Blacks are not completely black

Previous to my GN, I've had a Nexus One, Nexus S, and Galaxy S II (international version) and on all of the phones black levels were pitch black and no different to the screen being completely off. Despite still being an AMOLED display, it seems the GN's screen can't do pitch black.
As a test, go in a dark room and open the clock app. Long press anywhere on the screen and the clock will go into night mode where it will be a completely black screen with just the time showing. You'll notice that there is a still a bit of light emitting from the dark spots.
A little disappointing... I wonder if this could be fixed in software.

It can do pure black but not everything is pure black. I just rebooted and say the Google boot image. Its solid black. I'm in a dark room now and can't tell a difference where the soft keys end and the case begins.

Actually that's just the clock app, you can easily see that it's an extremely dimmed version of your wallpaper. My wallpaper is this http://cooldesktopbackgroundsx.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/34327523.png
and I can easily see the eye in the dark mode.

I don't see how your background could make a difference. Night mode is completely black. Just look at the screen shot.
I can also notice this when first booting up and see the Google logo. It was the same this on two other units that I looked at, so I don't think it's unique to my phone. To truly notice it you have to be in a pitch black room. I only noticed it because I was using my phone as a bed side clock.

No screen will give you true black that close... Maybe you need a plasma tv screen

The whole point of AMOLED is that each pixel is it's own light source which can be completely turned off. True black was possible on every AMOLED phone I've ever used prior to this one.

That is exactly correct. Fortunately, at very low brightness, my GN does indeed display true black. I have an all black background and if I cover the time, I can't tell a difference between the phone off and on. Keep in mind that true black only occurs under extremely low brightness. Turning the brightness up introduces a bit of light polution.

No, no... I've owned the Fascinate on Verizon and when in complete darkness you can see a little bit of light emitting from the screen. The Gnex just has more pixels so there's probably more light emitting. But the blacks don't seem to be any less black than my Fascinate. When you turn the screen on the pixels must be excited in order to know when they must turn on or off, this will still emit a miniscule amount light.

I'm sorry but you're TERRIBLY mistaken and I wish this thread would get deleted before you confuse others! Night mode is simply DIMMED. It is NOT 100% black, but transparently darkened. There is a really easy way you can see this for yourself, simply turn on an animated live wall paper and go into night mode in the clock. You'll se the moving live wallpaper in the background in the "black" areas. That screen shot you took is showing the TRANSPARENCY where it's black. It is NOT actually black there!!!
The GNEX screen is JUST as black as any other SAMOLED Screen if not even more so! If you want to see 100% black - just boot into clockwork mod recovery! the entire background ther is 100% black and you'll see how inky black it looks! That said the status bar at the top of the screen is also black, and blends right in with the bezel.

when i dim my clock app i can still easily see my background live wallpaper...

What are you smoking? Download that screen shot and check thd color yourself. Its #000000, meaning BLACK. The only confusion is with people not knowing how to go into that mode in the clock. LONG PRESS, not just a simple tap.

Yes. From what I have read (OLED information, a few book selections, and an interesting patent) sAMOLED displays include what is called "pixel pre-charging".
This is due to the fact that it is far easier to precisely control the pixel, which corresponds to a "drive voltage", when the starting point is a pre-charge. Its faster and more accurate. However the pre-charge causes light to be emitted. There is no avoiding that. As much as people say "my nexus s/galaxy s/galaxy s 2 have pure black", there is NO SUCH THING even on a sAMOLED display. Contrast ratio for the Galaxy Nexus is 100,000:1 rather than infinite.

Hi, just wanted to put this topic to rest.
Was somewhat disappointed in the screen performance of the Galaxy Nexus, coming from an Galaxy S2. However I reckon it is an issue that can be fixed with drivers.
The blacks on the Galaxy Nexus are far from as good as the SAMOLED+ panel on the SGS2.
Here are some pictures of them side by side with the clock app set to night modus.
Not a deal breaker for me, but I hope this is improved in future updates.

What is your wallpaper, cause I think I can see it in the second to last photo. Like stated above, the clock is only a semi transparency over the wallpaper. Run a screen checker and take pictures of that black, that would be a better test and example
Edit: in all likely hood its just a calibration issue. Franco's kernel improved whites and colors significantly over stock. Personally, I can see that its not 100% black at the moment, but it is 99.999% black. And 100x better than backlit

The technology switches off the pixel so there is no blacker than that if you are not getting pure black then something is wrong most probably the wallpaper is not really black.

Is All Amoled Screen are Not Perfect Like Mine(Note 2)

i bought my note 2 on 29-1-2013
now what i noticed in my screen,
there middle 10% part is shaded with 1% opacity,
if we look closely then it's not noticable as u seen from far,
from naked eyes is too difficult to see,
its not like Colours are gone, only looks like shade,
if i increase brightness to 100% then the small shade like finish.
i m confused that it is defected or not,
is that Normal, does nay body heard that type of case,
Please make me happy,tell me that it is Normal,I dont wana give my phone to bad service guys.

i want to know, something like very very less shaded area in white background,
i have in middle,
i have no problem about it, but u know its costly device, i m worried about it.
is that normal, its hard to see a shaded area,Its in middle, but when i see from far, then it is noticable,but hard again...
are all amoled not plain background?

yellow tint
I have that yellow tint that the link is describing due to the glue during the manufacturing process. I'm able to see it when looking directly to the screen. When the screen is slightly angled away, that yellow tint is gone. I hope it will be resolved on future updates.

it could be a screen burn in ...because of keeping the display on for a long period...like during navigation for long time

Can't say what's your problem without any pictures but yes, AMOLED displays differ from device to device, and it's still immature, unlike LCD displays.
And yes, mine has Yellowish tint too.

This can only be resolved with a color temperature change, up to now im still wondering why the color temperature on the Galaxy Note 2 devices vary so much from phone to phone and no its not the glue. From where I live this is valid with in the 7 days of replacement provided that the next unit they open up is not yellow. But if im in a pitch black room or no 'warm' light sources there are no traces of this warm color temp.

Mine has no yellow tint, mine looks like middle area of screen is grey shaded, I checked, protector is ok, but screen middle area is very slightly shaded. Very difficult to see, when we scroll fb or youtube(down to up) then its noticable... most in plane white background...
I hope someone understand my fail English. .

Thats obviously a defect, have it replaced.

Like I already said in another thread to your query, this is normal. If you can't distinguish this from the naked eye (during normal use), this is definitely normal. I'm sure you are keeping the display in low brightness; this brightness uniformity issue exists on virtually all AMOLED displays, and the Mura Effect does have some attribute to this as well. Rumors say that the Samsung's Flagship Devices this year (2013) might feature an SLCD3 instead of AMOLED. Might indicate that AMOLED displays still need further refinement. If the shade is not so prominent, you should not worry about it then. Every Note 2 has this, those that say they don't see the shade are not looking close enough. I call this AMOLED phenomena a Samsung-kind-of-thing for a reason.

No, this tablet should look like any other phone or device as far as the screen goes, actually it should look better due to the better resolution. I would suggest just returning your device for another one.

If you're used to samoled screens blacks might seem a bit less dark since the note 10.1 2014 has an LCD. It's a different technology but the blacks are very good for an LCD. So maybe go to a shop and compare it to see if yours are different?

Screen issues

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.

No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.

This logo, not that important, but YouTube shows it really need to turn that off sometime.

Screen Problem

Hello, I've noticed that when I use my phone in night mode I can see green areas on the screen. Are there other people in my case?

No on mine so far. Black is black no greenish.

is see this too sometimes esp at night when its dark in the room with no other lights - in the day when its brighter is not visible
it does seem to be an issue with some backgrounds as i noticed in apps where the background is black (not dark grey or greysh) this isnt visible
so not sure whats going on - but i didnt had this issue with the s10 .....

Yes, I have the same problem, it comes from the screen according to what I read on some forums. Some OLED screen have problems. I think I'm going to get it exchanged.

no issues so far with mine s20+ (exynos variant), however if i were you i would seek to get replacement

like now i have the phone in my hand and is looking ok
the best place to test is in the samsung daily or SMS app - the top part of the app thats meant to be black was sometimes showing more like greyish - now is proper black again?
like i said it seems to be dependent on the ambient light - i wouldnt want to replace the phone if its not an actual issue esp since it took me a whole day to get my stuff transferred and setup

Oled is known for reduced quality the lower brightness you go.
But all units will have varied levels of tints etc

In my case..

Unfortunately, yes. Also, it is more noticeable at 120Hz.

It is rather horrible and i noticed it right away the first time I used it in the dark. I think it can not really be fixed in Software, but it can be probably made less noticeable, as 120Hz is making it worse.

Had this on my S9+ and S10. Nothing can be done about it.

Using OLED since 2010. Starting with Symbian Nokias, Windows Phone Nokias and switching over with the S8+ - OLED only.
I suppose - never had a display that bad in this regard. At least never noticed it that bad right away. The upper right corner is almost always showing a green tint.
But I am glad, if it is not too widespread - then the S20+ I ordered will probably be fine.

Just attached a picture of my screen with adaptive brightness with low light with screen at 120Hz.
At 60Hz the screen is even, at least almost even.
What is your opinion?

Report it to Samsung, probably get it exchanged, if possible and it really bugs you.
I gave back the ultra because it was too much green tint. The plus has it as well, not as bad as the ultra.

Bottom right corner is way darker and reddish.
