Booting straight to bootloader - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I was messing about... as you do!!
I think I corrupted the boot img and my phone boots straight to the bootloader menu, no s-off, i want to go back to stock anyway to get my phone on N firmware.
My question is, do i have to oem re lock before I apply the RUU or has this changed since I last done this? or do I do it after or not at all?
\cheers

If you extract the ROM.zip from the RUU.exe, you should be able to flash that via the SDcard method without relocking your bootloader first.

Or maybe your volume key is stucked?
Sounds stupid but that happened once to me

Then the short answer is stop trying to flash it until you go s-off. As far as I understand one limitation of dev unlock is that you can't flash things like radios.

^^^What he said, and you have the file named incorrectly (should be PG321IMG.zip). If you want to flash the firmware, obtain S-OFF first. After obtaining S-OFF, you must place the renamed file onto the sd-card. Make sure fastboot is unchecked under your phone settings. Boot into the bootloader and let it do its thing, then reboot.

[Q] Help, fastboot loop stuck

hi, i need help with this.
QUick run down on my story, bought the phone and found out that it is rooted so wanted to go back to stock and ended up getting it stuck on fastboot loop.
Im only new to this and found the thread in developers area with guidance on how to fix this but im getting very confused as to what i need to do and what files i need downloaded including ruu, im from AU and there isnt many ruus for voda 021 floating around. I would be happy tho if i can flash it to same rooted state as it was as long i get it working again.
Can someone give me some pointers pls, the way that thread with instruction is written is very hard for me to understand because some basic steps are skipped prob because orger understand them but im very nooby and cant work with it

ok, i think you've tried to flash a stock rom without flashing a stock recovery !!.
do you have fasboot adb on your pc ?
you need to unlock your bootloader and re flash a custom recovery
if not search the dev section for a tool that will unlock your boot and re-flash a custom recovery for you-all the instructions are on there.
once you have re unlocked and flashed a custom recovery,go into recovery and see if there are any backups of the previous rom (nand)
see if that works ..

According to the hboot (1.12) you need a 2.17 based ruu .... but i can't find it !
Tthe basic steps now are
Unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
Get your nandroid backup there,(the vodap021 2.17) you need to flash the boot.img file from that nandroid with fastboot commands, then do a full wipe in recovery and restore the nandroid.
But you still have to fix the fastboot part right ? You need to install android SDK/java SDK and the HTC drivers. Then you have to put the phone in the bootloader and open a commandprompt from inside the folder where the adb/fastboot files are located ...they are in a subfolder in the installed javaSDK install folder

Thanks, it is beginning to make some sense to me now.
So first bit I got to do is the fastboot issue, which is tha last bit you mentioned right?
And after unlock boot loader than flash the recovery with one you provided in the link, tx
So that means I will go back to stock right?
Yes unlock, flash custom recovery, flash boot.img, full wipe in recovery, restore the nandroid, flash back the stock recovery .....
And yes this way you go back to stock and i will also give you the download link for the stock recovery. This one is the last you flash after restoring everything
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
Then you are able to update to JB from within the phones software update menu
Ps you do not have to relock the bootloader anymore !

Please guys, iWe spent all day trying to figure it out, after wipe phone reboots constantly and when if boot screen it's not charging so I'm prob going to run out of battery in a couple of hours
You restore through the custom recovery. Power+vol , choose recovery. If you flashed the recovery ok then you can do from in there. Ie mount usb, copy over your nand backup and restore it. You may have to flash the boot.img using fastboot.

[Solved] Installing OTA with S-Off and Root

Update: Well, I took the plunge on my own, and everything worked fine. Flashed firmware.zip, went to stock recovery and flashed OTA, and voila, all good.
So I've bought an HTC device for the first time. I did S-Off and unlocked bootloader and rooted as well. Now, there's an OTA available (I have the Asia_India variant), and I wanted to ask just how would I go about updating.
Here's what I've surmised till now:
1. Revert changes to system partition or it will fail to update (I moved some system APKs, but I saved them for such a scenario.)
2. Flash Firmware.zip to get stock recovery back.
3. Install OTA normally from the notification.
However, I'm still not sure what else I'd need to do (unroot, using the option in SuperSU?), so was wondering if someone could help me out. I've made backups in Philz and TWRP recovery both just to be sure.
P.S.: I extracted the firmware.zip file from the OTA, and tried to open it, but it doesn't open in apps like WinRAR. Is that normal, with the file only flashable via fastboot?
Personally, I'd say remove root just incase it stops the OTA but others will say it doesn't matter so long as the rest of the system is 100% stock as HTC intended it
For OTA updates after having a custom recovery, just flash your ROM stock recovery (search XDA all are available) then run OTA as you normally would and then flash your custom recovery again (if you like to get root again). However personally I would not do this with S-ON device, probably it's better if you're S-OFF while doing this to avoid any problem.
I am also interested in this. What would be the risk if I do this with S-ON? Assume I flash the wrong stock recovery or do some other mistake, won't I still be able to flash my custom recovery back from fastboot and get everything back up and running?
Thanks to whom will answer. :good:

So long as the phone still boots to fastboot, yes (although unlocking the boot loader will delete any backups so make sure you backup the backup to your PC before doing anything else!)
Thank you for your answer. As far as you know, being S-ON, is there really any kind of mistake one can do to brick the phone so that it doesn't even boot to fastboot?
Also, if my bootloader is already unlocked, no data wipe is going to happen again flashing a firmware/OTA in any predictable case, right?
Once again, thank you or anybody else who knows the answer.
By the way, are there any FAQs answering these questions? There are some FAQs here and there, but none seems to be very clear on these matters.

If you're S-ON there's not a lot you can do to brick the phone. You could wipe the ROM and have it not boot but you should always be able to get back to fastboot. This is where S-OFF is only handy to have if RUUs are about (it's the ONLY reason I am S-OFF, it's purely for a 'going back to stock' standpoint)
Yes, if the bootloader is already unlocked then you're good to go

[Q] Unlocked bootloader with wrong file

So I just spent the last couple hours trying to root my phone. Only to realize that when I unlocked the bootloader i requested the wrong unlock.bin file. Instead of selecting the htc m8 file, I selected all other supported devices. I don't know if this is the cause of my problem, but since I can't reboot to bootloader, I feel that it is. Is the solution as simple as relocking the bootloader and then unlocking it with the correct unlock.bin file. Or can i just get the correct file and unlock it again. I don't know if any of it will work since the phone won't go into the bootloader. Thought I would as people that know more than me before I brick my phone.

So I've been reading around and come across some conflicting info. So I finally found the fastboot command to lock the bootloader but some have said to flash the stock ruu first while others say after. Can anyone clear this up for me and let me know if it makes a difference?
S-OFF - no need to relock the bootloader, just run the appropriate RUU
S-ON - relock the bootloader and then run the appropriate RUU
cheers.

Quick reattack on this. I never actually went away from stock. As I couldn't get into the bootloader I never flashed twrp or anything so do I really need to flash the stock RUU? Just trying to figure out for knowledge purposes. Am I basically flashing the RUU to start over from scratch or is it just a precautionary thing?

Ok I was finally able to get it to flash ViperOne. I had tried previously with an unofficial CM and Candy5. Anyone know why only Viper worked?

Bad download of the ROM.zip, perhaps.
Always check md5 before flashing ROM (Google how to check md5)
If you downloaded on PC and transfered to phone it may not have transferred fully.
