Zenfone 2 cannot start up - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Need some help with my Zenfone 2 ZE551ML 4GB/32GB.
Decided to flash Nougat custom ROMs so followed these steps
Connected phone to PC and ran MM BL upgrade. It completed successfully.
Rebooted to BL, then rebooted to recovery, saw the new 3.0.2-M1 TWRP.
Went to TWRP and activated Sideload, ran ADB sideload command to load Nougat DU. It completed 100%.
Proceded to sideload gapps but connection failed. Maybe need to reactivate sideload in TWRP again.
Touched USB cable and the phone switched off. Ever since then it does not boot up and screen does not light up anymore.
Phone was on MM RR, BL unlocked. Battery was at 100% when performing the above actions.
Is there anything else (other than bringing it to ASUS) I can do to revive the phone?

Hi , I'm in a rush here , just one question to start ..
Can you get into bootloader via buttons not connected to charger ?
Do you know how to ?
Ps , you don't need to sideload roms in twrp , you just install them after usual wipes.

I can't. The way is to press the volume up and power buttons at the same time, and release the power button when the phone vibrates after a few seconds.
On my phone there was no response whatsoever.
Yeah I know I don't have to sideload ROMs, but I was lazy to copy it to the SD card.
Plus I had plans to wipe the internal SD card, so didn't copy there either...

Sounds like you are bricked my friend
but do try holding power button and vol for a good length of time...then power button too on its own for some time..
If and when you get two vibes , if no boot loader
Check unbrick threads .
If get bootloader , scroll to recovery select it .
Next time download roms to fone
safer !

I think kernel is in panic mode. Try disconnecting the battery for a little while and then reconnect it. You'll have to open your phone to do it. There are many YouTube videos to see how you can do so. It's not that difficult. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat... no even LED while connected to the charger... Already disconnected the battery and closed again. No joy. Is this a "deep brick of death"?? Its too expensive to give away without fight a little. Any help is more than welcome

There are threads on xda that describe how to revive hard bricks.
For me, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery had worked.
Please make sure that battery is connected perfectly.

Sometimes , leaving on charge brings at least the two vibes back eventually
That's enough to start xFSTK unbricking process.
Besides the already mentioned battery disconnect.
I seen one guy revive by disconnecting USB board too

Looking at unbricking threads.
Problem is the PC was unable to detect the phone in IntelSOC mode. Absolutely no response.
I will try different OS and machines though

You mean leave it connected to PC to charge until the two vibes came back?
I originally did have the two vibes, but the phone was connected to the charger at that point.
Unfortunately I don't have the vibes even connecting to the same charger now.
I believe the solution now is to try to recover the bootloader and restore the OS.
Question is how to get it detected in PC in IntelSOC mode.
Things to try:
Disconnect battery
Disconnect USB board
Try different PCs and OS

I'm sorry to hear that. I will try to disconnect the battery to see if I have more luck.
It was also mentioned that disconnecting the USB board worked for one guy.

When you get two vibes back , you can install isoc driver and your PC will recognise it.
In the early days before unbricking knowledge of zen 2 , I also witnessed the same , blank screen no vibes
What I did was leave it on charge , every hour or so ..press power plus vol plus , quick press , then after a longer press , if nothing then just power , quick press and a longer press.
Then I awoke to the vibes
Once the vibes start , then its install isoc , don't install xFSTK downloader until driver is set up
PS , that was before we found discon of battery method and still had warranty

Can I ask how many times you tried before getting the two vibes back?
And it was connected to the PC's USB port?
I asked because I did have the vibes when connecting to the wall charger.
But it went away when I then connect to the PC. And now there are no vibes even when connecting to wall charger.

Leave on charge , means exactly that, leave on charger .
Leave it on a full day , if fone gets warm its charging .
Try all the stuff already mentioned.
Some people have give up , thrown fones in draw and 3 months later come back to life.
Some people hot wired battery straight to charger too, but that's off limits .
There is nothing straight forward that works for everyone , here is a few exanples of what revived many fones ,you pay the price for being lazy
We all learn the hard way

You can follow 2 methods.
Easy but time consuming method:
Connect your phone to charger and wait untill it automatically reboot. The flash ftf file. (It may take 10-15 hours or more to reboot)
Difficult but fast method.
Dessemble your phone. Remove/disconnect battery cable from your phone. Reconnect it. Connect it to flashtool as fast as you can and flash ftf file.

Hi guys i plug in my phone with charger for 12 hours.but after 12 hours orange led come up and the orange led automatically turn on or turn off continuously.when i try flash my phone with flashtool, my phone doesn't go in fastboot mode.please help somebody guys.....
You need to look for the bricked thread in general. You have two options
1. Take it apart and undo the ribbon cable.
2. Go through the steps in the bricked thread but it will take a long time and you have to plug it into the factory charge block not your computer.

As avik said you need to let it charge. You are in a soft brick state so you will need to put it on the factory charger and let it charge until you get a response from it. If you mess with it before it is ready you will only make it a longer process.
I would not try changing the font unless you are on a de odex rom. If you try to change things on a factory rom you will most likely get a boot loop.
After doing a bit of reading on the app why in the world would you even try it?? So many reviews saying it bricked the device and yet you still tried it?? Make sure you read thoroughly before you go trying out stuff. Every response for a newer device is claiming a brick so use your head.
Even i have the same problem which was said by user:avik6123 . what does reboot technically refer to is it just seeing red led light over the mobile or will it switch on automatically. i have got the red led but when i connect it to system with usb cable holding volume down key it doesnt show the green led (flash mode). only the red led is on as if it is charging. can u please help me out??
Just find the soft brick thread at the top of this forum...it'll solve nearly any software related problem you're having...its just a matter of being patient and letting the phone battery completely die...
The main soft brick most owners run in to is trying to hard reset the phone when the device is in a state that you shouldn't do that...holding volume down for 10 seconds with the power button for 3 vibrates is a sure way to completely trash the kernel if the phone is in some sort of problematic state...
you then need to make sure the phone is not responding to anything...no button presses or combinations give any sort of response...then put the phone on the WALL charger...if the battery has not died yet, you'll get no LED when plugged in...don't worry about it being plugged in, this is NOT charging the phone yet...its just a good gauge for when the battery completely dies...after 10+ hours, the LED should start to blink red...leave it on there...after another couple of hours, it should turn solid red...now you're getting somewhere...
you can either get flashtool ready and try to start flashing back to a 'safe' firmware and/or just the kernel...or leave it on the charger until its solid green...which will remove any threat of the device having enough battery to complete the charge...If you take the phone off when LED is solid red, but still not getting into flashmode properly...its need to charge a little longer, and always use the wall charger for this...it charges much faster...
NEVER try to start the phone in this state, though...you'll end up right back where you started...the brick is happening because of corrupted boot data, which will be on the device until you flash over it...the hoops you have to jump through to fix it is all because of having a sealed battery...thats why it takes so long and is so annoying, but what is causing the problem is actually very simple to fix...you just have to be patient and read all the tutorials in order to get out of it...
You don't need to put your phone to charge for like several hours, that's bull, just flash another ROM. I've done it so it works even with 0 % battery power. So anyone who want's to comment my advice, get lost.
press all button

I would recommend attacking a rubber band around the volume down button while connected to the computer where flash tool is already in the flashing mode. This way, it will immediately flash as soon as it can.

@Shortie71
In order to even contemplate flashing, you NEED i repeat NEED flashtool.
http://www.flashtool.net/download.php
You MUST download it to flash anything onto your phone
The issue you are having is a drivers issue.
My recommendation is to ask in the MAIN question and answers thread about where and how to get drivers since your phone is already soft bricked (installing sony pc companion and inserting phone will therefore not work)
Then, you can properly flash after you have the proper drivers

Asus Z00A bricked

Hi guys, I had my bootloader lost so i followed this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-brick-soft-hard-bricked-zenfone-2-t3284256 and it worked like a charm except for flashing OS part, on fastboot it said 'Result: Okay' but in AFT it said 'That interface is already detected in UI, please delete it and reconnect device' so I did it and still the same so since the result was okay in fastboot I wanted to try get into recovery hoping it'll start-up and just when I pressed 'vol up' button it didn't even change the choice in fastboot, screen just faded out and phone isn't even charging now, adb doesn't see it, fastboot isn't booting up, no vibration, PowerBank is detecting the device and is power draining -> phone even is heating a little like it is charging but no screen/led :crying: Help me guys, pls

You are now bricked.
What you need to do is get the 2 vibes back at least , then your device will be seen for xFSTK downloader to re flash again.
Try charge overnight from wall charger.
Press power for a good length of time and restart the flash if you get the 2 vibes back.
Watch the video closely in the first 7 mins, I suspect you had normal bootloader tho.
Temp ifwi version after flash is 0094 0169 .
What was yours ?

Reason i suspect you got normal bootloader is because after success of OS you get four colours before bootloader , which you dont mention and i have witnessed flashing ifwi and fwr dnx and it booting into bootloader without success of OS , that bootloader version was not the temp one needed to flash raw or atleast the OS partitions correctly ready for raw. Point being , i thought i was bricked but wasnt , just a temp death blank screen situation and then getting success in ifwi and fwr corrupted the device further , so a full re flash in xFSTK and success fixed it.
Getting the two vibes back is a bit hit n miss , nothing straight forward -- battery gets hammered flashing in xFSTK and usb charging isnt enough plus the fact your device might be on, yet shows no signs although it will be recycling itself till death without the juice to vibrate .
pressing power for a good length of time after a good charge , you might get one vibe depending on the state of off or on while on charge, i have had the vibes kick in halfway thru the night.
Some people have disconnected battery and reconnected to get success in xFSTK
good luck :good:

If device warmed up while on charge , then it will be charging , maybe disconnect battery and reconnect trying xFSTK.
If not warming then it's a hard wire charge like mentioned .
Well, it's working now, I had to reconnect battery and it came out that OS has been flashed but battery had an error, after reconnect it booted up like nothing happened, thanks to all of you for help

Hard bricked and Solved.

First things first, NEVER RESTORE A TWRP BACKUP YOU CREATED IN ONE VERSION IN ANOTHER VERSION.
Now coming to my situation, I installed the Deodexed Stable Zui Oreo ROM but as usual got bored with the zui and wanted to go back to my fav Pixel experience Rom so I clean flashed it from the unofficial hendibudi recovery but I couldn't use my internal storage and I once earlier read in another thread that installing 3.0.3 decrypts it so I installed that recovery and clean flashed AEX5.2 Rom this time and same internal storage problem continued so my lazy ass thought I'll restore the TWRP backup I created when I unlocked the bootloader instead of flashing through qfil and that was my mistake.
I created the backup on 3.1.0 but now I was on 3.0.3 so as soon as I restored the backup and rebooted, my phone didn't turn on, no zuk logo or led or anything, if I long press the power button it just vibrates and the led flashes for a sec, that's all.
Edit: feels like this thread belongs to the News/Discussions section than here but meh
Edit2: Solution in Post #4
It seems like qfil, mi flash method is last as your bootloader is also corrupted, and this happens because there are many critical hidden partition on our device so it mess up, when you install first twrp releases, you will notice there are 7 8 partition and in latest one they all are hidden.

well if it's that easy I wouldn't be worried at all but unfortunately my situation is a bit different, I can't flash anything as my phone is recognized as 900E, to flash anything the phone should be recognized in 9008(edl) mode and for that I have to strip the cable and short circuit with it and all that, which is really a hit or miss kinda situation so kinda worried!
But seems like I have no other choice so let's see what happens, I tried stripping the stock usb cable and it got split into half lmao
now I'll buy another cable and will try the copper wire method instead of splitting it
Edit: yeah ik that different versions of TWRP are different but I wanted to restore only the data partition and my data was already encrypted so I thought I have nothing to lose, I was like if it doesn't work I'll flash the full firmware again but didn't expect it to fully brick the phone
Okay the primary reason for me creating this thread was to let y'all know how I bricked my device so that y'all won't repeat my mistake but I saw some people here and there recently asking how to resurrect their device so thought I'll share how I got mine working wishing it'll help such people.
My phone was completely dead, the hardware buttons weren't doing anything, the phone doesn't power off but all I could see was a black screen, so I had to follow THIS GUIDE.
But the above situation is a rarity, I guess most of you ppl could get to the zuk logo or your led keeps flashing and you can use your hardware buttons, in such situations, follow THIS GUIDE.
The above links are for you to get your phone to 9008 mode to be able to flash the stock firmware, but if you don't know how to flash,
refer THIS GUIDE.

Only one solution is there.. after u get sahara error.. disconnect your phone and cable, then again turn your phone on. And then turn it off... After that press volume up+ power button simultaneously while connecting to the usb port, if you are successful, within 2-3 seconds you have to press the download button on QFIL.. then it should work... You can try 2-3 times... For demo, but thia is the only way out of this hard brick
.. i suffered in the sahara error for 3 days since i flashed OOS on my z2 , till today i finally got the solution

Not 2 minutes but i think 30 seconds at max.. and by successful i mean that you get into Qualcomm 9008 qdloader mode in qfil
---------- Post added at 05:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:11 PM ----------
The main thing is you have to immediately press the download button(within 2-3 seconds) after reconnecting into 9008 mode

You don't need to flash via qpst when you see logo but device wont boot it mean you locked your bootloader so all you need to do is unlock it again that's all

Unfortunately learnt this after unbricking my device
I had installed RR mix rom in my Zuk Z2 plus. while trying to enter fastboot mode, it went off. Now it is completely dead. not being recoganized in my PC.In device manager it is not shown. Tried to deep flash through Qfil, but didn't recoganize port.If i plug in charger also no LED indication, If I disconnect battery & plug in for charging, white LED slowly blinks, in the same mode if I connect charger blinking white LED continues. But once I remove charge & reconnect it shows nothing. again if I remove battery & reconnect, again white LED starts blinking. Apart from this nothing is shown, phone completely dead. Can anybody help please. I tried through Qfil, tried by shorting black & green cable, all types of key combinations.

Device redmi 1s dead please help !!!!!

Accidentally my phone droped on the floor after that it kepps the mi logo loop after some time the battery got dead and phone also not charging. While connecting to the charger cable the led blinking and looping. Buy my phone doesn't charging and while on the flash process without battery the fastboot mode opens and closes rythmically.and my computer doesn't take the time to load the drivers. Now what to do feeling dizzy....
Please help me out of this problem. I think it bricked but not hard. Because the fastboot logo comes but not more than 5 seconds it goes off. Please help
Try giving it to a local repair store.
I also had the same problem. If I used to remove and put the battery back, it used to reboot. I tried flashing using fastboot, but it used to reboot every 6 seconds. According to some friends of mine (Thanks to them) I gave it to a store, which in turn (I dunno how) hardbricked the device. I connected it to the PC, tried to go to fastboot, and it shows up as QCOM Loader 9008, which basically tells you your device is hardbricked.
Fastboot didn't work.
Using MiFlash Tool, while flashing through the QcomLoader, it showed "Did not receive hello packet"
Tried many times more, didn't work out.
So, I went and tried the trusted method: TEST POINT method.
It worked out. Now my armani is up and running!
TL : DR;
Try giving it to a local repair store (not Mi service center, they didn't help me AT ALL.)
Something might have dislodged.
Or
Try testpoint method, google for it
it *might* work. Well, that worked for me.
Not end at all
Hi, sorry for very late reply
Recently I discovered that the battery is dead not working at all. And while doing the test point method I think battery power is needed! So I ordered a spare battery after the delivery I will do the test point method agian. Currently if I plug in my phone thorough usb to my computer the qcom 9008 port shows but while flashing it gets detached then re shows up . And the flashtool error happens. I think a battery power is required so that this failure is happening.
So, what do you think is edl mode requires battery power?.
Need help because I have to fix it. It's my one and only loved phone of all time.
Currently I am using my friends phone to discuss about this matter.....please help me.....

You do not need battery power for test point method.

I am Trying to drain the battery using the rubber band holding the power button.
but it taken 4+hrs already but still not fully drain the battery.
To add the Download process on QFIL was more than 50% when there was error.

now the thing is that its fully drain but even tried charging/connecting to pc no detection found.
Even there is no zui logo even if i charged it again for 1 hr.
even in normal case the device is not being recognised by pc there is nothing indicated by pc that something has been plugged in.
(to add pc ports are working fine, usb c type is also fine only problem with device)
has been fully discharged again what to do now.
Try deep flash by using some kind of deep flash cable,it worked for me:victory:

Try the short circuit trick while battery is discharged or zero, although it is quite difficult to confirm so when the phone's dead
