What TWRP and SuperSU versions? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I'm on OpenBeta9 and have /data formatted with f2fs. Couldn't find a clear indication of what TWRP version (and SuperSU) is compatible with this setup.
Could you please assist?
Thanks

Normaly, twrp-3.0.2-1.28-oneplus3 and SR5-SuperSU-v2.78-SR5-20161130091551. But in my case, i had a encrypt problem with the recovery

Hi MrSkyFail, thanks for the reply.
Was your problem preventing you to use TWRP normally, or something I could work around?
Also, would you have download links? SuperSU should be easy for me to find, by TWRP is always a mess, since it's a mod version.
Thanks

I found out that if you only flash OB9 from TWRP, even though you formatted your /data partition and is f2fs, if you don't flash SU before your first boot, your phone becomes encrypted and you will have TWRP pin issues.
The other issue I found was that if you flash OB9, then try flashing SU (I'm running SR5 right now), it doesn't want to boot. The only way I got it to work is after you flash OB9, Mount /system and delete a couple of google apps (for me, I deleted Calendar and gmail; you can download these after you boot up from playstore), then flash SU, then reboot, and profit.
So order of things for me:
1. Wipe (make sure /data is f2fs)
2. Flash OB9
3. Flash TWRP (modded 1-28)
4. Reboot to recovery (you may have to do a manual power off then volume down + power on)
5. Mount /system and delete calendar and gmail apps
6. Flash SU (SR5; I think there's a newer version but I haven't tried it with the new one).
7. Wipe Dalvik and Cache
8. Reboot System
If everything is done correctly, your phone will reboot twice.
You will have dm-verity and unlocked bootloader warning screens.
First boot takes about 3-5 min.

Why would deleting a couple google apps be necessary? I don't get it. And this applies for having cache f2fs too I assume?

You may only need to mount /system before you flash SU. I can't find the post at the moment but this was mentioned (delete a few apps) when OB8 first came around.
Only the /data partition has F2FS support on stock OB8 and OB9.

TWRP and Encryption password for data.

Hello there! thanks for your time.
I swear that I tried everything.
I received my HTC 10 like 1 almost 2 weeks ago.
I unlocked the bootloader, flashed the recovery, supersu, everything just fine. Everything works. Except that when I boot into the recovery TWRP ask for the password to decrypt /data. I put my pin = password failed. I tried to resetting the pin, tried putting a password, leaving it blank (tested default_password too) but I cant make TWRP work mounting /data. It always says that password is incorrect.
I even tried factory reset 2 times.
the version is: 3.0.2-2
Any ideas?
Thanks again guys! have a great day!
Anytime its asked me for a password I just press cancel.
My understanding is that the HTC 10 in encrypted by a proprietary HTC code.
Yep - just hit Cancel on that screen.
See the TWRP thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/development/recovery-twrp-touch-recovery-t3358139
"NOTE: TWRP CANNOT decrypt HTC Sense ROMs!!"
And this in the second post
"5. My storage is encrypted, and TWRP can't decrypt it. How am I supposed to flash anything?
First, hit the "Cancel" button at the decryption prompt to continue to the TWRP Main Menu. Storage doesn't need to be decrypted to root the device or flash custom ROMs. If storage is decrypted on this device, mobile network will stop working.
6. Is it possible to retain encryption AND make a data partition backup in TWRP?
No. TWRP cannot currently decrypt /data on this device. That is due to HTC's use of proprietary encryption. Until someone figures out a way around that, the only way to access /data in TWRP is to unencrypt using the "Format Data" option in TWRP and disabling the forceencrypt flag in the ramdisk (which will break mobile network in Android)."
Hey! thanks!
That is what I did, I hit cancel and flashed everything. But now there is an OTA Update. I downloaded, hit install, and the phone reboots on recovery, I thought that the password was needed in order to process the update.
well thanks again guys!!

That's exactly what I did. And I just learnt (see my question here) that you can't install OTA updates with a custom recovery image installed. It seems, you'll either have to give up on the OTA update or you need to flash the stock recovery image to be able to install the OTA update.
There's a stock ROM in this thread. I THINK that rverts the recovery image as well. But it's a Euro ROM, not sure how that impacts other region phones.

You need to get the CID and MID of your phone first. I followed these instructions very easily.
I'm going to try flashing the OTA update for my model.... once I've read it all.

Hey, thanks for your reply.
In fact its easier than that, on this guide you have the recovery images to flash it back. http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/stock-stock-collection-recovery-ruu-ota-t3359297
I flash the recovery back, and applied the ota, I have an error about the version of the ota for the phone, but you may have better luck.
btw I guess I flashed the incorrect recovery. Need to select the correct version I'm trying that now

If you're US unlocked variant, you can follow my guide, here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/guide-how-to-ota-receive-corrupt-message-t3378187
If you're another variant, reply in the above thread and I can help you find the versions of the files you need to flash.

Reboot download
Make sure your mid matches the US one (I had super cid for mine but apparently if the mid doesn't match it will give error as well)
fastboot getvar all
will tell you
then once it was all set
fastboot flash zip nameof_file.zip
DO IT TWICE!
Then reboot your download to see if the changes took place
You then have to reflash your TWRP recovery because the zip will flash stock recovery
if you are still getting the password box, click cancel for TWRP, wipe > advance and wipe data
good luck

hay I really need help as in phones setting in security tap is says "encrypt phone - phone is encrypted".
is that a good thing? I want my phone to be "data" unlocked if u know what I mean? help
also I got my phone about 3 weeks and unlocked the bootloader but S-on and I live in Europe.
I try the rom with f2fs support and always when I try to boot the rom with "data" and "cache" formatted as f2fs it doesen´t boot and I try to boot the compatible rom and kernel with ext4 first and when I got a full boot I go to recovery to format cache and data as f2fs but this time when it boots "data" reverts back to ext4 and cache stays as f2fs?
any idea!
I use disk info app and is it because my phone is encrypted data never stays as f2fs or something else as I don´t know much about "decrypt or uncrypt" and the other...
thnx!

Rooting 8.0 Guide?

I have a USA variant, just got the Oreo / EMUI 8.0 update. Everything is stock.
I got my bootloader unlock code from Honor support (via the Google forms the USA Support tweeted out).
All guides for unlocking the bootloader and rooting are for Nugat (7.0).
I am wondering a few things.
1) Has anyone unlocked/rooted Oreo? What steps did you take? What TWRP version are you using (a link is preferable, if you have one)? Did you use the multi-tool, or directly with adb?
2) What root solution did you use? I prefer SU over magisk (for the ability to use xposed), but I heard SU isn't working, only magisk? What version did you use?
3) What backup system do you use when your phone will wipe everything for unlocking the bootloader? Is the Huawei stock "Backup" app that it comes with any good? Any better ones to use?
Basically there's no walkthrough for rooting with the current setup. It'd be awesome if someone wrote one that was basically:
- Backup using W method (backup app, or alternative).
- Unlock bootloader using X method (adb/multi-tool/whatever).
- Root using Y method (TWRP version, SU or magisk, and version numbers)
- Do Z activity (anything else to flash after? xposed? etc.?)
Any thoughts appreciated.

That didn't even cover a fraction of the questions I posted. It *maybe* gave the relevant TWRP build, though even that is in question, as one of the most recent posts was "I couldn't get any of the TWRP versions listed in this thread to work fully. " and suggesting something else.
I'm curious if anyone has actually rooted stock 8.0 and what process they used.

It also said backup partitions when in twrp image mount, and flash magisk 16 for root.
I'm about to try this same exact thing the twrp Oreo thread is a little confusing.
K easy part done bootloader unlocked
Update: installed twrp. Did a few backups. Flashed magisk. Rooted now restoring apps in titanium backup. Adaway finally and going to clean up system. ? Safety net passes. Just a little confused on how to restore if I end up in a boot loop. I'm trying to backup still in twrp. But can't backup data and I don't see boot.img to backup. So yeah I'm scared.

Flashing kernel.img and system.img from the Oreo update.zip should completely fix a bootloop/brick. I had messed around and bootlooped one of mine, and had to extract those .img files to flash them through fastboot to restore my phone. It will erase the system though so a backup of data through Titanium Backup should be safe.

No I waited for Oreo before I rooted. I just rebooted again and booted back to system fine. I made a bunch of backups in twrp. But there useless if you don't have booted.img system and data.

there is no "boot.img" on oreo.
the traditional boot.img has been split into 2 partitions. kernel.img and ramdisk.img.

So we need kernel.img ramdisk.img which is boot. Than we need system and data. How do you flash the kernel and ramdisk when in twrp? I'm guessing ramdisk we select recovery ramdisk...and kernel? I got system and data backed up
Flashing kernel.img through "fastboot flash boot kernel.img" absolutely solved my bootloop/brick problem. I am completely new to Huawei phones so if I'm wrong please don't let me spread misinformation.

You'd need to flash kernel as boot through fastboot(fastboot flash boot kernel.img). TWRP would be ramdisk (fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk *****.img). System and Data backed up through TWRP can be restored through TWRP. At least those worked for me in restoring a bootloop/brick.

Each partition is it's own. Kernel is kernel, ramdisk is ramdisk, etc.
Recovery_ramdisk is recovery_ramdisk
I preferred to make each partition backup as images. Using adb shell and DD commands.
I know it is not in this thread. But in the "(nougat) twrp complete" thread.
This is linked in I believe post two. Where it describes making backup useing DD.
But the partitions are different in oroe, so need to use different codes as in that thread.
I just posted almost same thing yesterday with the links.
Use this guide to make back up. But substitute the partition layout from the following link
Oreo layout
I might be putting together a script that does the backup form you . And put it into a zip file that you run as a twrp install.
I like that idea. Now I said it out load, yeah I like it
I made first draft of my dd back up install.
It makes new directory on external card "twrp_backup" then makes dd copies of all 56 partitions. It takes a while to complete. , but gives you all the partitions, as they are. I added echo lines to the script to give you stautus of the backup, but the output is not shown on trwp install window. And it appears to be doing all the lines of the script at same time, not one at a time. So even if the echo commands printed output , it would be all at once.
well hold off on that statement of "it works" 30 minutes plus and still running.
No errors in current log, Adb shell ls (backup directory) shows all partitions. But mtp only showing 42 out of 56.
It appears to be hanging somewhere.
Will update when I find it.
update..
It worked. All 56 partitions backed up. took over an hour. then I realized I had internal storage full of junk. Userdate backup took 23GB.
as long as your data is not so full, should be better time.
maybe someone else can help edit it to be better script.

none of those would be stock recovery. Because in order to have made that backup, you would have been on twrp. So the backup would be also twrp.
need to get the stock oreo recovery from extracting the recovery_ramdisk from update.app. update.app is in the update.zip of your oreo update. The main zip , not the "public" or "hw" one.
once you have the image. select install menu in twrp. change to install image. And install to "recovery ramdisk" also can be done with fastboot.

Hi there guys!:fingers-crossed:
I've tried to install a couple of Project Treble roms, however it seems that all of them have the same issue, they don't connect to the mobile connection ( by Vodafone RO, if it's relevant in any way).
I've configured the APN and contacted the carrier and they took a shot at it as well, but to no avail.
I've also noticed that i can send messages however but I'm not receiving any.
The phone is a Umidigi One with MTK6763.
Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I am in the same boat. I have Poptel P60 which also has MT6763. All the symptoms match. Also tried a couple of rooms to no avail including 8.1 and 9.0 ones. Octopus ROM's recent change log mentioned something about Mtk RIL but also cannot get mobile data to work.
I'm noticing that after some time (and maybe some combination of reinserting sim and other things) I see some activity on the mobile connection indicator but still no working data. Double checked and tried different sets of APNs. Nothing
I'm hoping somebody has some suggestions... please let me know if you learn anything and I will, too. Manufacturers GUI is horrid and punishes you for rooting...
Maybe we could submit a bug ticket.
Does data work on any 8.1 treble ROM this phone will be worth it if I can get 9.0 data working but I'll settle for omni ROM or rr remix
No data, unable calls, incorrect network name (KDDI and SoftBank SIM)
Hello.
I'm facing this issue too.
I flashed many GSI ROM to Umidigi One (MT6763), SIM card detected but no data and unable calls.
Network state is always showing "No service - Emergency calls only".
I'm using KDDI SIM 4G VoLTE type.
When I'm using stock ROM, data and VoLTE calling are fully working after apn settings.:good:
I entered *#*#4636#*#* command network testing screen. in stock ROM, current network shown carrier name "KDDI" but I after flashed other ROM, it showing up weird number "44051". is this normally?
I tried friend's SoftBank SIM, it showing up correctly "SoftBank" but still no data and unable calls.
How can I make a mobile connection in other roms??
Sorry my poor English... I using Google Translate and post from Japan.
Thanks.
I am also facing this issue bro i have mt6739 chipset
I have mt6762 (helio p22)
Isee similar problem. Aosp 9.0 flashed and booted without any cell signal.
In order for my device to have working twrp, I needed to pay dm_verity. And I also removed forceencrtpt. I have read a comment that this encrypt change could be the cause of not connecting to cell signal.
I tested this a little. I flashed gsi with encryption still set to force. I was then able to have cell signal. But!!!!!!!!, There was many many apps and system force closeing.
Keyboard
Bluetooth
Settings,
Gallery
Camera
Etc , all repeated crash.
Can anyone tested gsi without encryption ?
facing the same issue here on mt6763 chipset. if i only flash the treble roms (i dont have twrp which mounts system and vendor so i only flash treble roms 9.0 versions via fastboot), after flashing call and mobile data including LTE works fine. I ported twrp for my phone with twrp porter windows app.. anytime i flash it... networks and data doesnt work anymore. i guess it is so because the twrp only boots to DECRYPTION UNSUCCESSFUL page so i cant use the phone with the twrp flashed... i have to restore stock recovery to boot pass the decrytion error page,, which ofcourse also encrypts the phone again. So now, i think the problem is my twrp, does anyone have a better working twrp for 6763 and 4.4.95+ kernel. Why does flashing twrp breaks the network connection??

it doesnt change anything. decryption unsuccessful still shows. i flashed the ported twrp on my stock an hour ago and realized sim cards dont work anymore. by the way, right after installing twrp i wipe data and install no verity opt encrypt zip but still. My boot and recovery images are all secured in the stock OS. could the secured img be the cause??

Right but if i successfully get passed the decryption unsuccessful page...sim cards dont work on the phone anymore. does that mean any attempt to decrypt my stock boot/kernel/recovery brings up connectivity issues.?? thinking out loud. and how do i properly get rid of encryption from my stock rom?

ok thank you for the file but i have seen vendor in the files.. So before i flash i have to let you know.. my twrp fails to mount vendor... i remember flashing magisk 16.4 for treble roms but i got an error.... unable to mount/system/vendor...... due to this i couldnt root my treble rom.
ok it flashed successfully but please tell me exactly how the process is because i still get decryption unsuccessful. At which point should i select rm-rfs instead of formatting in twrp setting... is it before or after flashing the file.......

slow boot on Android Pie with twrp

Please point me to the right thread if there is one.
Since upgraded to Android Pie and TWRP 3.23, my 5T got very slow boot mainly because it stuck at splash screen (the one has powered by android) for about 2min every boots/reboots. I tried restoring to stock recovery, it does boot normally.
This slow boot happens on all Pie updates including 9.0.5 with twrp 3.3.0. Any solution?

using Blue Spark 9.100 version no any kind of booting problem here.
Already using TWRP 3.3.0-x blu_spark v9.100, also try blu_spark r165-oos, still the same.
It will boots normally only with stock recovery.

try - MagiskManager > uninstall > restore images > reboot TWRP > wipe cache > flash ROM > wipe > flash Magisk > reboot
Alright I tried it. after restored the image TWRP is gone, reboot and it is already stock recovery; booting is fine as it is stock recovery. Anyway I re-flashed OOS 9.0.5 with stock recovery, after 1st boot to system I installed TWRP via fastboot, booting slows down as it was,,, nothing's changed.
The only thing I didn't try to wiping data, I cannot afford losing everything and I don't' believe it matters as I have perfectly fine booting on stock recovery.

this behavior is existing with Magisk 18.1 as well with 19.1?
Yes same slow boot on magisk 18. I doubt if it is related, with twrp it boots slow already even magisk is not installed.
i have this issue too. running the latest codework twrp. not sure if this caused it to slow down because it wasn't this slow before the update.
I've always removed the 'compatibility.zip' from the OOS PIE ROMS, that way I was able to keep the Oreo version of TWRP installed;
twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.85_treble-op5_op5t.img
This is also nice, in case some people decide they don't like PIE and want to easily revert back.
I've never had any issues like this.

same as before. around 2 minutes to reboot.
If anyone still having this issue, I found it links to encryption of Dual Apps zone. "Format Data" from TWRP and this issue gone, do backup before proceeding and you will lose everything.

Thank you to @Mentalmuso for his great kernel Weta latest TF5
Thank you to @topjohnwu for Magisk
Thank you to the creator of the Encryption Disabler @ianmacd
As usual I am not responsible for any damage cause to your tablet flashing this ROM:angel:
Some advice for newbies:
DRIVERS
There is no way to use PC with USB cable and flash with ODIN if you have not intaled the Samsung Drivers, search for these with your PC browser
OEM UNLOCKING
Go to settings/ About tablet/ Software information/ press build number 7 times to activate DEV mod
Go bac to setting down Developer Options that now apear
Tick Unlock OEM Your tablet will reboot and wipe everything so backup
Redo all setup Finish it even update if needed
FORCE REBOOT
Press and hold 3 keys Power/ Vol+/ Vol-
RECOVERY MODE
Power off tablet
Press and hold Power/ Vol+
DOWNLOAD MODE
For me the only thing that works is is at the same time force reboot when tablet off and connect usb cable to computer.
FLASHING ANYTHING WITH ODIN
ROM:
Place AP in AP
CSC_CSC_xxxxx in CSC
Place BL in BL
TWRP
Untick reboot in second tab
Place TWRP in AP
CHECK IF YOU NEED TO FORMAT DATA IN RECOVERY MODE
Boot in recovery mode
Select install
Select Storage on the bottom
If internal is 0mb you need to format data before doing anything that will allow you to wipe or zip anything but will cleann all you have on the tablet so Backup before
ROM FEATURES
Stock TF5
Rooted with Magisk latest and Weta Kernel latest
Heavy Debloat, most of the stuff you can install with Playstore is gone + some unneeded Samsung and Google stuff. No Knox, No Bixby, no Kids stuff, No digital wellbeing, No Microsoft stuff. It could definitely be cleaner; well that's for next version with maybe some more tweaking on Google and Samsung to reinforce privacy and improve battery life. Give us your ideas.
For now you still get Samsung Account, Samsung Store, Samsung DEX, Samsung Notes, Google Account, Google Playstore and Google
If you want to debloat more install Debloater module in Magisk and run it from Termius (Playstore) Example I got rid of Samsung Video Player, My Files, and hide Phone and Message as I don't use these and my App screen has no more than 11 apps before installing what I need.
Also for some interesting tweaking follow this thread and get rid of all: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s4/how-to/tweak-tab-s4-debloat-root-plugins-t4088699 still work pretty good except XPosed (Too bad!), Proca and few others but to disable big brothers It works fine. This is a great thread by @doggydog2
How To Flash this Rom:
OEM SHOULD BE UNLOCKED. THERE IS NO WAY TO TO THE FOLLOWING WITHOUT THIS STEP.
You need TWRP Installed. You can use flashify if you are already rooted to flash the new TWRP. If you don't know how refer to this thread from Mentalmuso: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s4/development/recovery-twrp-3-3-0-sm-t83x-t3928278
Reboot in Recovery
Factory reset, Wipe all but SD, Format Data (Very Important) (YOU WILL BE LOSING ALL YOUR DATAS SO BACKUP WHAT YOU NEED)
Flash the Zip file
Flash Encryption Disabler for now https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s4/development/recovery-twrp-3-3-0-sm-t83x-t3928278 Thread from Metalmuso, look in Android 10 forlder
Reboot
Finish setup
Update Google Apps
Update Samsung Apps
Launch Magisk and press OK , device will reboot
Enjoy!
If you need to pass ctsProfile to true, flash "[MODULE] MagiskHide Props Config - SafetyNet, prop edits" from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-magiskhide-props-config-t3789228/post83146179 Downlaod magisk module, open termiux SU, Launch props select "2 Basic Autentification"
That doesnt fix Netflix in L1 even hidding Magisk. We wiill not implement that in the next update.
If you have issues with Bluetooth pairing not sticking after reboot go to Magisk, download module Bluetooth Library patcher 1.9 and install itin magisk, that will solve the issue.
Changes v2.3:
Fix /data not mounted
Fix Bluetooth not keeping devices BT after reboot

Google Drive folder T830 and link to T830 rom shared to all.
@enotar This is extremely exciting as I didn't think there'd be support like this for the Tab S4! I just have a question before I attempt this: Do I need to already be on Android 10 before flashing this rom or am I able to flash it from Android 9? I'm asking because I have the WETA Kernal + TWRP + Magisk installed, but on Android 9 (T830). Because of this, I'm not able to use system update to update to Android 10. If not, is there another way to flash this rom?

Can you explain more detailed as I have no issue here with Iris
And yes Android 10 is not needed just TWRP and BTW you need to come with something, 8, 9 or 10 to install TWRP
I will repeat myself do not wipe SD dont cross the box, you'll be very sad.
