Any way to add exFat support to custom ROMs? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Would really love to have the option to connect a flash drive to my Pixel for movies etc without having the 4GB file size limit.

Stick mount on Google play might work. It's designed by Chainfire, I know it adds support for exFat just not sure if it works on the pixel

Thanks for the idea, I actually found a $0.99 extension for Solid Explorer that worked for me which was great since it was the file explorer I already used. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to let me play movies directly off of it without stuttering but it's a great start.

Was hoping to use that Solid Explorer extension to access photos/videos off of my SD card adapter but no dice. File system is read just fine but viewing JPG photos from my DSLR just gives endless spinning circle icon. Play store link shows an old update date for the extension, have to wonder if an update will come to provide better compatibility for Android N.
I tried Stick Mount, didn't have high hopes considering the last update was back in March. Didn't work for me, crashes and never mounts my card reader.

I have the same problem, stick mout doesn`t work on my device and i want to use exFat on my 64gb usb drive.

Is there a way to copy >4 GB movies onto the microSD card?

Got my Note II. Everything is fine except the screen is too small. I seriously wish was 6 inch.
Anyways, the media player allows me to directly play .mkv movies. But I can not copy movie files onto the microSD that are largerthan 4 GB. Is there a way to overcome it?

Format your card with exFAT & you should be good to go. If you go that route, make sure you are using CWM since TWRP doesn't support exFAT SDCards.

What he said. If you format your card in the phone it will use exfat.

fat32 formatted sd cards which is what most sd cards under 64GB come with can only accept files 4GB and smaller. xsplit works well to split videos its free open source

What does CWM and TWRP stand for?
How do you install CWM on the Galaxy Note 2? Is there a link for this?
cwm is clock work mod. it is a replacement bootloader like the bios on your computer. it requires you to root. i cant remember what twrp stands for but its a competing bootloader.
TWRP= Team Win Recovery Project
Anyone knows a good, reliable software that formats to exFAT? Or does windows offer the option on it's own when trying to format? Still haven't received my micro sd, but I want to be ready for when it arrives.
Also, are there any cons to using exFAT, besides TWRP not supporting it?
the phone itself should do exfat samsung licenses the patent for it from microsoft. the stock format is fat32.

FAT32 is the limitation that will not allow >4GB file size. That is not a problem on exFAT or NTFS, but I'm not sure SGN2 reads either standard.

Can you confirm that SGN2 can read exFAT? It will not present an option to format it that standard. I get FAT32 on my 32GB microSD when formatting on the phone.
<EDIT> I really don't need movie files that large on my phone, I handbrake then down to acceptable sizes <4GB.
My microSD card is formatted with exFAT but I still can't copy larger than 4 GB files...

This looks like a great idea, but I'm wondering how they hold up. (I always worry about losing the caps to my keychain thumbdrives. :silly:
It Works, But
I got one. A nice little piece of kit. But so far it isn't a seemless experience.
The default Apps don't seem to recognize it. Neither Gallery nor QuickPic will find any of the photos on it until I navigate to it using ES File Explorer. Gallery will only show the photo I open from File Explorer. QuickPic will allow me to browse the directory of a photo I select, but not move up the directory tree.
As for music files, Play Music will do so for the file selected from ES File, but won't allow me to search the memory card.

Do u have root on ur Moto X? If so, can you pls give chainfire's stickmount from the play store a shot?
I think it may solve your problem by auto mounting the OTG device on boot.
If it works, I'm definitely getting one for my X too!

Not Rooted Yet
While I got the Developer Edition, I haven't rooted it yet as I'm still deciding whether or not to put either my company e-mail (with their MaaS360 Mobile Device Management) or my client's e-mail (and its Citrix Recevier security - speaking of, what poor reviews!). Either Maas360 will detect Root, or it is just company "policy" to not allow rooted devices, and I'm still trying to find out which is is before I move on things.
I'd thought changing the USB Computer Connection setting in teh Storage settings from Media Device (MTP) to Camera (PTP) might help, but no joy. In fact, I was a bit surprised that there wasn't anything about the attached device there.
And while I'd also like to get Titanium Backup in place, there aren't any ROMs with real appealing capabilities that are pushing me to unlock and root. Now, when there's a Menu patch like Jason Robitaille's Advanced Launcer Options in WebOS, I'll be rooted & ROMing in a heartbeat.

Totally understandable .. I think in theory it should work, but just wasn't sure about motox compatibility with the stickmount and otg setup... Apparently Motorola phones dont seem to work with Carbon/Helium backup so I was wondering if something in the system might interrupt the setup.
hells yeah... Another webOS fan!! So rare to find one these days.. I'm only on Android becuz things went south ... At least matias is design the UI for android now.. And with HP's alleged intention to sell webOS patents, we just might find that Android becomes more webOS-y in the future!
The patch system was awesome! I think Rod Whitby setup Nexus Internals a while back when HP started giving up on webOS... Not sure if they are working on any solutions similar to preware? Closed framework is very similar in concept tho... Have u installed it?

Response from Meenov
I sent a note to the Meenov support site yesterday, giving them a heads-up about the Moto X issue and this thread, and got this quick response:
"Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately that's because Moto X removed certain support for external USB storage, while Moto's other models (Droid series) have better support for external USB storage."
So hopefully the smarter among us will figure out what the problem is and it in a future ROM.

Ok, so I've had mine for about a week now and it works great with my 32GB UHS-1 class card.
To get your media to read in other apps, such as music in Google Play Music, download the app by Chainfire called Stickmount. Mount the Meenov. Second, if you wanna go the free route, download the app called Rescan Media Root and run it. (obviously, you need to have root access) Give it about 10-20 seconds (your Meenov will start to blink) and your music should start appearing in Google Play Music. Just remember to Unmount when you want to remove the Meenov reader. And to remove all your music stored on the card that still appears in Google Play Music, run Rescan Media Root again.
Or, you can just drop $2.49 on the pro version of Stickmount and it will automatically trigger a rescan on mount and unmount.

Since Asphalt 8 stores its files as "data", you can use FolderMount to move the files to a USB drive. Here is a guide on how to do that: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-move-and-run-amazon-fire-tv-apps-from-an-external-usb-storage-drive/

I tried manually linking the Gameloft folder within folder mount. When I opened up asphalt it tried to update my game files and told me I didn't have enough space.
It seems like the foldermount solution doesn't work well because the system still sees the files as available in their original location and using up that space (I think, I'm still trying to figure it out). I should have some time to play around with this tomorrow.

I use foldermount to move my Asphalt 8 data to my usb thumbdrive, haven't had any problems.
As for updating Asphalt 8 you have to load up the default AFTV launcher, and update it from like the home menu, if you highlight it, there should be an update option. It will NOT update for you from inside the game. At least, this is what I had to do, updating from in the game sends me to a link, which sends me to an amazon page, which then says OPEN and no option there to update anything.

[Q] Trick to torrenting?

Hello there!
So i just bought a Samsung galaxy tab S 8.4 SM-T700 version. And i must say, it is beautiful...
But my problem lies in the torrenting, i got a 64 gb microsd card and put it in so that i can download things and i dont have to run my pc cos it eats more power then a tablet naturally. So i downloaded uTorrent to the tablet and it wouldnt let me download, it thinks a little and then says that the files are not found. I've tried 3-4 torrent clients all the same error.
Thinking the client was at fault i downloaded it to my phone (nexus 4) and it worked perfectly, instatnly started downloading.
So my question is that is it the tablets fault that i cannot download? I mean do i have to change some settings or do i have to give up on torrenting on it? If im at it i might also ask that would it hurt the tablet in any was that i torrent on it?
Thanks in advance!
Peace!
Antenora.
Did you change the folder to put the torrent in? It usually tells you when it saids add torrent.
I use Utorrent on my sm-t700 just fine i'd suggest trying a differant network maybe the ports are blocked on the one your trying to use.
Hi
you just can't save torrents into your 64Gb SD unless you are rooted.
anyway it's much better to get torrents on pc. it really drains a lot of battery using lte.
use torrent remote to control torrent client on your pc. works like a champ.

I realise the kitkat SD restrictions, however uTorrent claims to have overcome this - however like the OP I am unable to save to the SD
Appreciate you trying to be power conscious, but your PC does not have a battery that will die in a few years and be a pain in the behind to replace. Your PC is always plugged in and you're not trying to carry it around with you and have to worry about charging it every night.
Yeah I hate it when I ask a question and instead of getting a solution I get unsolicited advice, but in this case, well it makes sense.

I would imagine that it shortens the battery life, but its always going not like my pc, and truth to be told i only wanted to download some anime and maybe some series like flash to it so that i can watch before going to sleep, cos it would have been easier than downloading then copying it to the tablet, but i guess it'll have to do since i cant download until i root it, and that wont be anytime soon.
Thanks for the reply's everyone have a nice day!
Just wanted to let you guys know that I installed xbmc app on my tablet and enjoying streaming of movies from almost all big torrents like kat.ph, pirate bay etc.. watching all new hollywood movies. We can even keep the files on the tablet after streaming. Ip address is not tracked.

batery is not only issue when torrenting. I realised it is a pain to send the 64Gb files everytime to pc or nas. as alternative you can plug an external hd drive to easily increase a few Tbs.

Just got my first Pixel 3 XL - what is this awesome restore via USB?

I've been an Android user all my life, but never have I seen this feature. I booted up my Pixel 3 XL for the first and it said I can copy/restore all my apps/data/calls/logs/sms from my old phone into my Pixel by using a USB cable. No backup needed, no sync needed, just plug and go. I've never seen this option before. This worked flawlessly.
What is this feature? How do I get it to my other non-Pixel Android phones?
It will copy over your app data/photos/sms/ but it won't actually transfer the apps. You still have to download them from the Play Store. I believe this is done to insure integrity of the apps.
It has been available since the 1st Pixel as well.
It's a game changer for sure. I use the cloud restore option. It restores everything (including launcher layout) then reinstalls all of your apps. I only found maybe 25% of my apps didn't have their data restored. Makes doing a factory reset a simple procedure.

It actually didn't copy your apps. It redownloaded them and set them up as you had them set up...and copied the related data.
So yeah, non-playstore apps won't make it.

This is correct, that's why it takes a while to finish restoring the data after you unplug the cable. Everything downloads in the background from the play store.
