People in the CM13/14.1 threads have talked about editing the US Unlocked RUU and removing the radio, cradio, and recovery files in order to be able to flash on Verizon and Sprint devices. However, every time I do this I get errors while attempting to flash the edited RUU. Can someone please provide a guide on how to succesfully edit an RUU?
AFAIK you cannot edit an RUU because it is signed by HTC.
You can however remove pieces from the firmware, such the pieces you mentioned, but in order to be able to flash modified firmware you need to be s-off.

I am S-OFF and it's still throwing errors. I have unzipped an RUU, removed the cradio, radio, and recovery files from the folder, an then rezipped it and it will not flash. It gets stuck on "ui_updating"

You cannot flash normal zip file from recovery, it has to be a flashable zip, do a quick Google Search on "how to make a flashable zip" follow the steps and then you can use it.

...that's not even close to what I'm talking about. I am wanting to edit the 2.x US Unlocked RUU (firmware package) which is installed through download mode, not a flashable zip.

they are talking about firmware not RUU.
RUU = system (ROM) + firmware
no need for ROM..
So does no one have an answer?

You don't need to flash a RUU. You just need to modify the firmware zip. Flash firmware, flash new recovery, wipe data partion, not factory reset. Flash CM. Advanced calling will probably not work though.

As my first post here, I wanted to make it something helpful. Anyway, you will need to find the stock recovery and use fastboot to put it on. Sorry, don't know where you would look to find one, maybe someone has one here?

well as i understand you need to revert to device's stock condition
as far as i know only way to do it is by RUU or individually flashing every image. RUU is easily done but as you mentioned you get error messages try finding out what those error messages mean
common messages are
cant connect to device----ensure you are in fastboot usb mode
version problems----check weather you are using the right RUU (RUU is different for diferent regions) one RUU can have more than one versions so be sure which one you need
and you also need to lock you bootloader before running RUU
let me know if anything works
take a complete backup and make a goldcard just in case..you never know what may happen

Actually, this 's-on' and 's-off' is very much important. You can flash any stock rom with s-off but not that easily with s-on. I'm a noob so I can't really explain further. Search for it!

i got same problem some days ago.cant port ruu and remove cwm.
so first of all you find your ruu from football's marvel collection or search on internet.if its in .zip file its very good extract it,you ll find recovery.img,boot.img and system.img
or if its in .exe file.first try installation wizard if its fail.again start installation wizard and then keep it on dont update bootloader just go to temp folder.(C:\Users\[LoginName]\AppData\Local\Temp\{82B23FCD-D5D0-45CA-A3A2-5350D3926551}) in this you will have see rom.zip file extract it.you ll find
recovery.img,boot.img and system.img then,
remove battery (power +volume down) to going in hboot then click on fastboot then plug your phone usb with computer open cmd and type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
you can see fastboot file in your extracted zip.by this way you manually port stock rom.i tried it and it successfully possible.but i use my original stock rom, ages when i used europe rom it failed.
and please be careful in type commands it ll brick your phone if you doing anything wrong..maybe it ll help you
and yes one thing read this thread carefully i recommand third method which i mentioned here.

and s-on or s-off.there are many difference between twos.i dont know much i m also noob here.but with s-off you can change your hboot, radio and many customization but with s-on its difficult i think.so i recommand you to flash your orginial stock rom if you are s-on.i have s-on phone so my phone wont remove cwm with any other stock roms and its got failed.so mind this thing.and know more about s-on and s-off read this.

I'm so thankful that cmlusco had these simple words listed here. I was trying without success to flash a recovery via hboot.92 to no avail. I am s-off and rooted running tinys cm10.1. The problem started when i wanted to use twrp as a recovery. I tried installing that in android itself with goomanager. It said it was successful so tried to reboot into recovery. no dice. it now doesn't even have cwm recovery which was what i was trying to replace. it just goes back into hboot. so i thought, "ok, i'll just adb it" again either with shell in android or via fastboot in hboot it says remote failed. this one line he just wrote tells me that despite everything i have, i cannot install via hboot. The only thing that works is having a pb31img file to install it. the problem is, most recoveries come in .img. so I thought i could just repackage it as a zip and use the txt from another twrp i had previously gotten to work by way of a pb31img and create my own new pb31img with the newest version (the old one i had was already made by someone else and installs flawlessly). basically now i'm curious if i should just ask how to make the newest twrp into a proper pb31img file to flash (since i know this works) or is there an easy way to upgrade hboot.092 to 1.07? Any help on either of these or both subjects would be greatly appreciated. Just for the record cmlusco, am i right in thinking the reason i can't fastboot flash my recovery is because my loader is locked somehow despite being rooted and s-off? will upgrading to hboot 1.07 enable all of what i want to do? Also, what's the best way to go about doing this? I have everything i need backed up so no worries there. Thanks in advance to any and all help!

You don't even need to go through all that trouble. Just use the PB31IMG.zip here:
PB31IMG.zip - 3.61 MB
It's also in the TWRP thread on one of the last few pages, TWRP 2.4.1.0.

Correct you can not fastboot flash unless your bootloader is unlocked. Since your s-off you can update the bootloader by flashing this file http://dinc.does-it.net/Hboots/Hboot_1.07/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot. Once updated, you can unlock it and then flash img files with fastboot.
However, here is the TWRP 2.4.1.0 PB31IMG.zip http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/TWRP_2.4.1.0/PB31IMG.zip, if you dont want to update the bootloader. You may need to flash it two or three times to get it to take.

Thanks to you and tiny for such a quick and simple response. pb31img used and updated perfectly! Just curious, cmlusco, in your signature i noticed you on hboot 1.07 but it's locked. Any particular reason for having it locked? I have yet to update mine but i did download and organize the pb31 hboot img you gave me for possible future use ( if i feel the need). Other than the aformentioned advantage of flashing hboot via fasboot and adb, is there any other advantage of hboot 1.07? Thanks again guys, you make my life easier.

Not really, S-OFF should get you what you need. You only miss the ability to flash via fastboot without an unlocked HBOOT. PB31IMG.zip works fine with S-OFF.

I have never had the need to unlock it yet, but like having the ability if needed.
So I converted my HTC m8 to a GPE (rooted) Downloaded from graffixnyc dot com/m8.php
Phone was working fine until I accidentally updated via OTA and went into a bootloop.
I finally manage to reflash TWRP and do a factory restore however it goes into bootloop anyway,
I'm willing to start from scratch, however I don't know how to.
What I need to do in order to flash this 5.1 Stock Non-Rooted GPE RUU? using TWRP. Which are the steps? (I don't have an SD card) I'm scared I will brick my phone, I read something about wipe the data using TWRP, but I'm not sure.

The easiest way is:
Get an SD card.
Copy the non-rooted GPE RUU onto the SD card and rename it the required zip file name.
Change the CID to the correct google GPE one.
For non-SD card follow the steps here:

To get the rom zip just run the ruu.exe file. When the box with a picture of a phone pops up, click start on pc, type in run and click on run then in that box that pops up, type in %temp% and click ok. Another window pops up then just scroll down to the most recent folder and rom.zip will be in there, if not it will be in the next folder.
Step one says:
Rename the RUU zip file 0p6bimg.zip

Yes, I know.
But you are telling him to rename an RUU to 0P6BIMG.zip.
You can't rename an exe file to a zip file. You need to start with a zip file, and rename that.
That being said, the RUU zip file is available in the link you provided. If he downloads and renames that, everything should work out well.
EXCEPT!!! Where he said in the OP that he didn't have an SD card. So there is that.

Okay.
Download the 5.1 RUU.zip from here onto your PC.
Rename it to ROM.zip and place it into your fastboot folder.
Hook up your phone and get into ADB/fastboot.
fastboot devices to make sure you are connected. You should see your serial number. If you don't know what it is, it doesn't matter. A bunch of letters and numbers means you are connected.
fastboot oem rebootRUU A black screen with the HTC logo should come up. This is RUU mode.
fastboot flash zip ROM.zip
If you get a fail, that's the hboot updating.
Type fastboot flash zip ROM.zip again without disconnecting.
After a successful flash fastboot reboot and you are done.
Disconnect your phone and enjoy Android 5.1

If you do there's a spot ready for it, otherwise I'll definitely get it up tomorrow.
extSD flashable zip added to OP
I apologize if this is a noob question, but it's late, I'm tired and probably shouldn't be messing with my phone anyways. My current status is unlocked, rooted, s-off, 1.21.617.3 base, VZW radio flashed. Can I just install the ROM version in the OP according to the instructions to update to the new firmware and then reflash the VZW radio after? Not really keen on restoring stock recovery/boot > format data > take OTA > reflash SuperSU/TWRP to get the latest firmware. Thanks

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "instructions to update to the new firmware." However, I have included instructions in the OP for whichever method you want to use. Either via PC, or via SD card. You could flash either way, then reflash the Verizon radio. Just keep in mind you will now have a stock recovery, stock boot image, stock system image, new firmware, and no root...all of it stock.
So I can just follow jcase's guide again to regain root/TWRP/SuperSU after flashing the ROM? Then just reflash the Verizon radio and I should be updated and good to go? I'm a little unclear with the boot.img though, at which point should that be modified, when side loading SuperSU?
FYI, when I clicked the link to the ROM, the Android file host file looks to be the RUU or maybe the file just has RUU in the name by mistake?

Flashing either one of the files I've linked will give you a 100% stock device. You will be starting basically from scratch (you will still be s-off and unlocked however).
The android file host link is a Rom.zip. I just included ruu in the zips title so folks would know what it is, AND where it came from. It is the Rom.zip from the 1.53.617.5 RUU.
10-4, thanks for providing this.
Agreed, always good to have these on hand.
OK so for clarification, if I am bootloader unlocked, rooted, and ROMed, flashing this is OK and will NOT brick my device?

If you aren't s-off you will need to relock the bootloader for it to flash.

Are you 100% sure about this? I think s-on can flash signed zips in ruu mode with bootloader unlocked. Keyword being signed. Just asking because people relocking bootloader seems to cause so many issues and most of the time it's unnecessary. Like taking otas.

You can download it from here.
I'm trying to flash but when the phone is reading the img file it says system halted ..... fail to update due to large image file.
I think it is not the correct one.

It is the correct one.
The problem is that regular fastboot can't handle the file because it is too large.
You'll need to use HTC's version of fastboot. You can find further instructions here. Skip the step for the RUU download there. That one isn't the correct one for you, and you already have the proper one downloaded. Also skip the *first you need this* part. You already have that stuff.
An alternative would be to use the method to flash from your SD card.
Rename the RUU.zip by removing everything in the name of it except for 0P6BIMG (and .zip of course) and place it onto your extSD (must be formatted to FAT32). Then boot to bootloader with the SD card inserted into the phone, and follow the on screen prompts (volume up to confirm the flash ~ power button to reboot after the flash is complete ~ super easy)
If you use this method, be sure to delete the renamed .zip from your extSD. If you don't your phone will try to update again every time you boot to bootloader.
Good luck!

Last questions:
1. Is it english?
2. Which install from what you've recommended in the post?
I'm unlocked and s-off, the usb install seems pretty slick as I am running Ubuntu 18.04 at the moment but I also have a windows 7 machine.
Need hash
I downloaded the file last night but twrp-3.3.1-0-m8-1 says it's corrupt. Downloading again as we speak. Is there an md5 for this? I'm in the US and can only read enough of the website to click the icon for download...
My Kingdom for a working zip file
I have downloaded this file: 0P6BIMG_M8_DUGL_M60_SENSE70_MR_HTC_Europe_6.16.401.101_Radio_1.24.30336021.13G_30.69.336021.00_F_release_465002_signed_2_4.zip
at least 4 or 5 times, from three different sources ( 1 cost $5) with no luck. Thanks to xunholyx at least I know what to look for but, so far, Archive manager can't open them and TWRP won't install them. My first method has been to stick it in /sdcard, do a twrp factory wipe and tell it to install but so far no good.
If any of you know where I can get this file or suggestions about maybe where I should be looking or what I should be doing at this point, advice is always welcome. Thanks

You can't flash RUUs with TWRP. You need to flash it in fastboot or use the SD card method. Look at post #4 for instructions.
EDIT: Yes it's English
RUU in .zip package

Sorry to be so dumb, but isn't the RUU in the zip that I can't unpack? I would be thrilled to download the straight ruu or ota.

Don't unpack it. You can't do that. Just follow the instructions to flash the .zip
It is the "straight RUU". It's the .zip contained in the RUU.exe. The .exe is for installing though windows, just like any other software.
With the extracted .zip, you need to flash it in fastboot or with the SD card method.
Just follow the instructions.
There was never any RUU.exe ROM updates for the dual sim M8
EDIT: The RUU isn't in the .zip
The .zip is the RUU
Yeah, I figured it was something like that. I'm not a total noob, just old. I've got a degree in electronics technology from 1986 and know enough adb , etc. to be dangerous, but I'm hoping this phone will last as my wife is on her fourth M8! I love the phone...I had ordered a mini2 as my old one was a mini, and I have worked on them all. My only hurdle is this phone is markedly different from the US models. I've finally ascertained that it was a j15 before it was changed by whomever.
I can't begin to thank you enough for your help. Working with old tech is like restoring an old car and I know there is an enormous education to be had here. I have more questions(of course) but I'll save them for later. I have it running Los for the time being. Thanks again.
M8__dugl, firmware upgrade went south, no fastboot
I got an ota over wifi (from God knows where) and It wouldn't install. I tried to flash it in ruu mode, but it failed, so I unpacked the firmware.zip and flashed it in ruu and all seemed well until I noticed that fastboot says it's running 4.30.401.5 and Software info says it's still 3.33.401.10. This is the ota: OTA_M8_DUGL_L50_SENSE60_MR_HTC_Europe_4.30.401.5-3.33.401.10_release_426355.zip
I'm s-off and relocked at the moment. I was trying to unlock once again using Unlock_code.bin before I put the old ruu back on it when bootloader decided it was no longer going to talk to my pc. adb is fine, just no fastboot.
I rebooted and killed the server more than necessary to no avail. Anyone got any ideas to get me out of this? The phone works but it freezes some. I anyone needs the getvar, I'll post it.
Got it fixed...BAD CORD!!! It's always something....
