighten us.
Have a look at my tutorial: Odin on Linux. Hope this helps!

Title says it all. I COULD find a way to use a Windoze XP machine, but prefer using either my iMac, running Snow Leopard, or my laptop which has Ubuntu on it. I did see an old thread about flashing from SD, but no one mentions unlocking from SD. Thanks for any help you can give.
I don't believe there is a way to do it from Linux or Mac.
The coke unlocker actually copies a virtual loader to fake the phone into
thinking its unlocked, and that allows it to load the replacement coke bootloader.
Its only possible to flash via SD once the phone has been unlocked.
You could load a VM on your Mac with a Windows XP load and try flashing from that.
Not sure how the VM's handle USB connections though, so it may not work successfully.
Safest bet is to find an XP machine you can borrow.

There is a way to do it in the Trinity, but I have not been able to confirm if this can be used in the Vogue
See this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576880
Who knows? There might be a way to adapt this for the Vogue...
Well, if you have access to a Windows Box, why not use it? You won't get any deseases you know!
And it's not like you would need to unlock every day!

I believe he said that he only has a Mac and a Linux, which is why he is asking for this...
I've been flashing Android stuff to my Vogue and use HTC Flasher (on linux) from here: http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/files/?C=M;O=D I believe it's actually an opensource app hosted elsewhere.
I'm thinking I might actually try going back to WinMo so I may be tying it with a WinMo img soon.

Where you actually able to unlock your phone with HTC Flasher? Or, do I have to do it from Windoze?

Actually I do have a dual boot laptop, XP and Ubuntu. I was just looking for a Mac or Linux only solution, as I don't like to mess with Active Sync. Also, btw, I am a she, not a he.

I am sorry about the "he/she" thing... it is really kinda hard to tell sometimes considering that I cannot see you and your username does not really point at anything that tells me you are a woman (my apologies).
There might be some open projects floating around for this although I kinda doubt it. You have to be really careful as far as RUU is concerned. Remember that even using the one for the wrong device could hurt you...
As far as AS is concerned, as much as I hate to admit it, it does what it is supposed to do. Lastly, for the most part, you do not need AS to recognize your device to upgrade (put the device in bootloader and you are set).

Hey guys, I'm on linux here and unfortuantely I do not have a windows computer. I'm pretty new to the android game, sgs3 is my first android phone.
My question: Since I don't have windows will mounting my phones internal flash drive and then using dd to flash the stock image with root enabled over to my phone work the same as odin? or does odin do something further? Also will heimdall work for this purpose? I suppose I can always bring up windows in the hypervisor but it seems like this would be easier. I am also just curious as to what odin does.
Odin is used to flash firmwares, modems, kernels, and recoveries. As far as I know, Heimdall doesn't support the S3, unless it's been updated and I don't know about it. That would be up to you to find out.
As for your first question about using dd, I haven't got a clue. Best wait for someone more knowledgeable then me to come in and answer that one.

Thanks for the reply, in linux dd is a terminal program that writes images to disk, among other things, be it usb, flash drive, hard drive etc. Like if you downloaded the ubuntu image for your computer and then wanted to install it to usb drive for a live image from which make an install on another computer you would use dd if=/image_pathway of=usb drive or flash drive or whatever media you wish to install it to. I have a pandaboard, and have actually used dd to write linaro android to the pandaboard's flash drive before, but I figure theres a good chance that the phone is more complex and may have hardware/software to prevent someone from simply using dd to write a disk image to the phones internal flash drive.
Actually, I believe I've heard of people being able to dd custom recoveries onto the phone. I don't remember where I saw this though.
Sent from my GS3
I think you need an unsecure kernel to the dd thing. I think.
Thanks for the replies. I just loadedup windows in the hypervisor and rooted that way. I wish I had a second phone to test stuff like this on lol. I have pandabaord to test software on but it's not quite the same.

Does anyone know who develops odin? Is it someone on this forum? Was thinking maybe they'd be willing to allow me to port it to linux.

Anyone else confirm? I can use heimdall to flash roms, and the root injected stock image to my sgs3 from within linux?
Odin is samsung software. We have a few samsung tablets that come in for repair where I work and Odin is what samsung gave us to flash their software onto the tablets.
Hello, I have searched and read for days without an answer to this. I am a long time iPhone user, and jailbreaker/dev, who has just jumped ship over to Android. I have the US AT&T Galaxy S3. I am attempting to root it using a Mac. I have read the guides, and watched the videos from appdr0id, however, it is not working for me. When I use heimdall I get an error that it failed to initialise. I am guessing, from what I read, that it may have to do with missing Samsung USB drivers for my Mac, but I can't find them anywhere to download. Also, I would like more info about whether or not I need to place any files into the phones file system before flashing, which files, and where, as this has made no difference. I have heard great things about Cyanogen Mod, and would love to try it, but I am open to suggestions as to what to use post-root. Will someone please give some directions for rooting and flashing using my Mac, or some more detailed guides?
Here is a screenshot of the error.
Heimdal doesn't work on the US sgs3. Easiest way is either Bootcamp or a vm.

Wow, thanks. I haven't read that anywhere. I think I will do it with an XP or Win7 vm, then. Now I have to search for a Windows how-to guide. Argh!
please help i have been looking everywhere to find out how to root my att galaxy s3 on linux. i have only been able to find instructions for int. version or using windows. link to a thread or anything will help. thanks in advance
Maybe use wine... Not sure if that's safe though. Search for running Odin with wine
You can try to search for Heimdall, witch from what I understand is the Linux equivalent to Odin for Windows. I actually just removed Linux from my computer and reinstalled Windows specifically so I could root. I wasn't happy about it but I figured I would go with the tried and proven method to avoid any possible headache. I can say that mrRobinson's no flash counter trip method worked flawlessly for me on Windows though. I can't say anything about Heimdall though, as I was too nervous to try it.
Heimdall will handle it; I've done it myself. See here for how to use it in this case.
thanks

Yes, considering that set of instructions was developed based on my own device.
Hi everyone.
I'm new to the forum and really need some help. I have a rooted Note 2 which I have been flashing roms on for some time now but recently upgraded my computer to an iMac. Now I have no idea how to do this on a Mac.
I have so far managed to download the file and convert it to a zip file but when i try and flash it on my phone it fails every time. I am obviously doing something wrong as I cant get it to work at all. My windows laptop is on its last legs so I wont be able to use that much longer.
What I am hoping for on here is that someone would be kind enough to give me a step by step guide on how to do this on a mac. I know I am asking a lot but I have heard so many good things about the people on this site that I thought I would give it a try as I am banging my head off a wall trying to figure out what to do once I have the file downloaded.
I am very new to using a Mac which is why I need step by step guidance. It's not a dodgy download or anything like that as I have tried numerous roms.
I thank everyone in advance for helping me with this.
Paul
