Double tap and lift not working - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

OK, what am I doing wrong? I had this feature on the g4. I updated to 7.1.1 and the settings are on in moves. I have a notification but double tapping the screen when it is off doesn't do anything.

Do you have lockscreen activated?

Lol crap. Set at a half hour before it locks. I guess double tap only works if the screen is locked. On the lg g4 you could use it any time to turn on the phone

[Q] Double tap to lock screen inside apps.

Hey there. I was wondering if it's possible to double tap to lock screen inside apps? For instance - I'm in a gallery and when I double tap it locks the screen.
The double tap lock screen function works fine when you're on the home screen, but not in any app.
Not that I know of since with Android, the app (activity) that has the focus on the screen accepts all the taps.
You could try swiping down near where the status bar would be to make it appear and then double tap that. That's how I get it to work with Nova launcher. Well, I don't have to swipe down since the status bar is there. I just double tap the status bar to turn off the phone.
I use knock to turn on the phone.
Use it with Nova as well.

There's also a reason they don't have this feature added. What if you were trying to play a game and everytime you tapped the screen too quickly it turned off? Or you were going through some menu fast enough that it registered you tapping two different options as a double-tap. There would have to be some sort of per-app filter like the stock rom has for hiding the nav buttons in certain apps. Not saying this idea couldn't work, because if you or someone else ever gets it working I'd be glad to use it!

That's true, but I was asking the question because when my phone is flat on the table or something with gallery opened, it's uncomfortable to slide your finder to the back of the phone to lock the screen so I wanted to know if there's a chance to lock it with tapping. But when I'm playing games, it's different story - I already have my fingers on the back of the case so it's no longer uncomfortable to lock it.

That's where I'd say swipe down to show the notif bar and then double tap the notif bar. That's what I do so I don't have to pick up the phone to turn off the screen. Then, using a knock pattern, I can turn on and unlock the phone via the knock pattern. Don't have to double tap the phone to wake it up and then unlock it (either via pattern or pin). Instead, with knock, just knock the pattern and it turns on and unlocks all at once. Love it!

Yeah. Like I said previously, I'll be using this method
If you use Xposed and G3 tweakbox, there is an option to double tap the nav bar to lock the screen as well.
This will give you a place at the top and bottom of the display to lock the screen when in an app (or using a launcher replacement).

I don't see why to use that option to 'enable' it when it is already enabled and working in default.

By default it works on the status bar (top of the screen). The option in G3 tweaksbox allows it to work on the Nav bar (bottom of screen) as well which is not enabled by default.

Oh then it's a nice option to enable then.
I got confused about the nav bar, I thought it was the status bar.
But the tweaksbox requires root which I don't want to do :s.
You don't need to pull down the notification bar at all to double tap to turn the screen off.
You just double tap the very top of the screen where your notification bar would be.

[Q] A question regarding double tap

In the Motion Gestures, it says that this phone can double tap to wake and to sleep. Double tap to wake is working great, but it doesn't double tap to sleep. Has anyone else noticed if double tap to sleep works?

It works, but only in the lockscreen.
Sometimes double tap doesn't work for no reason, do you have any idea what's going on?
You can also go to Dev settings and tick the double tap status bar to sleep. Much handier than the lock screen bc you have to turn the phone OFF to get to lock screen and defeats the whole purpose of double tap to sleep...

If you just got your phone, it may have been sitting in the box awhile and may need to be updated. Go to the Play Store and search for HTC Motion Launch to see if an update is available. Also, check on your phone and/or with your carrier to find out if a software update is available for your phone.

Using Gravity Screen to wake phone when you pick it up

I was searching for a way to make Tasker wake phone when I pick it up, so I just have to at it to unlock it. In looking into this, I discovered Gravity Screen, which amongst other things, can wake your phone when you pick it up, straight to Face Unlock. It seems to work well but I'm not sure of the impact on battery. I'm not using it to lock the screen... Really only using it for the one thing.

I've been using this app on my last two phones in order to be able to double tap the home screen on my launcher (Action Launcher) to turn off the screen, WITHOUT locking the phone. For some reason though, this no longer works on the OP5T, double tapping just simply won't trigger the screen off shortcut. Really disappointed in this, are you able to get this to work on yours?
I do also use its proximity sensor feature so that it automatically turns the screen on upon removal from my pocket, and it turns the screen back off once I put the phone back into my pocket, which triggers the angle needed to turn the screen off. That feature still works as intended, and better yet, preps the screen for the face unlock. And as far as I can tell, hardly uses any extra battery.

Hmmm... I use Nova Launcher and I use the double tap to lock the phone. I've never wanted it to not lock. I wasn't aware that there is a double tap action in Gravity Screen? I'll have a look.

It's not really within Gravity Screen itself, you'd have to use the launcher to set up the double tap on home screen to a shortcut. From there, you can pick one of Gravity Screen's shortcuts that allow you to either just turn off the screen, or do a persistent off screen, where you have to use the power button to bring it back on. I believe the problem I had with using the double tap to lock screen feature built into the launchers is that it forces you to have to enter in a password afterwards...face unlock or fingerprint do not work.

Hmmm. Not true with Nova. I double tap to lock and I can use fingerprint to unlock. However, I believe that I requires root for this lock method. Do you have root?

Nope, I don't have root. I did try the same shortcuts with Nova, and it didn't work there either.
have used the app on my old OPO.. now on 5T it's just perfect.. just pick up the phone.. and prepare for landing on homescreen without any tap or button press
does not consume a lot of battery
I've used this in the past as a way to turn on the screen when it comes out of my pocket

This application wakes up your phone, and it works well on my OP5T, it's called "Always on AMOLED"you can download it from F-Droid open source apps, Yalp Store and Google Play. I like that it is low on resources, double tap wake up screen option, lock screen clock, date, battery, custom message and notifications.

Double tap to wake

I got the phone today, any information why double tap to wake is not possible. or activated ?
I have no idea, but I would also very much like to know. I miss my double tap...!
Same here, just received the phone: Quality seems quite good but I'm surprised this basic functionality (double tap to wake) is not available.
From what I read, if it's not implemented at kernel level then no apps can bring it to the phone ...
If anyone has more info, that would be great!
As an alternative this app can be tried. It wakes the device up by wave gesture.
It must be checked if Mi A2 Lite still goes to deep sleep mode and doesnt stay awake when app is active (hint by dev that some devices have problems)
Also it must be checked if Fingerprint is working without any issues like re-enter PIN after fingerprint unlock
Same problem, got the phone last saturday... it seems that the oreo version has it but our phone's didn't...
This ROM is extremely light so they removed most of the common features.
Let's just wait for a semi-official Lineage release for A2L.
Or you can wait until someone builds a kernel for this device. Many Kernels enable tap to wake functionally.

I thought the finger print sensor would make tap to wake useless lol.
I got the phone 3 days ago. Double-tap to wake works from day one.
I really wish I could turn it OFF.
Ambient Light is Off, TalkBalk is Off but phone still wakes up in my pocket all the time.
Anyone know how to turn this feature Off please?

Strangely, on my A2 Lite, double tap only wakes up the screen. Double tapping when screen is awake does nothing at all.
I emailed Xiaomi Support about this, asking how I could disable the waking up. The reply came from Xiaomi Support Malaysia:
Go to the Settings - Select Accessibility - Select advanced settings - Turn on the pocket mode option
I replied, "There is no Advanced Settings under Accessibility. There is also no setting available when I search for pocket or double or tap twice."
Their advice was to backup and perform a Factory Reset, which I think is nonsense.

G7 Pre Purchase Questions Please

Ready to upgrade my V30 to a G7. Trying to find out if it has lift to wake like my old Pixel. I miss being able to just pickup the phone and see the clock and notifications. Thanks for your help.
Yes it has, even better, lift to wake and face unlock without swipe up.
It doesn't have lift to wake up but it has Always on display wich shows you the clock and what nothifications you have.
Yes it has. Just enable face unlock... Also you can enable swipe up to unlock if you want to see the lock screen...

Not really the same. Lift to wake turns the screen on when lifting. This option unlocks your device.
This option turns my screen on. Period. I think the OP has the sollution.
