Just curious! As the htc 10 does not have an AMOLED panel. Is there any advantage at all to using dark mode within certain apps / using black wallpapers??
none that I'm aware of.

Yeah iam guessing it will make NO difference with regards improving battery life! Although iam actually content with this display.... i do wish it was amoled
Can anyone else confirm or deny that it has no affect at all on lcd panels?

I would say that it will make a difference but it'll be marginal. Making a screen light up white vs a dull black I would assume would use less power.
No it's not amoled but there should be a difference, however slight.
I always go blacked out on all my phones, just looks better.
I think there is no effect, since it is an lcd. Backlight would always be on no matter what wallpaper you put, it will still consume battery.. Not like amoled, every black part of the screen, means that led is off.. Correct me if im wrong..

That is correct, however different colours use different amounts of power however marginal.. White would use the most as its top of the spectrum, black being the least.
Sure I read black uses more on LCD but it'll be marginal

Black does use more than amoled but vs white it would use less.
Some literature to support my claim.

...so black wouldn't save any battery......reverse on oled

hiii,
i bought my note 2 on 29-1-2013
now what i noticed in my screen,
there middle 10% part is shaded with 1% opacity,
if we look closely then it's not noticable as u seen from far,
from naked eyes is too difficult to see,
its not like Colours are gone, only looks like shade,
if i increase brightness to 100% then the small shade like finish.
i m confused that it is defected or not,
is that Normal, does nay body heard that type of case,
Please make me happy, tell me that it is Normal,I dont wana give my phone to bad service guys.

yellow tint
I have that yellow tint that the link is describing due to the glue during the manufacturing process. I'm able to see it when looking directly to the screen. When the screen is slightly angled away, that yellow tint is gone. I hope it will be resolved on future updates.

Can't say what's your problem without any pictures but yes, AMOLED displays differ from device to device, and it's still immature, unlike LCD displays.
And yes, mine has Yellowish tint too.

This can only be resolved with a color temperature change, up to now im still wondering why the color temperature on the Galaxy Note 2 devices vary so much from phone to phone and no its not the glue. From where I live this is valid with in the 7 days of replacement provided that the next unit they open up is not yellow. But if im in a pitch black room or no 'warm' light sources there are no traces of this warm color temp.
Mine has no yellow tint, mine looks like middle area of screen is grey shaded, I checked, protector is ok, but screen middle area is very slightly shaded. Very difficult to see, when we scroll fb or youtube(down to up) then its noticable... most in plane white background...

Like I already said in another thread to your query, this is normal. If you can't distinguish this from the naked eye (during normal use), this is definitely normal. I'm sure you are keeping the display in low brightness; this brightness uniformity issue exists on virtually all AMOLED displays, and the Mura Effect does have some attribute to this as well. Rumors say that the Samsung's Flagship Devices this year (2013) might feature an SLCD3 instead of AMOLED. Might indicate that AMOLED displays still need further refinement. If the shade is not so prominent, you should not worry about it then. Every Note 2 has this, those that say they don't see the shade are not looking close enough. I call this AMOLED phenomena a Samsung-kind-of-thing for a reason.

No, this tablet should look like any other phone or device as far as the screen goes, actually it should look better due to the better resolution. I would suggest just returning your device for another one.
If you're used to samoled screens blacks might seem a bit less dark since the note 10.1 2014 has an LCD. It's a different technology but the blacks are very good for an LCD. So maybe go to a shop and compare it to see if yours are different?

Hi guys, I just bought the G3 international and I love it, awesome device. But I'm really disappointed with the display. Yes, the 2k resolution is amazing and I find the color reproduction OK, but the problem is there's literally no black, it's blue instead. I know it's not amoled, but I expected some sort of black from an LG ex-flagship device, instead of the blue of chinese low end devices. I don't see anybody talking about this, wich is weird to me given that it was a flagship device, and the issue is really noticeable. It bothers me a lot. So here's my question, is there any way to calibrate the screen so I can make the "black" less blue and more like actual black? Like using kcal or something similar? The built in settings do nothing.
Thanks a lot!

Do you have your device rooted? If so, you can try kcal by yourself. I'm not sure if I wanna root it for now.
Without rooting, I don't know of a way to do this. If you do decide to root and unlock bootloader, if you flash a custom kernel, some have support for the type of display calibration you want, through an app called "Kernel Adiutor". Besides this, I'm not aware of a way to do that.

If you're coming from an AMOLED device it might be difficult for you to get used to G3's LCD, the things you can do if you're rooted is change saturation, contrast, dispaly value, hue and color calibration but it won't make black look like if the screen is off like in AMOLED. Although, you say that black reproduction is more like blue... maybe you got a faulty screen mine doesn't look like that just like a dark gray...

Yep at 100% and it looks more like gray than blue, but maybe our color perspective is different. You can try with another LCD display like a TV at 100% brightness and compare them to see if the black looks the same

I also have a Moto G 2015 and on which the black looks dark gray. I didn't like Moto's display at first but when I compare it to the G3's display I like it better in terms of black reproduction(while far from displaying black, it's closer to black than blue). So I assume it's not my eyes' fault, maybe I have a faulty display. I rooted the device and installed cm13. I'm gonna play with kcal app a bit.

Just bought a new Zplay 1 week ago. I noticed on dark (not total black) colors that my top right screen corner is a bit brighter that the other parts of the screen. This brightness expands from right too to the middle. My question: is it fixable? Should i ask for a replacement device from Motorola's service (will they accept it?) or stick with this device and live with that? From previous experience from other services, usually i got the older phone back in worst condition than it was before. Anyone else with same problem?
I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
Btw, fantastic device :fingers-crossed:
Amoled displays cannot have backlight bleeding since they have no backlight. Try downloading a pure black image, turn your brightness to maximum (no auto brightness) and see what you get. If you can still see something, then you might have a defective oled display. Motorola customer service might try to turn you down with the usual "Back light bleed is totally normal (it is normal on IPS LCDs to an extent)", since they more than likely dont know the difference between an IPS LCD and an AMOLED.
Or you could try turning up your brightness to maximum and just activate moto display and see if you can see anything.

On pure blacks i see nothing. The display is perfect. On the other hand i get to see a difference on other colors, mostly darker greys, for example on Chrome's empty tab panel where the color is a bit gray, there the problem can be seen. I'm don't know if this is natural or not. I will upload some pics to get an idea

Could be screen temp issue. Maybe wasnt calibrated correctly.
Id suggest get a screen test app , bring up a white color and see if that side has a yellow tint. If so its a color temp issue or also could be color distortion. Get a new one.

My moto z plays dispay is slightly on the warmer side (whites are not pure white, a bit of yellowish). Initially i haven't noticed this but when compared this with redmi note 3 then i can see the difference where redmi note 3 colours are more vibrant. Is it normal? Or some issue with the screen?
I just checked m display and it's full black like the deep space, which was obvious since is an AMOLED display and all black pixels turn off to not show anything when they are black.
Ur Moto-Z seems like it was a LCD version lol! Good u get ur money back.

AMOLED displays always has to be TOTAL black, since there is not lamp providing light like in LCD and LED panels.
Obviously, there is a problem with the screen. If it does not affect the use, it does not matter, but if you can not accept such a screen, you can replace a new moto z play screen by yourself. This is a maintenance tutorial for moto z play screen. You can watch this to learn how to repair your moto z play.

try this one Swift Black Substratum Theme +Oreo & Samsung theme
I don't remember how it was on original KitKat 4.4 version but neither my last rom (CyanogenMod 12.1 android 5.1) nor the one I installed yesterday (LineageOS 17.1, android 10 which works pretty great) seem to have the ability to turn the black pixels off.
No matter how black the picture is, there is always some light being emitted. Although to much smaller extent than an LCD display. Could this be an software issue or is the hardware just not capable of doing it? It's OLED, isn't that what it's supposed to do? Have any of you guys experienced the pixel off thing?
I noticed the same while flashing ROMs on that thing in the dark. When it reboots you can notice some sort of backlight turn off and when it starts booting that little bit of backlight turns on again. It isn't noticeable at all in daylight. Not sure but my opinion is that it is indeed an AMOLED and the technology is just old for its age and doesn't compare with newer flagships.

But that's the thing, OLED literally is a technology where there's no backlight like LCD. All pixels light up individually. So there's no reason for whole screen to light up when there are some pixels who are supposed to be pure black.
I still think it could just be the software that's stopping screen from displaying fully black colours, but I am not exactly sure either. Maybe someone knowledgeable in this field could clear it up.
It's definitely OLED, the original ROM did not turn off the pixels correctly, but I'm using LOS 16 stable and it does turn off pixels. Also, since the phone is getting old I'm starting to see burn-in in the notification bar, so that definitely confirms it's OLED, just not as good as today's screens.

Interesting, but are you absolutely sure about that? Can you got into a dark room and trying watching a pitch black image in full screen? You can then lock the screen to notice any difference. Because in my experience it doesn't turn completely off.
And I've experienced absolutely no burn in, although that could be due to me not using phone that much but it's still strange.

Yep, just did it to confirm, it's actually black.
Here's a video of it, unfortunately I had to convert to a lower bitrate as you'd be able to see the burn-in on the top where the status bar goes and blacks would be a bit black but trust me, it's absolutely off and it's OLED.
