I use Car Home Ultra but despite setting it to always default as the car mode home, whenever I press home button after opening it it brings up list of apps to open including Android Auto that isn't installed. If I select CHU as always it will then work fine until I next close & open then I get same again
Any advice or anyone else seeing this?

I do not have this issue.
I told it to always use Car Home and it does.
I really hate the car mode in 7.1 btw.
Why in the world did they remove the recents button. ugh.
And I dislike that I cannot hide the "car mode" from the pulldown.
Cannot wait till Xposed is up and running so I can mod these things to work better.

This is the first root-free method I've seen. The only downside is that it requires Tasker or a similar app, but I'd be willing to bet most people here have it installed anyway. I've been trying to get Google's car home working ever since I got my GNex (VZW version), but the only solution thus far has required root. I just stumbled upon a solution:
Install this apk: http://www.mediafire.com/?31b3q1f5xibbg0j. The installation won't fail like other Car Home apks, but the app's icon will NOT appear in your app drawer. That's why you need Tasker.
Launch Car Mode with Tasker (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm). The proper action category is Display > Car Mode. I personally have it set to launch when my phone connects to my car via bluetooth, but you can launch it any way that Tasker allows, including making a home screen toggle widget.
Thanks dude! This is exactly what I needed. I had the APK but I was missing Display > Car Mode in Tasker. Just launching the app would open it but it wouldn't be in proper Car Mode. Now I can enjoy this app again.
I feel stupid, but for the life of me, i can't find car mode. I'm trimming Nova Launcher. Would that affect it?
If you mean the car mode that is inbuilt on other note 4. Then it doesn't exist on AT&T note 4. AT&T has disabled it.

Download a car mode app like Car Home Ultra then it will ask you if you want it to be default app meaning default for car mode. Click accept. In car home ultra settings look for a setting in start up options i think that says well make the home button your main button and i always have my setting for keep display on checked and apply settings for all apps. But if you click clear or uninstall car mode a bug of some sort gets rid of car mode entirely until a master reset

Actually, I do have Car Home Ultra, and it is a great app. But I find that it does not work on my NOte 4 with the Home button. I did download their patch app for that, but it appears that it wants to make it Home all the time. Although when it popped up the usual selection of things for selecthing the Home app, I didn't select it, because I was afraid it would override Nova when Car Home ULtra is not running. Of course, I should give it a try. I can always delete defaults on it.
Does anyone know of a way around the fact the Car Mode now prompts you to select either Android Auto or S Voice each time it starts now, after the recent B0F1 update?
If I choose Android Auto, my Home button becomes useless. It will flash up a screen telling me to start auto in my car and touch the display (I don't have Android Auto in my car). If I install the Android Auto app, it essentially does the same thing.
If I choose S Voice, well, then I'm stuck with that crappy app each time I start Car Mode
While Car Mode was always rather limited on the Note 4 (lack of support for home button launching your car app of choice), it was at least useful for keeping the screen on. I use A2DP Volume to start Car Mode when I connect to my in-car BT. Before the update, Car Mode simply put the steering wheel icon in notification, and kept my screen on all the time (if charging). This was perfect.
Now, I have to choose one of 2 useless apps, which breaks my Home button.
In lieu of a fix, does anyone know of a simple, reliable way to keep the screen on? Most of the techniques I've tried in the past were unreliable.
Apparently, the fix is as easy as installing a "car home" app that registers as such...
I had Auto Mate installed, which didn't seem to register as a selection. I installed Car Home Ultra, and when I'm in Car Mode, I get the popup to select either Android Auto, Car Home Ultra, or S Voice.
Now my home button always brings up Car Home Ultra. So, they didn't make it worse, they fixed the broken home button behavior, *if* you have a proper home app installed.
Enable developer mode, there is an option in it to keep screen on while charging. Thats what I did.
Go to : Settings > About Phone
then tap "Build Number" until it flashes a toast message telling you Developermode has been enabled.
Then under Settings you will now see Developer Options, go into that menu and check the box for "Stay Awake"
SOLVED.

Just installed the latest system update [ 12/11/16 ] and noticed 2 things:
1) When in 'do not distrub' mode, the camera still has a shutter sound. Can't figure out how to turn it off since it didn't have a sound before
2) Can't seem to find multi-window.
3) Device doesn't seem to recognize 5g wireless routers anymore...
Wondering if I derped or if anyone else was experiencing the same thing.
Thanks in advance.
1) I tried alarms only and no shutter sound.
2) First ensure both apps are in your recents list. Then Pick the first app you want via shortcut or recents. Then long press recents and choose the app you want for the bottom half. The recents square should also change to two rectangles. To remove multi window long press recents again.
3) I'm typing this message from my 5ghz router at home on the latest update.

Thanks for the feedback. I think it might be tied to using a Japanese sim recently for the shutter sound.
Thanks for the multi window tip. Was used to the setting in the settings area.
Will troubleshoot a bit more with 5ghz. Thanks for the feedback.
So I was playing around trying out some stuff to see if an app would work in Android auto, and I came across an interesting discovery. I was able to get the Pixel phone style home button and home button animation on my Pixel C. All I did was side load Android auto and then open and close the app and then the new button style and animation showed up. I tested on a Nexus 6p with no success so my guess is this is built into the code of the Pixel C, now I'm wondering, can someone who knows more about coding than me build an app that starts this on bootup?
ok this might be a extremely late response but i might have a cool work around on getting this to work on boot,
You can install a application called macrodroid in the playstore
what you do is make a new macro and select the trigger device boot" or something simmilar
Then as action select the launch app and select the android auto apk, then select wait and put it on something like 1.5 seconds and then select close
save the macro
reboot
wait a couple seconds after unlocking the device and it should load and close
its kinda stupid you have to wait but you'll get something cool back for it
