Browse file system on PC

Is there any program I can install on Windows so I can browse file system?
Something like this http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&h...6&tbnw=150&start=0&ndsp=29&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0 for iphone.

Samsung makes software like that called Kies. It works on the sgs2...

This is no longer possible on ICS. I think Google made a BIG MISTAKE in ditching USB Mass Storage mode for the dumbed down modes we're forced to use.

so there's no way to see system files on windows ?

okay, first off, do you mean the file system like the SD card where you put your data and where things are downloaded?
or do you mean the actual system folder with the Android OS and downloaded apps, because there is NO way to view that how your asking from a PC.
if you mean the SD card, you can view that just fine. plug the phone into your PC and it'll show up as Galaxy Nexus Internal Storage. the storage you see is equilivant to the SD card on older phones.
it uses MTP however instead of USB mass storage. there is a lot of stupid misconception about this.
MTP allows you to have your entire partition for whatever you want. you can have 16/32GB of apps, or 16/32Gb or your storage. Unlike previous android devices with had to have a set partition for apps and then another one for storage, which meant you could easily run out of space for apps. Like on my Nexus One which only had 198MB of space for apps. MTP also allows your phone to access all of the data while you have the phone connected to the PC.
The disadvantage to MTP is that it CAN be a little slower transferring, and some people have issues with it.
but all and all 90% of the *****ing about MTP is just that, *****ing. I've had no real issues at all with mine and i've transfered everything from music, to pictures to video.
only issues i've had is no thumbnails loading for anything in windows, and crashing when trying to transfer MKVs (which was fixed by erasing divx)

You dont need a silly program to view your iPhone files...just go into folder settings and allow hidden folders to be viewed. Everything will pop right up.
Could the same be done with the Nexus?

as far as i know, there is no way to access anything other than the /sdcard folder.
if you want access to the system files then you need to buy a root explorer/browser from the market and do everything no your phone.

I do that already since I no longer have a dedicated computer and only use my Toshiba thrive. Thanks for that. Ill test the hidden folder thing on Wednesday when I get my GNex

If you want to modify files on your gn over wifi check out airdroid. Its awsome.

Remind me again why there's no SD Card?

It still confuses me as to why Samsung would chose not to include a physical SD card for the Nexus. The convenience of a removeable drive certainly outweigh a virtual one. It use to keep all sorts of different ROMs and stuff stored on my handful of memory cards.
I also just found out I can't transfer anything to my phone via USB on my work computer because it doesn't support MTP. Plus I can't reach 4g at my desk so downloading ROMs over 3g to my phone is going to be a royal PITA

SD cards slow down the phone. But I think there's a way to change the connection to mass storage when you connect to a pc.

what type of work computer do you have? mac or a flavor of *nix?

I was always under the impression that the Nexus is a baseline phone of whats needed to run ICS so they didnt bother to put in a sd card

I've been able to transfer any file from windows 7 laptop to the GNex via USB cord. After plugging in, just tap the 'turn on mass storage mode' icon on the phone and you're in like flynn. I've moved over a few movies. Music was a pain all of mine is in wma format therefore I had to install google music on my laptop and upload my tunes into the cloud to access on my phone.

no, its a unified storage. the phone system, apps, and personal data are on the same partition. this increases accessibility of data that is on the "sdcard"

there is no mass storage on the galaxy nexus.

I'm on a work PC so I'm stuck running Windows XP. It works just fine on my personal computers because they are up to date with the latest drivers. Although, it doesn't really matter cuz when I'm not working I have 4G or Wifi and I can just transfer via Solid Explorer...

Just because you don't know how to access it does not validate it's lack of existance.

Well, this doesn't resolve them from not having an SD Card but I was able to get around my main need for one. I basically just need a way to tinker with ROMs while I'm bored at work. Here's what I did:
1. Disable USB Debugging
2. Use MTP transfer
3. Plug into computer
4. Use File Explore to access Galaxy Media Device
5. Rename the file I want to transfer (usually .zip) to a ".mp3" file.
6. Move the file over
7. On my Nexus I used Solid Explorer to rename the file back to .zip

In Settings >> Storage >> ... >> USB Computer Connection, I see an option for Camera (PTP) with the description stating "Lets you transfer photos using camera software, and transfer any files on computers that don't support MTP" However I've never tried this option I always just use a WiFi connection.

Yeah, I tried that too. The files were all visible in explorer but everything was locked and it didn't actually allow me to transfer anything using it

The computer I use at work is also running XP and has no issue recognizing my GNex when I plug it in.

more to the topic, i don't understand the lack of an sdcard, either. frankly, i fail to understand the rationale as to why one wouldn't be included. if it in any way had to do with read/write speeds, Sammy and Google clearly had to know about the new sdcards coming down the pike, with greatly enhanced read/write speeds. with Boot Manager, and the ability to flash numerous roms, the extra storage space would be nice because the ICS rom files are HUGE.

The lack of ext sd was the deal breaker why I chose the i9100 over the Nexus.
If the next Nexus ships without ext sd then sadly I'm out for that phone too...

i'm sure it wasn't at the top of their priority list. but, at the same time, they made a device without an OEM skin, and gave it an unlockable bootloader. they obviously knew that this would be a developer device. in fact, the Nexus line is generally known as a "developer device," hasn't it?! given the general overall outcry for storage space in smartphones, plus knowing that this would be a developer device, i would think that additional storage would have been something to consider. just my opinion...

it is disappointing, but wasn't a deal breaker for me. ext sd would have been an obvious plus, but 32 gb IS a lot of storage. but, can't really begrudge you for your choice. having to constantly worry about storage space is kind of a pita...

i think that too,he's trolling.
from months it is known that we haven't got mass storage mode,bt not only gnex users,all the honeycomb (or at least the major part..)tablets shipped last year,and all the phones shipped from gnex so on,has mtp storage connections and it's a standard that it's been choosed.i'm with that from last years on honeycomb and like that more than olders connections (pc suite\mass storage)
using win7 and all is ok,only prob is the transfer of many many small files,like icons,instead big files are very fast.heard of problems at using others OS,but luckly it's not my case...

here in italy,with slow connections,it's a pain to store music\images and files on web clouds...slow 3g and not extended wifi-zones me to have all the stuffs inside memory...it's for that that i miss a bit an external microSD.not a so big problem,at least not so big to move on gs2 or another smartphone.like a lot gnex,hate the form factory of gs2 and prefer at all chip\screen(type,resolution and size)\full-touch(no phisical buttons)and google experience debloated from the beginning,but this is another story.dislike as hell the stupid speaker inserted from samsung.I'd like to have a 32 gb version like yours...here in italy only 16 gb version,and with 13 gb when empty i need a little bit more..

Well, if you're running OS X like me, you can use the file transfer utility that google made: android.com/filetransfer
It can be a little temperamental but it will get the job done

KitKat causing SD card problems - woah intentional?

This has got to be the worst move ever made by Google (and I'm a Google fanboy). Makes me frustrated. Samsung is one of the only companies providing micro sd card slots, and now this comes and screws that up. What can you even do with a micro sd card now besides read it...?!

This is horrible.....shame on google

I'll be waiting. No need to rush in and be an early adopter. I wonder how the S5 is handling this/going to.

Google mess it up on purpose, to force people to use their cloud services and be bombarded by their advertising, that's how they make money and their official explanation to improve security is so lame. Anyhow, hopefully Samsung will fix it sooner or later, or you can root it and fix it yourself, loosing warranty in the process. I took the high road and will not update, until a) it's all fixed or b) my warranty runs out and won't care about Knox at all.
Google gets on my nerves lately, first they messed up new maps update (at least I got option to stay on old version for now) and now this.

Google changed it because a lot of folks were having their app data store on the sdcard, which later on caused stability issues with the apps loading. Some resulted in FCs, crashes etc etc. So in order to increase stability, and possibly even security in Android, Google made the move to allow on app data to be stored internally. You can store and do whatever else you want to do on the sdcard like storing music, photos, other files etc etc. App data can no longer be stored on external...
Personally I don't mind, the Note 3 comes with 32GB minimum... That's plenty for me....

I'm guessing it is going to be under your stock gallery app and it's saving to your device.

I still can go to settings and change to save the pictures to the SD card. It's the app data, not pictures that you can't move to an SD card.

These SD card problems are a super-dealbreaker for me, does anyone know a way (via root or whatever) to revert kitkat to previous SD card behaviors? If not, I'm going to have to revert back to Jelly Bean.

If you're rooted there is a fix. it's in the kitkat qa thread in the dev section. Seems to work fine.

Why not force apps to be defaulted to internal unless user unchecks that option for people using developers menu and/or root. Sort of like force gpu rendering option.

Been holding off kk upgrade. Should I let it just go?

On my note 3,i know if 4.4 I will lost root.
My tablet is not rooted but I might like to to get Microsd access and defrost. If looks like if I upgrade, I can still aquire root

It's like a new tablet performance and function wise. All of Samsung's apps have been refreshed and the browser is especially impressive. Multi Window and Pen Window now support the same apps meaning you can have apps open side-by-side or floating and resizable. Without any modifications I now have 35 apps available in Multi Window. On 4.4 you can also install Hancom Office, e-Meeting, Remote PC, and Side sync bringing the N10.1-2014 up to "Pro" level. People are reporting better battery life and shorter charging times also. I did a dirty flash using a ROM from a different region so I somehow kept the lock screen widgets (which should be gone) and lost Daynote (which should be there). My battery was funky at first; not charging overnight and draining way too quickly. The former fixed itself and the latter was fixed when I deleted my Exchange accounts, cleared app data, and rebuilt them. I think my battery life is better now; it's certainly no worse. I'm going to do a recovery and rebuild my N10.1-2014 (it takes about six hours ) once the 4.4 ROM for my region is out which should clear up any funkiness.
As for external SD, it is what it is. Apps can still use it (individually) for storage so you can keep big files there. Samsung's apps (My Files, Samsung Link, Gallery, Video, and Music) still have universal read/write access and can manipulate all external SD files. So with 4.4 there's some added manual administration and you have to come up with new ways of doing things but it's not the end of the world. And it's not going to change. So you have two choices - stay on 4.3 forever and miss out on a fantastic update or bite the bullet and root. After just four days using the update I can't imagine going back.

KitKat on this thing is a beast!! The original software with the note was a joke and I'm glad Samsung fixed everything with kitkat

KitKat looks good, but to me it made my external SD READ ONLY. I can't modify any file, not even copy from the internal to the external.

If you are rooted just install "Folder Mount" from play store, run it , it will fix your sd card issues.

Yes, Samsung My Files will work with ext SD but it doesn't allow you to rename filename extensions so you can rename a .apk to like .zip so you can bluetooth it across and then rename it back to .apk

I'm able to rename any file or move them around from internal to micro sd card, but youre right I can't rename the extension using Myfiles.

Don't bother! I love Jellybean and I love being rooted...I have so many cool apps ...plus with TB I have frozen all the bloat and get like 14 hours out of my tab...Its super fast, no lag and no headaches with KK. I will never upgrade to KK.
I have everything the Pro series has ..have Milk Music ..etc...

Stick mount on Google play might work. It's designed by Chainfire, I know it adds support for exFat just not sure if it works on the pixel

Thanks for the idea, I actually found a $0.99 extension for Solid Explorer that worked for me which was great since it was the file explorer I already used. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to let me play movies directly off of it without stuttering but it's a great start.

Was hoping to use that Solid Explorer extension to access photos/videos off of my SD card adapter but no dice. File system is read just fine but viewing JPG photos from my DSLR just gives endless spinning circle icon. Play store link shows an old update date for the extension, have to wonder if an update will come to provide better compatibility for Android N.
I tried Stick Mount, didn't have high hopes considering the last update was back in March. Didn't work for me, crashes and never mounts my card reader.

I have the same problem, stick mout doesn`t work on my device and i want to use exFat on my 64gb usb drive.

Try this app, it works for me but I also use Solid Explorer.
