Screen Rotation Bug - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hey XDA Community,
my Nexus 7 has a very strange bug which exists now for about half a year:
once I turn the screen to landscape and I quit an app, the screen gets locked to landscape mode - no matter which rom or android version I'm using! When I clean install a rom it takes about 1-2 weeks until the bug appears. The only temporary fix for this is cleaning ART cache/cache in recovery. Using a manual screen rotation app helps, but isn't very comfortable... I don't believe it's a hardware issue, because the rotation works as soon as I clean the cache or install another rom as I already mentioned.
Any ideas for fixing this would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance! [emoji4]

Hello, actually the symptoms indicate a hardware issue. I posted earlier about it, please check it out.

I had a similar issue. A forced shutdown / reboot worked for me and fixed the issue.
When the tablet is on, press the power key until the tablet is powered off (forced poweroff), then turn it on again. Sensors should be back.

Well, correlation does not imply causation and here is IMHO a more likely explanation. While long-pressing it and waiting for forced shutdown you had also held and pressed down its back cover and, subsequently, the situated beneath sensor's connector. This is the fix as N7 motherboard gets touch, USB, accelerometer and compass data via the wide silver cable which often suffers from poor contact affecting all these functions and no abrupt power loss can bring them back.

With my device I tried shaking it and pressing in any way before forcing the shutdown. Thus for me I believe it was not an hardware issue but a low level software one.
Months are passed since that episode and the tablet had not the defect anymore.
Obviously what is good for my N72 may not be right for yours...

My Flo (completely stock) sometimes gets stuck in landscape. I can either reboot and fixes itself, or I have an app that will only open in portrait mode. Launching that always gets things to right again.
So I agree that it's not always a "hardware" issue.

I have found in most cases that it is the Google app causing it, if you clear the cache to it the screen will start rotating just fine right after it's cleared.

[BUG] Screen Sensitivity Issue-Lag (4.0.4-4.1.x)

Problem summary
Known cause (might be others): selecting an app from the Recents list (Task Switcher)
Temporary fix: turn the screen off, then back on
Workaround: avoid using Recents list (you can use a 3rd party task switcher instead)
How to test: open Messaging, hit Home, hit Recents, select Messaging from the list. Your screen will be less sensitive until you turn the screen off and back on. You can view the pressure by going to Settings -> Developer Options -> turn on Pointer Location. This will allow you to see the Prs of each tap in your status bar. Normally your lightest taps that register will show anywhere from 0.28 to 0.32. However, after this bug is activated, you will mostly get values over 0.40 for your light taps. This is actually a very noticeable increase, especially when trying to type quickly.
Please report any other known methods to "activate" this bug. After re-assigning my Recents button to a 3rd party app (I'm using Simple Task Switcher), I haven't seen this bug at all. It seems that a couple of people have seen it produced by something other than Recents, but they haven't narrowed it down (or reliably reproduced it on purpose).
Please star this issue officially so Google can fix:

Hehe yes this s gonna be a difficult one to confirm. But it is definitely not dirty hands. To clarify, a quick press of the power button to lock then unlock completely fixes the issue. Same fingers suddenly register perfectly. This is driving me nuts as the phone is not even usable right now. Literally.

ios 6.2 doesnt get issues.
I don't know about your other experiences, but as far as the browser goes I have the same scrolling effects as you do. I think this is how it is meant to be. They tightened the scrolling a lot and I kinda like it. Before one small flick would send me across the whole page, which was kinda annoying. Just my preference.
I'm not having this problem. It would drive me crazy too. Been using my phone alot over the past two days and I didn't run into this problem even after almost 1h of continuous surfing. Also a few checkpoints of Shadowgun didn't trigger it.
But you can confirm your problem if you enable "cursor position" in the dev options (hope that's what it 's called in english). "Prs" and "Size" should need a lot more than around 0.30-0.40 to register your touch if you have the problem you describe.
I am sorry that you're experiencing this, but 4.0.4 has nothing to do with this. 4.0.4 is just software, Galaxy Nexus is not a pressure-sensitive device, it is merely touch-sensitive. Which means that software gets an analogue signal from the touchscreen, either 1 or 0. It has no 'range' of sensitivity, so it cannot decrease in sensitivity in software (if it did, then it would not work at all).
This is entirely hardware issue and I suggest either making sure your screen is clean, your screen protection thing (if you use one) isn't acting up or if your hardware has become faulty (have you dropped it recently?).
If problem persists then return under warranty.
My wife had this issue once.
It was the third party launcher she was using.
I don't think its a matter of touch sensitivity dropping, its a matter of the system just being too slow to really work right.
It was ADW EX, fwiw.

Lol that is hilarious. You forgot the step where its the OS that actually processes the input data, so in that process, a ton of problems can arise.
And personally, since 4.0.4 I have also been experiencing a "similar" issue. When scrolling down (and only down), I experience a kind of "lag" like if it only registers the swipe movement half an inch lower. Its not a big deal, but still an issue.
Edit : What he explains as "pressing very hard" is most likely the fact that when you press harder you actually cover more surface, so the amount of extra input data can definitely impact the behavior.
I had issues for a few hours after the 4.0.4 update, where my softkey buttons weren't responding. Thankfully, it seems to be fine now, but it was a cause for concern.

Thank you my friend, I should have thought of this; now I have numbers to confirm this. So with cursor option enabled I can get down to 0.30, managed 0.28 once. However when the bug starts, I can confirm that I cannot get below 0.60. It just refuses to register that input for some reason.
I lock the screen, 1 second is all it takes, and now it registers down to 0.30 again and all touch works properly. Its almost like some type of memory leak issue is the way it feels to me. It only starts happening after a few min of use.
Its definitely an issue now that I can see the pressure numbers. The question is what the hell can I do about it. I flashed aokp29 with the latest 4.0.4 ota merged in, problem still occurs. I'm gonna try stock 4.0.2 or 4.0.1 just to see. Thanks.
I have never had much luck upgrading Linux versions. That's why I start fresh every time with Android. Lol

Before I start digging, anyone know specifically which driver controls the touch input? I'll try looking thru github.
Also I was on stock 4.0.1 prior to this. So this could be normal behavior for everyone but everybody is used to it since nobody stayed on 4.0.1 like me. Cause I can easily say this is difficult to notice if you aren't paying attention. The question is, why does locking the screen temporarily change it back...
I can confirm some of what you are saying..sometimes when I'm browsing the scrolling tightens up..I lock the phone then unlock it and it is smooth again..doesn't happen all the time tho..doesn't bother me but I've noticed it

I can also confirm. This morning I found the Swiftkey was lagging on Facebook. Something like the phone did not receive the touch. Then I rebooted and now it is ok.
I did not get this issue on 4.0.2 and I don't install anything new on 4.0.4.
The way I installed 4.0.4 was from the official factory image, so my phone is fresh! I reinstalled all apps manually as well. Nothing fancy apps.
I know this is my first post, but I can definitely confirm this issue.
I use my Galaxy Nexus for development, so the screen is always on. The sensitivity goes down very quickly.
My phone was an International GNEX that I loaded the US firmware on and then I flashed the OTA 4.0.4 update.

Just to point out, the phone is all digital. It does not get an analog signal from touching the screen. Also to that point you said analog but then described digital with the 1 and 0
Has anyone affected tried going between 4.0.2 and 4.0.4? To check the possibility of a driver or some related value changing.
Also, if not fixed by going back to 4.0.2, this could be due to current leakage from somewhere causing the touch to not work properly. I've seen it on other capacitive touch devices, though mainly when a non-compatible charger is connected. When you shut the screen off, the charge causing the problem/interference with the touch is temporarily dissapated, but then comes back after you use it again. Probably very unlikely in this case, unless Google changed something in the touch driver that makes it more sensitive to interference, which in turn messes with actual input from fingers.

Its possible. I was on 4.0.1 so perhaps this issue originated in 4.0.2 but I never noticed since I didn't update then. I can add that I did multiple wipes and clean flashes, and also tried both aokp 28 and 29 (new 4.0.4 ota merged), and happened on both.
I'll post what I just sent to arbiter which gives more insight.
From my extra testing under normal use my light touches register 0.28-0.33. Especially on swipes, the end of the swipe registers 0.28 as the finger travel breaks contact with the screen giving that swipe extra input which pushes the swipe motion further extra boost. When the bug starts the touch swipe won't even break 0.38-0.40, and that extra swipe data is lost resulting in the end of the swipe data points being excluded and swipes travel half the distance.
This gets exacerbated on the keyboard when fast typing light pressed. Its so bad it frustrates my face off cause typing just ceases to be possible. Such a difficult issue to diagnose.

Back and Menu fuction not working sometimes

I have had some weird problems with my back and menu keys the last week or so. I have searched quite a bit but have not found anything that describes my problem. Lots of similar stuff, but nothing that really fits.
Now to the description of my problem:
After a seemingly random time after booting (~2min-2days) the phone's back and menu keys stop working. The gestures for back and menu with the S-Pen also stop working at the same time, and virtual back and menu keys stop working as well.
A reboot (or hot reboot) fixes the problem or not depending on the app used to hot reboot ("Rebooter (fast reboot)" from 'SmartUX' does not fix the problem, but "Reebooter" from 'davidjr621' does).
I have the felling that wiping the Dalvik Cache and the Cache partition has increased the time between the occurance of the problem, but since the time was very variable to begin with, I am not 100% sure about that.
Iam currently running OmegaROM v7.4, but I had the problem before upgading from v7.2.
Does someone have an idea how I can identify the source of the problem?
To me it looks like a weird software problem, like some process that is ment to handle the signals stopped working but is seemingly still runnig, since killing everything (Hot Reboot) solvesthe problem. But that is just speculation, since I don't know how exactly the back and menu key keypresses are handled in Android.
Any help would be apprciated. Places to look for clues or any ideas about what might be causing this.
The problem occurs more often when I switch from mobile data to WiFi or back, but not every time.
I will try to see if I find somethig in logcat givig any clues...
I'm sure you know that back and menu keys are temporarily disabled when you put your S-Pen near screen.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Yes, but the gestures with the pen should still work, they don't when I am having this problem.
It occurs with the pen docked as well.
I did a full wipe, including the "Internal SD-Card", and flashed OmegaROM v8.0. I am hoping that this weird problem is gone now.
By now I am sure the full wipe solved the prblem.
Just in case someone with the same problem stumbles upon this thread.

Touch screen problem

Weird this. I sometimes find that the 'dock' area of the screen will not respond to new touches. Therefore I can't open the phone or the app drawer etc. Odd thing is that I can drag icons from elsewhere over the area which makes me think this is more a software issue than a hardware one. If I open Chrome links can't be opened if they are in the affected area. It's just weird.
Some times this requires a reboot to clear but other times it appears to clear by itself. From my observations it seems to start after using the camera app.
Any ideas? Could this still be down to a defective device?
Matt.
I experienced the exact same thing. Everything else works normal though. It happens after using the Camera app and goes away after I clear the app from the multitasking window (which I have to do app by app since also "Clear all" can't be tapped). I just hope its a software bug that can be fixed by an update.
Clearing running apps doesn't sort the problem on mine. Your problem certainly sounds very similar though especially given the connection with the camera app in your case as well. Tried a factory reset and the problem persists but it is very random and difficult to reproduce. Still not 100% sure it's not some sort of hardware fault as I can't really see any touch screen related problems being reported on the web and this one is very irritating.
I experienced this once - also after having the camera. I rebooted and haven't experienced it again.
I have the same problem where my touch screen doesnt respond in the corners sometimes. Really abnoxious when playing games and then i just lose because of this. I send my phone to HTC and i waited 20 days to get my phone back with the same problem as before. First i downloaded a touch screen test app, and there it didnt show any response in the corners but another touch screen test app registered every touch.
I have the same problem. Seems to be caused by either the camera or the photos app. Closing them doesn't help here, but a reboot does. It's something that started happening recently so I hope an update of some sort will fix this.
Very annoying... If anyone has found a permanent solution I hope they'll share it here.

Yes it is a software issue. U just need to revert the photos app back to the factory version. This can be done by going into settings >apps >photos app and the click on uninstall updates. Then reboot your device and the problem should be gone. Try it out and tell us if it works for u as well.

Unresponsive display

I've gotten this problem since 20 days ago where my Google Maps get frozen in the middle of my trip. And I had reboot the device multiple times (4-5 times, sometimes skipping the LineageOS booting animation).
After fiddling over 2 weeks, I finally switched to LineageOS 17.0 now (previously using 15.1). The problem still persists.
The problem is : the screen froze, I seem able to tap something on screen but the display doesn't change anything despite my interaction with screen. This especially pronounced when I stop my screen interaction (i.e. not scrolling) on these apps
- Google chrome (say, reading any articles on web)
- Quora (especially when I about to scroll down on author bio)
- Google Sheets
- Maps
but this unresponsiveness doesn't appear at all when I:
- Play any kind of games
- watching YouTube (with the app)
In general, it seems anything that uses webview can cause the screen freezes if I leave it couple seconds. At first I thought changing from android webview to chrome webview implementation changes this. It doesn't.
The "cure" I found is simply turning the display off for 40 seconds ~ 75 seconds, and turning it back on, where I can interact with lock screen fine again. Any time lower than 40 seconds will simply show the frozen display again the time I turn the screen on.
Is it possible it's a hardware problem? (faulty RAM/storage) after using this for 2.5 years) Since full system wipe and re-install doesn't entirely solve the problem. The first time I encountered this is when I navigate with my Google Maps and the screen simply froze out during drive, and I had to restart the device multiple times, worrying that my device is broken. The next time I drive, I leave it only on Ambient Display and it didn't freeze at all.
So... any idea how to troubleshoot this?
It seems the problem is more severe than just Android.
Because even in TWRP, I noticed the display need to wait ~1 minute from the last time I turn off the display (push the power button) to reactivating it.
If I try to turn it on, the display will give black color, but I still can actually interact with the system.

Thanks for responding.
I already enable "Show taps" on developer options. But the problem is that the screen freeze happened when there was no touch at all (i.e. I just looking at the screen, reading)
There's new observation I made today that : usually the screen doesn't want to immediately awaken when I just turn the screen off.
Today I tried to remove fingerprint from lock screen, the screen now is able to respond quickly again upon pressing power on button. It's still as responsive to power on when I add pattern to the device lock mechanism.
I'm not too sure whether this is OS level problem or even closer to hardware problem because this kind of unresponsiveness is also apparent even when I boot to TWRP.

That is one big weird problem, i've never encounter something like that since i ever using a smartphones.
It does really sound like, it just a software problem. But if it also happen in TWRP, it doesn't look like it.
I also have installed LOS17 by Arian before too, and i dont have that problem.
Sorry man i have no idea nor expert about it
It could be your battery is dying?, if your battery cant give enough power to the screen already, screen gonna act like crazy i.e ghost touch etc.
I have a broken battery been using it for 2Year + because of the battery my screen has a problem too. I replaced it last december 2019 and everything went normal again.

I don't think it's a battery problem. I see that I can play game for 1hr+ fine. A game that require exact timing of 2 touches on top of that. So that ghost touch really doesn't appear.
But yeah, it's really 2 contrasting sign
- In one hand, it seems an OS problem because I can simulate an environment where the screen definitely won't be frozen for hours, while on specific other environment, the screen freeze can happen very quickly between release and re-occurence.
- On the other hand, the problem seem doesn't stop on OS level because it can be found in TWRP.
If I read an answer on Quora that shows GIF image on the section I read, the screen freeze 100% won't happen. I tried the same thing on imgur too, the screen freeze won't happen.
So it seems that as long as the screen is showing dynamic content, it won't freeze (that's why game and YouTube doesn't show this kind of problem, but reading a web full of text/static images can)
A bit of update : I have left my phone in off state for 4-5 days. And I have been using it again, albeit, less extensively since my main phone has changed to K20 Pro.
Long story short : I haven't encountered screen freeze again. But this is just after 2 days playing with less intensity.
I wonder what really went wrong.

3 screen off issues

Hi everyone.
I have a note 10 + 256 go exynos from france.
SInce about last update one ui2.5, I have seen 3 issues which I think are related.
- AOD tap to show not working
- Double tap to wake not working
- When I remove the phone from the ear during a call the screen does not light up anymore whereas before yes.
I almost returned the phone in warranty a short time ago because my screen only registered two fingers,a few days later I received an update that fixed this problem.
For these 3 problems I tried 3 things :
- Update touch screen firmware via *#2663#
- Factory reset
- Reflash the stock firmware with odin and frija
I also have another problem a few times a day the screen freezes, I have to lock unlock the screen and it works again..
Do you think it's a software problem or a hardware problem (damaged screen, damaged sensor or other)?
Please help me thanks.
Lol, firmware and/or software; maybe a settings or permissions issue as there are many. Hardware rarely fails unless it receives severe abuse. You can perform some of the builtin hardware tests just to be sure.
Try using the factory load if the apk in question has been updated or wait for an update that fixes it. Be sure to check the Gallaxy Store for updates.
I'm still running on Pie because it's fast, stable and functional. No scope storage that I don't want or need.
Once you get an OS optimized and running well there's little advantage to upgrading many times unless the new OS is really worth it.
Many times it's not... I'm still running W7 too.
You invariably end up with new issues, hunting down all new glitches and worse, since it's new there not many online solutions.
Thank you for your help.
I mentioned the 3 main methods of fix but of course before that I had already tried the basic things like clearing the system cache, checking the permissions of the AOD application as well as deleting this data.
I also checked the sensors with * # 0 * # but I did not find anything problematic
I even tried to flash the november update with odin and frija and I got a soft brick, so I don't even dare to try a downgrade firmware, I don't have the knowledge, I read that I had to keep the same bootloader and I get lost in the different firmwares
Those are all system apks that run in the background.
Is Android System configured correctly?
Try clearing it's data and of course the system cache.
A hard reboot as well.
It's interesting you lost the proximity sensor.
Thanks.
Yes I have cleared the system cache several times, android system too. I even did a hard reset. I think more and more of a hardware problem, because all these functions are linked to the fact that the screen does not wake up by touch when it is turned off.
the proximity sensor still works at least partially because it flashes well during a call and turns off the screen when I put the phone to my ear, but no wake up when I take it off my ear.

If it happened after the firmware update... it's in the firmware or software.
Bad firmware can sometimes blowout a cpu but doubt it damaged the hardware controlling just that one feature of the touchscreen.
If that was the case the touchscreen wouldn't work at all.
Maybe the firmware is ok but got corrupted during the download or flash.
A defective memory module could corrupt the load but again that rarely happens.
So back to the firmware/software/settings...
Maybe someone here has seen this before or has a better idea to sort it out.
Honestly I'm not sure it's exactly after an update.
It's just that it's not functions that I use very often. I don't call a lot of people and most of the time I use very little Aod and double tap2wake.
Usually when I grab my phone to use it I unlock it directly with the fingerprint.
when i mentioned the problem where my screen only recognized two fingers at this time , aod and dt2w were already weird as it only worked on the top half of the screen not on the bottom half ..the update solved the problem for the 2 fingers but not for the fact that aod and dt2w only works on the upper half.
Now for some time aod and dt2w no longer work at all no matter where I touch the screen.
I want to clarify that I use a screen protector with loca glue but that it is from the beginning and that it has never been a problem before.
I know this is a weird problem thanks for your patience
I never use a lock screen or the fingerprint sensor.
There may be a conflict because that... disable and see if that helps.
The screen could goof up the proximity sensor. Probably not but next time it's off, check it out.
No worries; these devices fascinate me.
Hope you sort it out; eventually one usually does

2x post
when i did the factory reset it was the first thing i tried before even resetting a password but it didn't work anyway.
For the screen protector I use the same brand from the beginning and it has never caused me a problem of this kind, but maybe this one is defective ..
I would have to remove it to try but I have lazy to change it again because I had to change it twice in a little while.
Hoping that by dint of applying the loca glue I haven't damaged anything.
Thanks
Nah the glue didn't hurt anything; it's well sealed.
The tap on AOD I never use but I double tap to turn the screen on/off. If I lost that I be witch hunting.
Try increasing the touch sensitivity if you haven't already... and make sure no other apps have accessibility permissions that could conflict. Same for device administrator permissions.
Try it in safe mode as well.
