I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with a problem I'm having with the Franco Kernel. I have a rooted Galaxy Nexus, running on stock Android 4.0.2. I have a bit of experience running various custom ROMs and kernels with a OG Droid and HTC Thunderbolt. Until now, I've been content to run stock ICS on the GNex, along with the stock kernel.
I was impressed with the amount of praise I have recently read (I'm a habitual lurker on a number of Android forums) about the Franco kernel, however, and thought I would give it a go. If it can improve performance and battery life, that is fantastic. So, I bought the franco.Kernel updater from the Market, downloaded the zip file (#15), proceeded to recovery and installed it.
That seemed to all go smoothly. The problem is that when I rebooted, the phone got hung up on the black and white "Google" screen. I know sometimes, it can take a while for the phone to do what it needs to do under the hood before it boots up, but after ten minutes on the "Google" screen I did a battery pull, went straight to recovery and reverted to my latest backup.
I've done some searching for anyone who's had a similar issue, but I can't seem to find what the problem might be. Most likely, I'm simply missing something small but critical to the successful installation of this kernel. I'm hoping someone with more experience than me might recognize what it is I'm doing wrong.
Any patient assistance or advice would be heartily appreciated. Cheers!
I could be wrong, but Franco works for 4.0.3, not 4.0.2.
Which could be precisely the one small thing I am missing. I will check this out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Im using franco 14.4, not yet upgraded because when you flash a new kernel, you have always to wipe everything and i'm lazy now ..

Where are you getting this information from?
Not once did I have (nor have other people) wipe everything on kernel updates. You do not have to wipe everything for a kernel flash...

cool! thanks! good to know I read a bit everywhere.
I mean, I know how a kernel is, and thinking about it it's true that is not needed to wipe, but if he has some problems he could try this out :/ maybe a fresh installation of everything could be good
Hi guys, I urgently need your help! Yesterday my phone drastically slowed down, I don't know what may have been.
I was using cyanogenmod 10 with Franco kernel (I was testing 512 GPU version). So I tried restoring a backup, but no use, slooooow!
I did all the wipes and reflashed CM10 from scratch, with gapps. Problem still exists! Tried reflashkng Franco Kernel (380 GPU) and still the same. At first I thought I might have fried my GPU, but Franco kernel updater app shows gpu working.
So I think this may require a total wipe (including sdcard) and a stock good image reflash from the gn toolkit.
I'm attaching a log right after boot (which took AGES). It seems to me that something's not right.. by I need HELP!
Thank you guys...

I am not an expert of reading logs yet so probably another member will help you more regarding that.
It seems you have already done a full wipe and tried installing/flashing again but I am not sure which procedure you followed. So my suggestion is to put on your SD card a ROM and kernel, maybe Trinity just for a change, then do full wipe and install the ROM and the kernel so it will be all fresh with a new kernel as well.
If it is still slow, then download any app that would control the CPU and GPU speed to ensure of their speeds running now.
At worst case, returning to stock should help a lot in determining if it is a software or (hopefully not) hardware problem.
Good Luck
I found out that other people have this problem, so I'm asking in the already open threads. Close this please.

All of the three times I flashed this rom it come up with no Status Bar, Background image and Phone apps. The first time I wiped the required partitions plus Internal Storage too. I was coming from Morom. The second time was the same except I didn't wipe Internal and I didn't flash the Xposed thing. The third time I Odin'd the stock rom and rooted it before and it came up the same. I thought maybe something was holding over from Morom that was causing it.
The Md5 for both is right. I'm a little confused because I seem to be the only one having problems. I'm beginning to wonder if there's a problem with my Sdcard. I couldn't make MultiSystem work right either.
I reformatted my card. My computer said there was something wrong. When I set it up for MultiSystem I formatted it fat32. When I re-did it just now the computer wanted to do it in exfat. Maybe it should have been exfat all along. Anyway I lost my ext4 partition. Hopefully I can get things straightened out over the weekend.
Update: That fixed it.

Like I said above. Reformatting my SD fixed it. Do you have a card reader? Is everything on the card saved on your computer?
I can't be certain it will work for you but it did for me.

Runs FANTASTIC. I am really happy with it. I have it skinnied down quite a bit, I've frozen about 100 apps. When I clear cache, I "optimize" about 240 apps, whereas out of the box it was well over 300.
Between WLD, Greenify, ES Task Manager doing its optimzations, and my own pruning/tweaking (overclocked/undervolted, thanks to hsbadr's kernel and Synapse), I'm getting insanely good battery life and ridiculous performance, while retaining all the tweaking I'd gotten used to on KK,... I am running a dozen or so xposed modules without issue.
Thumbs up! :good:

Hey is there any way you can elaborate a bit more on how you optimized your battery life?
I was on definitive 4.4.4 not too long ago getting an average of 5+ hours on screen time. Moderate to heavy usage. Which I thought was pretty good.
After installing this rom (which it runs amazing) I've noticed my battery life running a bit shorter. Screen on time is 2h 30min at 26% right now. 14% of my overall usage right behind #1 "Cell standby" at 16% and Android OS at 6% and android system at 5%.
I've only been running this rom for several days so far. I don't think it's something I've installed, or at least nothing that wasn't on kitkat. I'm on wifi a lot and barely use data. Battery Doctor says I have 45 power issues to optimize if that means anything.
I use greenify, clean master and battery doctor. Along with tasker to shut off mobile data when connected to wifi and a few other things (I'm still trying to learn it).
I also went through permissions and stopped a bunch of apps from checking locations and autoruns.
Any suggestions would help thank you! Battery life is the one thing I wish the note 4 was better with haha

It turns out that "Cell standby" is the issue, at 31% as I write this. Under 30min on screen time. It drained my battery by over 40% over night! I tried searching several threads, it seems this is a common issue. None of the 8+ threads I found had a solid answer, mostly theories that don't work for most. Please post a link if I have missed a solution somewhere!!
Thank you!
New to Android and Rooting/ROMS
Does anyone have any tutorial videos for installing this ROM? Do i need to be rooted? Will this work on android 5.0.1 Hardware Version N910v.05? Snapdragon variant? If not how can i downgrade to make it work? Any basic custom rom Installation videos?
Is there a way to get Android Pay to work on this ROM?
I've been using Google Wallet for tap to pay with no issues but it just updated to Android Pay which doesn't seem to work with root. I've tried all the workarounds I've found including disabling root but it's still not working, would that be because I am using your ROM? Is there any way to get it working in this ROM?
@hsbadr on the AOSP build, after restoring some apps with Titanium backup and rebooting, I lost data again. Tried rebooting and toggling some settings but it's still gone. Why is it so hard to keep data connected on Verizon with AOSP ROMS?
Edit: for some reason it didn't like me restoring my previous Android ID. I created a new one and data is back. funny.

Android Pay implements security checks including root. It should work fine on unmodified stock system or this Safe OG5 Upgrade!

I don't have any of these issues (data connects automaticly after the 1st boot & persists). Also, @jlavallee25 had data issues while testing other modems but none on OG5 modem. I'd re-start clean with OG5 Safe Upgrade.

Re: AICP
A few questions...
1 - Is FastCharge enabled? I don't see the notification I would see in TW... but it seems to charge pretty quick.
2 - What version of xposed (if any) should I install?
I'm having the following issues so far:
Trouble restoring multiple apps with Titanium Backup (this is a typical problem I have... but present again). It will hang on one app, and I have to kill TiB, install the app manually, and restart. This is a problem because...
I currently can't install anything from the Play Store. It's weird... according to the status, it skips downloading the app, and goes straight to installing, where it sits indefinitely. This may be because...
After restarting the phone a second time, I lost LTE, and have no connection to mobile data.
Any help?
I've got the ROM and Gapps files on my phone, but I won't be able to re-flash the modem with Odin until I get back home tonight. If needed, could I dirty- or clean-flash the phone and reinstall AICP without the facility of Odin?
Thanks
Thank you so much for AICP!!! I flashed last night according to your instructions, had a little trouble with mobile data, but after trying the fixes and rebooting, data finally sticks. All I can say is I'm loving the ROM. Everything is working perfect so far, data, GPS, calls, mms, Bluetooth.... Wow its a whole new life for my n4...thank you @hsbadr

I can't get LTE to turn back on. I've toggled it back and forth, and rebooted it several times. I had this problem with AICP v 8 (or 9, can't remember) a few weeks ago.
What fixes (bolded above) did you try, @gcounts? I did the OG5 safe upgrade over a month ago before installing Jasmine 3.0/3.1. After trying AICP 8/9 a few weeks ago and not having luck with Titanium Backup or mobile data, I did a factory reset in TWRP and reinstalled Jasmine 3.1. This morning, I did a factory wipe in TWRP (several times for good measure), and flashed the AICP rom and Gapps. I rebooted to Download mode from TWRP, and flashed the OG5 modem in Odin. At completion, the phone rebooted to AICP. I had LTE data at this point.
1st boot: I had LTE data before starting the initial setup... Upon completion of initial setup, I was on my home wifi, and installed Titanium Backup. I started restoring my 300+ apps, when it got hung on the 3rd one. I rebooted. At this point, I was at work, and did not have wifi to fall back on.
2nd boot: I had LTE data when it rebooted. I started Titanium Backup again, and it got hung up. I tried installing the app that was hung up from the Play Store, and the Play Store would skip downloading, and go straight to "Installing" status, and would hang there. Weird. I know I had LTE at this point because I could search and find results in the Play Store. I rebooted.
3rd boot: It booted, and I had the exclamation point by the signal (no LTE/data). I let it sit for a while, and it said LTE at some point... but I still couldn't search in the Play store. It would tell me I wasn't connected. I rebooted.
4th boot (and several following): No LTE/data connection. I toggle it on/off, wait several minutes... nothing.
Does any of that help to narrow down my issue?
@hsbadr - Do you have an idea of why some of us are having data problems? And... does your custom version with more Verizon tweaks have any hope of addressing this issue?
Thanks

Apparently, your issues are mainly due to restoring apps or device ID via TitaniumBackup app... Report them to the app developer & don't use it for now!
As for flashing the modem via Odin, you may skip it or test different modems. However, this build is only tested & supported if you follow the instructions here.

Hi guys. I recently purchased this phone from t mobile and so far it has been terrible. I cannot return it because I traveled to a different country and there is no T-Mobile here, so I am stuck.
Some issues I have are:
- extreme over heating while simply using the phone to browse the internet.
- battery draining extremely fast, lasting 4 hours Max (basic usage)
I am using the Android revolution rom on 5.1 lollipop and I thought it was supposed too fix these issues. Can someone please tell me how to fix these issues? I feel ripped off and wish I bought an s6 instead
I would say you have a faulty device... ?
Did you flash the new firmware aswell? Not just the rom?

I wasn't aware that you had to install the firmware as well. where can I get it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-red-t3097678
latest firmware. Should help fix issues. If not, it's possible it is device related.
Do you use greenify or any other similar app to hibernate apps when the screen is off? Do you have a lot of apps that sync automatically throughout the day? Have you removed bloatware and other apps that run in the background that you dont use by using titanium backup or romtoolbox?
Simple things like resolving any issues with the above mentioned items can help prolong battery life by a fair bit. Kernel tweaks also help to reduce overheating / cpu usage if you dont require you're phone to run at top capacity.
with overheating you need to keep in mind this is an all metal casing on the phone ... this means it will naturally absorb a lot of heat which isnt always a bad thing as it takes some of the strain away from the phones core. Obviously if its so warm it's hot to the touch then thats definately not good. But doing a full wipe / reset / re-flash etc is worth doing to get you back to basics and then if the issue remains, and you have seen to the above tweaks like using greenify / uninstalling apps you dont need / changing apps sync frequency etc, then it is probably hardward related.

I installed the android revolution rom which has no bloatware, I only have a few apps like facebook, snapchat, and twitter. The rest are never open. I have google syncing automatically. I am also currently in the process of installing the elitekernal that should help the CPU not overheat. Which kernal do you recommend? Can I use multiple kernals at one time? And yes, it eventually reaches the point where its not supposed to be that hot. I can understand if it get warm, but it really shouldn't get to the point where its hot to the touch. I really hope its not a hardware issue because then I'd have to be stuck with it.

as far as i know its a one kernel at a time kinda show.
I have only ever used the kernel that comes with the rom so far so cant recommend any others im afraid.
If after installing a different kernel you have the same issue and you have a set up like you've mentioned, it does sound like a hardware problem. With your setup it should very rarely get that hot unless you do a lot of flashing in a short space of time. My phone only ever gets hot to a point that i notice when i flash and set up a new rom, but it soon returns to normal.
good luck.

While you were still on stock, did you update the phone through Software Updates? You're likely on the originally released version of the firmware, which is probably 90% of your problems. Mismatched firmware/ROM isn't helping either.
Either return the device to stock to be able to take the OTA update, or S-Off ($25 through sunshine) and flash the latest developer edition firmware (2.8.617.4).

Bro. you really got to do some reading before you just start flashing stuff. Elite is NOT compatible with 5.1 roms.
if you are on 5.1, you HAVE to use the stock kernel . There are NO custom kernels for 5.1 yet.
Restore the boot.img from the ARHD rom. Either by restoring from the backup you made before you flashed the elite kernel, by dirty flashing ARHD, or by extracting boot.img from the ARHD zip and flashing it with fastboot.

I did not update the phones firmware. I was doing this whole thing in the first place because I thought updating to 5.1 android would update my firmware lol.
Right now I am trying to adb sideload the android revolution ROM but the phone says "Starting adb sideload feature" and gets stuck there. I have the correct drivers. Fastboot works fine, but I can only flash stock roms with fastboot. Do you have any link for the stock T-Mobile rom?

This will wipe your internal storage, so back it up first, but it's going to be the easiest way to get out of the mess you've gotten yourself in.

FYI-You need to have HTC Sync Manager installed on your computer for the RUU to run (or at least you USED to). If you get error 155 it's likely because it's not installed.
I fixed it by putting android revolution rom on my sd card then flashing it via twrp.
Now I have a simple question:
Does Lolipop 5.1 include all those fixes that HTC introduced? Or do I need to wait for the firmware for that? I am talking about the fixes like camera, overheating, battery, etc.

Firmware fixes those issues, not the rom...or at least you need the firmware for any of the fixes to actually work And using the latest ARHD with 1.32 firmware is likely making some of your issues worse.
There should be one firmware update for T-Mobile right now. But like I said, you'll have to return to stock system image to get the update. Either that or S-Off your phone which will make it possible to update to the 2.8 developer edition firmware which ARHD would run awesome on. The only downside to s-off and using developers firmware is if you use t-mobile wifi calling. For that to work, I think you need official t-mobile firmware.

if you are on 5.1, you HAVE to use the stock rom . There are NO custom roms for 5.1 yet.

Not to confuse the OP, but @jollywhitefoot what do you mean there are no custom roms for 5.1? Did you mean kernal? Another question, Is the new T-mobile update out already? I heard it comes out on the 17th.

Sorry. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I meant to write kernel instead of rom. There are no custom KERNELS for 5.1 roms yet.
I've fixed my original post to avoid future confusion...but hopefully we'll see a custom kernel for this device in a couple of weeks.
You probably know more about T-Mobile update schedule than I do. I'm on AT&T and they're the worst about pushing updates, so I don't even bother keeping up with them.
We probably won't have any custom kernels for a few more weeks. Nothing can happen until HTC releases source, which has been coming a couple of weeks to a month after the OTAs.
Wasn't sure if this would fit better under Q&A, but wanted to get the opinions of my fellow Nexus 5x users who spent some time with stock, unrooted, locked bootloader and then switched to the custom scene and learn just how much better (or worse) the experience was.
I haven't been in the mod game as much since my Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Droid days, when one click root/unlock, custom recovery, flash ROM and flash kernel all took just a few minutes. The guides for the 5x seem a bit more intimidating, especially when it comes to having all the right ingredients to keep Android Pay working. People seem to be saying some really great things about the Cataclysm+ElementalX combo, as well as other ROMs and kernels.
Anyway, before I dive in to the land of full data wipes and avoiding bootloops, I wanted to ask Nexus 5x nation - how's your custom experience, and was it worth it?
I'm using Cataclysm+ElementalX and this
Awesome battery life and screen on time and still very smooth.

That's the route I would be looking to take, I think. Response has been great for the interactive governor mods. Was the whole process (unlock, systemless root, ROM/kernel install) pretty easy, or did you run into a lot of issues? Also, Android Pay still working?

Fairly easy yes, I followed Heisenbergs guide , but if you want a more automated way you could try Wugfresh Toolkit, The systemless root is basically has the sam install process (flashable zip) and ElementalX doesn't conflict with system partition so Android pay should work. And, I don't use Android Pay as my country doesn't have (or maybe) Google Play yet. Didn't stumble to any issues at all.

Unlock, Systemless root, ROM/Kernel is extremely easy. That's why I love Nexus Devices. You'll be able to do it in your sleep after the first couple of times. No issues should arise as long as you do everything in the correct order. Android Pay still works with Systemless Root, again, as long as you follow directions.
I'm running Ubermallow and Phasma Kernel, and after trying many different kernels and a few different ROMs, this is definitely my favorite combination. Fast, extremely optimized, just the right amount of customization and Phasma is one of the most feature-rich kernels out there for this phone. Feel free to experiment, though. Everyone has different tastes and usage patterns. So what works for me, may not necessarily be for you. Luckily flashing new ROMs and kernels takes 5 like minutes so you can give them all a shot!
I can safely say that you'll never want to go back to stock after finding the combination that works for you
Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement, all! I do recall the flashing addiction from the old Moto Droid days with Bugless Beast, AOKP and CyanogenMod. Good to know there are some great options here.
Another question I had regarding upgrading to new versions. When 6.0.2 drops, or one of the monthly security updates, etc., it used to just be a dirty flash over the current ROM, clear dalvik/cache, and reboot system. Am I correct in saying it's more involved this time around? The guides seem to point to a lot more steps for your basic ROM upgrades.

This was my first phone that I modified, mainly because I use Linux, and my old phones seems to need Windows to do anything. I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206930. It worked perfectly, and when I needed to apply the update, I followed step 10 of that guide; worked perfectly, with no loss of data or settings at all.
Then, I flashed Cataclysm over that update, without erasing anything other than cache, and when I finished and rebooted, I thought it didn't work until I checked settings and found the rom's single entry for settings. Nothing else changed.

Rom upgrades are easy.
Download the factory image and extract boot.img, system.img, and vendor.img.
Then, run the following:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
Then reboot into TWRP and flash SuperSu again.
Then wipe cache/dalvik and reboot into system.

I assume fastboot flash radio radio.img if a new radio is included with the update, as well?
After reading through all the awesome resources and recommendations provided by you guys, I think I will unlock, root, install TWRP, decrypt, flash Elemental X, and toy with the interactive governor settings thread that's in the general forum.
That way I can keep Android Pay with systemless root and continue to stay up to date on the latest factory images using Tomyk's note above, is that correct?

You are correct on the radio.img comment
I personally didn't go the systemless route but I think you're on the right track. I know that a lot of people in other forums have successfully kept Android Pay capabilities after everything so you may want to do a bit more digging. If i find the answer I'll post it for you.
Just as a counter point, stock is working well for me and I feel no need to root at this time. Performance and battery life are already top notch. :good:
N5x, EX kernel, unencrypted, systemless root:
much better performance (both due to EKm and no encryption, and to a lesser extent adaway), worse battery life due to issues with nlpcollectorwakelock from Google play services, which may or may not be related to the rom (Didn't have issues with googleplayservices on stock)
just flashed xposed in an effort to curb these wakelocks by means of Amplify.

I've been having problems with Google Play Services battery drain. Since I still haven't taken the leap to unlock and root, I have no way of pinning the wake locks to nlpcollector but that could be my culprit too.
See attached pictures - This happens once every few weeks overnight, and I usually clear apps from memory before going to bed. So much for doze.

it gives me some relief to see that, since that means it's not related to my custom rom, but instead your run of the mill google play services issues..... so hopefully an update to GPS will fix that soon.

Play Services goes through weird phases where it just destroys your battery, and without something like amplify to curb the frequent wakelocks, there's no way around it for the average user. It's a shame.

FYI - it may have been a recent Snapchat update that made that app even worse than normal. Uninstalled it and smoothness and long battery have returned.
