Cant get ROM to boot. - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried upgrading to 7.1, and have tried 3 different ROM's. I even tried going back to 6. Every single ROM told me error code 7 when I tried to flash it. I went about fixing that. So then I was able to flash the ROM and GApps. But then when it goes to boot into the OS all it does is hang on the white Asus screen, reboot, and go back to the white Asus screen. It does that 3 times then goes into recovery. I even tried fixing it with ZE551ML_Modder V3.3. I am running TWRP-3.0.2-0-Z00A.img. This is a Z00A as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Did you upgraded the bootloader? I would just retrace steps, if not factory reset and try again.

The bootloader is the recovery right? (At least thats what I always thought). If so then I am running the newest TWRP for it.

http://theflamingskull.com/zenfone2.html
Upgrade your bootloader following the instructions on the .zip package.
This will upgrade your bootloader and flash a compatible TWRP recovery.

I did all that. Now I am stuck with CM Recovery. I tried using the tool to get TWRP back but its not working. I have to figure out how to push TWRP using ADB.

In modder, return to stock option , flash stock recovery and boot img.
Unlock bootloader in modder, just incase.
Flash twrp, root in modder ..reboot to twrp...install 7.1 and pico gapps

I finally had to go to Ubuntu, run ADB as SU and ADB Sideload an older version of Cyanogenmod. Not a single factory image would work. And not a single one of those Android 7 ROM's would work. They are all broken. I would like to see real proof of one working. That little escapade cost me a lot of time. So until someone comes out with a real CM14 version for the Z00A do not attempt to boot one.

You may have really misunderstood the processes and yes they are allover the place.
i am running CM14.1 lots of people are !
What you probobaly have is LP based CM 13 on WW-4.20 blah blah.165
Then there was a CM13 with MM blobs based on WW-4.21 blah blah .135 MM
I think where you have gone wrong is not unlocking bootloader in 5 LP and upgrading bootloader and unlocking.
if you are on .165 - you could flash stock recovery for .165 -- upgrade to .184 -- unlock bootloader and upgrade to MM then unlock bootloader in MM with modder
Then use the modder to install 7.1 14.1 CM
But judging by the probs you have haD already - just leave it alone :good:

Post a screen shot of build number info you are presently on :good:

Return to Stock from SuperZen

Hi All,
Apologies if I am asking the same question others have in the past I am just wanting to make certain I am following the correct steps.
My Zenfone has an unlocked bootloader, SSJs TWRP and is rooted with the SuperZen R15 firmware.
I am wanting to return to stock recovery and stock unrooted system. Can I just ADB sideload the latest ASUS firmware via TWRPs advanced option or are there other steps I need to take first? Do I need to unroot this firmware first or will the sideload sort all of that out for me?
Hope my question makes sense!
Thanks everyone!
Hi again everyone.
I just tried and the process was successful. For anyone interested I followed the following steps.
1. Unroot via SuperSU
2. Fastboot flash recovery, boot and droidboot images
3. ADB sideload full rom from Asus website using stock recovery
All of these steps have instructions or tutorials on this site and others.
Hope this helps anyone looking for this info.
Where can I get the recovery, boot, and droidboot images?

Same steps for cm12? I just want to get back to stock i'm sick of playing around with a alpha firmware at the moment. I've already wasted a good portion of my day off. Will this get rid of white boot screen
Yeah maybe, you can always try.
I don't think it will remove the white boot screen, you would have to flash the black one before removing TWRP.

[SOLVED] Cannot boot into Cyanogenmod, only TWRP. No ROM's working

Edit: Problem has been solved based on instructions provided here.
Long story short I had problems with the newest Cyanogenmod 14 nightly today and had to Factory Reset my phone. Since then I have spent hours installing different ROM's and have been unable to get any to work. They all install just fine, no errors. However I cannot boot into the OS at all. Every time I try to I am automatically booted into TWRP. I don't understand why this is happening after I have repeatedly wiped my entire phone. There is literally nothing on it, I install from scratch, restart... and am booted right back into recovery mode :crying:
Any help is greatly appreciated. I have a reddit thread going on right now as well regarding my problems earlier today but haven't gotten any help.
TWRP Version 3.0.2
Various ROM's I have tried:
cm-13.0-20160820-SNAPSHOT-ZNH5YAO0J9-Z00T.zip
cm-14.1-20161202-NIGHTLY-Z00T.zip
cm-14.1-20161201-NIGHTLY-Z00T.zip
hmm.. try to reboot into bootloader either from recovery or with help of volume plus power button. then flash ifwi, boot, droidboot, recovery and dnx, then install firmware again. if no luck with that. then you have to flash raw firmware using commands

Thank you for the reply!
Rebooting into either bootloader or with the button commands always brings me into TWRP. Nothing else appears to be possible.
Is there another way I can flash what I need? I am not familiar with flashing firmware and am not sure what ifwi droidboot etc. mean, is there a guide you could point me to for this?
Thanks!

Holy **** it worked!!! Thanks so much man!!!
If you were on cm14 then you are on an mm based bootloader. You can only install roms based on that. All of the lp bootloader based roms will do exactly what you described. The other alternative is to downgrade the bootloader to lp.

There is or at least was a bug in CM 14.1 within settings , if did a factory reset within settings ...whether it still there today with latest build ? I've not tested
What it does or did, is render your twrp ineffective , you cannot flash or restore.
Above solution fixed or fixes it fast and you can then restore or install cm14.1

[Help me!] My Zenfone 2 always brick when I try to install a ROM

Hey! I have a Zenfone 2 ZE551ML (Z00A) which always brick when I try installing a new rom. The first time I tried installing RR and so, I downgraded to Lollipop so that could use Asus official tool to unlock my bootloader, then I flashed a TWRP recovery (I'll post the file here) through fastboot and booted to recovery mode. I used the TWRP recovery to then install ASUS rom for Android 6.0 (because the RR thread says I must have Android 6 previously installed) then I restarted and.... got bricked. To unbrick, I used this tutorial from here (one that teached me how to use xFSTK and fastboot to bring my phone back to life) and then unlocked the bootloader and flashed the TWRP recovery, did the update to 6.0 then when I tried to flash RR TWRP says I can't install it (I got error 7) the I reboot and got bricked again. Can someone here please help me?

There's a lot going on here. You need to spend some time reading through the threads. Basically, you can't flash the official asus rom with twrp. It requires stock recovery. And you need to be sure to have the correct bootloader for the custom rom you are installing. Basically, Lollipop roms based on stock rom and Cm13 based roms need Lollipop bootloader. Marshmallow roms based on stock mm rom and LinOS 14.1 based roms need the Marshmallow bootloader. That's where your error 7 was coming from.
Again, read the first post of the Rom you want to install carefully. It should tell you what you need.

The RR rom tells me I need Android 6 but the Official way to unlock the bootloader doesn't work with Android 6. How am I supposed to unlock it? If it helps, here is the link to rom I'm trying to install: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/development/rom-resurrection-remix-m-5-8-0-t3507247.

Like I said, you need to read through the threads. Go to the resources and the index threads in the general section. And look at the first posts there. Also find the modder tool thread. It's a very useful multipurpose tool for all kinds of things.

OP3 EBAY need help returning it to stock

Hey guys, I recently purchased a OP3 on ebay. I noticed they had messed around with custom roms and the bootloader. Wanted to return it to stock but I cant seem to do that. Ive followed most guides on here but everything leaves me either at a bootloop or without a recovery. I have only been able to succesfully flash TWRP recovery and stock recovery once. However after flashing stock recovery and sideloading stock OS, I wasnt able to boot back into stock recovery nor into the OS. Only way I can get a recovery is if I flash TWRP. Also, any OS crashes. I have tried Lineage, SUltans, a ton of different version of the stock OS. Not sure what to do at this point. I also noticed that the phone was running Android 6 when I first got it. I heard stock recovery for MM is different from other recoveries. Thanks in advance guys

Thanks for the advice. I'm able to follow along up until I update the driver to make it show Qualcomm 9008. It stays as Qualcomm HS USB 9008 under COMS and PORTS. Ive followed all of the 9008 troubleshooting tips as well. The last tip I get stuck on installing the driver to the three stores. I can only select one store while installing the certificate.

Ive tried that but whenever i flash any of the stock recoveries my phone just will not boot into them. Always restarts. I hear this could be something to do with MM? The phone had MM when I first recieved it.
Just try to finish unbrick guide. The method 2 !

I have had that problem with restoring my device, my problem was that i used an old adb version, make shure you use the latest adb version from google:
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html

Messed up my phone and now I'm really confused

So I recently got my honor 7x and I got the bootloader unlock code today. I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and downloaded a custom ROM like I would on my other devices. I'm on EMUI5 and I assumed flashing an android 8.1 ROM would be possible so I wiped my internal storage. After that I tried flashing the rom in TWRP, which gave me some error about the zip not being in the right format. Then I flashed the rom in ADB but the device wouldn't boot up. I'm sitting here with a formatted phone with TWRP on it and a huge headache.
Could someone please help me and tell me how to revert back to stock or how to get a rom back on my device? I have the BND-L21 variant and I was on EMUI5. I'd really appreciate it because I'm kind of freaking out rn.

If your still on 5.1 you can't update like that you will have to perform the manual update found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-7x/development/manual-update-to-oreo-beta-emui-8-bnd-t3764509 I think those files can work for your device but try to get the official Oreo update files and proceed
