DND mode turns on and off repeatedly - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I am curious whether anyone else is having this problem as I cannot find anything about it online. I have an issue that my Pixel XL starts turning DND mode on and off repeatedly with no interaction from me. It cycles back and forth every second or so and the DND icon comes and goes from the notification bar as it does this. This also seems to run down the battery and heat up the phone. No clearing out of applications seems to fix this but if I reboot the phone it goes away. I should also note that I find my Pixel goes into DND mode all the time unintentionally . About half the time I take it out to make a call I see that DND is on. This happens even when it is not cycling like this repeatedly. Anyone else having problems like this?

Are they any DND rules setup that might be triggering? Do you have any other automation app installed, like Tasker, that could be causing thisre

I have seen this happen on my phone a few times - during the day, which is against the schedule that I set. It's not often enough to bother me, but it is somewhat worrisome.
These bugs man!

also experienced it. i wondered if it was impacted by android wear because i dont see it when i dont have my watch on.
i also noticed it goes into that DND mode when you make a call. so maybe it's not coming out of it when you hang up

DND is flaky

I tried using DND when i first got the phone but it was inconsistent and flaky.
Went back to silence premium and havent had any issues since.

i have the same problem, but also using android wear.. very odd.

I also have a smartwatch connected. Perhaps the bug is related to Android Wear.

So that's really interesting. I have a first gen Asus Zenwatch and I removed the Zenwatch Manager app late last week and the problem appears to have stopped. I still get the occasional DND turning on when I don't think I have activated it, but the cycling back and forth appears to have stopped. I should also note that I apparently got an upgrade to the watch firmware last week (it said upgrading when I woke up) so this could have resolved the issue as well. Regardless it does not seem to have happened in several days.

Android wear related I'm sure. When I go to hit volume down it says dnd- android wear

Same here. Huawei watch.

Only notice it when on phone call. Zenwatch 2. But, currently my watch isn't paired with phone.

Happens with Samsung Gear Fit 2 as well.

Here to add to the Android wear list, using an LG urbane.

Someone in another thread suggested deleting the three default automatic rules for do not disturb. I did that a couple days ago and haven't had the problem since. I have an Android Wear watch connected too.

Happens to me also, while connected to my Misfit Ray.

Moto360 having trouble connecting to Nexus 6?

Anybody else using a moto 360 with their nexus 6 on Verizon?
I am having connectivity problems between the watch and the phone. Sometimes I speak into the watch and Google is thinking, thinking, and then stops. Like it can't reach the phone. Anyone else?
I don't know if this is a Nexus 6 on Verizon, nexus 6 in general, or moto 360 problem.
As I'm reading about this, it seems like this might be not only a Nexus 6 and Moto 360 problem, but an Android Wear/ Lollipop problem. Hopefully if 5.1 comes out soon, it'll fix this.
No issues here since xmas with my 6.
Thanks for the reply. Weird.

This definitely happens to me too. After giving it a command the little circle keeps spinning until it comes back displaying "offline" even though I'm in an area with good reception. Sometimes though it just keeps spinning until I eventually swipe right to dismiss it and try again. Sometimes when trying to get directions from my watch it'll tell me to open Maps on my phone in order to continue.
An issue that persists for me is immediately upon plugging my Nexus 6 into its charger my 360 disconnects. I notice this immediately because the lost phone notification pops up on my watch and it vibrates sporadically. This is an issue that has really puzzled me because I can't tell what it could possibly be related to.
I used to have issues with text notifications not being pushed, but this has stopped happening. From time to time my watch will disconnect from my phone for seemingly no reason, and I'll get a "did you leave your phone?" notification. This happened today even, while I was using my phone. Other times when I walk out of range and then walk back into range it won't automatically reconnect. When this happens I have to open Android Wear, select Disconnect (even though Android wear will display "connecting...) And then Connect, and it'll connect again.
Almost half the time I go to send a text by voice I get the issue the OP mentioned, where the circle keeps spinning and nothing happens, or "offline" is displayed. I would really love a solution to this as sending texts is a core feature of Android Wear, and it totally defeats the purpose of the smart watch if it's supposed to save you from having to pull out your phone.
BTW I have an AT&T Nexus 6

Marshmellow update problems

So I was hesitant to proceed with the update since my 360 has been working so well and the battery life increased tremendously when I got my Note 5.
After a few days of the update pestering me I decided to go for it.
Now there are 2 things that are very annoying.
The first, whenever the screen comes on, there is a slight delay in the watch face.
It lights up with a black face and the hands are white, then it switches to whatever face I have and respected dials.
I'm not using facer or anything, just the stock moto Dials 2. This is very annoying and makes the watch seem slow.
The second thing is that the watchface doesnt turn on when I receive texts anymore.
The vibrate function still works, but the screen won't light up.
Is there a setting that changed making this the default? I would prefer the screen turn on when I receive texts.
Thanks
Make sure 'card previews' turned on from the android wear app, other wise your experience with the faces sounds buggy! A factory reset would help on that.
Factory reset doesnt work, this also happens to me since the update, looks like this is a firmware problem.
Damnit, I wish I didn't update.
Battery is also noticeably worse.

Same exact two issues here and I'm shocked I haven't seen more people complain about them. The first one is a nuisance but the second one completely devalues the purpose of the watch making it useless. Not seeing the text/email/etc... and only having a vibration on your wrist is pointless. I could keep my phone on vibrate in my pocket if I wanted to be notified of a new text/email without seeing the actual message. Please post a fix if one is found!

The first issue is because the watch now comes on in ambient mode first. Even if you don't use ambient mode. It sucks. Luckily i use Watchmaker for my watch face so I went in and made all the parts (hands date etc...) to be visible in ambient mode.
I have noticed that if I wait a couple of seconds the notification does appear on my watch screen but it is after the vibrate, not immediate. I thought it wasn't showing up at first too. Still, I wish it was quicker as I look right away.

I went back to using Facer for my watchface and the delay is gone.
Also did they completely remove the restart option? Now it's just power off, and then press and hold the side button.
I'm experiencing both issues as you do on 6.0.1.
Also yes, reboot option is gone from update.
The renamed reset with "unpair from watch". Not gone, just to mess with us.

I've also noticed that theater mode does not work after the mm update (unrooted, ota). I usually set it to theater mode at night to avoid burn in and just because I don't want it on all night. Now, it looks like it's blacked out, but when I wake up, the charging screen is lit up. Anyone else getting this?
I have the exact same issue after the update. Theater mode will not keep the display off if the watch is being charged. Off the charger, it works as expected. Quite an annoying bug.
If I turn ON the theatre mod with double press the power button before I put the clock on the charging dock, after that screen continue charge with screen off.
For me it's work.
Can anyone try it?

Just tried that - doesn't work for me. Screen turns off but once I put it on the charger, it comes back on after a few seconds. I'm watching it and it's still on a few minutes later.
Same here. Screen always turns back on
I'm getting the first bug the OP mentioned havn't noticed the second one though.
However the first bug is annoying enough, hopefully there'll be a quick patch.
Little patience, update to Marshmallow is great.

Sorry I read wrong...but wouldn't you just use the power off option and then turn back on to reboot?

And once again my notification settings are ruined!

Getting really frustrated with the constant changing of how Android Wear notifications are handled.
When I first got my 360 the Do Not Disturb settings on the watch and the phone were completely independant. Neither would affect the other. It was perfect as I could actually make them do exactly what I wanted.
Then in 5.0? they linked them and ruined it. There was no way to have my watch vibrate without my phone also vibrating.
Then when my phone got Marshmallow it worked perfectly again if I put my phone in Alarms Only mode. The watch would vibrate and the phone wouldn't.
Now that my watch has updated to 6.0, the watch no longer vibrates or lights up.
Useless. Again.
Is there seriously no way to get notifications on my watch only!?
Please note that I do not want to use the "Mute phone alerts" setting in the Android Wear app, as it cannot be automated like Do Not Disturb settings can. My phone is set to automatically go into Alarms Only mode when I am at work or sleeping at night.
Yeah I agree with you, I was very disappointed when I updated to marshmallow.
There was a similar complaint on the Google product forums and the Google representative said it's working as intended.
They directed everyone to go to the android wear app and submit feedback about the issue.
I did, but any say I am optimistic Google will change anything.

Notification sounds stop working randomly - pixel XL android 8.1

So this just started a few days ago, I noticed that the notification sounds stopped working. Locking the phone stops making a sound and all notifications are silent. Watching videos and incoming calls are audible however.
A reboot fixes the issue, but it returns soon after.
I didn't install any new apps recently. Updated some, but nothing new.
Any ideas?
Same thing happened to me upon upgrading to 8.1 If I reboot it solves it for a little, but shortly afterwards no notification sounds again. Not sure if anyone has found a solution or are having the same issue?
Same exact problem here. Very annoying. I'm thinking of trying a factory reset.
If you do a factory reset let us know if it works, I've been thinking the same, if I do I'll let you know.
I thought I was the only one having this issue. Randomly comes on and off.

I checked the sound settings after updating to 8.1. All of them had changed to silent or something else you couldn't hear. I reset every sound, alarm, ringtone, notifications, etc.
I have to do this after every update. This is due to the fact, that I use the factory image to update.
So, I think this happens when I use a bluetooth device.
I notice that after I disable Bluetooth after using a headset for a bit, that the sounds stop. Anyone else can test this theory out?
You may be on to something. I use the bt with my car everyday. Noticed the same thing.

After 8.1 on my pixel XL notification sounds have stopped working. I determined that it has something to do with the bluetooth. After connecting bluetooth and then turning it off that is when the problem happens. But, oddly enough, notifications sounds do work again when bluetooth is turned back on and connected....but stop again after bluetooth is turned off. A reboot fixes the problem but it happens again once bluetooth is used and turned off again. Please fix it Google.
Same for me but I only lose the Google Voice text message notification and a reboot fixes it.
It happened to me connected and not connected to Bluetooth. It would also happen to calls as well, missed some important phone calls because of it.
I am having the same problem. I'll check to see if BT connectivity is the trigger.
Same thing happening to me.. I use bluetooth daily too.
I am having the same issue. Any fixes? Has Google acknowledged?
Still happening with me. I have to reboot every few days to fix it. Very annoying.
Happening to me as well, specifically for text notifications. Sometimes the sound is triggered, sometimes it isn't.
I rebooted more than a week ago and it hasn't returned and I use a Bluetooth headset and Bluetooth in my car daily. I haven't gotten the January security patch, wondering if they slipped a fix in there?
Sent from my BTV-W09 using Tapatalk
I was having the same issue. I think it started after one of the security patches. I contacted google's support. they had me put it in safe mode and then see if it comes back. I did that, and it seemed to not break in safe mode. In theory, that means it is not a google issue, (Im sure they will play it that way) but Im not sure if it is caused by bluetooth, or something else. Anyone having the issues using a smart watch connected to it?
This is very annoying. I am still having this issue that started shortly after 8.1. Notification sounds stop working. A reboot fixes is it but the problem comes back shortly thereafter,,sometimes within 24 hours. Interestingly, the notifications still work while bluetooth is connected...not sure what to make of that. I am loathe to do a factory reset but if anyone has done it with success please let me know. Thank you.
Same thing here. I'm contacting Google regarding the issue. I've noticed a similar symptom since I've been using an android watch:
my watch gets notifications on time but my phone doesn't react. When i clear the notifications from my watch, my phone sets off multiple notifications in a row. Example: text, text, email, email, email, email, email, text, calendar. It's very annoying.
Now my phone makes no notifications. I've changed all notification sounds to full volume, I turn off bluetooth completely and my phone only vibrates for calls and doesn't make notification sounds or turn on the display as they come in.
While connected to a bluetooth device, the notifications come through that device but nothing or vibrate only on my phone.

Delayed Notifications In Android P

First off, I disabled adaptive battery in Android P. Ever since the upgrade from 8 to 9, I noticed that notifications are right around 5 minutes late. I have a couple time-sensitive apps that I need notifications right away. Gmail and another app for my home automation. In Android 8, the were flawless. However, ever since going to 9, not so much.
I also noticed that when I delete messages in the gmail app for gmail and an IMAP email server I have it does nothing with the messages on the server. I login to webmail from a computer and the messages are still in the Inbox.
Anyone have any ideas? I am going to try a wipe again to see if it resolves the issues, but I am out of ideas. I had the above issues in Android 9 beta as well. I would downgrade and it fixed them.
I have the same thing and it turns out it is a common issue with Pie. I have not found a solution yet. I have read all kinds of things people have tried and nothing seems to help. Sorry that I can't be more positive. Hopefully Google will figure something out and fix in an update.
Here is a two page post I started about the issue but there are also many others online describing the same thing:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/android-pie/904647-notifications-delayed-stopped.html
My thought is that the delayed notifications are due to Android Pies implementation of adaptive battery. Maybe try excluding the apps you want to receive notifications from in a timely manner?
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA Labs
You don't happen to have data saver in the quick tiles turned on by accident do you? That does prevent notifications from getting pushed. Both my parents had this on and a bunch of notifications came through after turning it off. I made sure to remove it from even being an available option.

been fighting with this issue as well, but it only seems to be gmail, and a couple other apps, my sms notifications seem to come through fine, at least as far as I can tell. I've turned off adaptive battery etc, nothing seems to make a difference. sometimes i can turn my screen on and all the notifications will come flooding in, other times they come through 10ish min later.
yes i have also these issue

Made sure it was off early on. No change.
The best way to describe my issue is that once the screen times out and has been off for at least about 5 minutes, notification sounds are delayed. It is sort of like the phone goes into a deeper sleep or something and then the problem arises. As soon as I use my fingerprint to wake the phone, all notifications blast through.
The delay can vary. Sometimes it is only 15 minutes or so, but often it is much longer. It is almost like once in a while an app wants to call home or something and to do so wakes up the phone just enough to allow some notifications through.
There also seem to be some issues with individual apps and notifications that may be fixed when a developer updates their app for Pie. For example, most apps notify immediately when the screen is on or within that first 5 minutes or so after the screen goes off. But since installing Pie, Kuna always has a delay of 5 to 10 minutes before notifying. Kuna does this 100% of the time. In fact if I have the phone awake, looking at the screen when walking out the front door, when the motion sensor is triggered, immediately there is a notification icon. But the sound notification is always delayed. This seems like an issue with Kuna and they are well know for being very slow with updates and fixes but eventually they do fix things. But the notification sound delays described in this thread do indeed seem like a system issue with Pie. Hopefully enough people will have the issue that Google will figure it out and fix.
I am having same issues after updating to Android P. At first, notifications came late about 5 min, but then they started to vary some coming in 15-30 minutes later. Can't figure out what is causing the time difference but either way I can't find a fix. I spoke with Google support and they had no fix as well.

Nope, they didn't mention anything about existing issues or being aware of the issue.
Any one found any solutions or fixes? I feel like my notifications are becoming even more delayed now and have also realized I'm not getting a lot of various notifications at all (through many different apps).
I am guessing you all are aware of this, and have tried, however I just found this recently and thought I would share for anyone that doesn't know.... Settings > Apps and Notifications > Advanced > Special App Access ..... Lots of options here with one of them being battery optimization for individual apps. After I upgraded to P, hardly any of my frequently used apps were given full battery use. Haven't played with all the other options there, however just granting apps full battery seemed to help me out.

One of the first things I tried was giving full useage, (no battery optimization) for all apps that I want notifications from. Did not help. Many other apps are still being optimized. I thought I had previously found a way to turn off all battery optimization but because I do have many apps in that list that are being optimized, I obviously did not. Right now I can't find a global setting to turn off battery optimization even though I thought I did before?
So I noticed this morning, that the main app/notification that's super delayed (5-10min after the event should have triggered) it doesn't happen when my phone is plugged in or i have the screen on in my hand. Even after going through all the battery save features and making sure this app is exempt from them, it still happens if the screen is off, or my phone is off the charger. super annoying. wish there was a fix for this already!

Verizon sent me a replacement because of this problem. I was apprehensive, but got a very nice re-furb. Still have the same problem, but I got a phone that is indicated as Verizon on the LG site. In developer mode, the bootloader unlock button works. I guess everything isn't bad. I sure hope Google straightens this out soon.

This happens only with Gmail on my phone - WhatsApp and Messages send instant notifications. Messages isn't optimized, the other apps are.
I can live with that, no big deal. Perhaps disabling battery optimization for Gmail would fix this, though.
Interesting note: I was talking to YouMail support today about something else but I asked about an issue where I get an email and transcript of a new voicemail but when I go to the YouMail app that voicemail is not shown until I drag down from the top of the screen to refresh the list. Support told me they are aware of this but can not do anything because it is a problem with the "latest Android version causing delay". So it is becoming a more widely known issue and hopefully Google will fix soon.
Thanks for all the feedback. Speaking of delay, I think I have tried just about every fix here and then some and still no luck. Wiping the phone did nothing as well. At this point, I would almost like to revert back to v8 to get this fixed.
I tried this supposed fix, (reply #51). https://forums.androidcentral.com/a...ifications-delayed-stopped-3.html#post6355714
No idea if it worked for me as when you restart the phone you need to do it again and less than 30 minutes after I went through the steps, my Pixel2 got the October update for Pie and required a restart!
