update for instance, on a Sprint Galaxy S6 with rooted stock Marshmallow 6.1 rom and x-posed all setup and many modifications all over the place, what will happen? I know I'll lose root, but is it as simple as just re-rooting the same way I did already and all is back as it was, or will I have to un/reinstall x-posed and reconfigure all my customizations and all that too?
Thanks
Yes, you will return to stock, without any customizations and modifications. But if you are rooted and with a custom recovery (I am assuming that TWRP is installed) you won't be able to run the OTA. Your phone will detect the changes that you have made and not install the update. In order to update, you will need to download the TAR file and update manually. See my guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...uide-links-files-update-root-restore-t3366862
The good news is that the update from PJ1 to PK1 is minor and you can just skip it.

Thank you again sir for your kind help.
I'm glad because I have this thing right where I want it again. However, this then brings up a couple more questions. If you do it manually with the TAR file, does that remove root and all the customizations as well? Also, say the next one is important, Does it incorporate previous updates like this one, or will I have to do them in order?
Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

Yes, it removes all customizations. It won't uninstall your apps or delete data (unless you wipe that in recovery) but because it unroots your phone (is that a word? it should be!) any application that depends on root privileges will stop working. By way of example, if you have Greenify installed, that asks for root to work, when you lose root Greenify will still be installed but not working.
For your second question, you only need to do the latest update. That will bring you current.
A question that you didn't ask yet, but you would think of later. Once you have installed the latest update, it is difficult (not impossible) to go back.
Things that you can do to make your life easier. Use Titanium Backup (you will see it called TiBu also) to back up your apps, data and settings. It will help you when you do upgrade.

I do keep TWRP backups? I must be honest. I downloaded Titanium Backup about a year ago and it lasted about ten minutes. I could not make heads nor tails out of what to do with it.

I have to ask though. How is this better than a SmartSwitch or TWRP backup, both of which I already have? Especially TWRP which is like a Ghost clone. I'm not arguing, I'm asking

If you upgrade your phone's system and then restore a TWRP backup, you lose the upgrade, because you are restoring a complete image.
You would only want to restore your apps, data and settings. Which is what TiBu will allow you to do.

Again , not to be argumentative, but isn't that what SmartSwitch does? And it can it to a PC directly. Actually does Titanium backup do that too?

Yes I searched, but every thread dealt with an EVO that was running a ROM. I am just unrooted, and I don't have a back up to reflash to. I am just trying to figure out how to get it back, and why it is gone.
Thanks for the help in advance. I know this is probably basic stuff for you guys so thanks for hanging in there with me.
OE
When did it dissapear? Need some background info
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
Idk, maybe over night. I just tried to open it up this morning. I have a shortcut on my home screen. And it says item no longer installed. And its not in all apps area either. I did run a new update yesterday, think it has to deal with that?
If you have a file manager (astro, androzip, etc) you can just get an apk and install it.
If not, backup your current ROM and flash a new one to install the market again.
I ran into this problem too and I don't remember how. Hopefully you have a file manager, because I didn't and it was a mess haha
It happened to me, I used my backip pro, wiped and reinstalled all my apps. There were multiple apps missing, they were still in my data/app folder but for some reason the weren't installed, and when I did install them there a -1 after the file name. So I was getting duplicate files. So yea back up, wipe, reinstall if its bugging you. Nice truck BTW.
I do indeed have astro. Where could I find the apk for marketplace?
And I had a Hero before and there were obvious reasons to rom/overclock it (slow) any good Roms for EVO?

Thanks a bunch!
The number one cause for the market issues right now are when they did the OTA update for this new market it placed it in the data/app directory and most all custom roms and themers put it in system/app (Vending.apk). If you had it in the system/app and now have one in the data/app folder as well... it then plays hide and seek with you and disappears. You can search for something called vending-1 (I believe) and delete it from data/app if you want to install a custom themed market or delete the Vending.apk out of system/app if you want the stock.
Here is fernando sor's custom themed market where this issue has been driving everyone crazy.

sorry for being a newb but I went to back up with nandroid, and I can't find a nandroid. Are the Hero and Evo a lot different with that side of things?
Sorry.
Are you using RA Recovery or Clockwork? What rom are you on?
I dont know what either of those mean, and I am factory ROM. Thats why I can't figure out why its gone.
OP, have you tried flashing the latest Gapps? You can find them in Lithid's Rapidshare folder in his CM7 thread. Alternatively, you can just push a vending.apk via ADB as other have suggested.

I believe he did state that hes not rooted, if I interpreted his OP correctly. Thus he has no custom recovery or nand backups or anything of the such. He is stock, un modified. So with that said, I personally have no clue where his market app went. To OP, when you go to menu/settings/applications /manage applications, and go to the "all" tab, is your market in there? If so, what choices do you have when you select it?

In order to flash a rom, you would first need to root the phone, and get s off. In my opinion, the easiest way is to use unrevoked, you just need to make sure to use the correct hboot drivers and properly install them, all available from the unrevoked site. Once you're rooted, you can make a full nandroid backup using a custom recovery. As far as making a backup while you're still stock, im not sure of the best way to backup. Sorry I have no links, im on the app at the moment, but a search should get you going.

I installed many official and custom ROM but you say factory reset ?????
I'm sure this problem is not because of an application.because when I Factory reset or install a new ROM it is good for a while but after 10 minutes the problem is shown ...
When I Insert a Sim Card in the device the screen turn off and on quickly and the network of Sim Card will Unavailble and it goes to Emergency Call Mode ...
What's your Idea?

well i just want to make sure and the reason a screenshot of the background is because sometimes when you quit an app, it doesnt always shuts downs and runs on background and could be the cause of the problem. so can you please post a screenshot.

You mentioned you have flashed many ROMs both custom and original.
Do you use TitaniumBackup to restore? And if so, do you restore data as well?
I would recommend not restoring phone data and when you restore your apps, do a few at a time to see if it is an app causing this.
If you don't use TitaniumBackup, and allow Google to restore, do the same.
You say it starts to happen after several minutes after a fresh flash... I think there is an app that is causing this.
Good luck.

It can't solve my problem ...
Hello there,
Over the the past year I have been using CM12.1 on my GT-I9195. However, yesterday I decided to check for updates (after few months) and there was one. I didn't notice that it was CM13 and .zip installed it. Then it got complicated. At first it asked me to update Google Play services, so I downloaded the Nano 6.0 pack and .zip installed it. Then it got bad... After rebooting the screen was black and kept saying that the wizard failed to install. So, I decided to download 12.1 again and .zip install it. Since then the phone is stuck at the CM logo. I tried to .zip install CM 13 again but after rebooting, it says "android is starting optimizing app X of XXX" and once it is done, it restarts itself and starts optimizing again in a loop.
My question is, is there any way how to make it run again without factory restore, or is there a way how to at least backup data like contacts and messages when the phone won't load?
Thank you

Hi there. If i am not wrong, u r unable to boot and u want to restore contacts n messages right? I think one of the options is go to recovery, take a nandroid backup. Now factory reset or flash a working rom and install "Nandroid Manager"(app). Then in this app you have one of the options to restore your contacts and messages. That's it. Good luck.!

just back up the cm12 rom from the recovery and clean install another rom cm13. in cm13 install the nandroid manager and using it you will have the option to select the backup file of cm12 and there then you will see restore options for messages and call logs.
Alright, Thank you, I'll try that

@fennectech,
I applied the GSM patch but im still not getting a signal although I have USSD codes.
I have restarted, factory reset and all but i'm still getting the error. I have reinstalled the ROM and am getting the same results
Please note I got the errors before I applied the GSM patch.
Something else, the camera is gone, not working
Can I request something from you, Please back up one stock ROM of a 612 and share it with me, I'd rather go back to stoc.k. My backup is messy Thank you for your noble work
I am trying to install it as well. I have TWRP installed with a 2.8.7 recovery image and when I try to peform a backup, it only brings me back to the fastboot menu. Never does an actual backup. So, therefore, there is no TWRP/backups folder to put the files in. I have tried doing a restore as well using the image but not luck. It tells me it's going to reboot but same thing, it just reboots to the fastboot menu. It is rooted and S-Off already using Sunshine
Any suggestions?

I am trying to install it as well. I have TWRP installed with a 2.8.7 recovery image and when I try to peform a backup, it only brings me back to the fastboot menu. Never does an actual backup. So, therefore, there is no TWRP/backups folder to put the files in. I have tried doing a restore as well using the image but not luck. It tells me it's going to reboot but same thing, it just reboots to the fastboot menu. It is rooted and S-Off already using Sunshine
Any suggestions?

Hi guys. So I need help with my M9. There's an OTA update, and it keeps failing to install. When I download it I try to install it and here's what happens: It starts installing it and when it reaches 24% it stops for like a minute then it reaches 25%. After that the % indicator flashes and then it stays like that for 1-2 minutes and it opens the recovery saying that it failed. This is happening on a stock, non-rooted device. If you can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Boot to fastboot (white screen) and post what it says at the top of the screen.

Due to the phone being S-OFF we know that someone tinkered with it. Therefore, the system partition most probably is modified. That's why the OTA aborts. The slightest modification of the system makes the OTA security checks fail.
Get the RUU for your current OS version from the ReadMe thread and flash it with one of the methods that are explained in the same thread. This should restore your phone's system partition so that you can install OTAs, again. Be aware that RUUs delete all your personal data from your phone.

RUU tells me it reboots to bootloader and it doesn't actually do anything and the update fails, what's the issue there?

Please don't hijack the threads of other users. That quite impolite towards the OP.

You're right, I'll make my own thread and have my issue solver faster due to the OP being higher priority :cyclops:

I personally don't like backing up things in cloud services. Therefore, I'll only name offline alternatives.
Photos, videos, music, contacts and SMS can get backed up with MyPhoneExplorer. For backing up WhatsApp messages and its media files you'll want to use the app's offline backup function and to copy the WhatsApp folder from your phone's internal storage to your PC. I don't know a way to backup other apps (without root). However, restoring app data from older android versions often leads to bugs and glitches since directories change sometimes during system updates. Therefore, I'd recommend starting from scratch even if your phone was rooted. It actually doesn't take that long to set up apps, again.
