I have a gen 2 FireTV hooked to a TV that can only do 1080i and 480i/p. The FireTV doesn't support 1080i, and the TV doesn't support 1080p, so the FireTV falls back to 480p, which is fine. This has always worked until this latest 5.2.4.0 update. After the update it will not boot while connected to this TV. It will boot when connected to a 1080p device, but the upgrade is in a half completed state and every time it is restarted the optimize storage screen appears. I spent about an hour with Amazon support and they finally confirmed 480p should still work so they sent me a new device. Everything was fine until a few days later when the new device has updated itself and failed in the same manner. I'm sure this is a bug, but there's nothing Amazon can really do for me. Has anyone else had the same issue? Is it possible to fix this myself? Should I order a usb A-A cable to try to debug it?
When I power the device while hooked to this TV, I get a signal for a second or two, basically when the device should be switching to 480p and then displaying the FireTV logo, but then the signal goes away and the white light just fades in and out on the device indefinitely.
UPDATE: I managed to capture the device crashing via the system log. I booted it without the hdmi cable connected, logged in via adb shell, ran logcat, then plugged in the cable. The device can be seen switching to 480p, then the display service crashes which then leads to a cascade of other services crashing and eventually the device shuts down. I sent the log to Amazon, hopefully they'll be able to confirm it's an actual bug and fix it.
I also have noticed 480p is broken. Can't get Amazon to decide if it is a bug or a feature deprecation yet. It looks like a bug, because 480p is still listed in the options when you resolution cycle, but the device stays in 1080p mode for me.

My fireTV boots on quickly showing the Amazon Logo, then the screen goes blank and the message "not supported mode" comes on the TV.
I've swapped HDMI cables. Keeps doing the same thing.
What could be the issue? It was working fine before.
Thanks,
Dave
Try a different TV.. Your TV must not support 1080p, after you set it to 720p try that TV again and you'll be good

Why specifically do you need to reboot? (Audio issues, freezes, ?) It might make a difference in the finding the right person to diagnose. Does it sleep or does it stay on overnight?

yes the fire tv goes to sleep but in the morning The fire tv is non responsive cant do anything with remote no lights on front and blank screen.
Try using CTRL+ALT+DELETE on your bluetooth keyboard.
I found it by accident -- it will actually reset the Fire TV instantly.
I've had the same problem on both my unrooted devices.
I usually reboot using the remote (hold down the main clicking button + play)
Is you firetv usually idle with kodi running? i always have kodi running when this happens
I don't have a Fire TV, but I have had this problem with my Fire TV Stick, which was hooked to my Samsung TV and now my Vizio TV. Every time I go to use the Fire stick, I have to unplug it from power and plug it back in. It is very annoying. I don't get any messages, just a black screen.

I have the same problem. It seems to be getting worse. Pretty much everytime i use it it happens.
This happens to me as well. When plugged into my VIZIO tv, and running Kodi 17.2, the Fire TV will spontaneously enter a reboot cycle and will remain there until I unplug the power, wait 2 minutes and plug it in again. I have the new Fire TV 4k (hanging dongle), but this also happened when i had a quad core Fire TV Stick.. my original Fire TV Stick (with Voice Remote) continues to operate without issue to this day, albeit much slower since Amazon removed the Youtube app.
Oddly, the same device does NOT suffer from this issue if I plug it into my LG tv... Could it be an issue with the HDMI port (Port 1 (ARC) that I am plugged into??
Glad to know im not alone. Sometimes it will last for days, sometimes not.
I do use "advanced task killer" and "fast reboot" to kill kodi, netflix, firefox etc when Im not using them.
Guys, i used to have exact same problem and luckily was able to fix it. In my case as soon as the aftv goes in sleep mode it reboots in recovery mode . So because i have the TWRP customer recovery the box is not able to apply that update because is not the stock recovery. the only way to get it back to home GUI is to reboot the box from recovery. That was extremely annoying for me. A while ago i used to block the updates from amazon.com by using opendns, but stopped using it so the box becomes open for updates which automatically get downloaded on the box. Because im rooted there is a easy way of blocking the updates on the box itself by using Method 1 http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-software-updates-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/. However this will stop working if you factory reset the box, if you do so you'll have to apply the blocking procedure again.
After the blocking is done just upgrade the box to the latest prerooted firmware from rbox and you're set. this is the link to the latest pre-rooted custom firmware for aftv1 https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/prerooted-stock-images-t2882337.
i hope that helps.
To add to stutunaru, Method 5 is equally important to apply through TWRP, after a fresh ROM flash and before the first full system boot.

Has anyone seen this? It started a few weeks ago.
I use the AFTV at night.. I turn on the TV which is connected via HDMI. The TV will just be a blue screen. The power light on the AFTV will be off.. I can hit a button on the remote, and the power light will come on.. but still no video.. Nothing I can do will kick the AFTV to get it to show video until I unplug power and restart it.
From there, it will operate just fine.. until it sits idle for too long, the power management kicks in, and it wont wake up again.. back to the cycle..
I poked around the settings etc.. I didnt see anything related to sleep mode.. I have screensaver turned off.
Very strange..
Ideas anyone?

If possible hook it up to another TV. I think it might be an hdmi handshake issue. If it is you can try different hdmi cables and different ports. If you dont have another tv then turn off your tv with aftv working. Wait a short time and turn on the tv. See if the issue pops up again.

I think you are on to it. I did some more testing.. Last night I got the blue screen on the TV.. Instead of powering down the AFTV, I unplugged and re-plugged the HDMI and video came in. Its strange this suddenly started happening.. I am not sure what I can do about it.

Unusual it just started happening...are you sure you didnt switch hdmi cables or the port? Could be the latest firmware update but its doubtful because others would probably be complaining about it, and I cant think of why any update at this stage would impact cec.

I agree that is very strange.. I didnt change cables or ports.. but now that I know its an HDMI issue, I will swap some cables or something and see if it makes a difference. There really isnt anything else I can do.. On the tv, switching to another hdmi and coming back doesnt help.. I have to physically unplug the hdmi and plug it back in..
This issue has to do with HDCP and started with the 51.1.6.1 software update. See here: http://www.aftvnews.com/recent-fire-tv-software-updates-causing-blank-screen-issues-related-to-hdcp/
HDCP issues may also increase when the HDMI connection is done in a chain for e.g. with an amplifier between box and TV. The cause is often here that the amp´s do not pass through the HDCP handshake to the TV.

I just read the thread on aftvnews. It definitely seems to be my issue. I swapped to a different cable and it appears to have fixed it. The thread thought maybe the issue was fixed with 51.1.6_3_user_516012020 .. but that is the version I have and the date for the install is Aug 20..
Anyway its a tricky issue.. I guess if you get things working.. dont touch anything !..
Hey,
I just got a Fire Stick. I'm not entirely sure about the FW, but it should be stock 5.x
When I plug it into my desktop monitor, everything works perfect.
On my TV, however, I only get the splash screen, before the screen turns "light black", as in "no signal", basically.
If I use the remote control combination for a factory reset, the reset screen shows up for however long the process takes, then resets, I get the splash screen, then again back to "no signal".
I tried the combo for the resolution cycle (back+rev+sel+right), which always gives me the factory reset option. When I try rev+up, the cycle starts, at least when connected to my monitor, not on my TV though.
I am starting to think there might be an issue with my TV, however, when I connect my Raspberry Pi, there is no issue there.
FYI, the TV is an LG 49LH510V, which only has one HDMI-in.
Any suggestions are appreciated, I am thinking there might be some weird resolution switching going on after/during boot which my (admittedly, cheap) TV can't handle.
//edit: Apparently, it has to do with the DCHP (?), which my TV seems to have issues with. If anyone knows how to circumvent this without using an additional HDMI-Splitter, let me know.
Basically my Miracast is worked fine up until a couple days ago when all the sudden casting to the TV just puts a picture of my desktop background at a very low resolution with the three buttons that are on the bottom of my phone at the bottom of the picture on my TV. I'll try to post a picture when I get home. What I have tried already is using an HDMI from my usb-c connection which results in the same thing . Dex mode works fine no issues there just when I try to Miracast
I've tried also casting to my laptop which had the same problem hopefully there's nothing wrong with my phone I just got it.

I can't get the picture to show but that's it
