Cannot install 4.0.2 update - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I was using 4.0.0 stock with twrp and root. Tried to install the 4.0.2 update but every boot just took me back to recovery. Tried wiping clean, no change. Tried installing stock recovery v2.0, recovery would hang. Tried using new twrp 3.0.3 and I could get back in, but any ROM, stock or not I installed, would not stick.. Even twrp would warn me "no os installed. reboot anyway?" even when I had just installed a ROM. So in the end I flashed OOS 3.2.8 with twrp and then flashed stock recovery. At this point I'm pretty much at factory stock at v3.2.8 with stock recovery v1.0. Now I'm trying to update to 4.0.2 via OTA and for the 3rd time already I have received a installation failed message and rebooted to system. The first time I thought it was because I disconnected VPN after starting the download, so I downloaded a second and a third time. I don't want to resort to sideloading again because I fear I might get the same no OS installed problem I got when I tried to install 4.0.2 in the first place. Does anyone have any insight on what is wrong?

Steps:
1. Install latest Official or Modified TWRP ( 3.0.3/ 3.0.3 version 14 by eng.stk)
2. Enter into recovery. Connect phone to PC and copy downloaded ROM file.
3. Wipe everything in the recovery- Data, System, cache and Dalvic. It will erase everything.
4. Flash ROM zip after completing, don't reboot phone. Reboot to recovery again, and then reboot phone.
If u reboot phone directly after flashing ROM, u will loose TWRP.

Even twrp would warn me "no os installed. reboot anyway?" even when I had just installed a ROM.

This is pretty normal for nougat OOS. I've faced it for all 3 ROMs i flashed. Don't worry, your ROM was flashed successfully. You can mount and check the /system partition, you can see your ROM files there.
So here's what worked for me. (considering you are on ext4 /data)
1. Flash latest official twrp recovert ext4 version or use the file system swapper zip if it doesn't decrypt your data in recovery. TWRP has some issues as of now and mounts f2fs as default, so you just need to flash the file system swapper zip in order to swap it to ext4 by default.
2. Wipe /system /cache and dalvik cache.
3. Flash full 4.0.2 ROM zip, should be 1.4 GB in size.
4. Flash TWRP image again just in case.
5. Reboot to recovery, not to system.
6. Flash stable 2.79 Super Su and you are good to go.

Thanks for the tip, however I don't mind losing twrp, I only want to get stock unaltered update and this procedure does not help in this

Have you tried this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/guide-flashing-oos-v4-0-1-custom-rom-t3537757
P.S. I think you did, but I'm just asking.

Thanks for the tip, but I fixed it. Ended up flashing v3.2.8 via twrp and installed OTA to 4.0.1 via sideload. Recovery would not boot unless first fully booted into the system. After that sideloaded 4.0.2 via OTA and now back to complete stock.
Thanks guys!

2. Flashed Full rom OOS 3.2.6 via TWRP
3. Flashed stock recovery via ADB. Everything works fine but
Now i am trying to update 3.2.6 to 3.2.7 getting error " Installation Failed" . Whats wrong i did .
Also i have boot logo Freedom OS don't know even i am on stock rom. Can any one help me
1. How to remove that boot logo
2. Completely go back to stock rom with stock recovery
3. Also get updates and install without fail
Please help Guys.
Thanks in Advance
Mahesh
Well, probably its a problem with your boot.img partition. Extract boot.img from stock rom zip, then flash it via fastboot flash boot boot.img and then, flash orginal recovery same as boot. Then, finally, flash via recovery STOCK ROM. Probably now it will be fine.
If not, try flash TWRP and make FULL WIPE included system partition and repeat upper steps.
Cheers.
In twrp goto wipe and do normal wipe remember don't do advance wipe otherwise it'll format internal storage as well so avoid advance wipe only do normal wipe then install full 3.2.7 zip and super su. zip

before you flash 3.2.7 mount system read-only. you can do this under "mount"
it is a known bug with twrp and oxygenos
You can download the stock boot logo from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862664522

if you are on stock recovery you cant change the mounts.
flash twrp to flash bootlogo and oxygenos 3.2.7
otherwhise you have to install via sideload but this is very slow and you cant flash stock bootlogo
so flash twrp and then mount system read-only and then flash oxygenos 3.2.7 and after or before this you can flash the stock bootlogo

Update from 3.2.7 to 4.1

Hey guys. I am still on marshmallow on my op3. I am rooted and have twrp recovery. My question is what firmware/modem do I need to flash before I update to latest Nougat update and if my steps below are correct.
I would prefer not to do a clean install.
My steps would be:
Download full rom
Flash any firmware if required - this is what I need to know
Flash Magisk as I need root
Profit?

this is stock rom, you don't need to flash any firmware...
if you're coming from MM, i would recommend sideloading the rom, wipe everything, then go back to stock recovery then sideload then before 1st boot fastboot TWRP again, then reboot to TWRP and flash Magisk...Profit.
if you want to flash from TWRP without going through this (which i don't recommend), make sure in TWRP to format data as f2fs, wipe everything then flash the rom, and then form TWRP flash TWRP again, then reboot to recovery (not system), then flash Magisk.

if you're already rooted it wont install..and you can't flash the small ota file from TWRP, you have to flash the Full rom (1.4 GB)...
how you download is up to you, but why download from the update when there's many links available around !

OP3 Refuses to Boot on 4.1.0

I've been trying to install OOS 4.1.0 for a few hours at this point without any luck with any method. Every time I try to install it I just get a bootloop and I have to reflash 4.0.3.
Things I have tried:
Flashing incremental OTA zip (from TWRP and official recovery)
Flashing full OTA zip (from TWRP and official recovery)
Reflashing stock 4.0.3 boot before installing
Dirty flashing 4.1.0 full zip over 4.0.3 and 4.1.0
Wiping system and cache before installing
I feel like I've done just about everything beyond fully wiping my phone and everything I've tried has never given me any problem when updating in the past, does anyone have any ideas what I could do to make this work?
Flash Twrp 3.0.4.1 by jcadduono
Wipe data-dalvik-system-cache to do a Clean flash.
Flash the 4.1 Oos.
Flash SuperSu 2.79 Stable or Magisk if you want root.
Reflash recovery again. Reboot to recovery. If it works reboot to system. If not flash recovery again. Reboot to recovery to check if it works.
Incremental ist alwys a bad idea if you modified your prhone. TWRP is a modification. SO ALWAYS use FULL zip from TWRP. But why this causes a bootloop in your case... dunno. I always use blu_spark TWRP and have no problems.

Oreo update for rooted OnePlus 5t

Pls help me updating my 5t to oreo.i am currently on version 4.7.6 with twrp recovery nd super su root.
After updating to Oreo I again want to root my phone
Pls share links to download compatibile ROM, recovery nd super su.zip
But you already have the OREO OOS ROM installed, why not use it? Flash the Oreo recovery from codeworkx through fastboot, make sure to follow the instructions so it sticks and then flash Magisk or any root solution of your choice. It's not hard if you do some searching.
Check in ROMs' threads and come back what your interested ROM is.
What I did was flash the ota to update me to Oreo. Then had to reflash Magisk and kernel.

If you have already installed a custom recovery and rooted your phone then you should be able to follow these instructions.
I can personally confirm that I was able to install the beta versions of Oreo and the final version of Oreo without any issues.
Here's what I did:
1. Download full .zip
2. Download Blu_Spark TWRP or Codeworkx TWRP (I personally used Blu_Spark but both should work).
3. Download Magisk 15.3 (I havent used SuperSu in a while so I can't confirm how well it works on Oreo but in my opinion Magisk is a better root method and it works in this version of android).
4. Make sure you have both ROM and Magisk on a easy to find place on your phone.
5. Boot to fastboot and fastboot flash the recovery you just downloaded.
6. Boot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache and then install the ROM.
7. Once the installation is done, boot to system and wait till the system to finish updating. Once there you can go to settings > phone status and it should read (android version = 8.0.0 and OxygenOS version = 5.0.2, congrats, you're on the latest OxygenOS version for this phone).
8. Reboot to fastboot, and fastboot flash the custom recovery again.
9. Boot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache again, and flash Magisk, wipe dalvik and cache once more and reboot to system.
10. Once the phone is booted up, you should be rooted with Magisk and on the latest OS.
9. Boot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache again, and flash Magisk, wipe dalvik and cache once more and reboot to system.
10. Once the phone is booted up, you should be rooted with Magisk and on the latest OS.
NOTE: Since this is a big version update from Nougat, it's always recommended to do a clean flash although not necessary in most cases unless there are issues like big battery drain or when apps or the OS are not working properly. Also, if you are coming from a custom ROM and not the official OxygenOS, then you should definitely do a clean installation (even if said custom ROM is based on OxygenOS).

Wiping data and system partition which means you're wiping the entire OS and installing the new version on a clean partition. Think of it as formatting a hard drive and installing an OS instead of just upgrading your existing OS.
You obviously lose all apps installed, and it would be like when you first turned on your phone, however as long as you don't wipe internal storage, all your photos, music, etc are not wiped so you can use apps like titanium backup to restore all apps and data .
This method is recommended when switching from different custom ROM's and when upgrading from major version updates, like for example, going to Android 8 from Andorid 7.

So i took the jump and flashed blu spark and the 5.0.3 full rom.
Yes i lost the recovery to stock, but that's ok. Just want to get OTA in the future and I don't need root at the moment.
So this is what i did (coming from 4.7.6, official twrp, magisk 15.3)
Make sure you have all the necessary files (eg. blu spark img file and the full ota file on your phone
boot the fastboot and "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-x_blu_spark_v8.68-op5_op5t.img"
On the phone, choose and go to recovery
(now i'm on blu spark) Wipe Cache and Dalvik cache (i did this 2 times just to make sure)
Choose install and select the full ota rom file
Let it run and install the rom (took less than 5 mins)
Wipe Cache and Dalvik cache again (again, i wiped 2 times just to make sure)
Reboot
Make take a while (less than 10mins) for android to start and do the upgrade etc
Done
So far so good, i don't see any immediate problem. I will play a bit more and will post if I encounter any problem :good:
I have updated to 5.0.3 through system update app. where it downloaded full ota file and installed. Now I want to install twrp nd root my phone so pls confirm my steps
1 boot into fastboot mode and flash bluespark recovery
2 wipe delvik/cache from twrp recovery
3 flash magisk zip
4 again wipe delvik cache
5 reboot
are above steps correct?

Always boot into recovery mode

Today I wanted to upgrade to OOS 5.1.1. But after flashing and reboot, my 5t went into recovery mode again. Then after that, the phone always reboot into recovery mode.
I tried flash stock recovery, blue spark recovery, tried to flash oos 5.0.4, none works.
What can I do to save my 5T? TIA.
I noticed that I have this error in my twrp codeworkx recovery:
failed to mount /vendor (invalid argument)
This happened to mine as well. I did a full wipe and flashed the stock recovery and then flashed the most recent Stock OOS.
What do you mean by a full wipe?
cache+davlink+system+data? I did.
Internal storage needs to be wiped too?

First thing, the error about /vendor in TWRP can be ignored because you will not have that partition if you have not installed a trebelized ROM (MOKEE treble rom).
Next is your issue:
There are two approaches I can Think of:
Approach 1) - Download official full rom from this thread
- Boot into TWRP and copy this ROM to your phone
- Wipe Clean (standard TWRP clean flash step) keeping internal storage intact
- Install ROM and try to boot.
- Sometimes it will boot back into recovery, you can try to install again.
- If it boots up fine, then follow this guide to install TWRP correctly again.
- If it didnt boot up and you are ok to wipe everything, Boot into TWRP
- Wipe Everything (you will lose all data, photos everything)
- Boot back into twrp
- Now follow install steps again.
Approach 2) if 1 didnt work:
- use this guide to unbrick your device
- You can then ROOT, install recovery etc by following this thread
I have recently experienced this problem, there was little help and finally I have to wipe all data on the phone. It was a pain in the ass and i hope you wont have to go through it !
Did many rounds of flashing of recovery and rom, tried many combinations. It eventually worked.
While I am not 100% sure, i think what makes it work is to use compatible recovery (8.0 or 8.1) with rom, and wipe both cache, system, and data after (?) flashing.
Thanks!

First thing, the error about /vendor in TWRP can be ignored because you will not have that partition if you have not installed a trebelized ROM (MOKEE treble rom).

What TWRP were you using? Had basically the same problem with "twrp-3.2.1-x_blu_spark_v8.74_treble-op5_op5t.img", flashed an older version and it worked fine.
Seeing "failed to mount /vendor (invalid argument)" as you mentioned happened to me too. I think it means it's only for treble compatible ROMs.
if you were rooted with magisk, you have to flash the magisk uninstaller before flash the rom.
I had the same problem after flashing XXXnolimits rom (bluespark recovery 8.73). I just power off the phone pressing the power button for a while (10-20 seconds). It worked for me and the rom was succesfully flashed. Hope this help for the future.
i will keep this in mind and will try it next time when we have an update! Thanks.
