Safe To Upgrade VZW Pixel XL To 7.1.1? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I've unlocked my bootloader but I am stock with no root. I haven't done anything yet because I'm waiting for twrp and Roms to mature a bit before I dive right in. Does anybody know if it's safe to update and keep the unlocked bootloader?

I know it should be safe to do the full image flash from a computer using fastboot. I am specifically talking about the ota

Yes, it's safe to take the OTA as long as your bootloader is already unlocked.

Yes, I installed it with no problem. Boot loader is still unlocked, and the new move gestures are mostly OK.

I lost the ability to use the native Hotspot with my unlimited data plan on Verizon. It appears the update closed the workaround where you could use network refresher and bypass the provisioning check.

Awesome thanks everybody about to do the OTA now

Damn that sucks. I'll be avoiding it for now then. Really don't want to root. I like android pay. But I need tethering

You can update... The OTA didn't work on my phone so I had to sideload it through ADB, still unlocked and worked like a charm

wrong thread

I thought the Verizon pixel couldn't unlock the bootloader. Is that true?

You can before this update that was just released. You have to unlock before taking update or you won't be able to unlock. Once you unlock you can still update with no problem

There is a tool that can force unlock the bootloader (depixel8?), but the exploit that it uses has been closed with this update.

You can if your on 7.1 but not if your on 7.1.1

EDIT: I misread the posting. It is locked in 7.1.1.

Really?? The news has been all over that the 7.1.1 update patched dePixel8. He even posted on his website about it and said to not ask for further support. I assumed he didn't have a pixel so wasn't going to spend any more time on it. From my understanding the first method was very simple for them to figure out.
Please reply if you can find the post this will be big for everyone!

You can unlock the bootloader with the dePixel8 method

Ad nauseum to the can you unlock or not. The latest update from Verizon makes the Verizon model locked. Period. If you haven't unlocked already, don't update to 7.1.1. If you plan to unlock. Depixel8 DOES NOT work for verizon pixel once the 7.1.1 update has been applied. If you unlock.... Don't relock. End of story. Stop with the round and round.

I'm pretty sure you can root, change the build.prop to allow tethering, unroot, then install a custom kernel with the safetynet bypass feature and still use android pay.

So taking the OTA and flashing boot to root after will work if I'm understanding everything I've read this far? Also I have been unable to find the build specific for 7.1.1 for Verizon to download.

Purchased from Verizon, unlocked bootloader with root. Update?

Hello all,
Long time lurker, though first time poster. I have a Verizon Pixel XL that I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone on Android 7.0. I am now getting a system notification that I can update to Android 7.1. I'm unsure truly if I should proceed with it or not.
Don't want to lock my phone out as I am afraid of the repercussions.
Summary: Unlocked bootloader on Verizon Pixel XL with root trying to see if it is possible to update over system update to 7.1
Thank you in advance! ?

It would fail if you try since you're rooted. You'll need to sideload the OTA via recovery, then root again via fastboot before first the boot.

Same situation as you,
Got a question for ya, I just unlocked bootloader also yet its still gray. Is yours?
I expected it to fail as I have UL bootloader and am rooted, I tried it anyway and it worked. I was surprised. I got updated to V firmware (I'm in the UK, EE network, previously had H firmware). Bootloader remained unlocked but lost root. I rerooted after update without issues. Hope this helps.

I want to install the update but don't want to lose root is there a guide somewhere on how to side load it with adb?

I'm pretty sure that can't be done. If you update, you'll lose root but it only takes two minutes to re root.

So you took the OTA or side loaded the OTA? If you took the OTA and it succeeded while being rooted, that would be great news.

Sideload the OTA then boot to bootloader and redo root before fully rebooting to android. Worked for me.
Sideloading OTA with custom kernel
Is the process for sideloading an OTA different if you have a custom kernel? I'd imagine simply sideloading it wouldn't work.

Pretty much the same process to root it again after the update? Same root method?

So should we anticipate having to sideload every OTA update from this point forward as well? Along with having to root the phone again? Or do we expect OTA updates to work on rooted Verizon phones with the bootloader unlocked in the future?
Forgive the ignorance but the last few phones have been developer edition or have had simpler root methods.

Yup. Same method.

I think this may have been asked, but I haven't been on these forums since forever...

I spent a little time browsing around, and I didn't seem to find any straight answers anywhere. I just got my Pixel XL on Verizon, running NDE63P.
Is this build number compatible with dePixel8? I'd like to unlock this bootloader and root the phone before I lose all chance to in the future. On top of that, if it is compatible with dePixel8, where would I find a guide to download fastboot and adb? How would I know if it's working properly with my phone?
Please and thank you to anyone that helps me out here. Again, been out of the Android scene since the S4.

Awesome, I just got the bootloader unlocked. In the past with other android phones I've owned I was able to root only due to Verizon's ways. Now that I'm unlocked how would I go about getting SuperSU installed? Or whatever super user program is used for this phone?
Also, it popped up on my phone right before I unlocked it....Is it safe to install 7.1 updates? Will it relock my phone?

Updates will only affect root currently. I would update before you root but it's completely separate from whether the bootloader is locked or not.
Yea I found the root information and got it rooted last night. This morning I woke up though and realized I was having blue tooth issues which were causing me to lose connection to the Verizon network. Rebooted the phone and all is well.

Pixel XL verizon7.1.1 BL unlock or root ?

Just got my pixel XL 7.1.1 .. can I flash 7.1? Or is there 7.1.1 root or BL unlock? I want to be able to change my emoji to iOS style
Download a 3rd party keyboard and emoji add-on for it.
Unfortunately you have no way to unlock your bootloader now that you are already on 7.1.1. You cannot go back and do it either. You are stuck now

I was wanting to be able to see the iOS emoji style. Do you think a unlock method will be released for 7.1.1?

Eventually yes. There will always be some hole that can be exploited. It's just a matter of someone finding it

Not always the case. Getting the right people searching for a way to unlock it the hard part on a lot of these carrier lockdowns. Even on relatively popular phones, eventually people give up and stop looking.
As of now, it's been since the December 5, 2016 update that dePixel8 was patched and there's no unlocking method yet for 7.1.1 on VZW.

Just bought a Pixel on 7.1.1, safe to update to 8.0?

Pretty self explanatory. I have the update pending for 8.0 but I've heard mixed reviews of the Oreo updates. So please, if anyone can be honest and tell me weather to proceed, or should I wait and why. Thanks you.
If it's a Verizon model you just have a gem in your hands, look on how to unlock the bootloader before update, if it's a Google version, then all you get are improvements and new features without compromises.

What's the best way to check if it's Verizon? And I don't need to root or anything honestly. I'm asking if the bugs with 8.0 are worth updating at the current state.
I recommend unlocking bootloader first and then update
So by unlocking the bootloader, I won't run into problems taking official updates?

No. If you modify system (root, Magisk, custom ROMs/kernels, TWRP recovery, etc) then you won't be able to take official OTA updates. But you can take them just fine with an unlocked bootloader.
Also, I'm on stock 8.1 and have no issues to speak of. I say go for it.

FYI If phone is a Verizon version an on 7.1.1 you are able to unlock it. If you update beyond 7.1.1 without unlocking you will Never be able to unlock it. If it's a Google version no worries.
There's no reason to unlock the bootloader if you're not rooting. That's just introducing a security issue. The Oreo update is safe and stable to install. You're good to go on hitting that update button.

I disagree. On rare occasion, the OTA update can cause issues, and with a locked bootloader you are unable to install an image. Even if I don't root my devices, I still unlock the bootloader just so I can have the option of installing a factory image just in case something goes wrong.

He's right though. Unlocking will lead to security issues and may take away the ability to use important apps. If he prioritizes functionality, then it's best to keep it locked but if he wants to tinker, it'll come with compromises.
Since he just bought it, I don't see why he couldn't just warranty it if an update goes wrong, which is extremely rare. From what I've seen from people with bricked devices, the majority of them were unlocked and tried to update using non-conventional ways.
Bootloaders are locked from factory for a reason, not for inconvenience.

Verizon pixel 2 xl bootloader

There probably a thread on his subject already but I can't seem to find it, but anyway is their a way to unlocked the bootloader on the Verizon edition of the pixel 2 xl if so can someone point in the direction so I can learn how to do it
Bootloader is locked and it cannot be done. Any exploit found was quickly patched out. Last one that worked was over a year ago. Sorry.

Unlocking the bootloader is the first step in rooting a phone, so no. And you can't install Magisk or Xposed either due to them needing a custom recovery, which requires a..... you guessed it, unlocked bootloader.

Late follow up, you can install 'Virtual Xposed' now, it gives some limited functionality for Xposed on the Pixel but it's not a true root nor can it do everything that Xposed can.
If there is any justice in the world... Verizon will go out of business in a fire sale.
