i bought one of the straight talk samsung galaxy j3 phones from walmart on black friday for $50 thinking i was going to use it on my tmobile account. i have been scouring the net trying to find a recovery image or an app that can root or unlock this phone and have had no success. ive tried the usual stuff, kingroot etc, and the stuff that is out for other models of the j3 dosent work either (j320a j320fn, etc) i really cant even seem to find and real info on the phone which is weird because i dont think the phone is even that new. does anyone have any info on this or can point me in the right direction? even info on how to force, (or trick ) straight talk into unlocking it would be acceptable.
thanks!

I may have a root method. There is a SuperSu zip that is supposed to root when flashed with Odin. I can't find a custom recovery yet though and this is my main phone, though I could switch over to an old Droid Bionic I recently rebuilt.

I did do something very similar, or kind of similar recently. After installing Lineage 14.1 in order to get root you have to flash a superSu zip. However this was on an S5 so I'm not sure if it would work on this model. I wish I wouldn't have lost my J, I may be able to help more. However for less than these phones cost, you can have an S5 or S6 (occasionally I even run into S7s for under 100. Even a 2 or 3 year old flagship is far above these vl series. (and they're easy to root plus have tons of custom ROMs, mods etc.)

So, on Thursday I picked up an LG G3 from Verizon. I was absolutely loving it. But like most people, I wanted custom ROM's and roots and all the fun stuff you can do with android phones. I rooted my device the day I got it with IORoot. Everything is working fine at this point.
After this, i wanted a custom ROM. I found that there wasn't many for my specific model, but i did see the Sphinx G3 Neo ROM. I payed no attention to what variant it was for and loaded it up on my phone. At first, everything was working perfectly and it was butter smooth. But then I noticed whatever messaging app I tried to use would not work. I did a factory reset and then did the same process to load Sphinx on my G3. This time, messages were working, however, mobile data was not. I finally had enough of this and decided to return to the stock ROM. I found all of the stock files and was attempting to use the TOT method. I put the phone in download mode (which it won't come out of btw) and tried to start flashing. I then realized what I had done and saw that my device was reading something like D855. So when I downloaded the Verizon files it wont work. But will I be able to fix this? Have any of you had this problem before? This phone is brand new and I cannot replace it at this point. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.
Hi,
So sad to hear that. Have you tried TOT files from this thread?
I hope your imei is intact.

I don't it is bricked per say. I do believe that the only way to solve the problem will be to do as you were trying, return it to stock with .tot files, you just need to find some information which I did see in the threads somewhere with regards to getting out of download mode.
Once you get that done and flash back to stock, then you can root again, I would suggest using Stump root, and the unlock the bootloader with Bump, and this would be a good time to make a backup with the recovery TWRP.
Be calm and read as much as possible, I hope you sort it out. Good luck.

Hey guys.
I'm desperate for some help with my LG G PAD 8.3 tablet.
All i simply want to do is put cyanogen mod ROM on the device, and I can't believe how difficult it is proving to do.
I have been all over the internet and spent around 4 days researching in to the whole process and every time I follow various online steps, guides and you tube videos i end up putting the tablet in to a software brick and then have to use the LG recovery tool to get the tablet working again. It's driving me insane!
So first of all i rooted the tablet using towel root. I then get a message saying that the device is rooted. I then download the super su app and that goes fine. I then try to get TWRP or CWM on to the device so i can back up the current running operating system and it's down hill from this point. The device reboots and comes up with:
Secure booting Error!
Cause : boot certification verify
it's happened 4 times to me now. I just can't figure out how to get this device doing what I want it to do. I see loads of videos and success stories of people having no problems getting cyanogen mod on to the LG tablet so what do i do? Is there someone that can provide a detailed step by step instruction to get this right?
i'm at the point of just giving up on it and being stuck with a poxy horrible LG stock look.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!
Anyone???
If I missed it in your OP, remind me, but what variant model of the 8.3? VK810.4G? V500? V510?

Hello all,
I was testing and fooling around with my Note 4 SM-910A when I tried rooting my phone again. (Manually) and I did something different giving me root and the bootloader now shows the Custom (unlocked) symbol. Meaning, that I got root and my bootloader was unlocked. Here is some proof:
imgur (DOT) com/2qjJmWs
But there is one catch to it.
You get bricked. AT&T sees that you are rooted and you cannot use your phone unless you restore it to stock or you take it to AT&T store and they will do it for you.
Also you get a : SECURE = FAIL on your scree.
When I got this root, I made an account quickly and then I posted. This is the biggest day for me. I'm gonna try and see if I can bypass the SECURE = FAIL and make it into SECURE = I DON'T EVEN CARE!

In recovery mode I told phone to wipe data factory reset. Still pops up after reboot stating kernal is not seaddroid enforcing then says secure fail kernel and had large yellow triangle saying system software not authorized by at&t has been found etc. Turn off and take to at&t store.
Anyone know how to fix this or have I ruined the phone?

Wow. Don't be lazy. Not cool dude. I did read the whole post and I am trying what was listed. Anyway I wanted to add that my phone has never been rooted. I have tried Kingroot many times with no success. I am running Lollipop 5.1.1 which is locked by AT&T so I am curious if bootloader is locked how this happened or how I will be able to fix this. I will continue to read as I have been doing prior to being called lazy. I have yet to see anyone else state they were running the same OS I am.

The files mentioned in my previous post are the 5.1.1 OS files. I have used them multiple times to recover from a soft-brick. So, YES, I have the same OS Lollipop as you should have. AT&T has locked the bootloader on the Note 4 from the beginning. But in 4.4.4 you could temp-root in order to get rid of some files. But results are so different from phone to phone that a temp-root scenario is complicated to explain. Some work some dont. KINGROOT is also in the same boat, might or not work. You might be able to keep your phone from rebooting or it might freeze and you HAVE to pull the battery. When the battery gets pulled and reboots SOMETIMES you can reboot to a temp-rooted phone, MOST OF THE TIME it soft bricks. All of this information is in either of the posts I linked earlier, so either you're lazy, or you don't understand what you're reading. 1) Not a troll. Just someone not knowing what they're doing.
2) ATT reps don't even know the difference between a locked sim and locked bootloader, so they wouldn't know the difference between a hard and soft brick.
3) All you had to do was use Odin to fix the phone. You just traded your phone for a factory refurbished one. Good job!

Hey guys. Thought I'd chime in with a little insight here. Had someone call me the other day that tried to root one, and ended up with the same unauthorized software error. Couldn't get to download mode, couldn't get to recovery, couldn't get phone to boot. He took it to AT&T, where they of course told him the phone was "hard bricked". I just used a usb jig and restored it with odin. Did just fine.
This is the jig I used. It was $4.92 on eBay

You wasted $4.92 on ebay, All you got to do is download USB Driver for your phone and install it on your computer. Once this is done, your computer we recognize your soft bricked phone and you can use Odin to reload the firmware.

I found a bootloader unlock method for the Verizon variant of this phone, however after trying it on my phone I was able to get temp root on my AT&T Note 4. I have not tried to unlock the bootloader yet, but I will keep you guys posted.
Here is the link: galaxynote4root/galaxy-note-4-root/how-to-root-unlock-bootloader-on-galaxy-note-4/2/ (add .com infront of the first root , I can't post links yet)
(Make sure that on step 9 and up to change the file name in the command to n4-2 instead of n4-fix)
(Download everything except the Verizon stuff)
Final edit: This method only works for root, the bootloader can't be unlocked for AT&T because there was never a developer edition released for it.
Note: The root is extremely buggy and unstable, so it is not that usable. Hopefully someone else can make a root better for this device.
How did the temp root go? Doesn't it reboot after a while and then lose the root?

It does not survive a reboot, however root although it slows the phone down seems to be working fine. I'm still trying to unlock the bootloader.
Nice to see someone take the bold risk. I hope you find success. I think everyone blew this off because this method was for Verizon and it tricks the phone to make it recognized as a Devloper model who come bootloader unlocked. AT&T does not have developer model devices so chances are this method will not unlock 910A bootloaders.
Wish you luck! There's a bounty thread here somewhere..
I saw on the other thread you temp bricked your phone attempting a bootloader unlock..hope you do unlock it without bricking your phone..

This temp-root doesn't let us access the system partition
This type of root has been recognized by this community for several months and we dismissed as worthless because DM-Verity removes the root after every reboot and I am surprised you guys haven't gotten a brick yet because, on Android 5.1.1, Samsung added a security method where if anyone roots with Kingroot/KingORoot and reboot, you get a message saying that the kernel isn't from AT&T before fully booting up

I unbricked it, bootloader can't be unlocked though, also I realized that kingoroot works on 5.1.1. It might be due to the file that I pushed for temp root, so now I have temp root on my phone that isn't that unstable.
Thanks for attempting to root though. We might have to look into other exploits to get a stable one. Or maybe there isnt one and its the end of the road on our journey to find it.
Update on how kingroot workin now?

you are in the wrong thread
Your variant for the Note 4 is the international variant
This thread is for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

This temp-root doesn't let us access the system partition
This type of root has been recognized by this community for several months and we dismissed as worthless because DM-Verity removes the root after every reboot and I am surprised you guys haven't gotten a brick yet because, on Android 5.1.1, Samsung added a security method where if anyone roots with Kingroot/KingORoot and reboot, you get a message saying that the kernel isn't from AT&T before fully booting up

ok, so first of all
Go into Download mode. How to get there?
Turn off your phone entirely, and then when it has been fully turned off, hold down the power button, home button, and volume down button all at once until you get a warning screen. Press the volume down button and it should give you all the information about the phone without the system being all jacked up
Its should say if you have SM-N910F (International Variant) or SM-N910A (AT&T Variant)

Which part are you getting stuck on? To be honest most of the guides I've seen have several unnecessary steps in them, but it does require much patience especially if you're a beginner or been out of the game for awhile. I would stick to the original thread by ryanbg and pay close attention to the first ten pages of that thread. That's when everyone was learning it at the same time and a lot of the basics are covered.

And your bootloader is locked still? If you're not sure, are you able to boot to a custom recovery (twrp)? If your bootloader is still locked you will have to use Odin and flash the bpa1 firmware to get back to lollipop (5.1.1). Once you're on 5.1.1 you can unlock and root. There currently is no other way to unlock without using 5.1.1.
