Nougat "arrived" for HTC 10 yesterday - bootloader and root Qs - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Got the HTC 10 a few days ago. Didn't do much with it except unlocking bootloader and rooting, while on marshmallow. Saw the nougat being available now, as a software update.
Questions:
- would the bootloader unlock stick upon nougat update?
- would the rooting method used with marshmallow still work? I assume once updating to nougat I will loose root, but I don't know if the supersu without encryption still works, or if nougat adds something that would prevent using the latest beta supersu

The official HTC update to Nougat for the US unlocked/developer is not available yet. If you're talking about the Viper10 ROM, yes there are some issues with SuperSu. The ROM is rooted with PHH instead. Do as you wish, but my approach is to wait until HTC releases the official ROM, flash that which will put you back to stock with the latest firmware, THEN flash TWRP, and so on. This way you give Chainfire and others time to get up to speed with new versions of SuperSu, and so on. The bootloader will remain unlocked. S-Off will remain as-is etc. Nevertheless, if you want to dive right in you may want to check this out:

Phones are no doubt being bricked as we speak, lol. I am in no hurry to update at all. Fully satisfied with Viper10 V3.5.0. Just sayin'.

People are showing screenshots of the official nougat update for the unlocked htc 10

The Unlocked nougat update is absolutely available for download from HTC as an OTA.

??? The OFFICIAL Nougat was available at least since yesterday, 11/24/2016. My unlocked US phone detected it in the regular software update, and I downloaded it.

Not for me, I'm on Viper10 which means I don't get OTAs. I keep checking HTC's US website. They haven't posted it yet. Should be there soon. Thx for the heads up.

quick question?

Hi, my i have a rooted one m9 t-mobile and i want to check for OTA updates and i couldn't. Does unrooting my device give me the ability to check and download OTA updates? Thanks
No it doesn't since google introduced block-based OTAs with Android 5. Flash a RUU or restore an "untouched" TWRP backup that corresponds to the currently installed firmware on your phone.

What do you mean with "latest version"? The exact firmware version as stated in the line with "OS" at the beginning which can be found in download mode would be more informative. Depending on the currently installed firmware there might not be an further updates.

I just want to know how do i know if there are any new updates available and when to restore my system backup and remove root to update
Can i check for OTA's even if i'm rooted
You wanted to know whether there are no updates or whether you can't find one because you're rooted. The answer is without knowing your currently installed firmware it's not possible to answer that question. That's why I wanted to know what's the "latest update" you installed.
Normally you should be able to see new updates but not to install them if your M9 is rooted. The reason are the block-based OTAs. However users have already been reporting that they bought second hand phones which weren't able to see new updates because the previous owner borked the phone by playing around with the CID and the MID.

Complete Newbie to HTC 10, Wondering about RUU, 7.0, and Root

Hi, I'm a long time Android enthusiast, owning, rooting and modding a Nexus 4, LG Optimus V, and Honor 5X. However, the HTC 10 is really confusing to me because of its new Nougat update.
I currently have a US Unlocked HTC 10 with a freshly unlocked bootloader, S-On. I was wondering if I should root it with TWRP Recovery, and install an RUU to keep root, or is that not how it works? I'm jut very confused as to how to keep root going into the Nougat update. Thanks
Thats not how it works.
When you use an RUU, it will not keep root. It will wipe your device full factory reset.
I dont really recommend the 7.0 update just yet as there is no TWRP for it.
Since you are S-ON, you wont be able to downgrade back to 6.0.
You CAN root 7.0 using Magisk if you need to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/development/root-magisk-autoroot-magisk-phhs-t3507505
If Still you want to upgrade, then you should S-OFF FIRST.. so you can downgrade if you want. You can NOT S-OFF from 7.0 yet, and you can not downgrade without S-OFF, so it's a one way ticket if you don't S-OFF first. (for now.)
You cant really Keep root (AKAIK), you'll have to re-root after each update. Here is what I usually do (excluding the 7.0 update for now because there is no TWRP Yet)
1) Flash TWRP.
2) Backup System Image / Boot (Clean - before root).
3) Flash the latest SuperSU to root.
4) When there is a new OTA update, boot to TWRP, restore the Last Clean System Image / Boot images.
5) Flash Latest Stock Recovery.img. (You'll need to find it, or extract it from an OTA Zip)
6) Boot to Rom, Install OTA.
7) Repeat Steps 1-3

Yep, same here. The best option is to wait for Captain Throwback to get TWRP spruced up for Nougat. Flash Nougat then flash TWRP.

OTA flashing signed packages?

I've unlocked my bootloader a while back and had my thrills with root and xposed but I felt like the modules and apps I was using weren't helping with battery life. I've decided to unroot by fastboot flashing the system images (including boot) and decided to lock the bootloader as well. I wasn't surprised that the bootloader was checking for signed kernel and ROM that I flashed, since I've downloaded the system images from someone who isn't from Motorola who uploaded their copy of the files.
Point of this post is this... Since the OTA downloads supposedly signed packages (when nougat arrives for the US variant), will I be able to lock the bootloader after I flash the supposed upcoming nougat update via OTA?

Just leave it unlocked, it makes no difference even if you relock it, you'll still be flag as having an unlocked bootloader.
You can still flash or accept the nougat ota with an unlocked bootloader.
If you're trying to get android pay to work well that maybe not be possible.

Alright thanks, that's what I was regretting to find out. Hopefully magisk and systemless root can eventually work on our device so I don't have to do TWRP backups of stock.

New 10 Owner - what to do first?

Just got a 10 Factory Unlocked. I do need to root for Xprivacy and AdAway, etc. and of course, to make a nandroid. I suppose I could use ADB for such a thing, but TWRP surely does make life easier.
Since this is the first phone I've ever had that was already unlocked, I'm not quite sure where to start with rooting. I'm a little concerned because I'm seeing posts discussing how the radio might go wonky. Not ready to flash a custom ROM yet, I just want to dip my toe in the water for now.
I'd be grateful if someone could point the way.
BTW, the faceplate on my 10 is white, I was expecting black based on all the photos I've seen. Is this because I got the Factory Unlocked edition?
Thanks in advance!
is it on nougat or still marshmallow? i think nougat right? Xposed won't work on nougat anyway and you don't need to worry about the radio. if it's unlocked already and want to just root and you need to pass safetynet, get magisk v12. first you need to flash twrp and then flash the magisk zip to get root and be able to pass safetynet, be sure to not flash anything which modifies directly the system, otherwise no stock OTA and some apps won't work even if you use magisk hide

Haven't even turned the phone on yet - letting her charge to 100% before I do anything. I'm confused - why would I need to unlock the bootloader if I already have an unlocked phone? Or by 'Factory Unlocked' do they mean SIM unlocked, versus bootloader unlocked?

Not familiar with 'safetynet', and yes - I do need Xposed therefore it will modify the /system partition so far as I understand.
In any event, it sounds like the starting point is TWRP for anything to do with root, correct?

yes you need twrp, without it no root... the thing is there is no Xposed for nougat and I think your phone came with android 7/ nougat right? if yes, forget Xposed. but you can use apps like adaway with magisk too.
So that'S why you should search for the Magisk thread and read everything about it, before you proceed

No, the HTC 10 shipped with MM. I guess I'll have to fire her up and see where I'm at.
So, assuming that I'm on MM, then it's just TWRP, flash SuperSU from recovery, install Xposed and I'm off and running - nothing extra, correct?
How would I make a Nandroid of the current factory ROM (all partitions - not file based) using ADB just in case?

yea if MM then it's that easy.
full stock nandroid can be done in twrp, there you can backup system, data, boot and recovery
also the system image, but don't know if you need that, but you can try to backup it too, be sure to have enough space

flash magisk v12 then you have root and also can use android pay and other apps which needs passed safetynet
if you don't mind safetynet, you can also use systemless supersu
To the OP, surely factory unlocked indicates unlocked to all networks rather than bootloader unlocked ? Check this first to save some hassle. If the bootloader isn't unlocked yet, you could consider sunshine s off , it will cost you but on mm firmware you can s off and stay locked which can be an advantage. Worth checking bootloader status first though

What exactly do you need xposed for? It won't work once you updated to Nougat. And Nougat is much better tan Marshmallow at least as far as I'm concerned. All I need I've been able to find on custom ROMs and or by additional root Apps.

So far:

Flashfire doesn't fully support Oreo yet so that's a no go, same with TWRP. ADB sideload might work.
I just flashed it this morning and had no problems.
I flashed a couple of hours ago official OTA package via ADB. No problems till now.
I took the plunge and flashed the 8.0 stock factory image the done a factory reset after to make sure and it been great ever since turned off animation and it's nippy just wish battery was about better but I'll give it a few days see if that goes

It is true that the OTA is out there. I confirm it because I signed-up to beta program to get the update and two days later I opted out to see if this is the latest official OTA ROM and I didn't get the update. So if you don't want to wait you can do the same it's safe. You can check the latest OTA here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota
The version is the same I have. 8.0.0 OPR6.170623.013.
I can confirm that jd1639's method works for people rooted with TWRP.
- download OTA (https://developers.google.com/android/ota)
- run Flashfire 60.0 (free version is OK)
- when asked "A system update has been detected", cancel
- Flash ZIP or OTA
- uncheck "restore boot and recovery images"
- press "EverRoot" and select "Inject SuperSU" and "Preserve recovery"
- Flash
- wait patiently
I tried flashing the modem FW using "Flash firmware package" on the OTA zip file. It rebooted and the screen went black for many minutes. I had to hard reset.
Can anyone confirm the 8.0 baseband? I have M8994F-2.6.39.3.03. I know that's the baseband for the 8.0 developer preview, but I wanted to make sure it was the final.

No. There is no such problem. You can do it with any of the two ways if you didnt get the OTA until now. 1) Sign-up for the beta program install the update and then opt-out of it. 2) Flash the OTA files from Google to your phone. Or 3) But these are rumors and I can't be sure: An update will come at 11 of September with new Version of Oreo 8.0.1 with better support for Carriers (it is 8.0.0).

6p here, downloaded ota (NOT factory), ran Tibu, ran Flashfire 7.0 pro as described and after three reboots and a while of booted finishing, was cleanly updated to 8.0.0. took < 20 min. [emoji2]
