Helllo there!
I'm making a new thread because I couldn't find anyone with the exact same problem and don't want to brick my phone or such.
Now to the problem: every time I try to update my HTC one m8 (Europe) it stops when installling and tells me this:
Code:

this device has htc/htc_europe/htc_m8:4.4.4/KTU84P/389838.6:user/release-keys.

You should post your getvar all (deleting your imei number and S./N ) there is a post here but it is in german with the same problem which points to an incorrect recovery!

Being rooted or not has no bearing on OTA update.
Also, it seems that you are trying to tell the OP to root (not completely clear, with the 2 word post), when he clearly states he is already rooted.
Getvar info added!
By the way, the other guy had a different problem.
Has anyone got an idea of whats wrong?

Wrong stock recovery image.
OTA needs stock recovery 3.28.401.9 (389838.9) or 4.16.401.10 (448934.10)
but you installed 3.28.401.6 (389838.6)
Get the right recovery image, OTA will proceed.
I have one here - 3.28.401.9_recovery.img : http://sourceforge.net/projects/htconem8/files/Recovery/3.28.401.9_recovery.img/download

Okay thank you so far!
But now it comes up with a different error; It says "/system/xbin/nc has unexpected contents".
Let me tell you the whole story:
Some time ago i installed busybox, xposed and xprivacy (and luckypatcher) and used it normaly.
Then the Lollipop update came around and since it wasnt working (giving out the unexpected contend error) i thought it would be a good idea to just do a factory reset.
It didnt work afterwards either, so i went here to ask what the problem was, and i was told it was because of xposed.
However, xposed wasn't installed anymore (the app), and (i think) the newer versions installed it somewhere else, so installing and then uninstalling (the button in the app) it didnt delete the old directory. (Btw. in an last attempt i tried installing the stick recovery and got the wrong one apparently)
So yeah, i have no idea on how to fix this problem, but i would be okay with having to reset my phone.

That's expected
There are a few methods to solve your problem.
The easiest one is RUU it back to stock.
Follow this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
You need to relock bootloader and also make a backup of your internal storage files/pic/music or whatever you like to keep.
The RUU will update your device to the latest

You don't have S-Off - that's why you need to relock bootloader
That's the only difference - read the thread thoroughly.
First step - relock bootloader with command fastboot oem lock
then follow the step 3 onwards
Also note you need to use htc_fastboot.exe not the usual fastboot.exe
Anything you need to ask, you can ask there. I believe @EddyOS will gladly help you

I believe you do know this is M8 thread and not HTC Desire 820n
But .. this is what you can do to fix your problem ...
Check for OTA as usual, download OTA then select install later.
Connect your device to PC then copy the OTA zip from internal storage\download folder to PC
Open the OTA zip with 7-zip, you'll see firmware.zip. Open firmware.zip and extract out recovery.img <--- this is the one that you need.
Boot your device to bootloader
Fastboot flash this extracted recovery.img
Reboot, check for OTA again, this time select install now
Done
I'm sorry for posting here but i did it and it's not working when i'm flashing the recovery i tooked it from the OTA it's give me error when flashing it the update is lollipop and i'm on kitkat 4.4.4

First ... remove the serial no. & imei no in your post as they are sensitive info.
You have 3 options :
1. Restore 4.16.401.10 TWRP backup - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60147089&postcount=5104
It read as WWE 4.20.401.10 TWRP Backup but that's typo error .. it should read as WWE 4.19.401.10 TWRP Backup
or
2. Relock your bootloader and install 4.16.401.10 RUU.exe - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56140330&postcount=1
(make backup of your internal storage important data as this will wipe everything)
or
3. Relock your bootloader and fastboot flash the 4.16.401.10 RUU.zip - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
(make backup of your internal storage important data as this will wipe everything and also note you need htc_fastboot instead of normal fastboot)
thanks for your fast response.
adb restore <file name> ?
4.16.401.10_HTC__001_TWRP.7z
It is 7zip . This should be repacked as a normal ZIP ?
edit
d:\htc\One\Data>adb restore 4.16.401.10_HTC__001_TWRP.ZIP
adb: unable to connect for backup

Read the thread linked in my signature on how to restore a TWRP backup.
You need to extract it with 7-zip and put those files in your backup folder not to ADB it nor fastboot it.
hi guys
I have similar problem.
i flashed stock recovery and ran OTA update 4.16.401.13 (i think) on modified, unlocked, rooted, S-ON HTC One M8 in South Africa, and now stuck on boot logo or black screen.

can i also use the files above to try to fix the phone?
Thank you. restore is in progress.

No need to relock bootloader.
Only when running RUU.exe or RUU.zip you need to relock bootloader when S-On.
Using a backup no need to relock bootloader. Just flash stock recovery then do OTA.
If that backup fails (as I'm not sure whether that's fully stock or not), I put up my own stock backup in my thread .. you can try that later if current one fails.
Restore successfully completed. Now, in order not to have problems with latest OTA , i have to restore stock recovery, right ?

Yes. OTA downloaded and I tried twice to install, but all it did was restart phone into bootloader.
After flashing stock recovery, I rebooted phone, ran OTA and update started.
After update completed, phone rebooted to white start screen with HTC logo and froze there.
I have read that this is probably because I ran OTA on rooted device.
So now i am stuck with no OS and hope these files will help.
Thanks ckpv5 for help and link.

can confirm above files and files/procedure in signature link worked.
OTA worked and now updated to 4.16.401.13
thanks very much guys.
now to flash custom TWRP recovery and re-root.
if I may ask, what is the safest method to run OTA in future?
i dont really know. Anyway , how about your free space. i dont know what happened because now i have less that 1 GB free space.

The best solution for me if I ever have this problem .. I will format data (not wipe data) in TWRP before I restore the backup (of course need to backup internal storage data somewhere else first)
Done . Now i have free space. many thanks !!
Hi,

It is stucked on Android Recovery, and have tried everything. Ruu's, factory reset . . . everything. Ruu always gives me back error 155.

I am having the same problem!! I installed the official update via the system update, installed then at the end it told me there is a problem with the OTA thing and that is it. Since then my device is bricked and I'm in between the recovery menu and the bootloader.
I don't wanna root my device and didn't try it. This sucks. I wish I can rollback this mess to Lollipop.

I had a similar issue, bricked my HTC ONE M8 by updating through OTA.
But I got it fixed by flashing RUU through htc_fastboot.exe, it took a while but was effective.
In your case, if you need to find your right CID, first get your mid number and check if you can find a right CID to your MID, then write it through fastboot. Hope it can help you.
If you will need a detailed how to, let me know

My CID is 11111111, it says so in the bootloader. Can you provide links on where to get the RUU and the flashing app? Thanks
The bootloader says LOCKED yet my device is the international variant. Is it related or does it mean that my bootloader is locked?

Hey, I've made a simple research and found that your serial number belongs to HTC ONE M8 Taiwan version, so first you need to change your MID to 0P6B150 (optional but strongly advised for applaying offical updates) and then the CID to CHT__601 (Taiwan).
Only after this you need to find the right RUU and flash it, or use RUU.zip and flash it through htc_fastboot.exe
Hope it will be helpfull

My CID is 11111111, it says so in the bootloader. Can you provide links on where to get the RUU and the flashing app? Thanks
The bootloader says LOCKED yet my device is the international variant. Is it related or does it mean that my bootloader is locked?

Send me your detailed phone information as it was shown in the first post of the thread so I can tell you how to change you CID and other identification numbers that in the end will let you apply the update
Having the original CID is very important, cuz your bootloader was relocked? otherwise they could've not changed you CID/
Check your serial information go to HTC Warranty Check - Lookup
this tell you right region information of your phone so you can easily find right CID and MID numbers of your phone

Can you walk me through it? When I connect my device to my laptop, it shows nothing. the HTC sync app fails to detect my phone as well.
But my bootloader detects it. It goes from FASTBOOT to FASTBOOT USB

Hi,
The other day i've tried to update my M8 to marshmallow via OTA and my device get bricked . . .
It is stucked on Android Recovery, and have tried everything. Ruu's, factory reset . . . everything. Ruu always gives me back error 155.
Don't know what else to do. It is new, but I think the people that sold it to me have changed things like CID and it have S-OFF.
I'll post the "fastboot getvar all" command results:

1 - see the links in the end of #7 post? Go there and first get the drivers and adb-fastboot tools
once you get try command fastboot getvar all this will show you the detailed information of your device
2 - once done get HTC ONE M8 all in one tool kit, it would be easier for you to use instead typing commands all the time
3 - unlock your bootloader by following the instructions on the program listed above
4 - search for right CID number of your phone and write it by using command fastboot oem writecid (YOUR CID)
5 - relock bootloader
6 - flash the right RUU (check if it is right for your original new CID)
Keep in mind that I've done this on my own devices, and I don't take any responsibility in case if you get your device bricked

You cannot simply flash the RUU .. the first question is .. is the RUU the right one for your device ?
You have SUperCID as you mentioned above .. what about the MID ?
Is it 0P6B10000 ? If yes .. then go ahead

Have you updated the HTC USB drivers, also linked above ?

You can't extract/unzip an encrypted HTC RUU zip.
You never reply to my first question .. is your bootloader LOCKED, RELOCKED or UNLOCKED ?
If it is UNLOCKED .. I can suggest another method .. restore a TWRP backup.
If you have installed both adb/fastboot and latest HTC USB driver (and uninstall HTC Sync Manager) I don't see a reason why it cannot work for you when it worked for the other guy (post #14)
Do you have a microSD card ? You can do it different way.

Sorry, it is RELOCKED.
I'll try to do all from 0 again. If it does not work we can UNLOCK it and try the TWRP method you say?
Yes I do have an SD card in my phone, but my PC doesn't detect it and have no SD adapter. I've heard that there's some fastboot command "push" or something like that to put the RUU on it but don't know how it works.
Thanks for your time, I'm desperate. . .
You need to unlock bootloader to go with TWRP method.
Just try again ... with a Windows PC with USB2.0 (many people report USB3.0 is a hit and miss)
Make sure the HTC Sync manager is uninstalled after you install the driver.

You flashed a rom that wouldn't work on Sprint device by default. You need proper kernel to run with this ROM but I will not go further on this.
Your best bet now is install RUU meant for Sprint.
Everything that you need is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173

Thnks for your reply sir , i was trying to do this , but now my phone cannot connect to the RUU installation wizard , How can i do it
I'm not on PC .. unable to write proper guide.
The easier one for you is download 0P6BIMG_Sprint_HTC_One_M8_4.25.651.14_RUU.zip
then rename it to 0P6BIMG.zip and put it on your microSD, not in any folder.
On bootloader, press power once to go to hboot. Once on hboot it will scan the file and ask whether to update. Volume up to update and let it do its stuff. Once completed, reboot.
After setup complete, delete that zip file.
Before that, if you select to go to recovery, do you still have TWRP ?
If yes, boot to recovery and make backup of your internal storage as the above procedure will wipe everything on your device except microSD.
Or you can install any ROM with sprint support (like the one I'm using now) then you don't need RUU.
After completed and ROM is booting, you can install any other ROM with Sprint support.
But it's best for you to update your firmware to Marshmallow first.

You downloaded the one that I mentioned ? I made a mistake there (wrong file copied).
You need the one that have 4.25.654.14 in it, sorry.
When I said update to Marshmallow first, that's after you fixed current problem.
After you successfully installed 4.25.654.14, then do OTA to 4.25.654.18 then later to 6.20.654.3
(That's why I don't like to help when not on PC.. sometime copy wrong filename)

Yeah, checked multiple times, but I didn't find any proper files according to my problem. I mean , I've got the RUU files there, but I have to flash through ruu only the firmware zip because I've relocked the bootloader, and since I have wrong recovery flashed (simple M8 recovery) can't do anything else. I think this is the only solution.
Btw thanks for replying.
I don't get it ...
If there is RUU for your device version, use the RUU to fix the problem.
You don't need firmware.zip when there is RUU available (when you install the same version as your current firmware written on bootloader)

I need the firmware cause the RUU for my HTC doesn't works, it starts flashing the file but shuts down with an error ... Sorry for not mentioning that . Flashing the firmware I think the only solution for me :/
Hi GombaFelho,
I had the same problem, always the wrong firmware error message.
I unlocked and did again an "oem lock". Check again the drivers for RUU.
In end it worked for me with the ARUWizard.exe and this version:
RUU_M8_QL_UL_L50_SENSE60_Vodafone_UK_1.11.161.1_Radio_1.0.U20410.1G50408_15.00_016_F_release_430447_signed
First there is a downgrade and after that you can uprade the software on the fly.

I tried that one too, but some magical way my update stuck at 0/8 so idk what should I do ..
I've read somewhere a solution for this, but can't remembere where
When you have that stuck problem, that's pc usb connection problem not RUU.
You need latest htc usb drivers and use usb2.0

When you said you wait for it to load up .. are you saying your device is in working condition, only wrong recovery installed ?

I shouldn't wait for anything , right ? I mean it's not that new phone, so I assume there aren't going to be a new firmware for this version...
It was in a working condition, but after I relocked the bootloader, it went off. Had to start with the Pow+Vol.Up+Vol.Down combo, it worked but now just stops at the HTC ONE screen...
Anyways I really appreciate that you took the time to help me
I was wondering if there is some way to unlock the bootloader without using the HTCDev ? (cause I can't factory reset my phone) that would be so good...
I have an M8s too, and had the same issue.
To fix this. First try to relock and unlock the your bootloader it will prompt yes or no bla bla... Tick yes
If none of this work. Install the latest recovery from lalleman's server and pick a custom ROM, I recommend CM12 since you don't a choice cause Pandora is a little buggy.
This should work for you. Good luck with that
