Hello All,
its a bit confusing for me. many threads describe that we should "Factory reset" the device before flashing a new ROM. what does it mean ? when i did factory reset my original stock ROM it deleted all my data and brought me an "out of box" phone. now when i have rooted my phone and flashed couple of roms, i just wiped cache and dalvik cache bla bla ... and of course my previous data was there..
actually what i want to do is ... i want to install a stock 4.2 and i don't want any previous data on my phone .. can it be possible ??
A little advice would be grateful ... ... thanks in advance ..
Hi,
Have you ever used the factory image that Google released to flash your phone?
takju has 4.2 factory image now.
You can download it, extract it, connect your galaxy nexus with fastboot mode to pc. Just double click flash_all.bat in the extracted folder if you are using windows.
"fastboot -w" will erase all user data. (include sdcard partition... remember to backup your file in the sdcard before you run this command)
The last fastboot command of flash_all.bat has the "-w" parameter. It'll clean all user data.

Why not use TWP, instead of CWM?

yes i did flashed factory image of 4.1 .. before rooting my phone .. so unlocking bootloader did work for me that time ... i appreciate for what you have guided me to .. but what if i want to use 4.2 roms .. not stock image using fastboot .. and if i use fastboot to erase all things ... will i have to flash recovery again too .. ?
Sorry if it sound dumb ..

They both do and in the context of a custom recovery they wipe data and cache, your sdcard is untouched in this factory reset
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
go in the dev section download the 4.2 factory image zip.. then in cwm or twrp
wipe data
wipe system
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
flash the factory image
reboot
As far as I know all custom Recovery's leave your sd card untouched so unless u flash a factory image or relock/unlock or bootloader there's no way to reset to a factory state. Another method is to flash just the stock recovery using fast boot then factory reset using that then flash cwm again

@k786: Flash the factory image? Thought it could only be done through fastboot. Is there something I missed, like making a zip file with a factory image? If so, how? Tnx.
What people mean when they say to do a factory reset before flashing is to choose that option in your recovery. It removes your previously installed apps and configurations so that you are starting from a known configuration. They are not telling you to restore the factory rom for an "out of the box" configuration.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Okie .. i got that ... i use to wipe cache and dalvik .. etc... and its called factory resetting when flashing a rom ..
But what if i want to delete the contents on my phone's storage .. particularly in sd card folder .. obviously nexus has no physical sd card to format .. and it cant be mounted either to copy a flashable zip like i used to do with my wildfire ..
One option above was locking and unlocking boot loader again .. will it work now after rooting and custom recovery and custom rom .. ??

Hello.
I was running cm9 for a few months without problems. But since the update from Januari the 13th apps started crashing.. I then tried to completly reinstall (wipe everthing), but got stuck on bootloop. Then I thought lets try cm10, and also I get stock on the booting screen.
These are the steps I did.
Flashed LT26i_6.1.A.2.50_1257-5499_WORLD.ftf to go back to stock rom.
Went trough the wizard and all and let it settle down for a few minutes.
Shutdown.
Fastboot boot.img from FXP202-cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip
Fastboot reboot
Enter recovery
Flash rom FXP202-cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip
Flash gapps gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik
Reboot system
But it never boots, I get stuck on bootscreen (same procedure I did with CM9, but also got stuck on bootscreen),
What am I doing wrong?
Try doing full wipe and reinstall CM 10 as you did previously

I tried that too. Like this you mean
1. Fastboot boot.img
2. Fastboot reboot
3. Enter recovery
4. Factory reset
5. Wipe/format system, cache, data, dalvik
6. Install Rom zip
But then I get error and says installation aborted..

And take that cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL is CM 10.2 for such reason look for JB Gapps For Android version 4.1.2
I flashed the Rom very well, also the kernel. my problem were the Gapps. I see there that you do not have the correct gapp zip for cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL;This is CM 10.2 after installation and you need a 4.1.2 JB Gapps. Try and repeat the process.

I do have the correct gapps. This CM is android version 4.1.2. Here I downloaded the latest for CyanogenMod 10.0.x which is for android versions 4.1.x.
Anyway after a whole evening/night of flashing I finally managed to get it working via hei1125 cm10 version:
http://goo.im/devs/hei1125/nozomi
I dont know what I did to make it working again, but it does.. CM10 does look a lot nicer then CM9. Although I heard it has some bugs, which yet I still have to encounter..
FXP202-cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip fails

I'm on the same problem. Use FXP201 instead or wait until 203... The cm10-fxp202 doesn't work on my device too. Same procedure as Yours or update from 201 to 202 - all will fail on (my) nozomi.
Hello!

Hello,
I have a problem updating my nozomi (xperia s) to the newest cm version. I always get error 7 - some symlinks failed and i cant install an update without factory reset / wipe user data. After this step i can install the zip, but without wipeing, always the same error.
When i'm installing updates on my girlfriend's urushi (xperia ray), everything works fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Enable signaturecheck in recovery before install. It worked for me.

It's always recommend to wipe all (cache, davlink even system) then flash.
Be sure to mount system and then try.
And of course, check is you zip file o.k (maybe download again)
Even if you updating cm to new version it's best if you wipe.
I know that's lot of work, but only then you'll have good battery life, smooth and fast ROM and stability.

I had just the same problem today. I installed cm10 from recovery and did everything you did!!!!
What i did to solve this prblem is:
- Went into recovery.
- wiped cache and dalvik.
- flashed the latest CM10 (FXP215 to be precise) again!!
- flashed gapps again!!
- after flashing both zips I wiped dalvik and cache again.
- Than reboot.
If you keep getting into bootloops, keep doing these steps. Beliefe me man I had the exect same problam today and this solved it . Just dont panic or do something stupid and have alot of patients! :good:
But this is not a so called clean install. I use factory reset to have a clean install or just wipe data partition. After 1st boot I restore only some of my saved data with titanium backup.

HI everyone
I made a mistake yesterday, I flashed a wrong kernel ( the F4ktion dedicated to the CM11 versions while I was 10.2 (I didnt pay attention to the mention JB).
The phone rebooted and stucked on the samsung logo. Then, screen slowly turning gray.
Having access to the download mode, I flashed the bml4 rom stock (probably the main mistake) but this time the phone was stuck on the second samsung logo without turning gray.
Last point, it is impossible for me to get to recovery mode, download fashion meanwhile is still accessible.
Is there a solution?
Thanks
I'd download a stock image of the firmware, install it using Odin and download mode, then flash TWRP recovery, format everything, and install the original firmware again using Odin. That way, you'd make sure your phone is completely clean of errors. Also, is format the micro sd as exFat.
Hope it helps

You didn't need to ODIN the stock ROM back. You could've just reflash the correct kernel and wipe cache/davilk and it should work. What I would recommend you do know is flash a custom recovery and do a complete wipe than ODIN again.

I don't get it, why format the MicroSD card as exFAT? FAT32 works just fine unless you have a 32GB+ card.
Hi
Thank's for your answers.
I'd like to keep the data on my sd card, so I have done the wipe cache and dalvik but still the same problems.
In your opinion, flash the cyanogen rom be able to fix this problem or isnt recommended?
If you have other opinions so I do not reset everything I'm interested. (Flash of good kernel, flash of f4ktion?..)
Otherwise I will resolve to do the full wipe.
You could try getting a stock kernel and flash it using Odin. I'd that doesn't work, i think you should full wipeand reinstall the firmware. I think you could also flash am original firmware image without wiping and that could fix the errors.

If you wiped davilk/cache and still doesn't work, it looks like you have to do a full wipe - no other ways around.
Just to clarify, you want to keep data on the internal storage or SD card? Full wipe does not wipe SD card unless you specifically tells it to.

Internal storage...and flash a cyanogen rom couldnt be a solution?
You still will need to flash a custom recovery first.
Than, if you want, you can install Cyanogen of course, it comes with kernel and all..
Just be sure that you are ready to switch the whole ROM

With a soft brick like stuck at boot animation, generally no. You need to do a clean wipe.

Download the N factory image and extract it. Use fastboot to first flash the bootloader. Then re-boot into the bootloader. Then flash the boot, system, radio, and vendor images. It's always good to back everything up first, just in case. You might have to uninstall then re-install some apps. You'll have to re-flash twrp and SU.

He literally just explained step by step how to do it. You can do it this way or use ADB sideload like I did. Some apps needed to be reinstalled, but all of my internal storage was kept.
Okay thanks

I am on 3.2.8 Rooted with TWRP.
Whats the best way to upgrade to 4.1.0? Is it possible without wiping whole internal storage? I am bit tired of finding it directly everywhere hence creating a new thread.
I would not recommend this. You are doing a major system change, this isn't just an update, it's a complete different OS. Do a full wipe and install the full rom zip via TWRP 3.1.0.0.

no u do not have to fully wipe internal storage, just Cache, System, Dalvik and Data, u will need to reinstall all ur apps so i recommend Titanium Backup, but no ur internal storage and files will not be erased unless, i recommend using FreedomOS or Experience Rom
